O19: Examine

Open

On the northernmost cliffs of the island, just outside a rainforest clearing consisting of small, nondescript huts, there stands a large, multi-layered circle consisting of small local statues, local symbols, and other assorted items believed to have belonged to shamans of a distant past. However, unlike every other area of the island, this area shows signs of recent touch - faint drag marks surround each statue, and the grass beneath them does not match the grass anywhere else on the island, as though the ground was recently excavated, then planted with grass not native to the region. However, if one were to travel any further north of the circle, they would find that there does exist something native to the island - a long, steep drop onto sharp jagged rocks, sticking out of the ocean.

It was an interesting scenario they found themselves in, and although Dominik still wasn't fully sure what was going on, he was glad had encountered friendly people. He had no idea how to use the gun he had been given and didn't want to have to learn. Guns were for gangsters or soldiers and he was neither. But at least he had something to ward off any aggressors he supposed.

The girl who had arrived also spoke Spanish, and going off her accent she was a native speaker like he was. She called the pamphlet she carried useless trash before registering and responding to their waves. She was also rolling a zorb around, which was certainly another strange detail to add to the pile.

"¡Hola, Rubí! Did you wake up with that ball?”

A grin crossed Archie’s lips when Jia Li confirmed that she was up to join in his cause, even if it was still a vague one. It meant that, even if he did end up wandering around the island, aimlessly tilting at windmills in his attempts to strike back at their captors, he wouldn’t have to do so alone.

Giving the girl an eager nod, Archie’s focus shifted towards the others in the Circle. Dominik was preoccupied with the new arrival, who had introduced herself as Rubi, and greeted her in Spanish before asking about the ball, not saying much in response to Archie’s offer. Rubi, on the other hand, made herself known by explaining the large ball in her possession, apparently given to her by their captors.

“I’m Archie, got a binder full of disks. Gotta say, think you might’ve won out in comparison.” He answered Rubi’s introduction with his own, indicating the bag slung over his shoulder which held said binder.

Archie paused for a moment, considering his situation. He wanted to get moving soon, since there was only so much that he could learn about their surroundings by remaining around the Circle. After all, the area he’d woken up in seemed rather odd, and unlikely to be reflective of the environment as a whole. His initial impression, considering the differing groundcover and seemingly untouched indigenous structures, was that the setup was artificial, either some abandoned tourist trap or something constructed for the purpose of this fucked up competition. However, he could know nothing for certain without further explanation.

It would’ve been quite possible to set off with just Jia Li in his company, but he knew that there was strength in numbers, and that it’d probably be a good move to keep as many people out of the game’s proceedings as possible.

“Probably moving on soon. I’m thinking it’s a good idea to get a better picture of what the layout of this place is before making any big moves. Gotta know what we’re dealing with and all. If you’re interested in trying to get the fuck off of here, you’re welcome to come. Could always use more hands, or maybe a big plastic ball.” He made an offer once more, giving a shrug.

Archie grinned and nodded. Jia Li nodded, but didn't smile. Having an ally in this situation was great, even if she didn't intend for it to be permanent, but she didn't think she would be emoting too much while here. If the people behind this were anything like her, they wanted this for the reactions. The crying, the fear, the misery, etc.

If they wanted her to react, then she'd give as little as possible.

The girl, apparently Rubí, got closer and more or less confirmed that her little bubble was indeed her weapon-at the very least, Jia Li doubted anyone else would wake up with a random giant plastic bubble.

Another Spanish speaker. It was good to see her skills were coming in handy, but she couldn't help but worry about the others. There were at least twenty-nine people on the island, if her backpack was anything to go by, and no guarantee that all of them would speak a language she spoke.

Jia Li could only hope she either never ran into them, or something could be worked out between them.

Archie mentioned moving, and Jia Li realized that they-or at least she-didn't have much idea of the island's layout. She thought she'd seen a map in the backpack, but had been more focused on finding her 'weapon' and hadn't thought about it much at the time. Seemed as good a time as ever to bring it out.

She took off a strap and let the other fall halfway down her arm, the pack left hanging at her left elbow. She unzipped the pack with the other hand, grabbed the paper labeled with their location, and pulled it out. She zipped the pack back up before having it rest against her back again.

"Jia Li," she said to the girl, but not giving eye contact to her as she scrolled over the island they were on. "It's probably best if we go to one of these two places." She showed off the areas she pointed to; the farm house and the fishing village. "It would be good to keep a roof over our heads, and I'd rather not have to sleep on the ground later if I can help it."

The situation was horrible enough. She didn't want to have bugs crawling on her in her sleep.

The boy with the gun said "Hola." Soraya slid over to him with a large step so that they were standing shoulder to shoulder.

"¿De dónde eres, mi nuevo amigo que eres como tren?" a bit quieter than she had been speaking a moment ago. Punctuating the last part of her sentence, she bumped him slightly with her hip. She brushed some hair away from her face and behind her ear, using the motion to discretely look at the gun.

Ji Li spoke up and proposed that the group go to either the farmhouse or the fishing village.

Si el grupo van al granja, es possible que la gente que hablé con hay allí todavía y si sí, este grupo van a saber que estuvé mintiendo sobre mi nombre.

"I think the fishing village is a better choice," she said. "I passed by the farm and it sounded like there was fighting. Whoever won might still be there."

If the group goes to the farm house, it's possible that the people I spoke to are still there and if so, then this group will know I lied about my name.

"Uh er Belize," Dominik replied, more sheepishly than before as Rubi focused her attention on him. He didn't give his hometown, as he didn't think it was that relevant, plus there was a good chance she wouldn't have heard of it. Even with his awkwardness, he couldn't stop himself sneaking a look at Rubi. She was on the shorter side but seemed muscular, more so than he was. He also liked the way she had her hair styled.

Archie and Jia Li's continuing conversation pulled his attention away from her though, and back to the situation at hand. The discussion was of where they would travel to next. Both of them seemed to be operating under the assumption that they would be traveling as a group or were too polite to say they wouldn't be, which suited Dominik fine. He didn't want to deal with the potential awkwardness and also wanted to stick with people, even if he was the one with the more powerful position thanks to his gun.

He didn't intend to use the gun at all, he was just glad that everything was proceeding in a friendly manner. Rubi brought up that there might have been fighting at the farm and suggested they go to the fishing village instead, which made sense to Dominik. If someone had already been violent or in a fight he didn't want to risk them potentially being aggressive if they arrived as a group.

"Fishing village sounds good to me."

Archie hadn’t been planning to seek out a specific destination when he suggested moving on, since any location outside of the Circle would better his understanding of the state this island was supposedly in. However, Jia Li and the others seemed to have settled on the Fishing Village as a destination, which suited him well enough. Hell, a place like that might even get him supplies that would help in getting help or getting the damn collars off.

Rubi had said something else, or asked something, to Dominik in Spanish. Really gave the impression that Archie was kind of the odd one out here, being the only one here that wouldn’t be able to understand, but he’d have to let that go. Petty suspicion of the other victims out here distracted from the real enemy.

“Alright, looks like we’ve got an agreement, then.” Archie spoke up once again, giving a nod to the others as he adjusted his pack into a position that’d be a bit more comfortable for the journey.

“I’ll take point, if that ain’t too much of a problem.” He offered, turning and making his way to the edge of the treeline, where his gaze focused in on another of the cameras that seemed to focus right in on him.

It might’ve just been his imagination, or more likely just happened because he was the person closest to it. Still, Archie felt his face slip into a grimace. The fuckers that did this were not going to win. They could sit back and gawk at him and everyone else, but he’d do whatever it took to see them defeated.

Realizing that he must’ve looked odd, having stopped so abruptly, Archie started up again, departing the area without another word and hoping that at least some of the others followed after.

Well, choosing the location they would travel to was easier than Jia Li had expected. Rubí apparently heard fighting at the farm house, and even with a four on one fight, they only had one actual weapon between them. Best to just skip the risk and go to the safe place.

Archie was volunteering to take the lead, and Jia Li wasn't interested in arguing with the idea. She didn't think anything would happen to them when making their way to the village, but on the off-chance something did happen, it was good to have someone else at the front and potentially take the injury.

But, as usual, she didn't say that. She just nodded her head, folded the map back up, and stuck it in the pocket of her jacket. "No arguments here."

And she followed the boy to the trees. She stared and could help but raise an eyebrow at his stopping, but chose not to question it.

She didn't question if Rubí and Dominik would follow. If they weren't interested in traveling with them, they would've kept their mouths shut when she spoke up about locations to travel to.

They would be a not-so-merry band of four, making their way through Hell. That was what she expected, anyway.

"Sounds fine to me, " she said, replying Archie. "Let me deflate this thing so we can move faster," she said, pointing to the ball.

Ella no estaba segura sobre blancito como jefe.

Pero ella miré a Dominik y eschuché de donde fue y sienté algo. Ella sienté como quizás el y ella fueron los gemelos sagrados del Popol Vuh.

She wasn't sure about the white guy as the boss.

But she looked at Dominik and heard where he was from and felt something. She felt like maybe they were the sacred twins from the Book of the People.

We don't have time to explain this fully right now since we have to get moving with the group, but I'll expand more on that later. For now. Free translation incoming:

And so they departed.

While Dominik still didn't feel good about his situation he was at least comforted by the fact that Rubi was a native Spanish speaker, it meant he wasn't the only one and that there was a chance there would be others as well. Not that he had any problem with Archie or Jia Li, but he felt more comfortable with Rubi's presence.

Regardless they had all decided to move away from the strange circle they had woken up by and head towards civilization, which suited him fine. So as the others all set off he went with them, conscious of the weight of his gun and hopeful that he wouldn't have to make use of it.
