Nightcrawlers
In the end, he left the town behind and set out, walking along the coastline.

Surely most of the riffraff would be lured there by the non-existent safety signs of civilization promised. But in this situation, no place was safe. Especially not a place with much traffic. For the time being, Art felt little inclination to socialize.
Eventually he reached what looked like a hole in the island. Apparently some sort of harbor for submarines. Art had never really thought about how submarines get maintenance, so finding out they had special pens was a unimportant surprise.
The moon reflected on the ice, giving a little bit of light. If he wanted, he could have used the flashlight. Or the flashlight-function of his smartphone. Or the one of his tablet.
He did neither as he stared down at the cold surface where once submarines had parked.
If Art were to push it into the cold water, would the chimera sink or swim?

Somewhere not too far away, something metallic scraped along the floor.

Despite the pen having a decent bit of backgroundmusic - the howling of the wind, the faint creaking of the ice - the scraping stood out like a sore thumb, making Art listen up. Somehow it didn't sound like a random noise made by the rusty complex.
Something was moving.
Art looked around. Now and then, the wall spotted doors leading further into the pen. Probably to maintenance rooms or quarters for staff. Whatever, the sound was coming from the nearest door.
And it sounded like it came closer.
Carefully, Art sneaked to the door. He had been utterly silent for the past minutes. Therefore, odds were whoever was coming was unaware of his presence.
He opened the door barely wide enough to peak through, a dark corridor greeting him.
A little bit down the hallway, something moved.

A little bit down the hallway, something moved.
The next sounds were much more distinctive.
Footsteps.
Footsteps.

After squinting his eyes, Art made out three figures slowly heading his way. Even from his limited view, their movements seemed... off. Combined with how they walked in complete darkness, he had a feeling this weren't just normal participants.
Well, he would find out sure enough.
Taking a few steps away from the door, Art pulled out his smartphone.
Three seconds later, the bright light of the flashlight-app illuminated the pen.
Five seconds later, the smartphone waas placed on the ground directly in front of the door, the flashlight facing upwards.
And after ten more seconds, Art had retreated far enough in the darkness that he believed himself hidden.
With his weapon at the ready, he looked expectantly at the door.

The cellphone being placed down produced an immediate response. The footsteps halted, and for several seconds, silence once again descended upon the pen.
Then the steps resumed. No longer meandering around, this was a purposeful stride.
For a brief instant, a figure was partially iluminated as it emerged through the doorway. Gaunt. An impression of pallid skin, clothed in fatigues.
The butt of the spear they carried destroyed the smartphone with a thunderous crack.
Darkness returned.

Art remained unmoving, awaiting the next sounds.
Footsteps resumed, faster.
Much faster.
And began to fan out from a singular point.

When the footsteps sped up, there was barely any time before Art pulled the trigger.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The shots were severely lacking in focus. Shooting moving targets in complete darkness was a feat even Art could only dream of, so there was no reason to waste time lining up each shot. He doubted that his inhumman targets would die that easy anyway.
When finding the smartphone, a normal person would have either been confused or picked it up. The only ones who would instantly destroy it were either driven by animalistic instincts or hunters like him. So odds were high he had encountered the third prototype, the so-called Revenants.
While the shots were still echoing across the pen, Art was already running along the water, taking the route he had already scouted earlier. Once he got closer to where the pen opened up into the ocean, he turned around and fired a fourth shot at the figures that were now slightly visible.
He didn't stuck around to see if he had hit anyone.
