Whatcha Gonna Do

[Open]

The forests and tropical air suddenly gives way to the cold of the frozen north thanks to snow machine which can be heard chugging away for miles. Snow on all sides, there is a small abandoned lodge, a rental booth, and a ski lift leading up a large mountain. The ski lift is non-operational, the motor obviously purposely destroyed. The only way up is a small railed path, slick with ice and snow.

[[OOC: This is my shitty apology post for taking so long to post considering the deadline we're on. I'll probably edit it later, this is just a time-to-move-on kind of placeholdery thing.]]

So Lynn headed up the stairs, after Peter, the cute boy, who was endlessly irritating to her with his whole cute-boyness. Okay, not really, not actually, hard to hold a grudge against him for that, but...come on. Was this really what she should be thinking about right now? No, she should be thinking about not dying, which...admittedly she was also thinking about. Or the opposite of that, really. Dying. She was thinking about that. Fuck her head was muddled. She needed a nap or a Red Bull or maybe someone to punch, that always woke her up. Except if she punched anyone here they'd probably shoot her back.

Also the closest person to her was that cute boy she was just thinking about.

Wait, no, that girl, Renée, she was right behind her, and she was a bit closer. Wait, since when was she coming upstairs? Hadn't Lynn fled up the stairs to follow the cute boy and to, like, get away from all these nice people (and the one not-so-nice one) who were okay and everything but not cute nice boys? Had she...

Lynn blinked and looked over at Peter, who was looking back at them. Them...her, rather.

Oh.

Ohhhhh.

Well then. Fuck me.

This was exactly what she deserved and she knew it.

Whatever. Peter checked the first bedroom, and apparently there was nothing inside, which was good, she figured. Nothing was better than something. Something likely lying in wait with a big gun. Yeah, she decided letting Peter stay ahead was a good idea, but she followed after, determinedly looking at everything but Renee.

Awkward.

Renée followed as the group checked the upstairs. Peter glanced back at them once or twice, seeming to look at her. Good. He was watching his back, and hers too, not trusting Lynn entirely yet. That was for the best.

He checked a room, declaring it clear. Renée glanced in, confirming his assessment. It was a little awkward, the group of them there all together. She wasn't really sure what to do, how to handle this. this wasn't a situation she'd ever seen on SOTF TV before. She was setting the precedent here, showing the next generation of fans how it was done. Nuts.

So she just sort of stood there for a second, considering. Finally, she said, "Well, that's good. I don't think there's anyone else here, at least, no one hostile. We haven't been very quiet, so anyone planning to attack us would have found us by now."

She was hoping that the place was empty. If someone was hiding, though, they were probably just scared. That could be a danger if they were startled, so it was probably best not to actually tear the whole place apart searching, at least, not without being loud enough to provide some forewarning. Hopefully, anyone there would be friendly, would come out on their own.

It would be nice, actually. Something to break the air of awkwardness over them all.

Timothy was saying stuff, stuff about them making a great team, complimenting her, all that. It was really embarrassing, well, embarrassing might not have been the word she was looking for, but she really hoped he would stop.

Maybe it was a guy thing. Kathy wasn't quite sure how much of it was really true, how much he really meant of all that. And she kind of wanted him to stop, because now she was starting to blush and who knows where that could get her. She didn't really want to deal with this sort of stuff right now - it just complicated things, and she wanted her goals to stay plain and simple.

She couldn't say she didn't enjoy the attention for once, but...

No. Moving on. She'd gotten paper but she'd need pens and pencils to actually get the whole writing thing operational. And from what Timothy was saying, there weren't any in the drawers. Goal-oriented. That's what she'd have to be.

"Y-yeah, um..." Kathy looked around. "Let's check the desks and floors and stuff. Maybe they took them all out, but someone might have dropped a few."

She got on her hands and knees, checked under the desk. Nothing.

Well, nobody said it would be easy.

"Damn you lady luck, putting me into such a situation. Do you enjoy messing with me?" Timothy couldn't turn his eyes away from the girl in the room with him. There was no denying that he wanted something from her that he knew, he really knew, was completely wrong for him to want from a girl who was basically a stranger. At the same time, he also knew that any day might be his last day alive in this place. He had tried to keep his mind from wandering to this train of thought; he tried thinking about survival and strategy and whatnot but it was no help at all.

He swallowed nervously. "Uh... well that's possible, but it could take a while to find one." He reached for the gun, he didn't even know why he was doing that but he was doing that anyway. He adjusted his glasses and cleared his throat.
What was the one thing that drew Tim to the gangster world? What made it more appealing than anything else he had known? The style. The look, the speech, everything about it was as cool as could be. Sure the people he enjoyed reading about or watching in movies and videos were criminals. He knew that they were bad people and menaces to society. But they were so goddamn cool. What's more, there were some things that even they wouldn't do. No doubt the worst of them were truly evil people, but even evil has its standards. And Timothy, idolizing them, knew that if he became like them, he'd stick to their standards. No matter what, he always hold that style and substance of gentleman-hood to higher importance than anything else.
So why was he doing what he was doing? "Kathy... Miss Clements..." he started moving towards her, gun in his right hand. "You know, we're all alone here right now. And I do mean alone, no one else around." He stood above her, looking at her almost studiously. She was so pretty, so enticing. Surely it wasn't wrong to want her. Surely it wasn't wrong to expect her to want him. Why would it be? They were both that age, and they were people who were made for each other.

"Now I know you want to look for a pen or pencil of some sort, but can't that wait a while? I mean, there are no enemies here." He crouched down next to her right, his heart beating faster and faster. "So what's the rush? Surely there are other things to do. I know of a few things we can do right now. We can share stories, we can talk about home, we can..." he placed his left hand on her back, "get to know each other."

This was wrong. This was so completely wrong. He was dangerously skirting a line that he didn't want to cross. What if she rejected him? What if she thought he was creepy? What if— "NO! No she won't. And if she does... I-I've got the gun." It wasn't wrong. It couldn't be. It had to be right. Had to be. HAD TO BE.

One last thought came into his mind before he finalized his decision. "Those gangster guys... they were villains Timothy. No matter what they did or didn't do, they were villains." Villain. He liked the sound of that.

((Skipping to remain active))

No luck. The situation remained as awkward as ever. No one appeared. Renée sighed.

"Maybe we should go back downstairs, make sure no one's showed up? We wouldn't want Tim menacing someone else," she said. The key part of her statement was the pronoun. "We". No way was she leaving without the other two. That would be a poor tactical choice. That was all.

"Come on," she said, taking a couple of steps towards the stairs.

Kathy was confused, at first. She had a bad feeling, a weird cold feeling, when Timothy started talking, talking about how they were alone. She knew they were alone, except for the others, searching upstairs. It didn't make sense, to tell her what she already knew. She didn't catch the hint, didn't catch it until later.

Then he started suggesting that they put off the search for awhile. That coldness in her gut grew, for entirely the wrong reason. She didn't want to put off the search - she just had a few more goals to accomplish. Then what? Then... death? She didn't want to think about that.

Kathy hadn't been paying complete attention to Timothy's words, to be honest. Not until she felt the slight pressure of his hand on her back, heard the last few words he said.

He had her full attention now.

She pushed him away, towards the desk, then scrambled back on her feet again. She was breathing heavily as her feet moved her away from Timothy. Why had she done it? Maybe he didn't mean any - but the tone, the touch - she was overreacting - this was ridiculous!

And her hands, having jumped to the cane, twisting nervously as confused thoughts sprang to the forefront of her mind, suddenly felt the wood give way. And she was holding a sword.

She dropped the swordcane, flung it to the ground, which was true she would never be sure afterwards. Probably the former; her hands were numb. It was all too much. Where had all the simplicity of her goals and wishes gone?

Kathy hadn't reacted how Timothy had hoped at all. In fact, her reaction was the exact opposite of what he wanted. The little version of her he had in his mind was a far cry from the reality before him. He got up, took a glance at her weapon, lying on the floor next to her. There were a lot of things going through his head at that moment. But one thought came to his mind more than the others.

He adjusted his sunglasses. "Wrong choice." He checked to make sure the gun was ready to go. "So this is how it's gonna be is it? I help get you what you want, and get nothing in return? I ain't running a charity here princess." He pointed the gun at Kathy. In the back of his mind, he was screaming at himself not to do this, not to hurt her. But the rational, good-natured-at-heart self was at the back of his mind. The front of his mind, had given way to the villain inside him.

"You know, I expected more from you guys. All of you. I mean, I wake up here knowing exactly where I am and what I'm supposed to do. I accept that I'm gonna have to kill a few people to get out of here, because if I don't then I'm just one of the guys who gets himself killed. Then I meet you," he tipped his hat, "and for a moment I'm thinking maybe it ain't so bad being here. So you convince me to head out onto this stupid quest of yours, for paper of all things. We run into the others along the way," he placed his hand in his pocket, "and we formed a little team." He put some extra emphasis on that last word, but the way he said the sentence was anything but straight. It was as sarcastically delivered as he could possibly muster.

"Now, I get that I'm not everyone's best friend. But to find that no one, not a SINGLE ONE OF YOU," he paused for a moment, trying to keep himself from shouting anymore and drawing attention from upstairs, "not one of you likes me. That's a little much don't you think? So all of you hate me. I get it now. Guess what, I hate you all too. In fact, I'm done with this team. 4 of you, 3 kills for me and 1 useless teammate outta the way."

He smiled. This feeling was incredible. It was so relieving to not have to hide his discontent, to tell it like it was. "God. I should've did this from the get go." He looked down at the cane, then back at Kathy. "I wanted you. I liked you I guess. Doesn't matter now. You're dead to me. Pick up the cane, try your best to come at me. This'll be a civilized execution. You get a chance to fight before I shoot you dead, bitch." His smile grew wider. "Or run. Run away little girl. RUN FROM THE ONLY FUCKING GUY WHO EVER GAVE A DAMN ABOUT YOU!"

It was too much wasn't it? He was over-reacting. Surely that was it. But the more he spoke, the more his anger grew. So much that all he could think about was blowing open that pretty little head of hers. He couldn't wait to see just how much brains she had to have in that skull if she honestly thought denying him was a good idea.

[[OOC: Placeholder because I'm tired and going inactive and bluhhh I need to get Lynn killed at some point.]]

Lynn followed Renee down the stairs, irritated at her poor luck and complete failure at this flirting-with-the-cute-boy bit. Not that she'd ever been particularly good at it and not that this was the time for it at all but whatever it would've cheered her up a little possible.

Downstairs, there appeared to be shenanigans. Lynn didn't like shenanigans, did not want to be involved in shenanigans, and so she stopped dead on the stairs and backed up a few steps, trying to keep herself from being seen.

Peter began to follow Renée and Lynn, convinced that they had done enough poking around. Halfway down the stairs, he heard Tim shout. He did sound scared. He sounded... mad. Furious.

Oh Jesus Kathy.

Peter broke into a full rush, beginning to run down the stairs, two at a time, until he was at the bottom. He stood with Lynn and Renée for only a heartbeat. It was long enough for him to guess what was happening.

Tim pointing a gun at Kathy. Pretty self-explanatory.

He reacted quickly, and without thinking too. Running out behind the girls, he quickly positioned himself between Kathy and the gun-toting psycho. It wasn't until he was looking down the barrel of a gun that he fully realized what had happened.

OH MY GOD WHAT DID I JUST DO I'M SO STUPID.

"Step off, Tim. I don't know what's going on, but if you hurt her, you'll have to deal with us."

Oh shit he's going to shoot me I'm so scared I don't know what to do April Jeanie please help me oh god oh god oh goooooooood.

"I'm about to kill the only person who I even give a damn about in this place. God I'm so messed up."

Timothy had made up his mind. Though part of him still begged himself not to go through with it, he had long passed the point of no return. He was a murderer in every sense but fulfillment of the deed. He was going to work on that part.

Right when he was going to deliver some final words to his first kill, someone got in his way. Someone he REALLY hated. Pete. Peter. He made a weak little threat that had no possible way of being backed up. Like the others could do shit to him when he had the advantage of range, not to mention shots per second.

"Mr. Campbell, you're interrupting something rather important." His finger hovered over the trigger. "This shot wasn't meant for you, but I suppose I can make an exception seeing as how I hate your guts."

Timothy smiled once more, and pulled the trigger.

BANG! BANG! BANG!
The river came up. Timothy held his breath in anticipation as the obligatory card was 'burned'. The next card was moved into position, and flipped over.

A 4 of Clovers. Sorry suckers, it was all over. Betting went around, nearly everybody folded but a few people didn't.  Though, it still took a while to reach the people he was actually worried about. He didn't really have the nerve to ask why the game was so... big.

No need to ask questions of that sort with the kind of prize at stake. Then again, he didn't really know just how much the prize was worth. Didn't matter, he was told it was huge, and so he just had to win. Peter and Reneé stayed in. So did he.

Now came the showdown. Most everybody had crappy hands. Pairs, two-pairs, three-of-a-kinds, nothing really much to worry about. Peter revealed his hand. 2 10s, making his the highest three-of-a-kind in the showdown. No wonder he was so confident.

But Timothy only smiled as his turn to show came up. Sorry Pete, Straight beats Three-Of-A-Kind. Looks like everyone else at the table was knocked out of the competition by that single revelation. All except for Reneé. She was up next, and her hand was—

Despite having read that manual forward, backward, sideways, and every other way he could think of, nothing really prepared Tim for the feeling of firing that gun. Three shots fired in quick succession, and the shock at the result of their impact, was enough to knock the gun out of his hands and onto the floor. He wasn't prepared for that feeling, hadn't positioned his hands properly, and was paying the consequences.

"Goddammit." He quickly got down and retrieved the gun. He wasn't in an advantageous position anymore, but he was damned if he wasn't going to try and get that advantage back. "D-don't fucking move!", he yelled to the girls, not actually expecting them to obey.

He had lost control, he was a murderer, he lost his cool, and he got blood on his suit. Blood that wasn't his. Blood that stained deep and would mark him as a killer no matter how far or fast he ran.

"Stay calm. Stay smooth. Stay suave. Bad guys can still be cool. Bad guys can still be cool."

He looked at Kathy one last time before pointing the gun at the others. For a brief moment, he considered saying that he was sorry.

That moment died just as quickly as Peter no doubt would.

Kathy had just opened her mouth. Somehow, she was holding the cane that wasn't just a cane again, but that didn't matter. She was going to say something, say something that would make it all better. Not really. She didn't dare to expect anything - but she had been about to try.

Instead, Peter jumped in front of her, then gunshots, and like a coward, she flinched. By then it was too late. By the time the gunshots rang out it was already too late, no matter what she had done afterwards.

The words came anyway - the stupid words that didn't mean anything anymore.

"Tim, I like- liked you. But not that way, and now you've-" What was the point? Was she really going to do this, after he'd just shot someone, right in front of her? Someone that had been trying to protect her? The words that came up were 'I'm sorry,' but she knew it wasn't her fault that Timothy had misinterpreted her. Probably. And she would have said the words, to stop the situation from getting any worse, regardless of whether they were true or not. A little compassion, or something. But now...

Now she couldn't say them. It would make no difference. Nothing she did right now would make a difference. Optimism failed her.

Kathy Clements ran.

It all fell apart. Renée saw Tim, saw what he was doing. She knew she had to act. It was time to play the hero. She was frozen, though, too shocked to quite grasp everything. On some level, she couldn't believe one of her own teammates would do such a thing. It was lucky Peter was there. He was a hero in his own right. She'd made a good choice, talking to him, listening to him, bringing him along. She liked him. He was the one person on her team she could absolutely trust.

Even considering that, it hurt a little more than it probably should have when Tim made his stupid little speech and gunned Peter down.

Renée reached to her pocket, removed the straight razor, and flicked it open as Tim fumbled, then reclaimed his gun. He issued some threat. It was old hat stuff. She'd seen players do it a thousand times. She'd seen it work, too, every so often. Some idiot stood still, then they got tortured or shot to death, or, if they were very lucky, left to live with their cowardice.

They made the stupid choice. The right thing to do was to take action, right away. Be a hero.

Renée wasn't so good at the speedy responses, but this time, she was mad, mad enough to spring into action. So she let out a yell and ran at Tim, razor ready, prepared to do the right thing and purge her team of a murderous, psychotic player.

Peter felt his knees shake. He could barely hear what Tim was saying, but he knew one thing.

This guy was straight up batshit crazy.

Peter opened his mouth to respond, but before he could even make out a whimper, three hot lead bullets tore into his chest, leaving finger-thick holes in his flesh. He looked down to his torso, raising his hands to cover his wounds, now leaking blood, beating out at a rhythmic pulse with his heart.

His extremities numbed. His lungs filled with blood. Each new breath felt more and more like drowning. Peter fell to his knees. Blood began to rise into his mouth, trickling out onto his chin. His body began to feel heavier and heavier. He put out a blood-soaked hand to support himself.

Which slipped and caused him to fall onto his right shoulder.

Bloody, laying on the floor, Peter looked to his murderer, the wannabe gangster. His blood-stained lips curled into a last smile, and he said,

"I hope you choke on a cock and die."

The edges of his vision began to blur, and then slowly fade. April, Jeanie. Sorry, guys. Looks like it's time for this player to make his exit...

(Apologies for just messing up the post order. =( This took way too long to get out. Sorry all.)

Tim heard Peter's last words, but he couldn't really say that they were of any consequence to him. For at the moment, an enraged girl with a straight razor was charging him.

The smart choice would simply be to gun her down and be done with it. Running straight into bullets was not very conductive to continued life.

But the rage in her eyes turned the new murderer's blood ice cold. Once more, he panicked. Once again he did something stupid.

Timothy got up, and bolted. He ran faster than he even knew was possible for him to run. He dropped his hat, and his sunglasses slid off his face and onto the floor. It didn't matter. What mattered was living. And sticking around her wouldn't help that.

"You ain't seen the last of me, Ren. You ain't seen the last of me!" he yelled out, running into the fake blizzard, hoping to hell that would conceal his tracks and help him to lose his 'teammate'.

He was still so very afraid, but he just couldn't keep himself from laughing. He laughed all the way into obscurity, his fate sealed.

Renée shouldn't have stopped. She shouldn't have paused, not even for an instant. It was clear Peter was dead. She had to be sure, thoughm had to make it sink in, just a bit. When she failed to catch Tim right away, when he fled, she stopped for just a second, just a moment to place her hand on Peter's neck (was that the only physical contact they had ever had? He'd already felt like a true friend), to check for a pulse.

There was none. He was really gone.

Renée's eyes were tearing up, but her anger remained. Tim had maybe ten seconds of head start. No way she was letting him get away. Teams didn't matter. He was a villain. He was a murderer. He was going down.

"Try not to die," she managed to shoot in Lynn's direction. Kathy was gone. Renée hoped Tim wasn't chasing her. Just one more reason to get moving.

So she bolted out the door. She could see his tracks, could see him, a form in the distance, and she ran, but he was running too, and she had short legs and was gasping through tears and it wasn't that long before she slipped on the snow and tumbled down a small ridge.

By the time she got herself pulled back together, he'd vanished. She'd lost his trail. All there was left to go on was a rough direction. She considered going back to Lynn, but her heart wasn't in it. She had to find Tim. A hero didn't let a villain get away unscathed. A hero didn't let a murder go unpunished. She was not a perfect hero, but she was going to do her best, and that meant that her dealings with Tim were far from over.
