What is the situation with athletic competitions? Are people allowed to use their gift when doing them or is that banned? If the latter, would people have to confirm what their gift is before the competing, or could they just lie and say it's something else?

Excellent question! For any given professional sport, there are two existing leagues: one where powers are permitted, and one where they are not, with many professionals participating in both leagues. When it comes to high school sports, only the non-powered leagues exist, as the public education system is still very antiquated.

Lying about one's Gift in this context is possible, but a lie like that wouldn't last very long if at all (it'd be too easy to expose from testimony from friends/family or an internal investigation with access to government records).

Yes (with no specific rulings), but just like in the real world, the disability system in the United States is terribly inadequate.

As for details about The Emergence: literally nobody knows. Not even the most powerful governments on the planet know why it happened or how. Scientists have been trying to figure out how Gifts work and reverse engineer their origin ever since The Emergence, to no real luck besides the fact that they seem to be vaguely related to cognition (since nervous system depressants affect them) and (more rarely) genetics. There are a lot of guesses flying about, but not a single one of them has a shred of evidence behind it. Which means: feel free to have your character make up whatever crackpot theory they want!

No, Gifts are totally random in where they emerge, who gets them, and what they do. No particular region has a higher concentration of Gifts pertaining to their culture and history than any other, and they are all just as likely to have Gifts that relate more to the mythos of other cultures than their own.

Yes, though it's rare. They'd be akin to real-life, fatal genetic diseases.

I can't answer this for any specific denomination of any given religion, because I am an atheist and do not think I would be able to respectfully provide answers. However, in general, there were a very wide range of reactions, some seeing it as a sign of the end times and some seeing it as gifts from a higher power. Over time, the fact that people had superpowers now was normalized, and eventually totally accepted by the overwhelming majority.

If a student has a Gift that could injure themselves or others during gym class, would they get a waiver for that class or would they expect to do other, lighter exercises?
