Mortal Kombat

Private Lobby

The upper deck of the ferry is open to the air, and offerings direct access to the nearby house boat via a particularly precarious metal gangplank that shifts with the rocking waves. The upper deck has markedly less cover than the lower; aside from the stairwells offering the opportunity to duck down, it's all benches and railings.

Akeno was pushing through, knocking Fisk aside first, but the whole thing was a waste, James knew. Was she hoping to accomplish here? Revenge, probably. Like with Ivan, a force channelled by their recklessness, by their eagerness to leap into the game.

With her seemingly distracted in dealing with Fisk, James could’ve stepped forward and attempted to stab her, ending things right there. There was still a chance, though. She was far outnumbered and had seen firsthand what could happen in that situation.

“Akeno, please.” Was all he said, holding the shiv in front of him and rooting himself firmly in front of Verity. He wasn’t just going to let her take him down, and if she did come at him or Verity, he’d try to stop her, but he still hoped there was a way to get out of this.

Of course, Calla and Jasper had already proven such hopes false, hadn’t they?

“Shut up.”

Akeno reached out and grabbed James by the wrist, taking the outstretched hand holding the shiv and pulling him off balance as she pulled herself forward. She wasn’t interested in hearing the pleas of someone who wouldn’t offer her the same courtesy should she lose this fight; Fisk had already threatened her with crucifixion and other tortures, there was no stepping back from that, no negotiation that could be made with madmen and murderers.

Fuck them for even trying to back out of this when they’d started it.

She moved around James, ignoring him and heading straight for Verity instead. As expected the other girl had the gun and something else in the other hand, in the middle of reloading. Her foot snapped out, aiming for the hand holding the gun and hoping to knock the weapon away or interrupt what Verity was doing at the very least.

For a moment, Verity had had it. The other two had lasted long enough. The couple of seconds needed to reload the gun had gone past and the second clip was right about to slide in and-

And then a foot came out from behind her. Hit her hand. Caused the gun to fling out and slide and clatter against the floor, near the railing. Near the edge.

Didn’t need to think. She moved. Tried to get to the gun before Akeno did.

The gun was thrown across the upper deck and Akeno let herself breathe for a brief moment.

It was a minor victory all things considered, only the most immediate of the multiple threats dealt with and even then not permanently. It was still a relief, but she couldn’t relax an inch yet. A quick look over her shoulder showed her that the other two weren’t coming after her just yet, she had some breathing room for the moment; she would use it to deal with Verity. Not kill her, she didn’t have enough time for that, but hurt her enough she was out of the fight.

She looked back and saw that Verity was already running for the gun.

Akeno ran after her.

In a sprint Akeno was probably the faster of them, but the other girl had a head start; there was no way to get the pistol before Verity did, not when she was already so close to it. No matter; her goal wasn’t to get the gun, just stop them from shooting her. Verity’s hand reached for the gun, fingers outstretched ahead of her. She touched the metal, but before she could pick it up Akeno’s foot came down on the weapon. Her foot slid back, dragging the gun with it as Akeno threw it away from both of them.

That was too close.

Clank clank clank clank-

"Fucking cuuunnnt!"

Fisk was back on his feet again after Akeno turned his back on him. She thought a kick to the knee would be all that it takes to take him out? Fuck no, he's been in longer fights, he can handle a couple hits. She thinks all that training means something, that she can just thrash everyone because someone taught her some fancy kicks and throws? No, she wasn't going to win. The Respects will whittle her down, one by one. She couldn't take all of them. She was going to die tired.

Her refusal to accept that made Fisk angry. Everyone who had refused had made him angry, to be honest. That they alone, were worth more than the collective of The Respects? That they deserved it more than the people who'd worked together and lifted each other up for the sake of each other, so that some random shitbird could go home instead? Fuck no. Fuck that. You selfish bastards aren't even worth one tenth of a single Respect, and you think you could take us all, that you matter more, that you want to fight back, that you want to refuse what is simply and objectively the right course of action.

Accept what's coming, this will hurt less if you do. That you think you could take us on and get away with it is blasphemy enough, let alone coward scum like Ivan picking away at them, vultures whom are already dead futilely picking away because they can't accept the inevitability that Fisk was right and his cause was the only worthy one because it was a cause greater than himself, that these fucking profligates think that they alone are worth more, that their meager lonely shit little lives is worth more was an insult upon society and greater decency.

Very well. The only language they understand is violence, and violence they will get. Their bodies will be hung up as warnings, and their friend's bodies, and anyone whom assists them too. Give up and die with dignity, or fight and die like pigs in a slaughter house, it should be an easy choice. They choose the latter every single time.

Fucking idiots. Stupid bastards. Stupid Fucking Bastards.

Another flurry of blows found their mark in Akeno. She will be beaten down, she will be crushed underneath Fisk's heel, underneath the weight of the Respects. She will suffer, and then she will die, and she will serve as a warning to all who oppose, to Ivan, to Rhonda, to that fat little shit Eric, to anyone who'd dare harm one of his friends' chances again in a piss poor excuse for self-preservation.

Fisk swung, and swung, and swung.

"I will kill you! Fucking bitch! Fucking decimate you! Fucking obliterate you!"

Awareness.

It was important to maintain your awareness in fights, especially when you were outnumbered and especially when people were waving dangerous weapons around. Where was Verity, where was Fisk, where was James? What are they doing, does she need to stop them, can she stop them? It was exhausting to maintain that level of awareness but even if she tried she couldn’t see everything, couldn’t even keep track of the things she did see. Sooner or later she would miss something important and it would get her killed. Akeno had already almost let Verity get her hands on a loaded gun twice because she was trying to keep an eye on everything.

She didn’t hear the clanking footsteps approaching over the sound of blood pounding in her ears until it was too late. Akeno turned around in time for the hook hit her in the face and things didn’t get much better from there.

Not the hook tip itself, thankfully; Fisk was still fighting mad and he didn’t seem to care which part of the weapon he hit her with so long as he hit her. She brought her arms up to the block the next few swings, swallowing the blood in her mouth as she adjusted to what was happening. Fisk swung the hook over and over like a bat, trying to beat her down instead of getting clever or using the weapon as it was supposed to be used. Little comfort when her arms were already going to be black and blue by the end of this, but things could be a lot worse.

Akeno waited until after the next swing, when Fisk was pulling the weapon back, before reaching out and grabbing hold of the weapon with one hand. Her other arm she brought down on the weapon itself, wrenching the haft of it out of Fisk’s hands and leaving Akeno in possession of it.

She dropped it immediately.

Fisk reacted to losing his only weapon by throwing repeated punches at her instead, hardly slowing down at all, but now that both of them were unarmed they were in the kind of fight Akeno was a lot more confident with. The first punch she dodged by leaning to the side and letting the blow pass her by, the second she avoided by swiping an arm in front of herself and parrying the punch aside before wrapping a hand around his wrist. Akeno held the arm in place as she drove her opposite forearm in Fisk’s elbow, using her hips and twisting her waist to put as much force behind it as possible. She’d only ever done this as part of a larger kata, but the intention was to snap her opponents arm at the elbow.

There was no snap. Either Akeno had gotten the angle wrong or Fisk’s arm was turned the wrong way, but instead of breaking the elbow bent; no snap, only a faint pop as Fisk’s arm was wrenched downwards.

Akeno let go of Fisk and stepped away, spitting blood from her split lip on the floor.

The pop was a lot louder from Fisk’s point of view. Though, to him it was more of a ‘clunk’ if anything. It was a familiar sound connected to a familiar sensation connected to an unfortunate implication-

He dropped to his knees instantly, intending to scream as only a gasp or a wheeze could make it out.

His shoulder. Bitch dislocated his fucking shoulder!

The pain wracked his body as what felt like thousands of nerves were pinched and stretched before getting tied in a knot, as his right arm hung uselessly at his side.

“Ack! Hnng,hnng,gnnk!”

He fell to his side, left arm grasping at his right shoulder as he gasped and groaned on the ground. He’s had a lot of prior incidents involving his arm since the car accident. From falling the wrong way, picking up something too heavy with one arm, or even overexerting himself on pull-ups, he was very, very used to his arm coming out of it’s socket. Still hurts just as bad as the first time it’s happened though.

Only thing that hurts worse is putting it back in.

He began to drag himself forward by his good arm, gasping and screaming the whole while. “Gaaaah! Ffff-“ This would be a perfect opportunity for someone to help, maybe James could find his nuts or something! Maybe someone could help.

Maybe Akeno could just stomp his head in...

“Fff-Fuuu-huuuck!”

((Sofia Kowalski continues from disappointingly a 'luckier' fish))

Just as Sofia started her ascend up the stairwell, she heard Fisk spewing out a list of profanities.

By the time she reached the halfway-point, she heard a scream and a weird pop.

And then she reached the upper deck and got the visuals.

James was fine. He was standing around awkwardly, apparently having been pushed aside, but he was fine.

Verity was fine. She was standing near the reling and fumbling with something.

Fisk was... not fine. He was crawling across the ground, one of his arms hanging limply. And above him, ready to attack, towered...

Akeno.

Hearing Sofia and Vasily coming up, the girl turned into their direction. Their eyes met.

Sofia knew not much about fighting or martial arts. But she believed to see a fire burning behind Akeno's eyes. And at the same moment, despite no evidence to back it up, she came to a conclusion: Her years of gymnastics, the fact Akeno was already wounded and Sofia's weapon meant nothing against this opponent. If she allowed herself to be attacked right now, Akeno would wipe the floor with her.

For two long seconds, Sofia stood still like a frightened animal in front of a predator. But then she realized that for some reason, Akeno hadn't moved either. Instead, her look showed... shock and concern?

It took her only a fraction of a second until she remembered that she was wearing blood-splattered clothing while holding a similarly red shiv.

It was her best shot at getting herself and the others out without more injuries.

Sofia raised the shiv and pointed it in Akeno's direction. "You see right. I killed your friend. And if you don't piss off, you will be next!" She proclaimed, trying to look as threatening as possible.

James was sent tumbling to the ground when Akeno knocked him aside and there he remained. He’d once again been made a fool of for not taking action when it became necessary.

But what did that mean? That he should’ve joined the others in trying to kill Akeno in a fight that Fisk or Vasily or maybe even Verity had almost certainly started? He understood that killing was a necessary part of the game, but there had to be a better way of dealing with that. And yet, attempts at trying a better way had just left him circling around and around.

Maybe that wasn’t a problem of the game, but of the company he kept. The Respects were mostly all fans of the show, which meant that they were definitely more informed than him when it came to SOTF, but maybe that’s why they could get too eager. That rift between him and the others was why it had meant so much to have Sofia around.

Maybe the problem was just him.

The fight continued to rage without him, primarily between Fisk and Akeno, it seemed. James had his I do elsewhere until he heard some sort of pained cry from Fisk which snapped his attention back.

With that, James finally rose to his feet, shiv at the ready. He was going to do… something. He wasn’t sure yet, but he knew he couldn’t let Fisk get killed while he just lay around.

Luckily, backup arrived in the form of Sofia and Vasily finally coming up from below. He smiled at Sofia in spite of the situation, glad to have her around.

And then she said she killed Akeno’s friend on the lower deck, and his expression fell.

“What?” He whispered, though she almost certainly didn’t hear.

There was a reason the other gun had stayed in Verity’s bag all game.

Mostly because it wasn’t as useful. Back then before the game when she’d holed herself up in that ship cabin, she’d taken some time to look through the specifics of what guns she’d been given and kinda immediately realized that the gun she’d been given wasn’t exactly as good as the one she’d taken from Timothy. A gun that was only accurate underwater was a gun that was never going to hit a target — she’d been underwater once already, it wasn’t a place she wanted to try and shoot people from. When Timothy’s gun had come out during the first fight in the banquet hall, it’d been the gun that… for better or worse, had helped the fight go more her way. Had been the gun she’d exclusively used up until now. Had become the weapon she was likely defined by.

Maybe there was something in that. Timothy’s gun. She’d used it for so long that maybe she was the only one who really remembered that it wasn’t hers. That she’d stolen it before pushing its original owner to his death. That there was a whole scene before this season started where she woke up and immediately decided to murder someone.

Maybe there was something in that.

But that was for later, because right in that moment when Akeno had kicked Timothy’s gun away, Verity had figured a better idea than trying to run for it again. She went down into her bag. Pulled the other gun out as Sofia and Vasily entered the room. Pointed it at Akeno as Vasily pointed his own gun.

It wouldn’t hit shit unless the both of them were underwater, but that was fine. What Akeno didn’t know wouldn’t hurt her.

Lucille was dead.

Akeno knew before the girl said it, before she saw the blood even; as soon as she saw that it wasn’t Lucille coming up those stairs she knew it. It should have shocked her, but it didn’t. It should have made her angry, especially when the girl, the girl who was scared stiff while trying to look intimidating, tried to threaten her; but it didn’t. She should have despaired, like she had with Jasper but… nothing. Akeno could only think one thing when Sofia came up those stairs.

“I knew it.”

Slowly, so as not to provoke anyone, Akeno raised her arms above her head. There was no use trying to fight now, not when Vasily had a loaded gun pointed at her, not when it was five of them against her one; although, counting Fisk as one right now was generous. A few moments more and she could have taken Jasper’s hook and ripped out his throat with it, but as nice as that vindictive though was, given the current situation, it was probably for the best that she hadn’t gotten that chance; they probably wouldn’t be as willing to let her go if she was covered in their friends blood.

She understood the feeling.

“Okay, I’ll leave.” A part of her was surprised they hadn’t just shot her already, but she wasn’t about to tempt fate by sticking around any longer than necessary; if they wanted to let her go then she would let them. She began to back away from Fisk’s prone form, walking towards the staircase on the opposite side of the ferry. There were a few moments of awkward not-quite-silence, where the only sound was Fisk’s continued screams. Akeno was afraid to break the spell, by saying something, and even if she wasn’t there wasn’t anything she wanted to say to these people.

Instead she just stared at them; mostly at Vasily and Sofia, but also at the people she was just fighting. James and Verity were still a part of this, even if Fisk was no longer a threat, and while James also staring towards Vasily and Sofia, Verity had pulled out another damn gun and was point it at her as well. Not the same one as before though, which meant she had probably taken it from whomever she killed on her team.

Her bag, unfortunately, was nowhere to be seen. It was still somewhere on the upper deck somewhere, but she’d lost track of it after throwing it at James. It would be left behind.

Once she was far away enough from Fisk, Akeno broke in a run for the stairs. She didn’t want to take the risk that they were just waiting until she was far enough away from their friend that they wouldn’t hit him before shooting her; or the more likely scenario that Fisk composed himself enough to tell them to kill her.

She was gone before he had the chance.

Fisk rolled to his back as Sofia said what she needed to. He looked and saw her arm covered in blood and knew right away she wasn’t kidding. Fisk felt a pained laugh escape.

He wanted so very very badly to call Akeno out. I told you so. Shoulda fucked off. Another friend you got killed by your stupidity. It just reinforced why he hated her. All that talent could’ve been used for something greater, but it was all wasted on some selfish idiot and her gaggle of meat shields.

He laughed more openly, despite the pain. Verity has a new gun, Vas has his old gun. Oh this would be a perfect firing squad were he not worried a stray round or ten would get him. Then his arm would be the least of his problems. He continued to crawl back with his elbow and feet. Make distance, give them the opening.

Akeno said she was done and started leaving herself. Fisk laid his head back onto the ground. He had faith in his team, they knew what they gotta do. Closed his eyes, listened to the footsteps, waited for the gunshots.

Waited for the gunshots.

Waiting for the gunshots.

Waiting...

“Oh for fucks sake do we need another Ivan?!”

His good arm grasped the railing to stand up.

“Light that bitch up!” He pointed at the retreating figure. The same retreating figure that was basically gone.

“Gah fuck it whatever, she’ll probably feed us another one of her friends anyways...” He looked to Sofia and Vasily. “Are you guys okay? Lucille didn’t hurt any of you, did she?” He looked to James and Verity. “You guys alright?”

Now was the time for assessment, to make sure nobody else in the Respects were any more hurt than he was. Didn’t need to lose anyone else today. When he took note that nobody was too worse for wear, he relaxed a bit. Akeno was long gone, and there were no use crying over spilled milk.

“I... I appreciated the cover fire by the way.”

He pulled his shiv out of his belt loop. Flipped it over, pointed the handle to Verity to take. “Here. You earned it. You could have ditched us or let Akeno waste me, but you stayed. You have my apologies that we started on the wrong foot, and my condolences for Keegan, but you’ve proved you’re one of us, and all that it implies.”

“You too Sofia. James was right about you.”

Y’know, every time Fisk opened his mouth, Verity had conditioned herself to know that whatever came out was going to be targeted at her. The precursor of him telling the group to shoot Akeno had been aired out, and now that she’d managed to escape he was going to make her the scapegoat. Make her not firing the sole reason why they hadn’t managed to kill her. It wouldn’t matter that the shot had a better chance of going wild and hitting one of them. Didn’t matter that there were only six rockets (not even ‘bullets’) in the gun. Didn’t matter that she’d fucking saved his hide earlier. Any attempt to explain herself would not be heard. Any attempt to be patient and tell Fisk why exactly she hadn’t shot her would just result in him going into her more. She was the runt of the litter. Even Sofia was more well liked than her. She just had to accept her lot and keep on going with what really mattered.

But then Fisk asked her whether she was alright.

“Yeah, I-”

And then he took a shiv out of his pocket and before she could really catch up she’d grabbed the handle and taken it from him.

“Thanks.”

And now that meant she was a Respect. Capital R. With all the Responsibility that that involved and implied.

(congrats)

(you did it)

(you’re one of them now)

“Hold on.”

She went to where Akeno had flung Timothy’s gun. Picked it up. She went to where Akeno had flung the clip she was trying to insert. Picked that up, too. Put it in the gun. Finally fucking reloaded it. Looked at Fisk. The rest of the group. James. Fisk.

“I’m fine, I think. She mostly just, um, punched me up a bit here,” she said, pointing at her chest. She took a step towards the stairs. “I’m going to follow. Try and see if she’s heading anywhere. I’ll… stay as far away from her as I can, but…”

Took another step towards the stairs. Kept looking at the group.

“But, um, yeah.”

Took a step. Was right at the stairs. If she kept going she’d go out of sight.

“I’ll try and make it back here before sundown. If I don’t and, um, this gets made a danger zone or you guys leave or something, I’ll be at the pool. I’ll try to start guarding it.”

One step down. Two steps down. She’d turned around, by this point. Started leaving sight.

“I’ll, um, see you all soon.”

After Akeno had finally left, Fisk asked if they’d wanted to create another Ivan, as if the failing there had been in their inability to kill Akeno, instead of in creating another pointless fight and welcoming the rage that came from another kill, another victim that someone out there would want revenge for.

Another death…

James had never taken his eyes off of Sofia since she arrived on the upper deck, declaring that she’d killed Akeno’s friend. Fisk had congratulated her for that, saying that James had been right about her. He’d brought her into this mess after all.

His stomach was about to turn itself inside out, tied up in knots as James found himself feeling dumber than anything else in the past three days on this show. Because this time it was all accompanied by an overwhelming sense of shame that washed over his whole being.

Fisk, Vasily, he didn’t acknowledge them as he stepped closer to Sofia.

“You- So, you did kill someone down there? Like, for real?” James asked, his voice quiet, but steady, his eyes meeting her own.
