Never Fade Away

Day 2 - Private

The eye-watering, immense slabs of heat-sink asphalt were a crucial part of the ubiquitous Californian aesthetic; what is less typical to the average student's eye, however, is how this parking lot extends past the school block, on all sides, a repetitive grid of white and yellow pavement guidelines onto infinity. The vehicles that populate the area are now far stranger than the pretense of middling-salary teachers' cars, never used or needed. Now, there are limousines, school buses, and even the odd tank haphazardly strewn about the bitumen expanse; some of these vehicles seem perfectly operational, while others are mere wrecks. Even the functional ones offer no escape from the arena; around one mile in any direction lies an invisible, indestructible wall, which marks the border of this modern hippodrome. During the night cycle, all the vehicle lights are on, which provides illumination through the area—so much so that it might be hard to move around undetected.

...This...

...

...What just happened?

Rikario stood on the tarmac where Vee was supposed to be, where Vee used to be. He was still trying to wrap his head around what happened. Rikario saw him in perfect condition, so he was supposed to be fine. There was no reason for him to be brutally glitched out of the world, but it still happened to him anyway. So why did it happen? Or better yet, how?

Rikario tried to remember what happened in those few moments. So after Vee finished his speech, he jumped off the tank and landed on a detached car door. After that, all hell broke loose. The car door sank to the ground, along with Vee halfway through his body. His body began to jitter and move uncontrollably, and he started flailing in different directions. He and Kenton ran over to him, not knowing what was happening until everything worsened. Out of nowhere, the car door suddenly shot out from the ground and to the digital skies. Rikario shielded himself in fear of getting hit as he raised his arms, but the moment he looked back, Vee disappeared, nowhere to be seen.

So Rikario stood there, terrified. He still didn't have a clue about what happened to Vee. The only person in his place was Kenton, trying to pry the ground with his bare hands. Rikario slowly approached behind him, tears now flowing from his eyes. There wasn't any sobbing, nor was there any screaming, just tears. He looked down at Kenton to see blood flowing from his fingertips. Whatever opening was there before was now closed off, for good. He knows this, and Kenton should know this too. His fingers would snap off if he kept digging into the paved road. Rikario kneeled on both knees and placed a hand on his shoulder, still staring at the now bloodstained markings.

His smile... His confidence... his newfound hope...

It was only for a moment...

...W-What? Did he-did he just went out of bounds?

It took one moment. From him landing on a fallen car door to glitching erratically. Barely a second, but it may as well be an eternity for how long it felt. The screaming from the walkie-talkies, though, lasted for much longer. And then it faded, too.

She almost wanted to hope that it would return, shaken up but fine. Sometimes, the software recognize the player falling off the ground and correct this by putting it back again on a spawn point. Some do it, why wouldn't they-

...No, they didn't. She knew it, but what was left of her to do then? She lost another friend, and she could only watch. Once again, she stood still. Pale, frozen on the spot. Her hands were clenching furiously as she watched Kenton ruining his hands as he clawed on the floor, like he could break concrete with it.

He couldn't. His blood was pooling on the ground as Rikario tried to console him. Yet another thing she couldn't do. All she could think was if they implemented infections. And so she knelt next to him, her hands already on her bag as she looked for the first aid kit. "...L-Let me see your fingers, Spooks."

She couldn't bear to look him in the eyes. She was afraid of what she'd see in them.

As everyone fell into a panic, Xtra too experienced a surge of fear and anger, but it only controlled her for a moment. She took two steps towards where Vee had vanished, scream echoing from the walkie-talkie clipped to her belt, but by the time Spook, Amy, and even Rikario were making for the spot, Xtra had slowed down.

While Spook scrabbled impotently at the asphalt, Xtra took the mental equivalent of a deep breath—no actual change in her breathing pattern to pair with it, of course, because breathing was obsolete here—and considered the situation with a greater level of detachment.

Obviously, something had gone wrong with the collision physics. How wrong, and to what precise effect, she couldn't say. But there was a way to gather evidence and perhaps to figure out what they could do, if they could do anything, without just freaking out and screaming and slamming into the ground with self-destructive abandon.

Xtra looked up, at the same time making conscious note of the time on her HUD, though only the minutes and seconds marker: 37:26. Estimate three to five seconds lost to indecision. That was, in this situation, almost an eternity, but what she was waiting for had not yet happened.

The skybox was very high up. By the time Xtra looked, she could not see the car door, presumably too far away and against the light of the artificial sun. That didn't mean it was gone, though.

CR was not limited by real world physics. Nonetheless, for reasons of verisimilitude, most developers did their best to build their physics engines in a way that at least loosely resembled meatspace physics. Everything Xtra had seen here made her think that, bar a handful of carefully-coded exceptions, that was what they were dealing with. This meant that Newton's Third Law, or some rough approximation thereof, could be assumed to be in effect.

Equal and opposite reaction: Vee went down, and the door went up. But where Xtra could only guess what lay beneath the asphalt (granted, an educated guess; she expected it was a grey or black void, likely with a pretty nice view because opacity was only coded from one side), she could say for sure what was above, and in the form of gravity there was a force in play to arrest the momentum of the door and bring it back to them. How long that took would give them information, and obviously nobody else had the presence of mind to care, so it was up to her to monitor.

37:34.

37:40.

37:47.

Xtra remained stock still. She had a sinking feeling about this.

“Vee, Vee? Are you there? Talk to me Vee, please!”

Winter’s hands shook as she shouted into the walkie-talkie. There still wasn’t any response.

She’d rollerbladed up, away from the car, towards where Vee had land, but even with her speed… she could do nothing. She was standing just behind Kenton, a frozen expression on her face.

But he’d spoken over walkie-talkie. They could do something. Try something.

So she’d try multiple times. She kept barking like this into the walkie-talkie.

“Vee… please, say something. Tell us where you are. You’re out of bounds, right?! Please, just give us a sign! Over!”

No response.

“Vee… Vee… say something, you fuck! I’m… we’re… worried… no, we’re– don’t be an asshole, just let us know–”

Still no response.

Maybe one more time.

“Fucking Vee… please, if you don’t respond, I’ll… I’ll go down there myself and— and— I’ll yell really badly! I swear! I mean it! Over–”

He still wasn’t saying anything.

She hated feeling powerless like this. She hated the idea of being so… helpless. She was okay earlier, right? Everything was okay. Vee was okay. They could just–

Maybe another–

Kenton paused, as he was regaining his focus. He realized what he had done.

Hare was yelling at the walkie-talkie trying to get Vee back. It wasn't going to be of any use. He was down there and he lost the walkie-talkie.

There is no ground that is programmed in a void.

He didn't want to think about what it would be like for Vee.

He was still screaming and-

"Kenton!"

He was trying, but the thing that down there, there was nothing. Just a black void. Or perhaps an endless sky. The last thing that Vee saw was the map from underneath.

Kenton heard another voice. Close by.

It was Amy.

She was digging in her bag for a first-aid kit. She was talking about his fingers.

His fingers were bleeding. He was feeling the pain now. It was something that he ignored in his frenzy, but now they were hurting like hell. His nails were completely shredded and cracked apart. All that was dripping from his fingers was his blood.

Kenton let Amy get his hands wrapped up. Rikario was next to him with his hand on his shoulder. Kenton remained silent, as he was remembering what Vee had said before he clipped out of bounds.

The Omega Squad can't let anyone buy into Zeph's threats. They needed to stop the slaughter somehow, even if it means doing some poetic justice.

His eyes were still where Vee fell, now stained with neon green blood thanks to Kenton. He could only hear the clear confusion beginning to circle the other Omegas. Amy was checking on Kenton's bloodied fingers, Hare shouted on the walkie-talkie to get an answer from Vee, and he didn't hear anything from Xtra, but from her silence, it was safe to say that she was also figuring out what happened.

Funny enough, he remembered a similar incident from his childhood before CR. He watched his older brother, Matias, playing an FPS game on the computer long ago. He remembered Matias's character crouching behind a bell tower before jumping off. Unexpectedly, his character landed on a barrel, causing him to launch out of the map. The game couldn't identify if he died, so Rikario and Matias watched as the character began to glitch out and distort until the match ended, much to their horror.

But that was before, things improved back then to prevent problems like this. Sure there were a few minor bugs, but they weren't as fatal. If he remembered, Zeph told everyone the game was as realistic as possible. Unless...

"T-t-t-they..." He took a gulp when he realized. "T-t-they've deleted h-him..."

They planned an uprising to stop the game, and in response, Zeph removed Vee from the game.
They're so screwed, aren't they?

T-There's a lot of blood.

...For some reason, it was her only thought as she pull out what was needed from the kit. Her hands trembled as she grasped everything, head buried in her bag and her teeth gritted hard. She wasn't sure what to feel anymore and seeing Vee gone like that-Why like this, why them, why him, whywhywhy-didn't help.

She imbued the gauze with alcohol; she cut it. She was silent as a grave as she wrapped Spooks' fingers with it. It didn't took long; the fingernails were cracked and his hands were full of small cuts, but for the rest he looked okay-he really wasn't. He didn't say a word, and neither did she. He was grieving; talking wouldn't be right.

But when she was done covering his hands up and tape it together, it looked-at least from the outside-presentable, and so she eased up. She glanced at Hare, yelling on the walkie-talkie; talking to a dead line. She looked back at Rikario, looking at the bloodstained floor and mumbling something; it sounded like a prayer. Ángel wasn't there, and she couldn't see Xtra.

She then looked at the tank. There was no-one there. Her eyes clenched shut. "W-What do we do now?"

Was that a question? A plead? And to whom?

With not a sign of the vanished door after over a minute, Xtra turned away and allowed her attention to center on the others again.

It wasn't good. Hare was freaking out. Spook and Rikario seemed dazed. Amy appeared to be the closest to holding it together, but even she lacked a clear purpose and trajectory—Xtra slipped over next to her just in time to hear the girl's question.

Just in time to respond.

"We keep going."

Her voice was calm, level. Inside, there was turmoil and sadness, of course. Vee was their leader for a reason. He was their balance, able to get them all to work together, to take the best parts of each of them and allocate those resources efficiently. While each member of the squad might have their own specific areas in which they outperformed Vee, none of them could touch him on that front, and it was the loss of that leadership that would be felt the most deeply at a time when they desperately needed cohesion.

Anybody else would've been an acceptable casualty. The game continued without a sniper, or a scout. But with no shotcaller, you were flying blind. And Xtra knew that this was not her sphere of expertise.

But she also knew it wasn't anybody else's. And, wherever they ended up in an hour or a day, for right now she was the closest to steady, so it was her shot to call.

"We should move out. This area is clearly unstable. If we can help Vee, we'll need a better plan and more information. If it was time-sensitive, the time has passed. If it's not, it's not."

Her eyes were narrow, the whole world tinted red through her sunglasses. The question here was simple: was there a kill plane? She had no way of telling. If there was, as soon as Vee hit it, that was that. If not, he could either fall forever or eventually bottom out. The latter would be better; in the long run the former might get him—or even all of them—into trouble, depending on how the server rendered the in-bounds areas. But they could do nothing about that now.

"Maybe we can do something with the portal gun," Xtra said. "But we should find a safe place and wait for the announcement. Then we'll know."

And in the meantime?

She'd been ready to follow Vee's plan, but would it last without him here? She wondered.

No. He can’t be deleted, he just… can’t.

Winter’s hands kept shaking, but she stopped barking into the walkie-talkie.

And then…? If he was…?

He was…

He couldn’t be. Maybe there was a way to rescue him still. Maybe he wasn’t replying for some reason or another, ha. Ha.

“Right… portal gun.”

Of course! If they had a portal gun, that’d be one way to get that rescue mission going. Figure out where he landed specifically, and then give him a way out. But how? Winter knew a lot of things but she wasn’t sure what would work here., But there was still a chance, probably.

“Right…”

Her trembling free hand rubbed the back of her neck. She was sweating.

“Um, anime club, or…?”

Should Rikario have said that? Should he think Zeph was trying to set him and the others at a clear disadvantage? No. No that wouldn't be right. If Zeph wanted to stop an escape plot, he would've deleted them all. Why delete Vee when you could delete his...

No. Stop. Stop thinking about dreadful ideas.

His eyes were still glued to the spot as Xtra talked. His mind still raced through any idea he could think of what to do, but Xtra was right, they needed to leave. Rikario quietly stood up while still fixated on the asphalt. Nothing. Still nothing. His arms hugged around himself, and his mouth was clenched tightly, almost as if his lips were sewn shut. His body tensed, still fearing the worst.

Even without Vee, they still have a plan. They still have the drive to fight back right?

Right?

...right?

The pain that he felt when Amy was applying the alcohol pads snapped Kenton out of his train of thought. She was applying a lot of gauze to wrap up his fingers to remind him to not at what was left of his fingernails. Rikario had mumbled something in his low voice that Vee was deleted.

He didn't want to hear it anymore. He didn't want to think of Vee and what Zeph might have done with him.

Amy asked on what they were going to do, until Xtra had to take charge and state that they had to move out. The parking lot was on unstable ground. If they continued to stay here, the ground could continue to glitch out. First, it would be car doors, then it can be whole vehicles. Next thing, Kenton can figure, it will be a giant void. Zeph probably wanted the server to glitch out, so many people can die.

But, of course, they had to discuss Vee again. Discuss how they can use Kenton's portal gun that he currently had in his bag, so they can just open up a portal and save him.

Spooks already knew how the mechanics with the portal gun worked to know that wasn't going to happen.

"That's not how it works."

Kenton said, clenching his fists with his newly-bandaged fingers. He moved them around, since they were more like white-padded sausages. He stood up almost abruptly. He wasn't looking at his fellow Omega Squad members. "The portal gun doesn't open up holes in the ground. You don't go through terrain. You only go through one side and come out through the same side at another location. There's no opening here and there will never be."

Kenton was getting his belongings ready, checking to make sure that the machete at his side was still good for a reason. He turned to Xtra, wanting to present his firm standing in the group. "We're retreating back to the anime club, like what Hare said. There's nothing left here."

Kenton sounded a little bit too eager to leave, but the agitated tone in the voice said it all.

Keep going. So easy to say it. And so, so hard to do it.

Amy agreed on leaving, however. She wanted to drive the tank away and wait for everything to settle, but it was becoming clear for her that everything in this world was slowly cracking apart. First the rooftops, then the greenhouses, and now the parking. Nowhere was safe for long, and she could see why: making a stable map for doomed kids wasn't worth it. They weren't worth the trouble.

They'll pay, for everything.

But then why fix it? They weren't planned, that was clear; it was just another way to mess them over, for them to just pop up and fix it was an huge risk that could get them exposed. What if-

"I know how the portal gun works," Xtra said as she took a quick look around, making sure everything was gathered up properly. "Something happened here, and we don't know what yet. If it's about momentum, that's something we can use the gun to adjust."

She'd played Portal. It had been easy, even for something a touch outside her norm. She'd played various CR riffs on the same concept, too. It would be fairly simple to achieve terminal velocity, then direct that velocity in a specific direction, to whatever purpose they desired. The catch was that, unlike in Portal, they would have fall damage to worry about.

But that was all irrelevant. She was getting distracted, agitated. It didn't matter that Spook hadn't been able to catch her drift; what mattered was that they were on the same page when it came to what to do, that being leave, right away.

"Anime club is good." She gave a nod. It didn't really matter. What was important was keeping them together and preventing morale from tanking while they waited for a final answer.

"And," she added, "we can decide what to do about the plan when we're there. Let's go."

With that, and one more glance at the distant skybox, she turned and set out. No room for debate. She would get the others to follow through action.

Okay, so, maybe not the portal gun? Orrrrrr… you could be clever and find a way to get a portal to Vee.

But now that Winter was calming down some, she could think a little more. What Vee was likely experiencing was an out-of-bounds glitch. It depends on whether it was accounted for in programming the system. He could be softlocked, hence why he never responded, which means he was frozen somewhere, unable to respond, and they’d have to pull him out. Somehow, that’d be worse, if he wasn’t dead, just frozen in time unable to do anything. And that was presuming it even still looked like Vee at that point.

Maybe he was wandering around, scared and helpless inside a void.

Winter remembered all the times she got an out-of-bounds glitch. Sometimes there was a crash, sometimes you were softlocked, sometimes you wandered alone inside a grey and black field, sometimes you get visual distortion.

She wiped a lock of hair out of her face, puffing. She was scowling.

Winter still hated feeling helpless. She hated feeling powerless. She hated the fact that Vee was stuck down there. She hated that Zeph tricked them, still. She hated that her body was still rotting away inside a hospital bed. She hated that she wasn’t as potent as she knew she was deep down.

And with that, she followed Xtra. She didn’t even look back at her baby.

Xtra seemed to have taken the squad's lead by announcing to reconvene at a club room. Rikario finally let his eyes go from the ground only to see her and Hare making their leave into the building. Hands still grabbing the sides of his arms, he began to feel conflicted about what to do. He knew that he needed to speak up and state his concerns, or try to say something, or anything at all. Instead, he felt his feet walk towards Xtra & Hare as his jaw sealed shut.

He had no idea what was going to happen now.

And that's what made him scared.
