No One Checks in Unless Their Name is Smith

Open, G05 Start

Holding hundreds of people at its maximum capacity, this hotel features a beach front pool, and nearly every room has a view. However the most common complaint that the management used to get was the paper thin walls, and how easily the building carried noise.

Lyn strode further into the building, turning down a hallway and coming to a stop when she heard voices coming from nearby.

Dammit. Of course I wouldn't be the only one here.

She wondered for a moment what she should do. She was too damn tired to go out and look for another place to sleep. Maybe she should just make her presence known. Maybe they aren't ready to play yet, and would be willing to just let her crash here for a while. Might as well give it a shot. Just do it in a way that doesn't expose herself to danger. Worst case scenario, she can just hoof it like before.

She turned the corner, walking slowly towards the room that was the source of the noise, when suddenly a boy with a shotgun turned the corner at the other end. Taken by surprise, Lyn ducked behind a large potted plant (fortunately plastic, otherwise it would've likely dried up and disintegrated by now) to watch for now. To watch the boy open up the door, point the shotgun through it, and...

BLAM

Lyn couldn't help but stare a moment in shock. She'd been kidnapped and dumped somewhere to kill people, with the assurance that they'd be trying to do the same. She'd heard announcements detailing the fledgling body count. But there was still a sort of disconnect. Like the reality of her situation hadn't fully hit her just yet. But Lyn just watched someone point a shotgun into a room of people and open fire. Shit didn't get more real than that, and the danger certainly didn't feel more real than now, either.

Fuck

FUCK

Lyn's mind was racing with possibilities. Should she run? Should she keep hiding? Should she take him out while he's distracted? Not even just for the perks of getting a better weapon, or scoring a kill so she'd have a better chance of getting out of here; just so there wouldn't be a shotgun-wielding killer occupying the same general area as her. But all the options were rooted in one simple fact.

I don't want to die.

I don't want to die.

IdontwannadieIdontwannadieIdontwannadieIdontwannadie

She was panicked, and she was worn out, and she was most certainly not thinking straight, but Lyn suddenly turned and bolted.

Only to step on a shoelace that had recently come undone.

Lyn had seemed to unfortunately made a habit of falling spectacularly. She lunged out with the pickaxe to brace herself and stop her descent, but as she wedged one end against the ground, the handle slipped out of her grasp and struck right against her ribcage, knocking the wind out of her before sliding off to the side and allowing her to complete her fall as she laid out on the floor in a messy heap. She gasped as the side of her chest throbbed painfully from the impact, only for her to freeze up when she realized that she was now dead. She was right out in the open, on the ground, with no cover to hide behind and still more hallway to traverse if she wanted to make a getaway. There was no way out.

She was scared. She was scared out of her mind.

And she was furious.

What the fuck...

WHAT THE FUCK

Is this what she pulled herself back up onto that staircase for? Just to get herself killed in some other stupid way? Just because she didn't stop to retie her goddamn shoes!?

This is bullshit! This is complete bullshit!

Lyn awkwardly pulled the pickaxe out from under her and rolled over onto her side, trying to hold out her pack in front of her, as if the piece of cloth and all the assorted items within could stop a shotgun shell. She didn't give a shit, though. Her eyes were wild, and she most certainly wasn't thinking straight.

"S...s-stay the hell away..."

Carol stared at the panicked boy with wide eyes. She dimly heard Amber talk to Marty, saying that he should explain himself.

Marty stammered, as if he had trouble saying it.

She watched him hurriedly try to explain what happened with him and Maria, and that he wasn't trying to hurt anyone. He was scared. He was just as scared as they were, and it just... happened. Maria was scared too.

Marty stumbled all over his words, saying he meant no harm.

The gun was going on the ground.

Carol opened her mouth to say something, anything. Maybe she could comfort him. Maybe she could say something to calm him down. Maybe she could hug him, or at least do something. She didn't know what-

BLAM.

Carol jumped at the sound.

Just like that, Marty fell to the ground, the blood swiftly pouring out of his shirt. He whimpered a few words to her, but she didn't know what he was saying. He was trying to say something to her, struggling.

He suddenly was very still, and Carol ran to him, crouching nearby.

"Marty?"

No, he couldn't. Someone couldn't have....

He was gone.

The thing was?

Carol...

Carol believed him.

There was no reason not to.

And there he was, just there on the floor, unmoving. Carol felt tears pushing back at her eyes, and she looked up, seeing Karl holding the gun and standing some ways away.

"K... K-karl..." she whimpered.

He did it. He shot him, didn't he? He shot Marty.

Marty began to speak. He stammered a bit, but Amber listened closely. He began to tell how Maria died, how she accidentally shot Craig, and how he fired back out of fear. Amber felt like she had to believe him. He looked too shaken up to be a murderer, and he sounded repentant. He was even going to put the gun down.

"It's okay Marty. We can-"

BLAM

Amber felt a hot wave hit her sweatshirt. Marty had a hole in his chest, and he fell to the floor. She realized what the hot wave was. Blood. Marty's blood.

Amber was quiet. She heard Marty begin to speak.

Carol... I.... I've always li.... Liked.......

He didn't finish. He wasn't moving. Amber felt tears begin to well up in her eyes. Her jaw was shaking. She dropped the chair leg to the floor and let out a scream. She moved her fingers through her hair and began panting.

He's dead. He's dead. He's dead. What the hell happened?

Amber looked up, and realized that Karl was standing behind Marty, his shotgun smoking. Carol was whimpering. Amber's eyes kept darting between the two.

"Karl, what the hell was that for?!?" she finally blurted. "He wasn't going to hurt us! Why did you shoot him?!?"

Amber then heard a crashing sound outside the kitchen. She let out a quick shout. She heard a voice down the hall telling them to stay away.

"Okay, everyone just calm the fuck down!" she shouted.

Amber picked up the chair leg and chucked it across the kitchen. The chair leg

"This can't be happening!" she said, sitting down and crying into her hands. "We were supposed to be safe here."

Karl's hands were sweating as he gripped the shotgun, the contents of the barrel having emptied themselves into Marty's body. It didn't take long for him to stop moving. Only then did he lower the gun.

He killed him. He killed Marty. He shut his eyes tightly. No. It's alright. Marty was a killer. He was going to kill them. That was all it was.

"Karl, what the hell was that for?!? He wasn't going to hurt us! Why did you shoot him?!?"

Karl couldn't say anything. Not because he was having doubts, but because they wouldn't believe it. If they weren't willing to think that Marty's case was anything but an accident, he couldn't help them.

He vaguely recognized the girl on the floor in the hallway. Lyn Burbank. He didn't know how she got in here. But her name wasn't on the announcements. She wasn't a threat. Not yet.

"Okay, everyone just calm the fuck down!"

Karl couldn't calm down. He'd just shot someone. The gun felt heavy in his hands. To him, it represented the power that he had. The power to keep everything in order. But he couldn't stay here, not anymore. An uneasy alliance wouldn't last under these conditions. It would be better, for everyone involved, if he distanced himself.

There were other names on the announcements. Names of more killers. They had all killed. Taken someone's life. Karl knew what he needed to do.

He stepped backwards, away from Carol and Amber. Away from Lyn.

"This can't be happening! We were supposed to be safe here."

A small flash of remorse passed through his mind.

"We're not safe. We were never safe."

A few more steps backwards, and then he was out the nearest exit he could locate.

I guess I'm a monster now.

He's...

He's...

He's not going to kill her.

He's backing away. He's turning the corner. He's gone.

Lyn damn near passed out in relief, lowering the pickaxe a little bit. Screw this. She wanted a comfortable place to spend the night, but this shit just wasn't worth it. She was still shaken up by the fact that somebody had just died in the next room, and for a moment morbid curiosity caused her to consider taking a look and seeing the result of what had happened. She'd never seen a dead body before...

NO. HELL NO. Lyn started to get up, turning around and starting to walk back down the hallway. This whole situation was doing strange things to her head. More than her general situation, anyway.

((Skipping Kami in order to get the death done))

We're not safe. We were never safe.

Amber quickly looked up. Karl was stepping back, and was soon bolting away from the kitchen.

"Karl, wait!" Amber shouted.

Crap, it's getting much worse.

Amber quickly scanned the room. She then noticed the gun on the floor. Marty must have dropped it when he was shot.

"Carol, I'm bringing him back," she said, picking up the gun. "Just stay safe."

Amber hurried out of the kitchen. It was dangerous to go off alone, but she knew that Karl would be in danger outside on his own. If she hurried, she might be able to catch him before he left the hotel. She barely noticed the girl coming down the hall.

There was someone calling out behind her, and then footsteps. The footsteps were getting closer.

Lyn was tired, and her nerves were wearing thin, and she definitely wasn't thinking straight. So when she looked around to see a girl running towards her carrying a gun, only one thought went through her mind.

Not again.

Lyn spun around, swinging the pickaxe wildly as she did, not truly understanding what she was doing until it was too late.

Amber hurried down the hall. She needed to get Karl back. They could work this out, maybe bury Marty, then try to ensure that nothing like that happened again. It would be alright.

That's when Amber realized the other girl was turning quickly towards her. She knew there was someone outside the kitchens, but from what she said, it sounded like she was some scared girl who wandered in. Amber just figured that Carol could help calm the girl down and they could take her in. The four of them could then wait for rescue to come.

Amber saw the blade coming towards her. She quickly stopped running.

"Wait!" was all she could shout.

The steel of the pickaxe made contact with Amber's chest. She froze as the blade entered her lower abdomen. She let go of Marty's gun, and it fell to the ground.

After that, all Amber could do was scream. It was too much. The wound burned, and Amber felt the blood pour out of her chest and down her pants. She gritted her teeth as she pulled the blade out of her chest. She stumbled back and fell to her knees. She was panting and crying. It was getting harder to breath.

"Carol! Carol! Help! It hurts!" she cried out.

She clutched the wound and looked up at the girl who stabbed her. Amber recognized her. Lyn Burbank. How could she ever imagine that someone like Lyn Burbank would kill her?

"Lyn, why?"

Amber then fell forward. She couldn't keep her eyes open. She realized she only had a few moments left.

I was a fool. We were never safe. We were never going to be rescued. Carol, please don't die here. Get out of here.

Amber finally stopped moving. With one last breath, Colehurst's Ms. A found the scoop on what happens when someone died. Unfortunately, no one would read about it. That's one expose' that she would take with her.

"Karl!"

Carol called out. Karl was running away. He was scared. He probably thought they were going to hurt him for... doing... that, to Marty. He was scared, guilty, and...

Alone.

Amber picked up Marty's gun, and said she was going after him.

"Amber, wait-"

But she was running out the door, and Carol froze for a second.

She had to go after her. There was no other choice. She just couldn't sit here, she just couldn't!

Carol stood up, and with chair leg in hand she ran out, only to see....

Lyn?

Lyn was a shy girl, always quiet. Carol always felt so sorry for her. People were always mean to her for no good reason. And yet... here she was, swinging a pickaxe at-

Oh no.

Amber cried out, screaming for Carol to help. Carol could only freeze in the hallway several feet away, watching the blade slide inside her friend. She fell to the floor.

"AMBER!" she called out, and her first instinct was to run to her. But she could only stand.

"Amber? Amber..."

They were supposed to make it home together! Not this. Definitely not this. Amber was supposed to live. There was a way you could live from that, right? They could just patch her up and she'd be as good as new! She was fine, really! Perfectly fine! Right? Right. Just a bit of gauze, disinfect it, and she'd be fine!

Huh?

Lyn's senses were dulled as the pickaxe pierced through the girl's chest, not quite understanding the ramifications of what she'd done.

Until the scream. The scream brought her right back to reality. The scream went right past her ears and straight to her brain. The scream went under her skin and chilled her very bones, like the wail of a banshee. It left her paralyzed as the girl pulled herself free of the pickaxe and stumbled backwards, crying out for help and asking why she would do such a thing, to which she could only stare.

"I...I-I..."

Lyn felt horrified. She felt relieved. She felt horrified that she possibly even CONSIDER feeling relieved at a time like this. But why shouldn't she? She did it. She filled their damn kill quota. She's safe now. Only she didn't know it would be like this. A multitude of emotions played tug-of-war inside her as the girl bled out in front of her in a most undignified way. What should she do? Should she run? Should she try to help her?

Suddenly, a second girl ran out to futilely tend to the girl who was most certainly dead by now.

"I-I just..."

Her hands tightened around the blood-soaked pickaxe as she watched the new girl.

"I just...I don't want to die..."

Suddenly, a new thought popped into her head. The new girl's distracted and unarmed. There's no way she could react in time. She slowly raised the pickaxe, little by little. Just take care of her, and you got yourself a nice gun to defend yourself wi-

A sudden spike of nausea cut off her train of thought. Fuck. FUCK. She had to get out of there. Get the fuck out of there, as far away as humanly possible. She staggered backwards, allowing herself to stare at the carnage she caused one more time before she tore her eyes away and bolted down the hallwa-

*BANG*

Lyn's eyes went so wide as to threaten to pop out of her head as a sharp pain tore through her side.

No

NO

NONONONONONONONONONO

The pain made her falter just for a moment, dropping the pickaxe and pack, but then suddenly she bolted even faster than before, self-preservation driving her harder. She didn't stop to check how severe the injury was. She couldn't stop. She just ran. She ran out the front door, and down the pathway, and ran and ran and ran, gritting her teeth against the agonizing pain.

I don't want to die.

I don't want to die.

I don't want to die.

But Carol found herself running towards Amber.

Suddenly, everything was a blur. Lyn stared down at what she had done, fright in her eyes. But she ran, and Carol remembered grabbing the gun.

Her mind wasn't focused in the panic, and she could feel herself hyperventilating. The gun shook in her hand, and she had it pointed out in front of her.

Unfortunately for Lyn, her finger was on the trigger. And Carol was scared.

She decided to fire off a "warning shot", to make sure she left for good and didn't cause any more trouble. Without really thinking...

Carol fired.

Lyn seemed to react a bit, but she kept running, until eventually she was out of sight. Carol could only watch as she ran outside. She probably wasn't coming back after what happened. Carol suddenly felt a pang of guilt.

Carol lowered the gun, still feeling her hands shake.

This wasn't supposed to happen!

They were supposed to be safe here. But everything turned out a mess. Amber and Marty were now dead, and Lyn and Karl had ended up killing them. Just because they were scared. Just because they were...

Carol placed the gun down and buried her face in her hands again, feeling herself beginning to sob once more.

All she could really manage for Marty and Amber was to place them in different beds and cover them up with the sheets. It had taken a while for her to get them in there, but in the end she managed. She had hoped to make it look like they had been resting peacefully, like they were still fast asleep. She put Amber in one room, and Marty in another.

It was the best she could do without a shovel, really. She made sure to close the doors behind her, and she never went back inside since.

She couldn't bare herself to.

And so she waited by herself in one of the rooms most of the day, still feeling unwell.

Carol wondered if she should have left, if she should have gone elsewhere. But she didn't feel like leaving. And so, day arrived and went, and night returned. Carol eventually felt herself wandering into and dozing off in the lobby sometime later that night, her body slumped in a weird smelling chair.

She had checked the kitchen. Nothing there. And she did eventually check her bag. She got a record. Carol didn't know how to feel about that.

Not many thoughts went through her mind, and slowly she felt herself going to complete sleep.

She was woken up again by the announcement.

April shot Ben. Karl she knew about, and didn't want to remember.. And...

Paige?

Carol raised her head.

Oh no...

Paige wouldn't do that! She wouldn't hurt Aileen! Aileen was fine! Really! He must have been like... making things up! Really!

The announcements continued, and went on to say Timothy, Harold, Simon, Corrina, Nick...

... Amber...

... Sally, and Preston were gone.

Carol felt herself wince, trying to block it out. She heard a dim reference to the "resort hotel", and soon after it ended she heard her collar start beeping.

And suddenly she remembered.

"I'll also tell you some areas where you can't go, handily enough these are called danger zones, and if you stay in them, there will be lots of lovely candy. Just kidding. You explode."

She bolted her head up.

She had to get out of here.

Grabbing the chair leg, the gun, and her bag she had brought down from upstairs, she felt herself starting to run as the beeping got louder and faster.

The door was so close.

She could make it.

She could make it.

Oh god please just let her make it!

Carol felt herself make it out of the exit as the beeping followed her, and ran as far as she could.

The beeping eventually stopped when she got near the jungle. The second it stopped, she felt herself collapse to the ground, exhausted.

Without a thought in the world, she fell asleep on the spot, resting on her side with her bag, gun, and chair leg close by.
