A lot of people thought that Megumi wasn’t the smartest person. Too much of an idealist. Too often day dreaming about this or that thing. Too rebellious-or too interested in rebellious things, anyway. And maybe a bit too interested in things that looked good.

…what, were you expecting her to deny it? Even she had to admit, she was a bit of a ditz.

Though if someone called her stupid? That is when she’d be offended. She wasn’t the smartest, but she had good ideas. Good plans, good thoughts to offer! Heck, she could even be brilliant, even if she had to be the one to call herself that. But secrets aren’t secrets if you go and blab them to anyone you wanted, you know? Then it’s just public information, and that’s definitely not what she wants for those secrets.

Like, how would her parents feel to learn about the DVDs she stashed under her mattress? They hear even a note of Springsteen or Nirvana, and their heads would explode! And no one wants their parents to have exploded heads, that would be gross. Yeah it meant she had to wash her bed sheets herself, but she was pretty sure Daddy was happy about that, so win-win, right?

Or worse, if they found the books she kept in the air vent in her room? Forget their heads exploding, they might just be shut down entirely. Catatonic is the word, Megumi thinks. Especially if they saw Jurassic Park. Reading about guys getting eaten was gross and horrific, but it was so good! And she only had nightmares about velociraptors for a week, so it was totally fine!

It did kinda stink, having all this knowledge and not having anyone to talk to about it. Megumi was sure Kaori would be completely uninterested in any music not related to Junya, and Mizuho…the less said about her interests, the better.

There were some people that might like some of it, but…there was no way she could approach any of them. Too scary or too intimidating. Even if they weren’t scary physically, it would be like approaching The Dictator-maybe they don’t look like they could hurt you, but you feel like you’re about to get tackled just for being a meter or two away from them.

But hey, that’s life as a teenager here in The Republic of Greater East Asia for you. Maybe it wasn’t the best, but it definitely wasn’t the worst. And at least Megumi’s problems were just things like that and normal high school stuff. Once she graduated, it was easy street for her! No more bullies, more chances to make friends, and best of all, the chance to do…more, really. No more sitting in a room for hours on end learning about history and calculus and stuff. She could do whatever she wanted, help people, maybe make a difference in the world!

And really, isn’t that all anyone wants to do?
