When Betting On High Card Pays Off

Even a straight flush can lose every now and then (Private)

This ship is a replica of a traditional clipper ship, painstakingly built to recreate the proper design elements and functionality. Originally used for filming and for theme tours in Southeast Asia, it was badly damaged when an inexperienced captain scraped a pier during a storm, and was put into dry dock pending repairs. Ultimately, however, insurance proceedings saw it declared a total write-off and sold for scrap. It has gashes in the sides that have been crudely but competently repaired, and inside the ships has wide expanses of wooden floor spanning two decks. The rigging is the most impressive part, with a crow's nest that serves as the highest point of the arena, should one dare venture up the rope ladder. A rather anachronistic yet fully functional cannon has been mounted on the deck, fixed in the vague direction of a section of outer marina, though only three cannonballs are present, each massive sphere tucked away in the back of the very bottom deck of the ship.

Lucky miss.

Jasper wanted to make this hard for himself that was fine with Fisk. He was just gonna make himself sound tired when the whole arena heard his screams like a second announcement.

If that bitch on the other side of the boat didn’t squeeze the trigger before James killed her, maybe they could take it and use it on Ivan the next time they met. Jamming it down his throat and turning him into a jack o lantern would make him regret what he did to Giselle. It wouldn’t bring her back, but it sure would make Fisk feel a whole lot better to watch that bastard thrash and wish he’d never been born.

Ah, but he was getting ahead of himself. Right now the task at hand was-

With a resounding clunk the blunt end of the hook smacked Fisk upside the head, filling his eyes with stars as he crumpled to the ground.

Instead of stopping or anything like that, Shoshanna had simply bolted, leading James to have to chase her down around the edge of the boat.

“C-Come on! I said stop!” He called after her, knowing, dreading that this would keep getting out of hand. But James had to keep going because with that gun she could just shoot him or Bacchia or Fisk and that would be that.

No one else knew when to back down. Everyone was so stubborn, so determined to fight this thing out.

Finally, Shoshanna came to a halt, only to spin around, gun pointed directly at James. Her words were indistinct to him, but it didn’t matter, since the meaning of the gesture was clear as could be. James felt his heart leap into his throat.

He couldn’t stop now, he was committed. He couldn’t stop now, he was committed. He couldn’t stop now, there was no path but straight through.

James clenched his teeth and closed his eyes as his body collided with hers.

The threat of immolation wasn't enough to stop the rampaging steer that was James. Before Shoshanna could even pull the trigger, the boy collided with her, throwing her off her balance. Shoshanna stumbled back and hit the railing.

She cried out as her spine hit the wooden railing. The sheer force of the larger boy hitting her caused her to drop the flare gun. She heard the gun hit the floor. This was bad. Her first fight and she was already disarmed and at a physical disadvantage.

Shoshanna tried to push back against the boy, but she was pushed along the railing until she felt her back freed from the railing. Without her realizing it, James had pushed her towards the ramp connecting the clipper ship to the jetty. With no backing, and aided by her attempt at forcing back against James, Shoshanna suddenly found herself falling backwards and off balance. She had stepped off the leveled ship deck and onto the sloped ramp, and that quick change left her disoriented enough that she fell backwards.

Shoshanna's lower back hit the ramp, causing her to cry out. However, when she landed, the majority of her body was already over the edge of the ramp. Before Shoshanna knew it, she was upside down and falling into the water. She let out another quick yell before she was deafened by the sea below, disappearing beneath the surface in a large splash.

Such a satisfying sound, metal slamming into someone's skull. Jasper felt a little disappointment that the hit hadn't been enough to kill Fisk outright, but that meant Scarboy could still feel the experience of dying. As far as he was concerned, he wanted this to be the worst thing Fisk ever experienced.

Let that be a lesson on insulting and trying to kill Jasper Suárez-King.

He was about ready to kill Fisk-hook raised and ready to come down wherever he pleased-but heard the struggle between Shoshanna and Blondie again. First Blondie's attempts to get Shoshanna to stop aiming her gun, then-

Screaming.

Jasper had just enough time to see Shoshanna disappear from view, one more cry being let out before some out-of-sight splashing could be heard.

For a millisecond, he didn't know what to think. His ally had just been thrown overboard, and if she hadn't landed correctly, or if Blondie had seriously injured her...

He would regret that decision.

Jasper had always been a gambler at heart. Dad had shown him the ropes of it ever since he was little. Making a bluff or a call, an especially reading your opponent? It was almost second nature to him at this point.

He had noticed the different colored bandana's for each person in Fisk's small group, but hadn't really taken note of them. He didn't really no any of the three well enough to say if they were friends, only really assess whether or not they would try to play.

But if they were working together this well? If they were as torn up about Giselle's death as Fisk seemed to be when the girl's death was announced? And if they were this willing to team up despite not actually being on the same team?

They had to have been friends before, no doubts about it.

So, despite his growing urge to slice out Fisk's vocal cords, he put that plan on hold at the moment, instead giving the mask-toting boy a hard kick to the ribs. (Thank God he knew to kick with the balls of his feet, otherwise his toes probably would've broke.)

After that, he kicked Bacchia's sword a good ways away before placing a foot on her definitely bruised ribs, and definitely speaking loud enough for Blondie to hear despite the distance, a smile on his face.

"So. Ready to die, Bacchia?"

It was a risk. Probably the biggest one he'd ever done in his life. For all he knew, Blondie actually had a gun and was just to hesitant to move before. Maybe this would be all the incentive Blondie needed to fire.

But there was still that chance that it would be the exact bait needed to get him running. For him to try and save his friend, only to fail miserably. To get all three of them down and vulnerable enough that he had no issues killing the trio.

And Jasper was never one to bow out from a gamble like this.

Everything is going to hell, was all that Bacchia could think as Fisk has missed his shot with taking Jasper down fully and Jasper had whacked him upside the head. She could only watch as Fisk crumpled to a heap on the floor and she knew that she should be making a move to slice at Jasper's legs or something like that. Her breathing was still a bit of a struggle and-

Sudden screaming. A female's voice. Bacchia had turned her attention to where James and the girl was and she just about caught Shoshanna going overboard. She was glad that James had taken care of that girl for now and that they could all concentrate on taking out Jasper. They were all doing poorly, but they had to find a way to get an upper hand on Jasper. Get him where it hurts. A better blind spot.

Before she could even do anything; the sword was kicked away out of her hands and she felt a foot weighing down onto her hurting ribs. She wondered for a second if this was how it had felt for Ivan when she had outright broke his ribs. She wondered if it had been worse.

"H-Hey, you-"

She was cut off by Jasper's sudden yelling. Wait, why was he shouting? Unless...

Her eyes widened in realization.

A trap. This was a trap for James.

She opened her mouth to shout at James to stay back. But she felt more pressure on her ribs and she hissed in clear pain.

“Oh Jesus-”

Shoshana went right over the edge, slamming into something and then splashing into the water. James didn’t look. He didn’t want to look, because he didn’t want to maybe look over and see her not coming up to the surface, just sinking down into darkness because he didn’t fucking stop when she demanded it.

But he had to stop her, and she might just be fine. He hadn’t wanted to kill her. It was fine, he just needed to breathe and calm down and curl up and wait for someone else to do something while he breathed and calmed down and-

Jasper shouted something, something about Bacchia. James spun around to see her and Fisk on the ground.

They’d lost.

James knew, he knew this was a terrible idea, that they were just fucking themselves over, and that it’d blow up in their faces somehow.

Not really thinking much, James snatched the gun Shoshanna had dropped off the ship’s deck and sprinted back towards the other Respects. He just had to get over there and do something to stop this, to just put an end to it so they could get out of there.

Stopping just a few feet away, he pointed the gun at Jasper, hands trembling slightly as he screamed at the other boy.

“J-Just stop! I can’t-!”

Yeah, he was overestimating Blondie in the intelligence to department. Or his heart was bigger than his head. Or maybe he was just being a huge simp and thinking with the head between his legs instead of the one between his shoulders. Whatever the case, it didn't matter.

Before he had even raised the gun-Shoshanna's gun, the little thief-Jasper was ready to swing. Not with the sharp end, surprisingly, but purposely using the blunt end this time, aiming for the hand. Sharp pain was already pretty likely to make Blondie drop the weapon, but blunt force was pretty much assurance that it would. The potential for some broken fingers was and added bonus, really.

He was tempted to step closer by actually walking over Bacchia, essentially putting all his weight onto her with the one foot-but decided against it. He was going to kill Bacchia, yeah, but at this point she was the only one of the three he genuinely had no grievances against. He hadn't been joking about 'No hard feelings.'

So, instead of putting all his bodyweight on Bacchia, he merely gave a half-strength stomp before moving his foot away. Not enough to break any ribs, probably, but certainly enough to keep her from getting back up.

He took a quick step forward-almost like he was trying to pass Blondie-before grabbing his shoulder with his right hand and moving his right leg to sweep out his legs. Holding the hook with only his left hand felt awkward, but was still manageable.

Then, the final 'Just In Case' precaution. As Blondie went down, Jasper aimed a kick square at his face. He doubted anyone would get up from that, at least not immediately.

He was almost tempted to gloat about his victory. A way to show no one should try underestimating him again. But he figured that this entire scene was enough.

He'd just have to settle for bragging about taking three at once when he got back home.

Gun knocked out of hand, James’s fingers hurt like hell, but he didn’t have time to even check or feel out the damage, because the next thing he knew…

James was knocked flat on his back, coughing and gasping as the wind was knocked out of him, staring straight up into the sky. He wasn’t really sure where he was in relation to anything but the ground anymore, like the whole rest of the world had been swallowed up into the ether as it spun around him.

Had Fisk and Bacchia just gotten him killed, or would he already be dead if he hadn’t joined up? It was the only thing he could think here at the end, and the only answer the world provided didn’t explain much.

Jasper didn’t say a word as his foot came crashing down onto James’s face, a battering ram connecting with bone and flesh. He could feel the sunglasses on his face snap as a piercing pain rose up from the center of his face alongside a certain warmness which trickled across his lips and cheeks.

More coughing, groaning, too dizzy to get up.

Hell, he didn’t much know which way was up.

There were three people attacking Jasper, not two, and judging by the splash on the other side of the boat maybe Jasper hadn’t been alone at first either; he was now though and since Akeno still wasn’t planning on getting involved he was going to stay that way. He really didn’t need the help though; Jasper was tearing them apart with even more ease than she expected from him.

Akeno was right to think he was one of the more dangerous individuals in this game; what he lacked in skill compared to her he more than made up for by being huge and strong.

And vicious, apparently. The viciousness kind of surprised her.

The new arrival pointed a gun at Jasper with trembling hands and for a moment things looked like they might go wrong. He didn’t fire it though, he hesitated; he just aimed it at her friend and pleaded with him to stop. The kind of thing people did when they didn’t really want to shoot, or knew they should but were hoping they wouldn’t have to. You couldn’t hesitate like that.

Jasper knocked the gun out of his hand with the back of the hook before he could fire and the weapon sailed across the deck before landing with a thud, bouncing, landing again and rolling end over end before finally coming to a stop near the edge of the boat. Near her.

While this was going on Jasper threw the other boy to the ground and kicked him in the face; brutal, but it was the right choice to make sure your opponents stayed down in this kind of situation. It left Jasper as the only one still standing on the deck; the other three were still alive, for now, but he was the only one still standing.

He began to look around, maybe trying to find where the gun had gone and after a bit of looking he saw it. Then he saw her.

They locked eyes.

Akeno opened her mouth to say something, congratulate him, when she saw movement behind him.

“No!”

Bacchia grunted when Jasper stomped on her side more and she knew that she was going to have some bruised ribs and skin on the outside. He had taken down James with ease and she felt annoyed that someone else had gotten hurt because of her.... ONCE AGAIN. She didn't need any more after what had happened with Keegan. But she couldn't let Jasper continue in his rein of complete power over them. This had been a completely terrible idea in the first place and she was going to need to have a very, very serious chat with Fisk about their failings later on.

If they could even get out of this alive.

She tugged off her mask and chucked it to the side a little. As it was blocking her vision of being able to see and they really needed something better than those irritating pillowcase-like masks. She wheezed softly and she felt something poking around in her clothing.

She felt around and took out the glass shiv. She gripped onto it tightly and it cut into her skin slightly. She didn't care. She had to stop Jasper somehow.

She heard a girl's voice yelling no and then Fisk's voice.

It was now or never.

She lunged her crumbled body forward a bit behind Jasper and she slashed the glass against the back of Jasper's knee. Letting out a loud, frustrating cry of anger.

Jasper turned his head to look Fisk in the eyes. Fisk stared back, too exasperated with this scenario to say anything else. This whole thing was a disaster. Giselle was gone, Ivan still drew breath, and this fucker was the one who was going to take them out? James should’ve shot, now he was on the ground. Fisk couldn’t even sneak up on the bastard what with his friend ratting him out. How many people were on this fucking boat?

This went from a shitshow to the whole poo-poo parade. A real crap carnival. A feculent festival.

But it wasn’t all lost. Bacchia lurched up, and cut Jasper’s knee out from under him. His attention diverted, his body crippled by one leg. If there was ever a time to turn it around, this was it.

No more bullshit. Fisk sprinted forward at the sound of Jasper’s yelp. Three paces worth of metal clanks, and Jasper only had enough time to turn his head back to Fisk, and raise an arm to brace himself.

Fisk’s arm froze. The blade of his shiv mere centimeters from Jasper’s eye. Both hands grasping Fisk’s wrist. Behind his mask, Fisk scowled. Even now this fucker thinks he won?! Make a fool of The Respects?

No.

Fisk inhaled. He let go of the shiv...

Caught it in his free hand. Jasper’s hands released Fisk’s arm but it was too late. Fisk brought the blade up under Jasper’s arms and imbedded it right into the center of his throat with a soft thunk.

Fisk twisted the blade and tore it out the side of Jasper’s neck, leaving a sideways L in it’s former resting place as cherry red arterial blood sprayed out like a thumb blocking half the nozzle of a garden hose.

Fisk stepped back as Jasper began to fold, watching him spill out onto the deck, still struggling to prolong the inevitable.

There was a breathless wheeze of a laugh coming from underneath the mask. “Looky-you hero. Guess you won’t die shrieking after all...”

He walked behind Jasper’s kneeling form to tend to his subordinates. On his way around he slid the hook away from Jasper with his foot, didn’t want any dying breath Hail Mary’s to come and bite him in the ass after all, that thing could take an eye out or two.

Even so, there was still the new arrival to worry about, but she hadn’t done anything to save her friend, so Fisk assumed that Jasper didn’t matter to Akeno as much as her own life did. Still best to watch his own back. Fisk wordlessly kept his outstretched arm holding his bloodstained blade pointed in her direction as he made his two steps over to his friends.

Jasper may have felt like the king of the world in that moment, but every king needed to be able to prevent a coup. Shoshanna's gun being brought over wasn't something he'd fully considered, and the best course of action was to grab it and potentially use it on Fisk. He could apologize to Shoshanna later-they were getting at least two extra weapons out of this fight, and while neither of them were guns, they would surely be enough to get back home without losing anyone.

He looked around to locate the gun. It couldn't have gotten that fa-

Akeno.

Akeno was there.

She looked Jasper in the eyes. Jasper looked back.

A sentence was forming in his brain. Greeting her and asking if she wanted to get in on any of this. He wasn't going for the win, anyway, so why not offer some help to get rid of the competition? Hell, she'd already killed someone. Maybe she would go for the ten kills. He would prefer killing Fisk himself, but he could get over it if he was helping his friend get out of here. If she didn't want to join them, anyway.

But just as these thoughts passed through his mind-just as he was opening his mouth to utter out a 'Hey!'-Akeno's eyes shifted, and she shouted.

He turned on the spot, and Jasper was face-to-scarred face with Fisk again.

Why couldn't Norman Bates' physically fucked up cousin just realize he was done?

But whatever. Jasper could handle Scarboy. Asshole couldn't even take him down in a two-on-one fight, so what chance did he think he have in a one-on-one-

The train of thought got derailed as pain flared up on the back of his knee-right? Left? He wasn't even sure of that much. It was so sudden that his focus went on making sure he didn't fall on his face. He hated the sound he let out from the pain, involuntary or not. It made him sound weak, and Jasper was not weak.

Fucking Bacchia. Apparently she didn't know when to stay down and accept death either. On second thought, maybe he should make her death painful. Send the hook in her gut before-

CLANK-CLANK-CLANK

These fucking people.

For a moment, Jasper thanked every class Akeno had brought him to. The other shit he could conceivably deal with and heal from. Might've gotten a cool scar on his side from earlier. He may've walked funny for a while, but the knee injury wouldn't kill him. But a knife to the eye? Even if he didn't die, that shit didn't exactly heal like everything else.

Fortunately, he wouldn't be dealing with a knife to the eye today.

Unfortunately, that didn't make a difference.

The blade fell. Fisk dropped it. Then he caught it.

Jasper tried to stop the other hand.

He didn't.

Pain exploded in his neck as the knife plunged into him. It blossomed to unbearable levels as it twisted, turned, and was removed from his body. He couldn't even feel the blood spray from how intense the pain had become.

He fell, grasping at his throat, trying to put pressure down on the wound-trying to make the pain go away.

Mask boy said something, and there was other noises, but the pain pain PAIN wouldn't let him focus on anything. He was just trying stop the bleeding, stop the PAIN!

As the world was quickly turning blurry, Jasper realized that this was how he was going to die. Not taking someone down with him. Not going out in a blaze of glory for the sake of his group or a friend. Not after decades of being at home, raising Catalina, traveling the world, and living his best life.

On a ship, God knows where, on the second day, right in front of Akeno.

Akeno.

Jasper's strength was already fading, but he had just enough to turn himself toward his friend.

The look on her face spoke horror. He ignored it.

There were tears streaming down his face, ones he couldn't hold back from the pain. He ignored them.

Just forcing himself to smile hurt, as the strength in his body was draining quickly. He ignored it.

Jasper just focused on Akeno's eyes, and was only able to mouth one word to her.

Sorry.

And then Jasper closed his eyes, the pain finally gone.

No.

Akeno pulled herself onto the boat, onto the deck, far too late to do anything. Jasper was already…

No, no, no.

She should have helped him. Of course she should have helped him. Or she should have just left, instead of distracting him at a crucial moment. He was winning, he’d won, until that happened.

She’d gotten him killed.

It wasn’t supposed to happen like that.

She’d killed him.

Akeno ignored the gun, she didn’t need it. As soon as her feet hit the deck she was throwing herself forwards into a dash towards the three hooded figures; fearlessly, recklessly, charging into a fight she’d just seen someone stronger than her lose. It didn’t matter. Her plan in Survival of the Fittest was to only pick fights she thought she could win, gradually build up the ten while avoiding those fights that were too risky; that plan hadn’t changed.

She’d just watched Jasper take these three apart; he was strong but she was a better fighter, not quite a ‘taught him everything he knew’ kind of situation, but similar. The three were hurt, they were tired and maybe, if they were smart, they were a little scared too. She’d win this fight, she’d kill them; she had to. She had to.

The one who’d killed Jasper was pointing the shiv at her now, still wet with blood, threatening her with it.

Like she cared. She’d rip his throat out.

Distantly, from the cruise ship, there were the sounds of little explosions.

A fraction of a second later, bursts of metal started raining down.

Somebody was watching.

Somebody was shooting.
