The Mouth of Truth

Mayumi had woken up slightly before the announcement, taking a bit of time to do some yoga and meditation to work out the kinks in her neck and the stiffness in her limbs. She had tried sleeping by sitting upright and in a fetal position, but that had proved a bit difficult, so she rolled under one of the benches to try and sleep. She did hear the sounds of someone else coming into the lookout during the night, but Mayumi had remained frozen in place and as silent as she could be. She had been well hidden under the shadows, and while she couldn't exactly make out who was there, the bare legs told her a girl had arrived and left.

Once she felt like she had completed her morning ritual, she went through her bag. She wished she could take a bath, but that was unlikely on this island, and she couldn't waster her bottled water on that. She had to make due with wiping her bare skin with a makeup wipe in her toiletry bag. She had settled into a sitting position on the floor so she could eat some bread when the announcement came on. She ignored her breakfast and grabbed her map, along with a pencil from her pencil case.

She listened carefully as they read the names of the dead, with Mayumi writing the names on the back of her map. Hatagami was still alive, so he apparently had wised up a bit since their encounter. She noted all four of the victims, all boys. Akamatsu and Seto were nerdy boys she didn't interact with that much. She knew Niida was a bit of a creep, so she had stayed clear of him. Sugimura was the biggest surprise, as Mayumi figured a martial arts student like him would be able to handle the game. Something must have happened to take him out early, so Mayumi knew she'd have to be careful.

She then began to note and cross off the danger zones. The lookout was still safe, but it looked like they were targeting some of the manmade structures on the island. There were still plenty of areas she could go, but if she was going to travel, she'd really have to plan ahead of time.

Once the announcement was done, Mayumi looked over the map and began to eat some bread. With the danger zone placements, it would be safe for her to stay on the northern half of the island. She could use the lookout to see where the nearest structures were, those being the lighthouse and the shrine. That would at least help her orient herself before she started her hike.

Mayumi continued to ponder her next steps with each bite of bread. Her gun was still by her side, just to be safe, but for now, she had to decide where to risk her next movement.

Once Mayumi had gotten enough to eat, she had finally settled on a location and a direction.

"Okay," she said to herself. "We're ready to go."

Mayumi packed up everything, keeping her gun out. The lookout had been a nice place for now, but she needed to find a better place to survive the game.

She took one last look from the vista, then made her way down from the peak, keeping a steady pace so she could disappear into the trees once she reached the forest Hatagami disappeared into yesterday.

Just another day to get through until she could reach her dream, and Mayumi was ready to seize it.
