You Remind Me

"BLOOD! GOD YES, BLOOD!" AnArchy screamed triumphantly. She watched as the boy collapsed to the ground, a nice display of deep crimson staining his burial clothes. Lovely. Beautiful.

"MORE! YOU NEED TO BLEED TOO MY DARLING!" She yelled. More gunfire sounded, and she punctuated it with the sound of her own rifle going off, adding to the quick cacophony.

She needed to taste that iron delicacy again. She needed that boy's very lifeforce inside her. She needed to make every fiber of her being jump for joy at the consumption of precious sanguine wine.

Why? It didn't make any sense. They didn't make any sense. After she had just shot Colin, they were still here. They didn't have anything left, no reason to stay. Well, the girl was just stupid, but the guy was a mystery.

Fine. She'd go. Her fingers couldn't even put the rounds in her gun, still cold and scared as she felt the bullets burrow into the metal table against her back. She didn't even like this place anymore, they ruined it for her.

She peeked out over the table again. They were still behind their own cover. It was hard to see, her vision was blurred. She had really liked this place. She ran, bag and gun in opposing hands.

She had to start all over.

Jackson had emptied about half of his pistol's magazine before he realized there was no return fire and, probably, no more attacker.  His hands, clasped around the gun, were shaking so bad he almost discharged another round.  Would have, if he didn't take his finger out of the trigger guard.

He breathed some of the burning out of his lungs, not even realizing he had been holding his air.  He slouched back against his cover, shaking his head, trying to comprehend what happened.  

"Ana."  He said over to his companion, hoping to get her attention if there was any lucidity left to be tapped into.  "I think we're done."

Someone called her name after the gunfire ceased. There was no return fire from the girl. Ana peeked her head out and when it wasn't blown off immediately she took it as a sign the enemy was gone. Time to go to work then.

"In a minute deary. I need to take care of something real quick."

She swiftly moved over to the corpse. She smattered her hand in the blood pooled on the ground and brought the mess to her lips. Vile. Monstrous. Wondrous. Rapturous.

She shuddered with delight.

"I never thought I'd be a hemophiliac but I guess we learn something new everyday."

She stood up and wiped her mouth. The blood smeared across her face. It felt amazing on her.

"So. Still with me?"

By then Jackson was standing, taking stock, gathering what little constitution he had.  Ana asked one hell of a question.  The prior outbursts were bad enough.  But the fact that she posed her query with some of Colin's blood

we were just fucking talking to him

smeared on her face like errant streaks of lipstick colored the circumstances even darker.

Jackson looked at his gun, then the floor.  A spot of Colin's blood was staining the floor between his feet, and he focused on it.  He wasn't sure he could look at Ana in the face.  He didn't want to see what he had been paired with.

He knew he couldn't split, regardless.  Maybe he thought someone had to keep her out of trouble, for her late boyfriend's sake.  Jackson had nothing left but his integrity.

"Yeah."  He said.  He chewed the inside of his cheek for a second, then sighed.  "Yeah, let' s go."

No, not him. Don't drag him into this.

Why not? It'll be fun!

Just us. Just me. Leave him alone.

And risk losing the last of the stability you have left? Not a smart move.

But I want to play some more!

NO! YOU STAY OUT OF THIS!

She stood frozen for a moment. A crazed smile gave way to a scared frown. Her eyes came out of that bloodlust and became clear again.

"No. No. No, no no." She spoke clearly, but urgently.

"It's not safe. I'm not safe. I'm- I'm different. Run." She pleaded. "Jackson you have to leave now! Run while you still can because I won't be able to hold myself back again!" She picked up the rifle and clutched it to her chest. "Leave now! Go! If you have any loyalty to me left then leave me here!"

"Run! Run, please!"

The moment of lucidity took away his confidence.  

Jackson took a step back, but otherwise stood his ground.  Still, he was decided now.  He was young, but even he knew when someone was beyond his capacity to help.

He licked his lips, feeling them uncomfortably dry.  He searched for some words, some parting shot to leave on.

"Don't do anything else you might regret."  He offered, and then he was heading back out into the door, a mariachi sin una banda once again.

"Goodbye." She said, holding back tears.

She sniffled and turned to face the camera.

"My name is Anastasia Arcadia. I'm a liar, a manipulator, a fiend. I hate the world and everyone in it. And so I decided to use that hatred as a constructive force. Pretend I love humanity. Try to force myself to want to see everyone happy. And for the longest time I believed my own lie. But it was always a lie. From the start." She sank to her knees.

"Today, Anastasia Arcadia dies. Whatever memory people have of me, the lie or the truth, it doesn't matter anymore."

She positioned the rifle barrel to her face.

"To all those watching. This is my last request. When I die, don't think of me as anything other than a girl. I'm no queen. I'm not even a leader."

She closed her eyes one last time.








They opened again.

She started laughing. "What, was I really gonna do it? Damn, me, that was close. Well now," she smiled for the cameras. "Anastasia went to sleep, forever. But AnArchy is here to entertain you all. So enjoy yourselves as you watch the dominant fragment of a shattered and twisted mind revel in chaos! First things first."

The monster moved over to the corpse again. She took her sword and cut into him. Drew more blood. She drank deep.

"Fuck yes! I love this shit! And I want more. So more, shall I get. I lost my physician and my king to a regicidal barbarian. A hopeful ally was cut down by a mad savage. And for some reason that sad lonely fragment of the girl I used to be let my herald go."

She rose to her feet.

"I am in dire need of subjects. No, not subjects anymore. I am a goddess. Right? I need worshippers!"

She set out to find them.

Hey, you still there? Anastasia. You there?

No but I am.

Are you there?



Gone. So I really am dead. Fail.

Epic fail!

Yeah. Nice knowing ya chica. Me and crazy are up.

No, just me. Goodbye superego! Hello ID!
