The Reviews Are In, and It Does Not Look Good At All

Open

The Cigarette Holder is a glamorous theater of massive proportions decorated in an exaggerated artsy style. Black and White portraits of famous actors and actresses such as Clark Gable, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and Audrey Hepburn are put up for miles and miles along the walls, golden stars in between. It's divided into 6 screening rooms: Action, Romance, Comedy, Thriller, Drama, and Horror, which indulge in showing their relevant SOTF-TV scenes. The lobby in the middle holds a popcorn maker, a soda fountain, and lobby games such as air hockey, hoop shooting, pinball, and an arcade racer built for two.

Asa had never been more unhinged in his life. He had gotten mad, sure. Furious, even. But he never got physical. He was never an active guy back home. He figured his best way to defeat his opponents would be with words. Lunkheads fought with their fists, but real strategists could use rhetoric to make things go their way.

Of course, there was something about repeatedly stomping on a guy on the ground that Asa was finding just a little bit satisfying. It was probably because he was winning and because Gene had no real chance to retaliate, but Asa felt more powerful now than he had since he woke up. After the humiliation that was waking up in the ice rink, planning pissy retaliation with Dumb DeeDee, and getting attacked by Mary-Lou Anachronism, it was good to know he could make things go his way.

Still, Asa had a challenge ahead of him. Gene had managed to get his backpack off and was trying to use it to defend himself.

"You think that can help you?" Asa shouted at Gene.

Asa reached down and grabbed the bag. He stomped on Gene's chest, yanking the bag out of his hands.

"Nothing can help you now, you sack of shit!"

Asa gave one last swing at Gene's groin, savoring the impact.

"Now get the fuck out of here!"

There was no response to his jumbled requests and vague phrases, and Corin turned away from the mirror. Disappointed, he picked up his rifle. He wished to move on; there was little point in remaining where he was. Though the fact that there wasn’t really anywhere better to go was becoming heavier, not unbearable but it agitated him.

There was largely nothing outside of the bathroom that caught his interest for long. He moved at a quick pace, the rifle hoisted at the ready as a cautionary measure. As he drew closer to the room, he could hear Asa screaming in his peripheral hearing. He recognised the voice; the words were barely audible over the noise of the theatre.

He could understand ‘Now… fuck out of here’ and that was all.

He waited for something else to come, his mind bringing up scenarios of what it could and could not be. Either Asa was violently reacting to the screen again, or there was an actual conflict. He tried to push back some feelings of sympathy; he wanted to be pragmatic, but not responsible for another death. He knew that it was better to ignore him in the long run, but his brain continued skipping back to the idea that he’d inadvertently get more blood on his hands.

He opened his mouth as if to say something, but quickly shut it. He began to slowly tread, after some mental deliberation he decided that Asa would have to handle whatever issues he had on his own. He clenched his teeth together and breathed shallowly, as he tried to pass.

Asa finally released him and Gene then went to the direction of the exit. The fact that he has no bag anymore did not matter. At least he wouldn't need to be beaten up by Asa again.

After he left the room, the golden pimp grabbed the pogo-stick and slowly walked away from that room.

He was however stopped when he saw a boy.

The boy had a gun. A gun is always good. It would be more effective than any melee weapon. Gene imagined that if he had been assigned a gun instead of a slingshot, he’d have killed way more people. He might’ve won. And he wouldn’t have been injured as much. He’d have avoided every hand-to-hand combat. Although Dylan Calloway managed to win with a toaster, a gun would always be better than his pogo-stick.

Gene then approached the boy. He wanted to look non-hostile so he dragged his pogo-stick on the ground, instead of raising it. His intention however was to go so near to be able to grab the rifle to control it, steal it and turn it around. It was risky, but definitely possible. And it would be a cool comeback. If he gets a gun, he would go back to Asa. Gene’s breathing was still heavy, he wanted no conversation with the boy and he wanted to go to the boy more easily, so he waved his hand around, while he walked to him, to look like he was deaf. That way no conversation will happen. Gene hoped the brown-haired boy, he dubbed “Mr. Stubble” for himself, didn’t know sign language.

When Gene was close enough he then dropped his pogo-stick and lunged for the gun.

Corin stopped short of passing when a new boy appeared, the new presence cause him to halt a moment as he evaluated the who was in front of him. Judging from the fact that the boy looked a bit roughed up and where he came from it was not difficult for him to assume that this had been the reason for Asa’s outcry. Corin didn’t move at first, he was still grasping the situation in front of him.

Corin’s view moved to the pogo stick that the boy had dragged across the floor. To Corin that didn’t look anything more than aggressive and thuggish. The odd body language brought Corin nothing but discomfort, the guy was a stranger who was slowly advancing towards his personal space.

He raised the rifle, turned off the safety and rested his finger near the trigger.

He mentally urged the other boy to turn around, thinking that he’d be able to cow the other boy into stopping his advance by intimidation. His body tensed up and he subconsciously tried to make himself look larger, as he subconsciously tried to stand taller. The gun was trained a little off; he’d fire a warning and hope that he’d clear off without any confrontation. He subtly moved his head side to side; he was shaking it, a disproving hint towards the other guy. He started gritting his teeth and bearing them, as the other boy didn’t seem to get the hint. He did some strange hand action; Corin just didn’t understand the purpose of it. He didn’t recognise the signal as sign language, but he understood that to communicate the person in front of him wouldn’t need to encroach on his space.

Then he lunged without warning, reaching for the rifle. Corin reeled back and fired the warning shot without properly thinking, and it connected with Gene’s outstretched hand. It connected when it shouldn’t have, and Corin could only watch the next few moment in revulsion as the other boy recoiled in pain from the shock.

Suddenly there was a shot. Then blurred vision. Pain.

He had been beaten by Aidan, Vahka and Asa.

But he never was shot.

It hurt. Way more than anything else before.

His right ring finger and pinky were gone. If Yagmur ever saw that.

He couldn’t be silent anymore, he couldn’t play deaf anymore. He had to hum. The hum turned into a groan. The groan turned into a scream. And then he repeated the word “fuck” constantly.

Throwing himself away from the stubbled boy, he fell down on the ground. The boy did not shoot anymore. He slowly stood up.

He then picked up his pogo-stick again and ran out of the building. Luckily the boy did not follow him. Luckily the boy did not seem to want to kill him.

His next words were supposed to be ‘Don’t try anything funny, if you don’t want to be shot.’ but they never came. Corin instead emitted a soft bewildered groan; it was the only verbal communication that he could manage. It was supposed to be moment that ended without anyone bleeding all over the carpet, but Gene’s unpredictability quickly put an end to any plans for a simple parting. He could feel weakness in his knees as Gene at first produced what could only be described as a primal shriek of pain.

Corin thought for a moment that he could see bone white somewhere in that mass of mangled flesh. He knew instantaneously that the wound would cause prolonged suffering. He couldn’t bear to keep his eyes on the wound; he didn’t want to confront himself with the image any longer. He didn’t want to hear sound of Gene cursing to cope with the injury, he didn’t want acknowledge yet more pain and suffering caused on his part.

Corin backed off and fled, putting the injured boy behind him. He looked for another exit, towards less familiar halls. He was running as though the feelings of guilt were actually nipping at his heels.

Asa watched as the pathetic boy ran out of the room. Gene was totally screwed. That cut across his chest would probably get infected if he didn't treat it properly (and, to the best of Asa's knowledge, Gene couldn't treat it properly). Plus, there could be a chance Asa caused serious damage with his beatdown. Gene was probably a dynastic end for his family thanks to Asa's stomping. The thought caused Asa to chuckle a little.

Asa stopped chuckling as soon as he heard the loud banging sound outside. He quickly looked back at the screen. It was a scene of two lovers talking, with nothing violent happening. Asa quickly cursed and ducked behind a seat, taking Gene's bag with him as he hid. He waited a few minutes, but nothing happened. No one came into the theater looking for him. Of course, Asa knew he couldn't stay hidden for long. There was a chance Reluctant Radcliffe shot Gene and left, especially if he wasn't coming back into the theater. Gene might have more valuable possessions on hand. Asa decided to go outside the theater.

Asa slowly crept out, keeping the axe in one hand, his bag around his shoulders, and Gene's bag around one shoulder. He peered out into the lobby. It was completely bare. Asa sighed and stepped out.

"Thank fucking god..." he muttered.

Asa looked around the lobby. It didn't look like there was much of a fight in the lobby. There was no body anywhere. There was some blood on the carpet, but not much. That's when he noticed the two fingers on the ground. Someone lost their fingers in the scuffle. It was pretty surreal. Asa felt a bit sick looking at them. He never imagined seeing something like that in his life, and there it was, before him.

Wait. You can work with this. Show them you don't care about that.

Asa looked around and noticed a camera in the corner of the room. He wondered what the people watching were thinking. Were they cheering him on as he beat the shit out of Gene? Were they wondering if he could figure out what happened in the lobby? Were they starting to change their opinions on him? Asa glared at the cameras. He felt even sicker thinking about the people watching him.

Still, Asa figured he needed to do something now. He was done being in the movie theater, watching shitty programming and dealing with assholes. He needed to move elsewhere, see what he won from Gene, then figure out a real strategy. He had everything he needed to leave. That's when he remembered the fingers on the ground. He bent down and picked them up with his free hand. A slight grin appeared on his face.

Asa walked behind the concession stand, making his way to the popcorn machine. He opened the glass door and tossed the fingers inside. He grabbed a handful of popcorn and dropped it on top of the fingers, trying to slightly obscure them.

"There," he said aloud. "I made the shitty popcorn taste better. I hope the next person who eats this crap chokes on it."

Asa shut the glass door and left the concession stand. He made his way to the exit of the theater and ventured out into the cold. It was time to start anew.
