Open Grave

M07 Start; Open

North from the Ghost town is an old fashioned, but well maintained, wood and brick chapel. The building is surrounded by a large stone wall around it's premises. The chapel itself is in good, condition with rows of seats lining the inside of the main sermon room. There is also a back room formerly used by the preachers of the church. Outside of the chapel sits an empty graveyard, giving the location an almost ominous atmosphere.

We wake up in the middle of nowhere after having our train hijacked by some nut job with a western movie fixation and thrown into a situation which, real or otherwise was still deeply disturbing and these girls choose to occupy their time with insults and banter?

Maria’s little jab annoyed him he would admit, though he was aware that she was probably just reacting to her situation by lashing out, but the fact that it seemed to have sparked an argument between her and Lucy made it a waste of everyone’s time. He could understand Lisa’s attempt to use small talk to familiarise herself with people she doesn’t know a little more, but Alex still thought there were probably better things they could be doing right now.

Despite his previous plan to just stay quiet and stay out of the way he felt it would be best to step in now and break things up before they went to far; Maria had a reputation for these sort of things after all and Alex would rather this didn’t devolve into the fight to the death they were supposed to be engaging in. Maybe he could get things onto the right track as well.

Once again, Lisa found herself listening to Maria’s ramblings. She just had to be the first to say something, didn’t she? Apparently, she had assumed that Lisa didn’t know that they had been abducted and thrown into a deathmatch- she had worked as much out herself, thank you- and that they were in a church (she figured that one out too, but A for effort) being good kids. In Maria’s case, she was probably repenting for being a huge bitch. Yeah, that was totally it. Maria was obviously there for the same reason that she was, checking if anyone was alive in there. There was no reason to be all mysterious about it, dear. There’s no point to that in here. You’ll just piss people off and get a scythe to the face.

Lisa just sighed, loudly, and tried to get into her happy place. Out of the corner of her eye, she could almost see Lucy roll her eyes. That was good, she supposed. They were fed up with dealing with her shit, too. Lisa thought about her scythe, and Maria, and whether she could take Maria in a straight-up fight if she got violent. The answer to all of those was ‘Reply Hazy. Ask again.’ She’d let whatever insults were thrown her way slide, for now. She decided, for a second, to start a mental list of things not to do later on. Number 1. Small talk scares and confuses shady bitches.

And now she was waxing poetic about knights and fair maidens. Lisa wished she would just shut up and go die or go away or something. Lucy seemed far more reasonable, and explained that they couldn’t actually have done anything since they were pulling an R. Kelly and all. There, Maria. Was that so hard? Lucy jumped on the opportunity and made the comeback, and now Maria was apparently the court jester. Lisa thought ‘cadaver’ would suffice, if she didn’t stop being such a bitch, but she wasn’t exactly going to say that out loud. So she just smiled at Lucy’s joke and made sure she kept a firm grip on her scythe. Was she going to name it? That sounded cliché, but it might have made for a good joke later.

While that was going on, Alex asked just what they were going to do next. Right, they needed a plan or something. She had the feeling that being the only one with a weapon, her opinion probably held a lot of weight. She’d just have to wait and see.

“Well,” She said. “I have no clue what to do.”

She paused for a moment before ammending what she had said, before anyone else could jump in. She glanced over at Maria.

“I have no idea what to do, but can we please get the hell out of this church?”

Maria scowled at Lucy's joke, not so much for the joke itself but for setting herself up for it. Alex got them all back on track, and Lisa once again offered no suggestions. Maria may have stated the obvious, but at least she did it fully knowing how stupid it was to do that and thus didn't take it seriously.

"And where do we go? This church isn't much of anything, I'll admit to that. But without having a clue where we head to next we'd just be wasting our time and putting ourselves in danger." Maria sighed.

"If we knew a place to dig in, board up, and wait out the initial chaos that'd be great. Problem is, three of us started off here, and seeing as how you left the town I don't think it'd be smart to head back there. Personally, I have no clue which direction we should head in. I don't know enough about the area yet to say for sure where's a good place to stay for a bit." She clenched her teeth. "Bastards knocked us out and then tossed us in here, leaving us completely in the dark about safe locations or terrain. Add in some hopelessness, short tempers, and shock and it makes for some serious shit happening pretty soon."

She narrowed her eyes. "I don't know about you, but I plan to stay as far away from the psychos as possible. When the initial crazies give out in favor of the efficient fighters, that should be when you get on the move." Anyone with a brain could see that chaos was going to be breaking out all over the place as the gravity of the situation sunk in on the more fragile kids. The best option was to stay put and wait them out, taking out anyone who made their way to them. And when the psychos became good killers, that was when you ran.

All so simple, and yet these people were thinking about leaving the only safe location for who knows how much distance in favor of walking out into the freaking desert. Were they already crazy? Because if so, Maria was not keen on sticking with them, potential ally weapon or not.

"How do you know none of us are crazies?" Lucy replied, somewhat rhetorically, with a small smile. She glanced around at all of them, remembering again that she didn't know any of them particularly well, and realised that she should have been asking herself the same question. It seemed that the best way of doing this thing was to go it alone, but she wasn't equipped at the moment. If she could get her hands on a gun then she would be sorted. There was no way she was dying out here. She simply had too much to live for. There was a list a mile long in her head of all the things she wanted to do in her life, and she was going to make damn well sure that she did all of them.

Moving on from that train of thought, Lucy swung her rucksack up onto the back of a pew and began searching through it. On her initial search she had spotted a map, but ignored it in the hunt for a weapon. Producing the map, Lucy shook it open with a flourish and a helping hand when her fancy move didn't work as well as hoped. Giving a slight, self-deprecating grin she considered the map. They were at the church. Lucy had seen the sun outside and felt it beating through the door. It was at least vaguely cool in here, the solid brick seemed to reflect some of the heat that was baking outside. This is such bull. Sticking a bunch of Canadians in a festering desert like this! All the places had such depressing sounding names. Dry Plains. Ghost Town. At least this was just 'The Chapel', and that answered the little question as to whether it was a chapel or a church. And it wasn't a haunted chapel or an abandoned chapel or anything like that.

"Yeah, I dunno about moving on." That was possibly the first and only time she was going to agree with Maria on anything. Or did they have more in common than she realised? Lucy shivered a little at the thought. "It's cool here," it seemed weird bringing up the weather given that she was the only person in the room who hadn't been outside yet. She flattened the map so that everyone else could see it and, her hands being full, nodded at the location of the chapel on the map. "But I'm open to suggestions, anyone see anywhere that looks promising?"

((Skipping due to inactivity.))

She listened, for a moment, to what Maria had to say, but as soon as she heard an ever so condescending sigh come out of her lips, Lisa knew it was time for her to leave the chapel. So, she took a slow step backwards, and hoped everyone was too caught up in what Maria was saying to notice her until it was too late.

After the first few steps, Lisa picked up the pace, reaching behind her with her injured arm. Her fingers brushed against the wooden door, and she paused. If she had to, she could run, now, and hope they had no way of following her. If they somehow managed to track her down, she could just lead them into the town, hide underneath the floorboards of some old building, and just wait there, eating beef jerky until someone else picked them off. With their weapons, they wouldn’t last long in a straight fight.

There were far better solutions to her situation. She was hoping, mostly, that she could get out of the chapel without having to run. Better yet, without having to run, and without Maria yelling out something witty about her. The last one wasn’t likely.

She had thought it over too much. It was now, she decided, or never.

“Fuck it guys,” She began, shaking her head. “Fuck it, I am leaving this shitty church.”

Lisa took another step back, pushing the door open with one hand, and curling the fingers of the other tightly around her scythe. She held it up, as if to ward them away from following her. Even she thought it looked ridiculous, but she hoped it would stop them from following her.

“I am leaving right now. If any of you want to follow me, that’s fucking great, but I cannot stand one more minute of this church.” She was practically yelling now. Very classy. What would her mother think of her language?

Steadying herself on the doorframe, Lisa took another step back, and her sandal hit ground. Smirking a little, she carefully exited the chapel, slamming the door closed behind her. It would slow them down if they followed.

She stuck to walking in the shade until she was almost sure no one had followed her.

((Bluh! Skipping for inactivity, sorry.))

For once Lucy wasn't being such a confrontational bitch and actually agreed with Maria on one point. Though, her first question did get Maria thinking that maybe she wasn't as safe as she thought. While Lucy seemed open to suggestions, which unfortunately noone seemed to have any, the fact remained they still hadn't decided what to do.

So when out of nowhere, Lisa just decided to up and abandon them, it caught Maria by surprise. She watched her go without a word, just bewilderment on her face. As the door slammed behind the girl, Maria turned to the others and said, "How the fuck did that just happen?" Bewilderment turned to anger, and she got up from her seat, moved closer to the door and yanked it open.

"The fuck is wrong with you?" she yelled. "Are you fucking crazy or something? Hey! Don't you walk away from me bitch! Hey!" When it was clear the other girl was just going to leave, she stopped.

"Un-fuckin-believable" she said with a scowl.

She turned to the other two again. "Uhh... fuck. I'm not going to be welcome here much longer am I?"

((Again, apologies for inactivity. And for skipping.))

Before they could answer, Maria changed her tune. "But I can make up for that. Both of you two, under my protection. First psycho that comes around, I'll deal with. No questions asked. Will you let me stay if I do that?" She didn't want to give anyone else power over her, the decision of whether she would make it or not.

But neither did she want to leave. Truth was, she was scared. Friggin terrified really. All that was out there was a world no sane Canadian girl would ever willingly venture into.

She stopped at that last thought. Canadian.

She'd never thought of herself as that before.

Alex listened quietly and shook his head as the girls bickered together amongst themselves. Then one of them left the building.

"Sure you can stay." he said in response to Maria. "But I'm thinking about leaving this church for a while, this whole place gives me the creeps."

He pushed open the chapel door from which Lisa exited and looked out.

"I think she might have the right idea. There's a river out there and this is a desert right? People are gonna be looking for water. If we can follow alongside the shores, maybe we might run into somebody we know, if not, somebody at all. Who knows, maybe I might even be able to put some use to this inner-tube here."

Alex patted his inner-tube and headed out, not even confirming if the two the girls were going to follow him.

((Resuming activity in 3... 2... 1..))

Whoa whoa whoa.

What was going on?

First, Lisa decided to up and leave. Lucy felt the panic rise in her as the one person with a half decent weapon disappeared through the door. She made a half hearted attempt to follow the girl, even though she got the impression that Lisa didn't really want the company, but Maria was quicker off the mark and quickly blocked the doorway as she shouted after Lisa. Backing down, Lucy turned to shrug at Alex. He'd been quiet for a while, which was sort of understandable but a little bit annoying. Even if you were a shy retiring recluse or something, this was a life or death situation! How could you not want to be intimately involved?

Maria turned to face the two of them, asking a question that immediately made Lucy feel uncomfortable. Because the girl wasn't really all that welcome. She had a reputation that proceeded her and it wasn't a good one, and it wasn't even like she had a good weapon. But at the same time Lucy thought that she might be a good ally. There seemed to be more similarities between them than she really wanted to admit to.

And, if it came to it and they were the only two left, Lucy figured she would have an easier time killing someone she didn't really like than if she partnered up with a good friend. And if Maria was going to help protect them from psycho's, well... Not that she really enjoyed this damsel in distress thing she'd apparently become.

Of course, Alex said she could stay. Lucy furrowed her eyebrows a little, wishing that he had a bit more backbone. But all the same, she found herself nodding along with him, trying not to look overly keen.

And then, just as quickly as Lisa had, Alex said something about water and finding other people and left the chapel as well. Lucy waved a hand after him sarcastically.

"Farewell, good knight!"

She put the map down on her bag and studied Maria for a moment, trying to figure out what was going on. Five minutes ago they had been amicably (well, sort of) discussing the pro's and con's of moving on versus staying put, and now they were down to two people. And if Lucy was honest, it was the person she least wanted to end up with out of the lot of them.

"Ok," she said after a pause, looking Maria in the eye. "We can team up. Fight the crazies." The crazies that used to be her schoolmates. That was a thought for another inner monologue. "I think we need to find better weapons. A spatula isn't going to get us anywhere, and my bottle of moonshine isn't up to much unless we want to throw it in people's eyes or spike their drinking water. I want a gun or a bow and arrow something..." The practical side of her nature was surfacing again. "At the same time, this place is easy to defend. We could lure people in, take their weapons, and then..." she wanted to say kill them, but realised that might make her sound like one of the crazies she was trying to kill. "Well, something..." she mumbled, finishing her sentence.

And Alex left as well. Maria just gave him a solemn nod as he left. She understood. He had his own shit to worry about, no need to elaborate further.

And Lucy took charge and started forming a plan. But she seemed hesitant to say what she knew she needed to say. "If you mean kill them... well... there are other ways to disable someone without killing them. I know a few." She said, more matter-of-factly than with any sort of emotion behind it.

"This isn't a fucking castle or anything like that. But it'll do for know. We wait for someone with a good weapon to show up, beat the fight out of them, take the weapon and repeat at least once. Once the storm of crazy blows over, we should move." She shook her head. "Only question is, where?"

(Apologies for skipping, but the inactvity snake looms)

She made a swing, wild and unrefined. Her opponent easily dodged, and she got a knee in the stomach because of it. She dropped to the floor clutching her abdomen. She wasn't in the best of shape having been hit there twice in the same fight. But Maria would not back down. "That all you got, punk? My grandma could kick your ass if that's it."

"Shut your trap bitch. You messed with the wrong group." The boy replied. He took out a pocketknife and flipped it open. "I'm gonna stick this in your mouth so you can learn to keep it shut."

Before he could, he took a elbow to the back of his head. His goons likwise were ambushed and quickly dispatched. Maria got up and spat on the guy. "The fuck are you doing here James. I didn't need your help. I had it under control."

"Clearly" he replied.

It was all she could do to keep herself from going mad. But Maria studied and studied the map until she had memorized it. "The river should be a good place to move onto first when we do need to move on. Water first, then fortifications."

But she still didn't have a clue where to go afterwards. She was sure that once they moved on, it wouldn't be safe to come back to the Chapel. But she couldn't think of anything else more out of the way and isolated.

She sighed. James would have known what to do. But Maria wasn't as good a leader as he was. Why did he make it seem so easy, she thought. Who was she even kidding. She was no leader. So why did it bother her so much to just let Lucy lead?

They were totally different. And yet here they were, agreeing and working together. Was it just because of the situation? Was the survival game to blame? More than likely. But Maria knew a partnership based on mutual protection and care would only last as long as they both needed each other. The moment they didn't...
"You're too reckless Maria. You need to stop. You're only going to get hurt if you keep this up." James stated as he bandaged her up. Much as she hated to admit it, he was right. He always was.

"You know, you act less like a boyfriend and more like a Dad. It's starting to get on my nerves."

"One day you'll appreciate my advice Maria. And on that day, I wish I could be there to help you, but I won't."

"Sure James, sure."

Lucy nodded, trying to keep most of her thoughts from surfacing.

"Yeah, good point about water," in this heat they were going to need it before too long, even if the chapel was slightly cooler than outside. She rubbed her nose idly, brimming with the effort off trying to stay on good terms with Maria. Even though they were planning together, she kept thinking the same thing over and over. You can outrun her. You can outrun her. Maria wasn't really into sports as far as Lucy knew. Whereas she played volleyball and ran track and while Maria would almost certainly beat her in a fistfight, if she could somehow avoid getting too badly injured or pinned down she reckoned she could make her escape.

What are your parents thinking? The thought burst into her head like a bullet. Suddenly, Lucy was gripped with an image of them sitting on the couch in the living room. Her Mom cradling her head in her hands, James trying to show how unaffected he was but sneaking out to the bathroom and coming back with reddened eyes. Her Dad pacing up and down, focussing on the practical to avoid thinking about the emotional. She had no idea what Rosie would be doing. The last time this had happened the eldest sister was the one that was missing.

The last time this happened? It was never supposed to happen again. She had always been careful, never gone out for the high adrenaline sports she always craved for the fear that it might. Lucy shook her head, as though it might shake the image out of her mind. She glanced over at Maria, feeling a need to explain why she'd just shaken her head.

"Thought there was a fly," Lucy explained idly. "I'm wondering if it's worth staying here until we get some weapons? Unless we hide by the door waiting for people to come in then use the element of surprise to steal their's. I'm not sure what's best at the moment." Sitting by the door had the benefit of ease, but they couldn't be sure anyone would come here any time soon. Then again, going out into the heat meant exposing themselves, and there were probably crazies out there. Yeah, your classmates... Shut up brain!

(Brian Larke continued from It's not like it's for real or anything, right?)

Brian could not remember the last time he had gone to church, probably to make his parents happy some time a couple of years ago, but once he got an after school job he had started working on Sundays, and they never said anything about it. He didn't know why he was showing up now, of all times. He just knew that it made more sense than walking, to sit down some. He didn't want to stay on the streets, the Train Station had just made him annoyed since no train was bound to take him out of this situation. Everywhere was screwed, wasn't it?

He had just wanted to kind of get away from Vivian. From Rebecca. From girls for once, which sort of surprised him. He just wanted to be alone, to think, then maybe he could find Renee and call in that favor she promised him. He wasn't stupid, if a girl offers sex in this scenario, why wouldn't he take it?

Although now isn't particularly the time to think about it, he couldn't really think of anything else to comfortably think about while walking.

He paused with his hand on the door, were those voices? Well, of course some people would come to a chapel in this kind of situation. You didn't have to be a bible thumper to want to do that, hell, Brian himself was doing that. Did he want to go in? Was that even remotely a good idea?

Not everyone is you, Brian.

Well why aren'tthey?

He frowned at this, and was about to open the door when something stopped him.

His shotgun. It wasn't loaded.

"Shit."

He quickly slipped a shell from its box in his bag and cracked the gun, loading it as quickly and quietly as he could. He wasn't going to shoot anyone, of course, but what if they wanted to shoot him? There. That was better.

He opened the door and took a cautious step inside.

Dear God, I hope I haven't made out with any of you, he thought desperately.

"Well what else can we do right now? Neither of us have a weapon and I'm not gonna start a fistfight with someone who has a gun. Honestly, we need a better plan but right now there's just nothing to do but wait."

Wait forever? That was all it seemed that they were doing. It hadn't been very long since the others left, but it felt like forever. But as boring and dull as it was, it was safe here.

"For now, we're safe. So I don't see a reason to-"

The door creaked open slowly, tnrowing all feeling of safety in Maria's mind out to the wind. Someone was coming inside. Someone was bringing them back to the reality of the twisted game.

"Looks like your question just answered itself. Majorly."

(Sorry to skip, but Brian's got to get out of here!)

Did he hear sonething? This time he was partially sure, and took another step further into the chapel before the announcements crackled over the loudspeaker.

He wasn't mentioned yet, at least he didn't think so, Brian only half listened to those things and thru weren't really important....that is, until the chapel was mentioned as a danger zone.

"Shit!" he cursed, backing out immediately. That sort of safe haven just wasn't worth it. He'd find it elsewhere.

He broke into a jot, hoping it wasn't an instant sort of thing....
