Dead Man's Hand

"Okay." Keita didn't know what else to say. Or if he should say anything right now.

The pain in his hand had shifted, so he figured he was free to move and go to sleep. But before that...

"I... I will go use the bath for a bit." With this declaration, Keita stood up from the bed and exited the room. Before Fumiyo's arrival, he had already checked out the rest of the clinic, so he made his way to the bathroom without searching around.

Curses could be heard through the walls.

...

Two minutes later, an old toilet was flushed.

Fumiyo tried to busy herself with barricading the clinic up a little more, ignoring the curses as best as she could.

What was going on in there...?

Finishing his business brought a new revelation: missing two fingers sucked hard.

Each time Keita tried to do anything, he instinctively reached out with his right hand, realized that doing the task without a middle and pointer finger was much harder and use his left hand instead. This happened for the doorknob, the toilet seat, the toilet paper and finally the button to flush his work down. Every single time, he felt like a fool. Would this go on for the rest of his life? Even thinking about this made him feel worse, so he tried to focus on something else. Like the fact that he was sweating like crazy.

Thankfully this was an issue he could do something about. The bathroom featured an window made out of opal glass. Opening it allowed a fresh breeze to enter the room. Apparently the island had been evacuated weeks ago, with no one making sure that ventilation was given to the rooms.

Looking out of the big window, Keita saw a car parked in front of the clinic. Apart from that there was only forest and a street leading elsewhere.

It was a weirdly peaceful sight. But he could feel the situation they were in gnawing at him, even when he tried to just take in some scenery.

"Guess I will just try to get some sleep." He silently spoke to no one in particular.

Keita had no clue what tomorrow would bring. Maybe the news that the program had been cancelled. Or that everyone else was already dead.

Now that is a truly shitty thought.

After shoving the window so it was closed again, Keita left the room.

Unbeknownst to Keita, the hinge of the window was almost as old as the building. As a result, just shoving it wasn't enough to keep it closed.

At some point during the night, a faint wind pushed against it, and the window, large enough that an adult could easily climb in, was wide open once more.
