Perestroika

The dwellings found on the western side of the settlement were occupied by the poorer denizens of the town. These buildings tend to be low, small, densely-packed, and in questionable states of repair. Those that are more than one story tend to be divided into apartments, and were probably largely tenanted by sailors and dockworkers. The architecture is largely bare stucco and wood, and roofs are mostly flat. Gardens, when present, are small and poorly-maintained. Many of the buildings were clearly shared by many inhabitants, evidenced by extremely efficient layouts and numerous beds. The light here is poor, and there are a number of alleys and tight spaces suitable to concealment... or ambush.

Nastya had a good head on her shoulders. Rue couldn't relax, but she could feel just the tiniest bit better knowing that everyone else hadn't lost their head.

While Nastya checked the map they had been given, Rue steeled herself and finally opened her own bag. Her stomach clenched when her rummaging turned up something solid and metal, but when she grasped the object and pulled it out into the open, she couldn't help but bark out a humorless laugh. It was no gun, that was for sure. She wasn't sure what it was, but it looked to be one part crowbar and one part monkey wrench, or something along those lines.

"Looks like I'm expected to do some breaking and entering," she said with a grim smile. There was a part of her that wanted to keep laughing, and a part of her that wanted to burst into tears, and a part of her that wanted to curl up on the floor and never move again.

There was a part of her that refused to let go of the tool once it was in her hands, regardless of its intended use, and that was the part that she listened to as she allowed Nastya to take the lead outside.
