Mr. Wharf? Fire.

Fisher/Pippa/Freya continue; open

This area consists of both upper and lower wharves.

The upper wharf comprises a network of docks suited to both to receiving the fishing ships and passenger vessels common to Cabeza del Dragón and to less industrial-scale activity; the southern pier, older and somewhat out of repair, was a popular place for land-based fishermen to cast their lines. This area is made up primarily of wooden planks, stained with years of exposure to saltwater and sea air, and footing can be somewhat treacherous on the irregular, warped boards. While there is some thought given to safety, with guardrails posted in most areas not directly keyed towards the unloading of cargo, these nevertheless feature large gaps and in some places have fallen into disrepair. Cover here is scarce; a number of barrels, crates, and collections of containers and lumber may be found around the docks, but these tend to be positioned so as not to impede the flow of work, usually to the sides of avenues of passage.

The lower wharf lies beneath the upper, a shadowy maze of rocky beach and pier supports covered in algae and barnacles. Dead fish and crabs wash ashore in abundance, and there are areas where fishermen often dispose of their catch's unwanted heads, guts, and so forth. This leads to the area bearing an almost overpowering odor of nautical decay. The water here is generally shallow, and it's possible to traverse this area even at high tide, but footing is extremely treacherous and there are a number of difficult to spot pitfalls where the ground suddenly drops away into deep water. The dim light and ample cover may make it worth the risk to venture here, though.

"Fuck you!" Freya's voice had amped up in volume to a full-on shout and she had leapt to her feet as soon as Pippa tried to deflect what had happened onto her. "At least me and Fisher fucking tried to help! Unlike you, who didn't even want her here to begin with." Freya couldn't stand Pippa's attitude and there was no way in hell she was going to let the girl criticise her.

As they stood there Freya's eyes traveled down to the musket—her musket—that Pippa had grabbed at some point. So it turned out the bitch was trying to cover for herself while all she had done was just grab her weapon. Freya's respect for Pippa was rapidly dropping.

Lena's death was avoidable, they could have helped her more than they had. Freya believed that. But they'd failed, and while she and Fisher had tried to help save their classmate from falling Pippa had instead taken the opportunity to take Freya's weapon.

"Give me my gun back." Her voice was lower, but the words still came out as a snarl.

Fisher was elsewhere. The yelling, the tension, and the ratcheted up aggression was all secondary to him; the only thing that he could see were his own hands. The last few moments replayed back in front of him, over and over again.

He had her arm. Freya had the other. He had called out; and then-

She was gone.

His fingers trembled as the blood ran through them, just as the blood had run out of her body as it had landed upon the docks below. It wasn't so far that he couldn't see the spray as the splinters had pierced her chest; hear the ragged death rattle emit itself her throat and then nothing but the sound of water on old wood.

Very quickly, the strength to hold his hands up left him, and they slumped down, resting on his thighs, his eyes still staring off into a place that no one else could see. Lena had died. Had it been his fault? Someone had asked, or was that the voice in the back of his head? It didn't matter. She was an unwanted guest, but you didn't kill your unwanted guests. You asked them politely to leave. That was the British thing to do. Americans killed their unwanted guests.

"We're all Americans, now," the words were barely a whisper, but they weren't for either of his companions. They were barely even for himself.

The wind kept on blowing.

Pippa remained in place and kept her face as neutral as possible, which was getting harder and harder with the amount of spit that was flying out of Freya's frothing mouth. She really was going to keep judging Pippa for being pragmatic and thinking about keeping as many people alive when one person was likely doomed. And then Freya had to be snippy about the fact that Pippa had made sure the gun was kept far away from the hole. They were risking their whole beings by trying to pull Lena out, so why risk the tools that could keep them alive further once that issue was resolved?

Pippa couldn't understand why Freya was so bitter about this, nor why Freya couldn't see her point of view. But there was no point in arguing with the mad girl, so Pippa could just nip this argument in the bud.

"Gladly," Pippa said, holding the rifle out for Freya to take while keeping a stern look on her face.

She didn't feel the need to dignify this any further. Freya could take the gun back. Pippa didn't need to make herself look tough with big words and big guns. She could show some of that British strength without such uncouth behavior.

She was brought back to a less volatile situation by noticing Fisher, who seemed to be taking this much harder than Pippa realized.

"No, we're not Americans," Pippa said as reassuringly as she could coming down from a spat. "We didn't murder Lena. If the Americans want to blame any of us for what happened, that's their discretion. That'll just confirm that Lena was even right about being misrepresented, and that'll mean the Americans feel the need to obfuscate in order to kill us all, which only furthers proof at how pathetic they are."

Pippa exhaled. They spent enough time here, and they should probably head out now that it was getting late.

"But we should probably move away from here regardless. Fisher, are you okay to leave now, or do you need a moment?"

Freya snatched the gun from Pippa's hand. Her eyes stayed on the other girls for an extra moment before she turned away. Saying she was sick of Pippa was an understatement. What little patience she had for the other girl had been completely worn away. The condescending, superior attitude, the way she spoke and her actions had all lead to Freya's dislike.

But despite all that, they were a group and Freya knew that they had a better chance of achieving anything if they all stuck together. She didn't need to like Pippa, but she had to work with her. That knowledge didn't help her mood any. In the meantime, it seemed to have got to Fisher as he said the dumbest most melodramatic shit Freya could have imagined.

"Don't start with that shit." She grunted as she strode past Fisher and back down the wharves.

That could get fucked and all.

Every time he shut his eyes, he saw Lena's body lying below the wharf. Broken and bloody; eyes empty, expression blank. When he opened them, all that he saw was proof of his own failure in his dirty hands.

Finally, he blinked and realized that people were talking to him. Who had said what? Freya had her gun back and was storming off in the other direction. Pippa seemed to be looking at him, expectantly. The wind in his mind died down for a moment as he put the pieces together, his body barely moving on autopilot. Slowly, he climbed to his feet. Did he need a moment? Absolutely, one hundred percent Fisher Darden needed a moment. Hell, he needed a lot more than just a moment. He probably needed an hour, or ten, or a hundred; a thousand hours to try and get the stain of Lena's corpse out of his mind.

"N-no, it's fine. Let's go."

His voice sounded as hollow as he felt. He didn't even pick up on why Freya had snarled at him. She was always snarling at everyone. Fisher couldn't blame her. This was a snarly kind of day.

He wished he felt that kind of snarl; all he felt now was emptiness.

Pippa barely flinched as Freya took the rifle back from her. Freya could be mad at her all she wanted, but Pippa still knew she was right. It was a precarious runaway-trolley situation, and they had made the choice that mattered the most for the most people. Lena was a dead woman walking since she was now a wanted killer, and while Pippa could assume there was potentially some relief that Calista had been avenged by forces of nature that wanted her killer to plummet to her death, it now all depended on what the group would do next, and how the Americans responded to this situation.

Freya was already heading out, and it looked like Fisher was ready to go to.

"Alright. Let's find shelter."

Pippa took out the parachute knife and kept it by her side. This recent experience taught her quite a bit about her allies. Sure enough, Freya and Fisher were both still potential liabilities, Freya with her temper and Fisher with his fragility. That meant Pippa would now have to work extra hard to ensure there was some stability in their group. If not, Pippa would have to soon find the moment where it was clear she'd be better off on her own.

As Pippa walked away, she took a look back at the abyss Lena fell into. Sure, it was easy to write off Lena's death as karma for committing murder, and maybe some would judge Pippa harshly for not helping her, but Pippa could see that hole taking up more of the wharf, and all of them now in the grave with Lena. Pippa closed her eyes and nodded towards the hole.

"Farewell," she said.

She then turned and followed Freya and Fisher. This would be the first death they'd encounter in this place, and they couldn't dwell on it for long. That's not what would get them out of here.
