Boyhood

lol I'm not even in this thread anymore I have no power here

The Aloha Daycare Center is made up of two parts. A small building painted to look like a bright tropical beach scene and a larger play area made up of multiple rope bridges, ball pits, platforms up to higher areas and slides. Inside the building is an area more suited for younger children so that they can play without the risk of the bigger play area because of this the floor is matted and there are many beanbags and soft foam blocks lying around for the kids to play with. The idea behind the center is that it’s where parents can drop off their kids before heading for a walk down the boardwalk or visiting the Palms Spa and Salon.

A lot changed as soon as his back was against the wall. He saw Davis falling into the pit. Saw him rummaging through his bag. Saw him pulling out some strange, ornate object. Saw him reaching for what he realized too late was a trigger.

He never saw the bullet before it tore through his outstretched hand. He felt it, though. Lead spinning wildly in a blur of destructive motion as it sheered through muscle and soft bone, its rotation spraying droplets of the mounting tide of blood and flesh particles about the the radius of its brief passage. Heard the soft clink of the metal pinging against the wall behind him. Felt the jagged, pulsing stump that used to be his left pinky.

"F-fuck..."

He was on his knees, clutching the diminished digit against his shirt to try and stem the flow. In the distance, Yagmur was lecturing him. Ordering him to fix up Davis and try to put things right. As much as he hated the large, lumbering man above him in that moment, he also wanted to thank him. He brought the first aid kits in their bags back into his memory.

Soundlessly, Gabriel rose to his feet and walked to his discarded bag. Inside, with his one working hand, he manged to quickly obtain the tools he needed for his hand. Stinging iodine drops burned through his marred flesh to help prevent infection. A large, sterile adhesive bandage was pressed tight to the wound to stem blood-flow. Later, he would give it a more thorough dressing, but right now he needed something quick and clean.

He wasn't staying for long.

There was a brief hiss as he turned back towards Yagmur and shouldered his bag. A brief step forward, like he was coming back for Davis. Then a growl.

"G-go fuck yourself, m-man."

He slipped out the door as quickly as his weak legs would carry him.

The girl he didn't know was the first to go, leaving her teammate behind, without a consideration for his well-being and safety, or even expressing good luck or some meaningless pleasantry like that. "Thank you for your help, it was very much appreciated," he called out behind her, keeping her tone as deadpan and monotone as possible, the only emotion being a slight twinge of bitterness and frustration as he spat out the sarcastic words.

Then Gabriel got up, swore at him, and fucked off. Yagmur didn't respond to his departure, remaining stoic and emotionless throughout. That alliance was thankfully over. He didn't know whether attacking this poor bastard here was just tactics or sadism on Gabriel's part, but either way, it suggested a recklessness and ruthlessness on Gabe's part that made a long-term alliance unsustainable anyway.

That left him with Lisa, who had a less than desirable mental state, and Gabriel's victim. He looked at his gun, briefly considered a mercy kill. But the kid was dead or dying anyway, and he didn't want to deprive this poor kid who he didn't even know the chance to decide how to handle it.

So, with a gesture to Lisa to follow him, Yagmur left.

Suddenly, Louise went into one direction, Gabriel into a different one and Yagmur into another one again, though he motioned Lisa to follow him.

Lisa pondered whether to run after Loise or Yagmur first, before she recalled that she had an alliance with Yagmur based on baconnaise. And if you were to compare the bond between people who have known each other for a long time and the taste of bacon...

You choose bacon.

"Yagmur, wait for me! Uh, good luck Davis."

She glanced at Davis for a short moment before exiting the ball pool with the elegance of a manatee having a seizure.

It was a few hours till Davis' good eye would open. His torn eye socket sputtered flesh and blood as he breathed and wheezed, air making a whistling sound as it passed by the dark hole. Davis shifted out of the pit, carrying his bag and gun with him.

His body convulsed and spasmed as he tried to stand on the floor, only for bile to flow out of his mouth and making him fall on all fours. He crawled till he was inside the daycare center, shaking as he curled up on a beanbag chair. A bottle of painkillers was in his hand and his bandana draped his eye socket, blood staining it and seeping through the fabric.

He caressed his collar.

"Jared...fucking tell me anything..."

((Jewel Evans continued from We All Look So Perfect ))

The headset was familiar, in a way, now that it was operational and connected to her ear. Jewel's rig at home had been similar, though with larger headphones. Many good nights, she'd stayed up late playing SOTF Champions and marshaling her team through Skype. It was funny, how there were five to a team, just like in Champions. Had that perhaps been a part of the reasoning behind it? But then, five was a good number on the whole. Five was comfortable.

The daycare center, too, was comfortable. The small streaks of blood around the ball pit were small price to pay for walls between her and the gales. As she looked over the area, the warmth spread throughout her body, starting somewhere deep inside and emanating from her core. The dampness of her clothes now manifested through clamminess rather than biting chill. On the whole, an improvement. In her right hand was a slender ceramic vase that she'd picked up from a windowsill. It was heavy enough to give her a feeling of security.

Most likely cameras tracked her every step through the building. Most likely everyone saw as she knelt near the blood, touched it with her left index finger. It was sticky, mostly dry. From the corner of her eye, she saw a chunk of something lying on the floor. Echoes of past conflict.

She didn't look any closer. She tried to wipe the rust away on her skirt, but the sensation lingered, a ghost against her skin.

The area seemed abandoned. This was deceptive. Somebody had been hurt here, badly and fairly recently. No corpse was apparent. Her feet squished against the foam along the floor. Children had once played here. Someday, they would again, perhaps never aware of the death that had taken place, perhaps knowing.

There was a puddle of some other fluid not far from the blood. Streaks indicated a direction. Jewel followed.

Standing outside the entrance to a different section of the building, she heard the boy speak, a weak cry for help. She knew the name he asked for. If it meant what she thought, then an opportunity was opening up to her. The pounding had nearly become so much a part of her now as to fade wholly into the background, but hearing another voice brought it back, that thumping of blood through her veins.

So she stood right outside and listened.

A voice emerges from Davis's collar

"Well. I won't mince words. Not a good spot for you just now, buddy. What's done's done, so I'm not gonna ride you about that... but you're gonna need to take it easy and patch yourself up, it'll take time to get back on your feet...

Which, for the record, is pretty much a luxury you're not going to get. Mystery contestant number one awaits."

Jared actually spoke to Davis, kindly at that. He was in a brief state of disbelief, his silence evident in this place, it was almost unsettling. He stood up though, taking what Jared told him as truth. Someone else was here, not making themselves known.

He grabbed the gun from his bag, cracking the finger joints of his free left hand with his thumb, then switching the gun and then doing the same with his right. Jared knew it too, that even though Davis was injured as much as he was, he had to fight before he could go easy on himself. Right now was the time to go hard.

His grip on the gun tightened as soon as he began to speak, his voice graven and dry.

"If you're hiding, stop right now and come out."

"Alright," said Jewel, stepping around the door frame. The sight of the boy quieted everything. She became aware of her breathing. Had she been hiding? Each inhalation and exhalation required conscious effort. The loose, friendly smile she pulled out and then let slide to an expression of concern similarly mandated her attention.

The boy and the stained bandana covering one of his eyes were more interesting than the reaction they prompted. The bandana was mostly purple, and there was nobody else in the room, so she'd come to the correct conclusion about his words. The boy himself was hefty in a way that whispered to her of strength, though his height was restrained enough that they could have locked gazes evenly.

There was also the thing in his hands, an object which drew her focus a moment later.

It was a thing of wood and metal, gun married to blade, and it looked like something from a bygone age or perhaps originating in a picture in a textbook. She didn't know enough about guns to say for sure, but she suspected it didn't hold many shots. Was that the reason for the axe blade? It was solid and real in a way that Erik's weapon had not been. If she ran her fingers long it, it would be smooth against them.

"Are you okay?" she asked, stepping slowly through the doorway and reluctantly returning to his face. She had seen eye wounds a time or two on the show, but the angles usually weren't right to get clear or detailed shots. She didn't mind; her own eyes watered just at the thought. No need to watch a scalpel or needle move in, slowly closer and closer until its tip brushed against the center of a pupil and then finally broke the surface. "What happened?"

"No, no, I'm not alright."

Davis rolled up the sleeves of his shirt, inspecting the girl that came out behind the door. He didn't recognize her, but guessed she must be some kind of goth type. All she wore was black, black, and more black. Even seemed to be part of the same black-bandana team as Gabe, who attacked him, and Louise, who was somewhere else he couldn't bother to care about.

"A buddy of yours," he said, pointing at her bandana "came in and did this." he continued, turning his finger towards his soaked bandana.

He simmered down and exhaled out of his nose, fumes leaving him and his body slouching some. Gabe had his eye, but there was probably more then just Davis' blood outside, so there was comfort found there. He could at least tell himself that, even if he didn't know for sure.

"Don't know where he went, but he left. There was another one too, but I don't know where she is either."

The world vanished into blackness and then reappeared as Jewel blinked slowly. The bandanna on her arm came as a mild surprise when the wounded boy pointed to it. It took her a moment to comprehend what he was implying, because she had almost forgotten about the teams. That same hyper-awareness that had applied to her breathing now touched on every aspect of the game. Four—or presumably four, she had heard nothing that would imply anything else—strangers or schoolmates arbitrarily bound to her were facing their own struggles somewhere nearby. The collar around her neck was chilly like the earrings she now had tucked into her pocket had been and uncomfortable, loose enough not to constantly choke her but tight enough never to be forgotten.

Though this Jewel had never let slip her mind, there were cameras watching them, too.

"I'm sorry," she said.

Could she become friends with a boy who did this and a girl who aided him? Could she trust them? Teams were protection from each other, but only to a point. Mason Ross' only pre-finals kill lurked in her mind. Crazy defied logic.

Her gaze remained constant on the boy's face, though she was a little ashamed and didn't quite make eye contact. She wanted to look at the gun again, or maybe to peek under the bandanna and know just how bad it really was. The mystery prickled at her mind, just like it would have had she been watching at home.

She took her lower lip between her teeth and pressed down slightly, letting the pressure edge on light pain. So early game was ending. There were others getting serious, and two of them were her allies. Maybe the Black Team would be to Season Sixty-Six as Purple was to Sixty-Five.

A shiver ran through Jewel, not because it was cold, for compared to outside it wasn't, but due to a slight edge of chill, a moment where it seemed it could be cold that was just enough to provoke a reaction from her muscles.

"I'm Jewel," she said, with a nod and small smile. Because this boy wasn't from her school, so far as she could remember.

Davis leaned back on the wall, folding his arms as he settled. He felt somewhat faint now, not as riled up since his hint of danger was gone. He was about ready to smack Jewel if she had any ideas, but she seemed alright for now. Couldn't quite leave his guard down 100%, but he did feel a bit more relaxed now.

"Yeah, hi, Davis. Don't apologize for what isn't your fault."

He wasn't in the mood to really be making introductions anymore, after his encounters so far. It was all just crap to act as buffer so people didn't feel on edge, like they weren't where they were. Things were changing, and sooner or later people were going to have to do something. Once he had rested here some more, Davis knew he needed to head out and get going on his intentions too.

"Do you need something or are you just lookin' around?"

"A little of both." Jewel stepped further into the room while speaking. There would be a camera with a good angle on the door. "I've been outside for hours, and it's cold, and I haven't seen anyone else."

She let that sound sad. It was not a strictly necessary untruth. Davis didn't care who she'd seen. Lies were interesting, was the thing. One lie begat further deceptions. The boy in front of her might not ever understand, but he wasn't her target audience.

The shivers had gone out of her now. Her senses were still firing on full, still focused on the injured kid. Knowing his name was a good start. It gave them a connection. It made him more of a real person, something that was lacking when he was merely a face from the other school. Anyone at Whittree wasn't so different from him. Maybe they talked a little differently.

"You mind me warming up?" she asked.

"Nah, go ahead."

Davis began slumping down on the wall until he ended up sitting on the floor again. So much for going hard. Looks like he was going to get some luxury after all. The pain killers had made him more drowsy then he already was after the blood loss, so things seemed a little slower, a little more faded and fuzzy. The skin on his hand seemed to be shaking in waves as he grabbed the first aid kit.

"Don't look over here for a bit if you're squeamish."

With that, Davis lifted the bandana from his eye socket. It seemed to be gasping as he looked upon the contents of the first aid kit. Needed to apply something, get this wrapped up, before it decides to turn into a puss-fettered infection. Going off on those basic ideas, Davis went to work.

"If it hurts, that probably just means I'm doing it right...hopefully."

Jewel's course of action was laid by the way the boy moved. It was slow, sloppy. It was painful. He spread out the first aid kit. This meant he put that beautiful gun down. She didn't let herself look at it.

Of course, she didn't look directly at him, either, since he'd asked her not to. Her gaze focused off into the distance, taking everything in from the corners of her eyes. Davis was against the wall. From her peripheral vision, she saw the red on his face, just enough detail to know it was bad.

His posture likely gave the cameras a good look. The two of them were the focus. It was like on the stage at the cabaret, only now Jewel was the one standing tall.

She knew the boy was dead. He didn't seem to have realized it yet. Perhaps if the injury had been preexisting and he'd already adapted to it, he could've pulled a Samuel Adams and hung around a while. Perhaps if he'd woken up in a different place or encountered a different team, none of this would have happened. As it was, he'd lost blood and depth perception. She thought the eye might be all the way gone.

She stepped closer.

"Here" she said, "let me help."

The slender vase clasped in her right hand was smooth and solid and heavier than it looked. Jewel had almost forgotten it. She let it surprise her a little as it came swinging around, hammering down at his face.

Davis' good eye winced as he applied the anti-septic wipes to the empty socket. Infections could get horrible if the wounds weren't treated right away, and he didn't want to go out because he got sick. No way was that happening. Good things, big things...

He rubbed his eye, it tired and itchy. Jewel was talking again, saying she could help.

"Yeah, alright, if you co-"

The vase shattered into tiny shards as it came crashing against Davis' face. A few of the jagged pieces launched into his socket, stabbing and cutting the inside of his head, hitting the nerves and veins, cutting off his short howls and any chance he had left at living.

Davis wished he could have said he saw it coming, but that wasn't true no matter how you spun it.
