Joel Foster

Alcohol and gymnastics don't go together well usually. They still don't, but he's gonna try it anyway.

Joel Foster

#1

Post by AnimeNerd »

Name: Joel Ozias Foster
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Grade: 12
Hobbies and Interests: Gymnastics, cooking, babysitting, drinking

Gift: Luck Charm
Power Details: Joel appears to be capable of manipulating probabilities, to the point that he appears to choose whether or not people have good luck or bad luck. In reality, he is able to telepathically influence others into making micro-corrections that can either make them do things better or worse. This, in turn, creates a small aura around them that can give the same effect to others, creating what is seen as good or bad luck based on the manipulated person's own decisions as well as the world around them.
Limitations and Drawbacks: Joel is unable to use his Gift on himself, and as such must rely on his own skills rather than his Gift. He must have a good amount of focus to use his Gift, because while he has a great amount of practice, assuring that the effects are positive or negative requires active attention rather than leaving the action in the back of his mind. This, in turn, means that he is only able to affect one or two people at a time, and even splitting his focus on two different people can overwork his Gift, giving him intense headaches. Finally, while Joel is able to choose whether or not the effects of his Gift are positive or negative, he is unable to directly choose what decisions are made and therefore unable to predict the exact outcomes of using his Gift, instead vaguely pushing people into making good or bad decisions.

Appearance: Joel stands at exactly 4’ 10” and weighs 125 lbs. What he lacks in height he mainly makes up for in muscle, his body being very muscular due to his gymnastics, to the point of having a six pack. His skin is a warm ivory color, which is matched with light brown hair, brushed down and left unstyled if not covered by a hat. Joel’s face is oval shaped, paired with a medium sized hero nose, round hazel eyes with noticeable bags, slightly bushy eyebrows, thin lips, and a small bit of stubble to form a five o’clock shadow, purposely grown and left alone so that he looks older.

Joel has a tendency to dress casually for most occasions, no matter the circumstances, as he has a general disinterest in fashion for the most part, at most just wearing things his siblings suggest he should wear. On the day of the trip, he wore a black t-shirt with a white four point diamond design on the front, a dark gray hoodie left unzipped, a pair of light blue jeans, white ankle socks, and black slip-on Vans with a pattern of white five point stars. At the insistence of Sasha, he also wore a black beanie with white spots she had knitted.

Background:
  • Joel was born October 11th, 2003, in Bend, Oregon. The first child of Heath and Jemma Foster, a veterinarian and surgeon respectively, he would not be the last. The upper-middle class couple would have five more children; fifteen-year-old Martin, twelve-year-old Fox, six-year-old Sasha, and twin one-year-olds Ace and Olive.
  • Joel had a strong interest in rolling and tumbling when he was small, which both his parents took note of. Wanting to prepare him in case he keeps this interest as he grows up, they signed him up for gymnastics classes at two years old. While he’s grown out of the beginner’s class, he still regularly practices gymnastics and participates in competitions.
  • There was some difficulty in recognizing Joel’s Gift when it first manifested. It was first suspected to be an aura of good luck, as Martin’s birth went extremely well once Heath arrived with Joel, as well as several other operations at the hospital that night. After a childish feud with Heath led to several accidents at home, including nearly falling down the stairs, the parents sought out a specialist and had Joel professionally examined.
  • Due to both of them having time consuming jobs, Heath and Jemma tend to be out of the house more often than not. Joel, being the oldest, was the one the parents trusted most, and as such was the one looking after the younger kids the most. This has led him to learn a number of useful life skills, such as cooking and first aid, the former of which he greatly enjoys.
  • While Joel loves his family, he finds it stressful to be in charge of his siblings so often, resenting his parents somewhat for making him a ‘third parent’ in his own words. He attempts to relieve the stress at times by drinking from his parents’ liquor cabinet. While he has avoided being discovered by his parents, both Martin and Fox are aware of his habit.
  • Joel regularly uses his Gift in a variety of ways. When babysitting his siblings he uses it to make sure their activities are less likely to end badly, Sasha rarely pricking herself when knitting and Fox never breaking a bone when attempting parkour. When in school he has a tendency to use his Gift on people he dislikes, the principal tripping on air when near him.
  • Joel used his Gift during a gymnastics competition once, believing he could get away with it, but due to it causing an injury he chose to never do so again.
  • Academically Joel is rather average, regularly getting Cs and Bs for grades, the only class not following that trend being physical education, which he has an A in.
  • Joel’s plans after graduation is to attend cooking school, hoping to become a professional chef.
Personality: Joel is a reserved person, usually acting aloof near classmates as a way to avoid conflict when possible, and when forced into it, he prefers to let his Gift speak for him. People can get through that front, however, and when doing so find that Joel can easily be described as a jerk with a heart of gold, able to deliver biting commentary on the fly but acting as a caring older brother when needed.

Heya AnimeNerd! Joel's looking pretty good, there are just a few things I want to touch base on with regards to his power:
Power Details: Joel appears to be capable of manipulating probabilities, to the point that he appears to choose whether or not people have good luck or bad luck. In reality, he is able to subtly telepathically manipulate their decision making and abilities, either for the positive or the negative. This, in turn, creates a small aura around them that can give the same effect to others, creating good or bad luck based on the manipulated own decisions as well as the world around them.
First: "based on the manipulated own decisions" needs to be "based on the manipulated person's own decisions".

Next: with regards to how his power actually works, a few questions immediately spring to my mind:

1. How does Joel know what decisions would result in a positive or negative outcome (good or bad luck)?
2. To what extent can he manipulate other's decisions? Are they aware of this manipulation in any way?
3. How much control does Joel really have over other's decision making? Does he consciously know what he's making people decide?

All of these relate to the biggest point of contention for me with how the power is worded: right now it feels too much like uninhibited mind control, which could be easily break the game (from being too powerful) and the RP (from encouraging god-modding). Keeping in mind the core idea of the power (subtly manipulating others into having what we would perceive as "good" or "bad" luck), I have a potential solution to all of the above:

Make it so Joel isn't aware of how he's actually manipulating others, or what the outcome of his manipulations would be, and instead make it explicitly a sort of vague direction that he's pushing them in. As an example, using his background, if he wanted to prevent Fox from breaking a bone, he could exert a positive (good luck) pressure on his brother, causing Fox to naturally make less risky decisions (but not necessarily guaranteeing that he'd avoid breaking a bone).

This might have been your initial intention with the power, but that needs to be made explicit! Otherwise the implications aren't super great, and not something I'm comfortable approving.

The currently listed limitations are all good, though, I just want more of them using what I said above. I'll leave how exactly you want to work all that in and how you will word it entirely to you. Or, alternatively, if you think you have a better idea, feel free to message me and we can try to work something out.

As for the rest of the profile, this is the only thing that stuck out:
Joel was born June 21st, 2003, in Bend, Oregon.
So, if Joel entered the school system like a regular kid as the age of five, he would have graduated as of spring 2021, while the abduction takes place in October of 2021. Three ways to fix this: either make his birthday sometime in October instead, bump his age down to 17 and make his birth year 2004, or include a bullet point about him either entering school late or getting held back (for whatever reason).

--

That's all! Post back here when you have that done and I'll give Joel another look. :3

This iterations is a lot more clear! Just one more thing:
Limitations and Drawbacks: Joel is unable to use his Gift on himself, and as such must rely on his own skills rather than his Gift. He must have a good amount of focus to use his Gift, because while he has a great amount of practice, assuring that the effects are positive or negative requires active attention rather than leaving the action in the back of his mind. This, in turn, means that he is only able to affect one or two people at a time, and even splitting his focus on two different people can overwork his Gift, giving him intense headaches. Finally, while Joel is able to choose whether or not the effects of his Gift are positive or negative, he is unable to directly choose what decisions are made, instead vaguely pushing people into making good or bad decisions.
Since he can't choose what decisions are made, wouldn't that also mean that he isn't able to actually predict the exact outcomes of using his power? I feel like that merits mentioning! Perhaps add it after "unable to directly choose what decisions are made" to keep with the flow?
