Whatcha Gonna Do

[Open]

The forests and tropical air suddenly gives way to the cold of the frozen north thanks to snow machine which can be heard chugging away for miles. Snow on all sides, there is a small abandoned lodge, a rental booth, and a ski lift leading up a large mountain. The ski lift is non-operational, the motor obviously purposely destroyed. The only way up is a small railed path, slick with ice and snow.

"This is Peter, and that's Kathy, and the guy with the gun is Tim. He's the pit bull we keep around to scare off players."

Okay. That was normal, right? Yeah, if Lynn had a bodyguard she could drag around, she'd be doing it too. He wasn't the biggest guy in the world, in fact he was shorter than her, but he had a gun and in fact that made him way better than a giant fucking linebacker dude. She'd take a guy with a gun any day, not that she was particularly fond of this kid who was so fond of waving a gun at her. His little mini rant about this being Survival of the Fittest blahblahblah okay, whatever, she was glad he was going on some adventure thing elsewhere. With...Kathy, her name was? She looked weirdly familiar. From her school, maybe, no one she really talked to...whatever.

The other two...Renee of the rich-girl-name and this boy, Peter, who seemed...nice. He'd held out his hand to her, that was nice, and unexpected, and she felt herself blush as she took it, stepping forward. Hoping he wouldn't notice. That was a great way to introduce yourself to a new group of people, yeah, blushing like an idiot. Great.

"I...yeah, hi," Lynn said awkwardly. "I'm Lynn, I...guess you already knew that? Somehow?"

Good job not being even slightly weird.

"Uh, yeah, so, I'm just kinda...chilling on my own for now. Grey team, you know, but I'm not gonna...not gonna hurt any of you, I'm just not really good at being on my own..."

And now you sound clingy. Awesome first impression.

Just great. Loose Cannon Timothy was apparently going down to the lodge, taking Kathy with him. Renée had pretty much no confidence in Timothy's ability to interact with Kathy without driving her out of the group entirely, given his rather unfortunate interaction style. More than that, if there was someone else at the lodge, there was a decent chance Timothy would gun them down in cold blood for blinking at him wrong. That would be a disaster. It was really getting on Renée's nerves, having to deal with his nonsense. They needed to be able to trust each other, to count on each other, to put their lives in each other's hands.

She sighed.

At least Peter was doing wonders for them, offering his hand and welcoming Lynn. He was definitely the one Renée trusted the most. He was a good guy, a genuinely good person. Maybe he'd be a hero.

Lynn asked how they knew her name.

"Kathy recognized you from school," Renée said, gesturing to the girl. "You're welcome to join up with us. We're trying to get everyone out of here. And I think we're going to head over to the shelter. You can come along if you want. The more the merrier."

That said, Renée started after Timothy. She wasn't going to let him too far out of her sight.

She was babysitting her own teammates. Wonderful.

Oh Christ, what was Tim saying now? Trying to justify pointing a gun at someone for no reason, he surmised. Peter watched as he stalked off towards the resort. He shook his head, and turned back to Lynn, giving her hand a gentle, but firm shake. He released her hand, letting his hand fall back to his side.

Renée talked about going after Tim. At first, Peter thought of protesting, but then he realized. What would Tim do to Kathy after they find the paper. If Peter and Renée weren't there, was Timothy really obliged to keep Kathy alive?

Peter gave a resigned sigh, looking at Renée's back, moving farther away, step by step. "Let's go, fearless leader." he joked, beginning to follow behind. Before going far, he stopped, looking over his shoulder at Lynn. He gave her a smile.

"Hope you can join us."

Anticlimactic, but Kathy was glad. No shooting. Timothy had just put down the gun, and they were- they were finally going to get her paper. Maybe this would all work out after all. A little bit of diplomacy, and no one gets shot.

She couldn't help but be somewhat grateful to him, even though he had just been pointing guns everywhere and stuff. After all, he had remembered her request, and was helping fulfill it.

And so she followed him, trudging in the snow, but with a sense of purpose now. Looking back once, she noticed the others starting to head in her direction - perhaps they had decided to head to the lodge as well?

The lodge! Its small wooden roof suddenly appeared through the flurry of snow, and she hurried towards it, ignoring the snow's futile resistance against her tennis shoes.

She reached the door first. Opening it a crack, she was greeted with a peculiar musty odor. She closed the door again; no use letting all the warmth out!

Kathy was feeling oddly enthusiastic, for once. It was absurd. From the time she'd been dropped onto this island, she'd gone through despair, hopelessness, fear, wariness, tension... She didn't even know which ones of those were actually true emotions. And now, perhaps, happiness, for once? Could she hope for that?

"Come on!" She waved at her companions, hoping they'd hurry up.

"You can't do this. You're not a gangster. You're just a scared kid. You're gonna die here and no one will care."

Those hopeless thoughts swirled through Tim's head. Every step he took reinforced the reality of the situation. That's what the others didn't get. They were too busy trying to stay alive that they didn't realize they were already dead. And Tim was the most dead out of all of them. After all, who would pass up the chance to take out the only viable threat in the group?

Kathy called for the others to join them. He hadn't even noticed her go right past him and reach the lodge first. He took one look at her face, and he smiled. There was at least one person on his side. Surely she understood he was only trying to stay alive like the others.

He reached the door, gun in hand. "Kat, it might be dangerous inside. I'll go first and let you know when the coast is clear. No sense dying from some surprise attack when you're so close to getting what you want."

He took a deep breath. Those words weren't so much for her as they were for him. He was scared, terrified really, but he needed to hear that. He needed to remind himself that he was close to getting out of this place for good.

"No closer than before. Never closer. That gun isn't protection. It's just makes you a target."

If he lived past the day, he was going to find the nearest camera-less corner, far away from everyone else, and have an 'evaluation' of his life so far.

And here came the turn. Timothy could almost taste his victory. Better luck next time everybody. Only a real pro is taking the prize. Queen or Jack, either one was good now.

But no Queen or Jack came. It was the 5 of Diamonds. He glanced around the table. Only two people seemed happy with the card. Renée and Peter. Surprise, surprise. Kathy folded. So did Lynn.

Tim blinked. He hadn't even realized Lynn was playing. He was too focused on the game to notice everyone else. But he needed to be. He needed to win. He had to.

Renée raised. Peter re-raised. Tim brought the brim of his hat lower. How was he going to win this one? There was no way that he could— He noticed his hand. He could still pull a straight.

Not as good as his other one, but there was a good chance he could still win. He called. It was okay. It was all okay. The river was coming up. All he needed was a four.

Betting ended shortly after as nobody raised again. Luck couldn't screw him over again, could it?

"Kathy recognized you from school."

Kathy...huh. Nope, doesn't ring a bell. Maybe we had a class together or something. Must be one of those kids who actually remembers everyone's friggin' name...or maybe I'm just famous. Heh.

"You're welcome to join up with us. We're trying to get everyone out of here. And I think we're going to head over to the shelter. You can come along if you want. The more the merrier."

That all sounded really, really good and nice and welcome. Shelter (long sleeves or not, this fake-ass snow was fucking cold). People who might be friends. She shouldn't make friends with them, really- they weren't on her team, they couldn't be her friends for long. That boy could shoot her any time he wanted and really it wouldn't be, shouldn't be much skin off their bones. But...other than the boy, they seemed nice, and anything was better than being alone again, and, uh...they didn't really seem like they'd shoot her, except maybe that boy, though he was the one with the gun, but...but...stop thinking about it or you'll end up saying no.

"Hope you can join us."

The cute stoner boy being all sweet to her, that was a plus, too. She followed, maybe just a bit tentatively as she worked out her options and realized yet again that she didn't really have any. Hey, whatever. There were worse things than having allies. And on the bright side, she never would've gotten to go to a ski lodge had she not wound up on SOTF-TV, right? Yeah...

They were almost at the door of the lodge, now. Lynn had tagged along. Good. It seemed they could make progress despite Timothy's actions. Renée was thankful for that. Organization was just going to get worse from here out. She estimated that there had been between fifty and seventy contestants in the studio. They had five people here. That meant they had, what, almost a tenth of the game concentrated in their little group? As they expanded, there were sure to be more clashes of personality and ego. It was Renée's job to hold them together, to keep them from each other's throats.

Thank goodness for Peter. Although, Renée didn't really like the way Lynn was acting towards him, coaxing him into catering to her ego.

No, that was unfair. Renée was letting the stress of this situation get the better of her. Peter was just a good guy. That was why she trusted him. There was no coercion here, just Peter being himself. His reliable, good self.

From a bit away, she heard Timothy offer to go first to scout for danger. Oh, no way. No way was he getting in there alone. Renée jogged to catch up with him, panting a bit, then smiled at him and said, "I've got your back."

Retrieving her razor from her pocket was less challenging this time, since she paid a little more attention. She flicked it open. God, she was in so much trouble if she actually had to fight anyone with a real weapon. That was something to worry about only if it came up, though. For the moment, she had to be responsible.

"Peter, if anything happens, get out and we'll meet up later. Everyone, if we're ever split up, danger zone or ambush or whatever, concentrate on saving yourselves. We'll regroup at the beach near the hotel. If it's a danger zone, take the hotel itself, but be careful."

Good. They had a plan of action. She glanced at Timothy again. She was a little nervous about this, yeah, but she was the one person he'd definitely not have any reason to shoot if he got her alone. She'd also be most likely to be able to restrain him if he got... overenthusiastic in his greetings of anyone already inside. Kathy, Lynn, and Peter would be fine out here. It'd just be for a moment.

((I think I'm seven minutes from inactivity. Sorry Egads, I think I better post. Shouldn't affect your position too much, anyway?))

Timothy was saying something, warning her about danger again.

Kathy could still feel that exhilarating sense of excitement, but... he was probably right. She was so close. She didn't want to die. Not yet. Well, not ever. But maybe that was too much to hope for right now, even being optimistic.

Was it getting late? Her eyelids felt a little heavy. She stifled a yawn. What kind of anticlimax would that be, falling asleep? It probably wasn't even nighttime yet...

Before she could respond, the rest of the group had caught up, and Renée offered to get Timothy's back, telling the group to wait outside while they scouted the premises.

"Okay," Kathy finally said. She shifted her grip on the cane, adopting a slightly more aggressive stance. "I'll guard the door, whack people with this cane - it should stun them for a bit!" Maybe it seemed kind of ridiculous. She wasn't very muscular, and the cane certainly didn't seem too lethal.

That was okay. She had no intent to kill.

Maybe if she kept whacking the assailant, they'd give up. Wishful thinking?

Well, assuming there was an assailant. Kathy hoped there wouldn't be.

((Apologies to Egads, but I no longer have the time to wait. Inactivity hits me next morning at a time I can't post. *Hands voucher for LSpology.*))

Timothy was unable to hide his discontent with Renée's offer to back him up. Hadn't she already done enough to ruin things for him? Apparently she didn't feel so. Before he headed in, he looked back at Kathy. "Kat, I'll see you in a few." He twisted the door knob, and made his way through. He stood in what seemed to be the lobby. There was a reception desk, a couple of chairs, standard lobby stuff. Nothing stood out in particular as a threat. He was fairly certain that there was no one inside.

At least, no one in the lobby. In the halls leading to the rooms and the other areas of the lodge, he couldn't be certain of. "Seems clear. Let me check the desk there for a sec." He made his way behind the desk, and placed the gun on the counter.

Time to see how trustworthy his supposed teammate was. Would she go for the gun? Or would she ignore it and take a look around herself? Decisions, decisions. Tim wanted to smile. "You want to test the limits of my allegiance? You want to know if you can trust me? Trust's a mutual thing Ren. And if you want to know how trustworthy I am, I want to know how trustworthy you are." He removed his fedora and placed it next to the gun. He had wanted to fix his hair since he woke up on this stupid show, but he needed to establish himself first. Now that he already had, he could tend to his appearance.

He ran one hand through his hair, trying to get it as even and level as possible before the hat went back on. With his other hand, he opened a drawer. It was mostly empty. A couple of erasers, staples, a staple remover, but no pens or pencils. "Right. Because that's too obvious for an improvised concealed weapon. Well played guys." He found what he was looking for in the next drawer; paper. This was sure to bring Kathy onto his side no matter how she wavered before.

He took out a few sheets and placed them on the counter as well. He looked at Renée. "Nice place huh? One of the perks of the show, I guess." It sure was a nice place, but to him all it was a fancy tomb. No matter where he went on the island, every fine structure would just make a pretty scene to die in. Still, he hoped he get to enjoy the comfort and luxury of the lodge for at least a few moments before their happy little family came apart at the seams.

Somehow, he doubted he would get to enjoy it.

Looking forward again, Peter saw the leg of the last person slip into the doorway. Fuck, he thought, I need to catch up. He jogged through the snow to the door, slipping inside. He didn't look back to see if Lynn was following him.

Peter gave a low whistle, stepping into the grandeur lobby. He knocked the snow off of his shoes, and took another step forward, looking around. He looked over, seeing Tim at the counter, the gun resting atop it. His vision lingered on him, seeing him place a few sheets of paper onto the surface, before looking around.

On the walls hung various paintings and mirrors. The smooth hardwood flooring was a deep colour of redwood. There were several large, cushioned chairs spread across the room, looking like cushy thrones. He placed his bag onto one, closest to an impressive fireplace. He noticed a set of stairs going up to a higher floor. He looked for a bit, before making a decision.

"I'm gonna check upstairs."

Upon saying that, he walked forward and begun to ascend.

Lynn returned to humming as she followed Peter and Renee towards the ski lodge. Not singing this time because okay, she could admit to herself that her singing was both totally obnoxious and really really off tune. And she couldn't think of any lyrics past "fuck everything" and that got old after a while and besides, it wasn't even all that accurate anymore because she had friends now! Ish. Sort of. Hey, it was enough to keep her from wanting to curse the whole world and everything in it, that meant something. Renee had rushed on ahead- the girl seemed really nice, Lynn felt the slightest bit guilty for mocking her name- leaving Lynn to follow Peter who- who had sped up himself, hurrying towards the lodge's entrance.

Jeez, what's the fuckin' hurry? I kind of like it out here, it's full of...not-people-who-are-trying-to-kill-me...

Whatever. She sped up a bit, sliding in just behind Peter, and holy shit this was easily the nicest digs she'd ever been in in her life. Not that that meant very much- the last place she'd slept in besides her own home was a Comfort Inn and she'd thought that shit was amazing. Couldn't hold a candle to this, though. This was just...damn. She'd been joking before, when she'd thought that this was the one upside to being on SOTF-TV, but hell...if she could stay here for a while, she might start to mean it.

"Everyone, if we're ever split up, danger zone or ambush or whatever, concentrate on saving yourselves. We'll regroup at the beach near the hotel. If it's a danger zone, take the hotel itself, but be careful."

Right. Plans. Lynn was never much good at plans. She'd have to listen, something she was never very good at. Honestly, it's a miracle I've gone this long without pissing these guys off. Guess fear for your life does a good job of keeping you from doing dumb shit. Hope it keeps working out that way. I'm really liking this not dying thing.

"I'm gonna check upstairs."

He- right. Peter. He was going to check upstairs. The cute, nice one. Was going to check upstairs. And here, downstairs, there was...Renee of the bourgeois name, who seemed nice enough and everything, and Kathy, same there, but neither of them were all that interesting, and- and Tim, the one who waved a gun at her. Yeah. Yeah, okay. This was totally a hard decision.

"I-I'll go with you!" Lynn called after Peter, mentally face-palming at the social awkwardness that was somehow hitting her now of all times. She looked over at Renee, who she had decided was the leader, at least in her eyes.

"Gotta split up, cover more ground, yeah? Ahahaha..."

Nice save, idiot.

She didn't waste any more time following Peter up the stairs, trying really hard not to look back.

Most of them came in after all. Alright, fine. It was safe. They weren't in danger. Renée could deal with that. They just had to use this place now, to fortify it or something, get it all set up so they could ride this out here. Then they could send groups out. Renée could go out and find the other people she could trust. The top of that list was Shawn Morrison. He'd do what was right, regardless of his team. That was good. He could be a hero.

Only, things weren't perfect in paradise. Timothy left his gun on the counter, which made Renée feel a bit reassured. Better than in his hand. Better still, in hers or Peter's, somewhere she could be sure it wouldn't be misused. She'd approach that later, once they had a more solid alliance. For now, she'd take what she could get.

"Yeah," she said, in response to Timothy's question. "Real pretty."

Peter declared that he was going to go check out the upstairs. Lynn decided to follow him. The girl had absolutely no subtlety, and Renée found herself hating Lynn for that, just a little. This was a serious situation. Life and death. Lynn had no business flirting or whatever it was she was doing. She should be focusing on staying alive, on helping the team. Jealousy didn't factor into this equation, not in the slightest. Besides, Peter was surely not the sort to fall for something like this.

Of course, Lynn could just be isolating him in order to strangle him or something. She didn't know him. She was from that other school. She'd acted weirdly this whole time, and Renée didn't really trust her yet. She was being overly cautious, and she knew it, but that was how you survived SOTF-TV. Yeah. She'd just go and make sure Peter was alright, and if they were kissing or something, well, no, they wouldn't be kissing or something. Peter wasn't like that.

"Maybe I should go back them up too," she said. Timothy was most trustworthy around Kathy. They'd been together at the start. They'd be fine. "I want to make sure we don't have anything to worry about. Plus, there might be something useful. I'd love to get my hands on a computer."

She knew computers pretty well, but wouldn't have half a clue how to use them for any sort of escape purposes. Having one would help, though, in case she met someone later who did.

The proucers always removed the computers. It was a foolish thought.

"Be right back."

She started up the stairs. It had only been a few minutes.

They had all gone in anyway. Kathy frowned slightly, then entered as well, closing the door gently behind her.

It was warm inside, a nice contrast from the biting cold of the ski slopes. Even if the snow was fake, she had to admit it sure felt like winter outside. She looked around. Where had all the others gone? There was just one other person standing in the lobby.

Timothy.

Her thoughts jumped a couple of steps. Had he killed them all? Doubtful - she didn't know why she was even considering it. They were allies. Renée was on Timothy's team. He wouldn't do something like that, anyway. She hoped.

The only other explanation was that the others probably had gone off to explore, and-

Then she saw the paper.

She would have smiled ear-to-ear if that were possible, but as it was her smile was possibly the largest it could have gotten. In the back of her mind, she marveled at how the absence of luxuries made everything so much more valuable and special. But she mostly wasn't thinking about that.

Because what Kathy was doing was tackling Timothy. Yeah, she could have found the paper herself, she knew that. And yeah, it was kind of embarrassing - Timothy probably didn't care to be hugged. The cane kind of got in the way, too. And who knows where Timothy put his gun; maybe it wasn't such a good idea to surprise him. She didn't really care that much. It was nice to have allies, people who remembered what you wanted and helped you achieve your goals. Maybe optimism wasn't a lost cause after all!

But she backed off a few steps just a few seconds after, the embarrassment finally getting to her. A simple thank you could have sufficed, she supposed.

"Heh." Kathy flashed him a sheepish smile. "I guess I just meant to say thanks. Um, where's everyone else?"

Tim could say one thing conclusively. Even if she were plotting to stab him in the back like his thoughts were telling him, Renée was one of the nicest and most patient people he'd met on SOTF. For the moment, he could move her from the 'watch carefully' category to the 'cautious alliance' category.

Pete headed upstairs, followed shortly by Lynn, and then by Ren herself. Tim couldn't help but imagine for a moment that somehow Pete or Lynn would bring up how to get rid of him or get his gun away from him. The paranoia was starting to kick in and that wasn't good.

All that accomplished was getting someone kil—

Suddenly he stumbled backwards as the small, blond, and in his opinion stunningly beautiful Kathy Clements tackle hugged him. His face flushed red, his mask of smug and calculating self-centerdness (at least some of it was just a mask) unable to hide his definite enjoyment of the situation at present. He'd never been good with the ladies, much as he tried to convince himself that he was. He'd barely even shook hands with any at best.

And now he was getting hugg—

And it was over as quickly as it happened. Kathy sheepishly apologized and expressed her thanks. Tim couldn't hide his disappointment. "No harm done. Just, if you're gonna do that then maybe give me a heads up next time so I can return the gesture." He smiled.

"Everyone else went upstairs. Guess they think we can handle ourselves down here." He smoothed out his suit, picked his hat back up, and put it on. Adjusting his sunglasses, he said, "They're not wrong you know. You and I make a great team. What I wouldn't give to have known a girl like you before ending up in this place." He chuckled, acutely aware of the fact that this was still SOTF.

"But hey, that's life. Anyway, I looked and there ain't any pens or pencils around here. No idea why they wouldn't so much as leave one in a drawer. If you want, we can look for one around the room. What do you say?"

Peter slid his hand up the banister, climbing the steps slowly. Cautiously. His eyes on the final step. Once he could see above it, he slowed almost to a stop. Seeing nobody in his immediate view, he continued to the top. Reaching the top, he took a few steps to the side, allowing the two girls to get up.

It wasn't so much a second floor, as a loft. There was a banister, and it overlooked the foyer. Looking up, Peter saw the chandelier, now closer. The light from outside played off the polished gold, twinkling. Hearing the steps of the two girls, he glanced down at them.

Lynn and Renée had followed him up. He was glad. While Tim hadn't done anything really bad, he still was a bit wary of them being near someone with a gun.

Especially Renée.

Okay wow why did he think that.

Regardless, he couldn't help watching her. After a few heartbeats, we quickly averted his eyes, a slow warmth creeping over his cheeks. He spun around to look again onto the second floor.

It appeared to be where the bedrooms were. Doors lined the walls at regular intervals. He stepped towards the closest one. 201. He wrapped his hand around the knob and
opened the door into his room. Inside, it was the usual sight. Boxers and jeans strewn on the floor, books and magazines piled onto his bedside table. His book case a disorganized mess. Oddly enough, however, there were two girls in his room, one on his bed reading a magazine and another poking around in his dresser. "I see mom let you two in. Are you done playing CSI in my private area now?"

Jeanette, the girl searching the contents of his top dresser drawer, spoke without looking up, "There are criminals to apprehend. With enough evidence we can put this bastard away."

There was a giggle from April, the girl reading the Mad magazine from 2001 on his bed, "Wow, playa. You really still read Mad?"

Peter cleared his throat, "It's really funny when you're baked, okay?"

"Aha!" Jeanette exclaimed, pulling out a green ceramic pipe from Peter's drawer. She examined it closely, "Drug paraphernalia. This could get you 25 to life, kid."

"No it wouldn't," Peter sighed as he walked up and snatched the pipe from her hands, "and I think you may be mistaken regarding the severity of being found with a pipe."

Jeanette gave a big pout, "Sometimes I wonder why we hang out with you, Pete."

April looked up, "Because he's super easy to make fun of."

"Love you too, guys," Peter said, "And what have we got planned today?"

April placed the magazine on her lap, "How about we do no
thing in here." Peter said, closing the door on the empty bedroom.
