Land of Milk and Honey

Open, around 10 am

The nicest quarters in the cruise ship, these rooms are designated "Captain's Quarters" by a plaque outside, though it's unclear whether the actual captain of the vessel took possession of them or whether they instead were used as a VIP suite. The rooms here include a bedroom with a king-sized bed (clean and recently made), a sitting room with a widescreen television and a bookcase (the former nonfunctional, the latter filled with SOTF paraphernalia and writings), a bathroom with a tub and steam shower, and a small personal kitchen. Accessible from the corridors, the suite also opens to a small balcony, which offers direct access to the decks.

“A lot of ways- he could’ve hit you in self defense, or by accident, or someone else hit you. You could have fallen or bumped into something. You could’ve-”

He moved.

Her voice died off and she shrunk into herself even more.

People change when they’re casted.

Gregory changed.

Leah wanted to change, too.

Fight, flight, fawn, freeze- She’s never fought before.

She still hasn’t.

A nervous chuckle rang through the air instead of a continued sentence.

And, then:

''Jewel, is this guy safe to be around?''

The voice from Leah's collar is a quiet whisper, quick and clear, audible only to her:

"Definitely not."

She looked up again

Don't try anything stupid.

Her fist clenched.

She was reminded of the metal in her bag.

She coulda done anything else. Fight, try and stab him with her arrow things, run away; the door was right there, for god's sake! Do anything to preserve her own life other than what, just sit there, nervously giggling like a deer in the headlights? Cory had at least tried to fight back, punched him in the nose, and although he was an utter pussy and Gregory was gonna kill him, he could kind of... respect him for that. He at least had enough rattling around up there to try and keep himself alive.

Leah, meanwhile? She just froze. Mumbled something - he could see her lips moving - and frankly, it just reinforced that idea in his head that she was sent here to pump up the numbers. You can't have everyone just be some epic player dude, you had to have the nerds, the geeks, the people who would die if you so much as looked at them.

Gotta have someone who needs to die, right?

He took another step towards her.

Then another.

And then, Gregory picked up speed, rushing towards her, and at the last second he stopped. She flinched, just a little. It was like that time he kept making fun of that kid back in elementary school and at some point, if Gregory even meant to move towards him he'd kinda flinch and at the time he found that funny. It was still kinda funny now.

"Run! C'mon, run! Run, little filler, run!" He muttered in a sing-song voice, leaning down.

He wrapped his hands around her throat.

And started squeezing.

There was a mocking tune, an explosion against her face and hands around her neck. The book clattered to the floor.

She couldn't breathe.

Leah pushed her hands against Gregory's torso- She was below him. She didn't know what she was doing. It was all adrenaline and panic in her brain.

She couldn't breathe.

There were hands around her neck and she couldn't breathe. She didn't know what to do.

Bony fingers clawed against tanner ones. Bigger hands on smaller hands on her windpipe.

Scratching. Digging small red marks into the skin.

A warm, wet gasp erupted from her throat.

Her legs kicked in the air. Her back dug into the floor.

Hypercapnic alarm response.

She didn't want to die yet.

Please. Get those hands off of me.

Please.

Stop that.

Why'd you do that?

I thought I knew you.

Tears flew from her eyes. She didn't want to become another Giselle.

Her face was getting red.

Maybe she'll get buried with flowers when the next person finds her.

She still couldn't breathe.

Her hands left her own throat and pushed feebly at the boy's neck.

She's got a thumb with a rough nail, ready to dig in.

(We can destroy each other together.)

She was crying and gasping and kicking and god, it was just so... intoxicating to have someone like this beneath him, kicking, squirming, dying. Was that the right word? Maybe exhilarating was the right word. Maybe he'd kill Cory like this. Adrenaline was running through his body like oil through an engine and god, it felt good. One. One kill. Sorry Leah, sorry Leah's mom and dad, but your daughter was filler who couldn't fight back to save her life, quite literally. And now she would be lying dead on the floor of a captain's quarters on a cruise ship, somewhere out in the Atlantic. Or Pacific. Wherever the hell they were.

He wondered, idly, if Sammy was watching right now, or if he was talking to the bees with that deep gruff voice of his. Would he be proud to see Gregory getting his first kill? Heh, old man'd probably be criticising him like a backseat driver. He didn't strangle her right, he coulda stabbed her - and yeah he should stab her, but where's the fun in that? Being strangled to death, the kicking, the struggling, that's what the audience wanted to see. Brutalilty, not just someone dying.

Her hands pushed at his neck, feebly, hoping that they'd save her from him. But the only thing that could save her now was pulling an arrow out of her bag - actually, wait, she could do that. Using his elbow, he kind of hit the bag until it fell off her shoulder, and then kicked it out into the corridor.

There was nothing now. Nothing that could save her. She may as well stop strugglin-

A sudden, digging pain into his neck. He let out a little hiss, and his grasp weakened just a little. What the hell was that? Her nail?

Gregory's grip loosened

It worked?

It worked.

She knew what to do now.

Hypercapnic alarm response.

Her hands sought Gregory's windpipe just like how he wrapped his hands around her's. One hand, and then another.

Get the fuck away from me.

Her fingers arched, and then dug in, weakly. She coughed and sputtered and flailed, but in the end she was the one sunking her claws into him.

Ow! Ow, fuck! He had nearly got it but this bitch had dug her nails into his neck and wouldn't stop. And just like him, she was trying to choke him as well. Two could play at that game, he supposed. He should have just knifed her when he had the chance, but now she's got her hands around his neck, and she was squeezing just as much as he was. It wasn't a nice feeling, but it didn't matter if she felt that way, felt how terrible it was to be choked to death because she was just filler.

No. He was going to do this. He was going to win. This was a game, a game where they both had their hands wrapped around each other and only one of them would be coming out of this with their life. And it wasn't going to be Leah because she had started out at a disadvantage.

Gregory was certain that it was going to be him. One of many. His first one. His first kill. Her fingers were digging in. Digging into his windpipe. It hurt. It hurt a lot.

He let go of her throat, only to pull his arm back and plant his fist straight into her face. Choking wasn't going to work. He needed the knife.

Gregory’s hands left her neck, and she took a deep gasp, enough to make her lungs hurt.

As soon as relief arrived, he threw a punch into her face.

She tasted blood.

An eye for an eye. A hand for a hand. A hit for a hit.

Leah didn’t know what she was doing, but all she needed to know was how to hurt Gregory.

Gregory was still above her. It felt like she had the weight of the entire world on her. It didn’t matter.

Leah balled her fist up and drove it directly into his face.

She could breathe now.

“Fuck you.”

There was blood in her nose. It hurts to breathe. She could smell nothing but iron.

She put her hands on Gregory’s throat again and threw her weight to her side, trying to bring him down with her.

(C'mon. Let's dehumanize ourselves together.)

He think he broke her nose. Maybe? He couldn't tell. Either way there was like, some blood on his first from somewhere and, and he didn't know if it was from him or her or whatever and now she'd punched him in the face again and his nose was bleeding again. God damn it, this was like the second time today.

"Filler bitch!" Gregory spat, and then actually spat in her face. Sure, it wasn't going to do much but it made him feel better because she should have just lied down and died for him easy-peasy, because she was goddamn filler and that's all she was. He was looking like a fucking clown on international television, all because of Cory and Leah and those two fucking idiots on the boat. He'd kill them all, she and Cory and their friends would all die because she couldn't take the hint to die. He was probably gonna be in the Day 2 highlight clips at least.

Then she grabbed him by the throat again and threw herself down and Gregory - well, he hadn't had any kind of goddamn growth spurt yet so of course he went down with her, and then she was choking him and now he was the one wheezing and clawing at her.

Shit, shit shit he couldn't die here, it was barely Day 2! He wasn't going to die anyway but man, Day 2 would just be the absolute height of embarrassment! Right.

He had the knife. He reached down into his pocket, groping desperately for the knife as the tightness on his throat increased and then he got it and was stabbing, slashing blindly at her without any care as to what he hit. Her hands, her throat, her torso, it didn't matter because she was going to die.

She shouldn’t have told him about the damn shiv.

As soon as he went down, he was slashing at her. One shallow flesh wound over the other.

She felt pain everywhere.

Leah’s gonna have new scars on her arms to compliment the old ones.

She felt a streak of pain on her forehead. Something that’s either blood or spit dripped down to right above her eyelid, and she squeezed her eyes shut.

Too much pain.

Cut it out.

She felt her own weight on him.

Growling, Leah yanked Gregory’s arm away with one hand, and his head with another.

She put a fist into his hair.

Yanked at it upwards.

And then she slammed down. And then again.

Leah only realized the blood staining her chest when she looked down. That didn’t matter. None of it matters. She could stand it. It was just a flesh wound.

She was breathing so hard that it hurted.

It was working. He was too panicked to focus on stabbing, killing her, but she he could feel the blade cutting her. Her arms, her shirt was starting to get red, and he had left what looked like a bad gash on her forehead. But then again head wounds always did tend to bleed pretty hard. He was winning, he was winning, all he needed to do wasget a good stab in and then she'd-

A slash was interrupted by her grabbing his arm with a surprising strength, and then his hair. She lifted his head up by the hair, and he only got the faintest chance to grunt in pain before she slammed it back down onto the floor.

At least it was carpet.

His head was hurting, he thought. For a second he was disoriented. Maybe it was the haze of adrenaline. Maybe it was the fact that he had just had his head slammed into a floor, which would hurt even if the floor had carpeting. Maybe it's Maybelline-

No. He couldn't allow himself to get distracted, because that was a death ticket right there. No matter how catchy the fucking advert was, he couldn't afford it.

She was grabbing his knife arm, and he couldn't get it angled to stab at her no matter how hard he tried - Jesus, was she secretly Popeye or something? So he grasped, scrambled to wrap his hands around one of her other fingers and pulled back as hard as he could on it. Maybe she'd let go, maybe he'd break her finger. Either way, a win for him.

She didn’t realize what was going on when he first grabbed her finger.

Then, a crack.

She hissed in pain. Let go.

Leah was on the offense now.

She was the aggressor.

There was no point in continuing. She didn’t want to continue. It’ll hurt too much.

She was scared.

She hated being scared.

Fuck it.

Leah wrenched her fingers away from his hair and his hands, getting up and taking rapid steps back and grabbing her backpack.

Gregory looked like he was in pain. Her instincts told her to help him.

Instead, she aimed a kick right at his stomach, stomping down as she rummaged through her bag.

The cold metal of an arrow touched her hand.

She pointed it at him.

“Don’t make me hurt you.”

Please. Give up already.

He could feel something in her finger crack in his hand. Was her finger broken or had he just like, pulled it slightly? He hoped it was broken. Maybe the bitch would get an infection and die. It wouldn't be good TV, but it was a kill and at this point that's all that mattered. Getting a kill. He didn't even care if it was good TV or what. Leah just needed to die, like the same way you needed water or air or food or sleep.

And then, she got up, pulling herself back up and grabbing her bag. Gregory was confused as to why she was rummaging inside of it and then, all of a sudden, he remembered. The arrows. This whole thing had started because of the arrows, and now it would end that way. In a way, it was ironic. Like, an English teacher in some weird world where SOTF was a book would be pointing at him and lecturing her class about ironic fortune or something.

He wasn't good at English.

Now that she was away from him, he tried to back up, scooting his ass away from her, but she stomped on his stomach and he nearly threw up there. And man, how fucking dull would that be? Throwing up all over himself just because he got kicked in the stomach?

He was gonna have to shower again, wasn't he.

Curling up into himself and trying to ignore the pain in his head, his stomach, his throat and the blood streaming from his nose, Gregory looked up at Leah, and sneered.

"Fuck you."

Ok, Ok, things are fine now.

Better. Not fine, better.

Gregory was coughing and sputtering like Leah did a minute ago and she didn't really now what she should feel.

It isn't worth it.

She could leave now, if she wanted to.

She didn't have to do anything more than this. It's fine. It's all fine. Everything's fine. She picked up the book. She's safer now.

She clung to her bag and kept the projectile pointed right at him.

And then she took a step back.

And another.

Cautiously looking.

Don't do anything stupid.

(She left.)
