Dude Fortifi(v)ed Gaiden: Heavenly Bottle Ships of Fortified Souls

Day 2, 9:17 PM | Private, paging Jilly Fields

A sight likely familiar to any students who have spent time in the Everglades, this tour boat has seating in a rectangular arrangement around a series of thick panes of glass at the bottom, providing a view of the ocean below. A roof provides shade and a measure of cover from sight at a distance. The glass panes have been reinforced and will not shatter easily or in unison, but just in case this boat has been secured to its neighbors with significantly greater attention than the norm, and should remain mostly above water even if the bottom is blown out.

Undisturbed for the better part of a day, the glass-bottomed boat floated triumphantly in the water at the edge of nightfall. The glass hull remained intact, offering an unobscured view of the fish swimming below. The relative lack of corpses floating in the water had left the composition of the local fauna relatively unchanged, making the way for the area's native sting-rays and catfish to gingerly weave around thick clouds of silvery mackerel in the dusty depths.

The first to come to occupy the boat in its re-opened state stumbled in shortly after the lift of the area's curfew, ducking between the crates and barrels of cover that littered the jetty approach to the boat's open door. She grabbed the teal metal railing on the side of the boat, pulled herself up onto the metal deck and stepped inside. With the point of her harpoon she entered the passenger deck swept the empty interior, taking heavy intimidating steps as she walked from one end of the ship to the other and back again, establishing command over her surroundings. The hull of the ship creaked softly under the gradually lightening steps of her patrol until midway through her third lap she planted on her left toe and stopped. Apparently satisfied that the boat was empty, Mariko put her bag down on a bench and sat down on the opposite side.

There were no lights beneath the glass. The waters were dark and impossible, their contents unknown, hidden by a curtain of slowly rippling waves. The placidity of the waves did little to mask the noise of plastic crinkling as Mariko unwrapped her dried squid and began to eat. Ever watchful, she turned her head to look from door to door in the dark. There were no lamps on at all in the glass ship; light could pass through it, but could not come from within.

Mariko lowered her head beneath the side window so that she could just see the tip of the smiling moon shining in the water and nothing above. This was a perfect place to hide—small, nestled closely between two other boats, inconspicuous in the larger waters. Like a cloud in the ocean-spray the boat would float on into the night undisturbed, and Mariko could get her much needed Long Rest.

[Mariko Whitney continued from Investigate!]

But the night was still young. She kept her flashlight in her bag. With her back turned to the ferry and the cruise ship there were no other lights to contend with, and her dark vision could switch over in peace. The shapes in the dark were clear enough. There was one tall rectangle on one side of the room, thick wood with a plated glass window, and another opposite of the same composition. The door she opened to enter the room was not particularly heavy. Extrapolating from that and assuming each door was of the same make, as they seemed to be, then each had a nautical heft and weighting to contend with the shifting seas but neither took much strength to push open. She would rely on the changing shapes to tell her when and where to point and shoot.

Somewhere far away a gun went off, the periodicity of the echo conjuring the image of an empty casing skipping like a pebble across the still waters.

The late-night waves of the ocean kept bobbing to and fro, much like Larry right about now. A whole day wandering, a whole day wasted. Story of his life.

Couldn't find Alaska. Completely lost Ivan. Didn't even have a mentor anymore.

He maybe always felt a little lonely, but now he truly felt alone. At least it was pretty. And he didn't come across any dead bodies, so hey, maybe it wasn't too awful bad.

Sigh. Who was he kidding. Some kinda knight he was. This whole thing was wack in every sense of the word, and he never took that lightly.

It was getting real late, and hunkering down for the night again seemed more and more appealing. But where? He considered doubling back to the submarine; it seemed like maybe the safest space, but... well... that was maybe too much of a confined space for his tastes. He could head back to the boat from before, maybe Alaska was back and wondering where he went. But that was probably a sunk cost at this point, better to just keep moving in case what Ivan said about the guerilla team of kids was true. Plus, the further he stayed away from Seo-yun, the better. She definitely sounded like she came to play. Scary stuff.

Anyway, Larry figured it was in his best interest to just keep walking. Going forward was about the best thing anyone could probably do given... well, everything. At least he had Sir Wilson the Buckler and also this table leg he snapped off of one of the boats. Definitely wished he had a real sword, but soldiers probably had to make due with what they had even during the Crusades. Probably.

And so Sir Laurence dragged his feet along with wooden jetty, up until he came upon a certain boat. A big, dark boat.

There was someone there. He couldn't get a good look exactly, but it was someone. Looked like a girl, though he couldn't be exactly sure. Maybe it was-?

He got closer to the boat, got closer to the door into the main cabin. But as he went to grab the handle...

He backed away. Something about this didn't feel right. And not the fun "didn't feel right". Didn't feel left, either. But at the same time... well, some external force just compelled him. But it was good to just take a moment and make sure he was prepared for anything.

Mariko spun around to face the intruder. She had taken a chance on a coin toss and it flipped wrong. They'd come in through the door opposite where she was aiming at. Mariko couldn't tell who they were in the darkness but the moonlight cast a tall silhouette against the wall behind them.

Her finger hesitated on the trigger of the harpoon gun. She hadn't exactly expected the encounter to begin so politely. Maybe it was worth hearing out what he had to say if he was so wiling to alert her to his presence. But he could also have just said it because he was just as surprised by her as she was by him, and thus his words were less of a pleasantry and more of a reflex.

"Get back!" she yelled, lining up the silhouette in the harpoon's iron sights. Tied to the end of the harpoon was a length of rope, provided with the gun, that she had secured around the back leg of an adjacent seating bench. She could use it to reel him in and tie him up, render him disarmed and out of fighting commission, without much bloodshed apart from a leg or maybe arm that she'd have to hit him in first. That, or he could take the easy way out; the door behind him.

"I'm going to count down from five, and when I get to zero, you better have turned around and left this—my boat."

Deep breaths, now.

"Five."

"Four."

Larry shot both hands up at the harpoon gun being aimed at him. The table leg slipped out from his hand, clunking against his side and onto the dark deck of the boat.

Mistakes may have been made. He looked left and right and down at the barrel(?) of the harpoon gun thing. He tried to take a step back, but at the same time he didn't think this girl was thinking too rationally; if she really wanted to shoot him, it wasn't like she could do it while his back was turned anyway.

"He-hey!" Larry talked over her countdown, though it was more like shouting and stumbling over her but you know what he meant. "I'm not- not... hurt you. Ca-calm down."

He wasn't leaving. The boy was still standing there talking, his mouth runneth over, backing against the wall, but not disappearing through it. It took everything she had not to squeeze the trigger and pop him then and there. She consoled herself with the image of it being less of a gun with popping bullets and more of a piercing arrowhead type deal. It wouldn't be neat, tidy or pretty, not unless she got him through a major artery. Mariko adjusted the weight of her gun and leaned up from her perch, pressing in, closing the distance between herself and the interloper.

"Three," she continued, "Two."

His weapon falls clattering to the floor. Mariko didn't make that happen, but she knows that it looks like she did. In an instant she recognizes the image, both how it looked above and on the ground. She tries not to let the swell of pride take her, and yet in it flows, coursing through her veins and loosening her hold on the gun. Despite this recognition—or perhaps because of it—she finally raises the harpoon aloft, steadies it, aims,

"One."

and fires.

Larry threw his hands up in a Hail Mary. He looked back at the exit and back at the girl with the harpoon gun as she continued her countdown. "Wh-wait! Stop!"

Suddenly it felt like the world warped around him.

Mariko feels the miss before she sees it. Glimmering like an arrowhead, the harpoon careens some slim inches off-target and sails narrowly above Larry's head. The rope line follows trailing behind, falling limply around him as the metal head ricochets against the wall at an acute angle and lodges into the floor. Mariko's shoulder jerks back as the kick of the shot ripples through her entire body and courses into the floor. She takes a stumbling step backwards to regain her footing. Still loose, the tied-off rope whips against the leg of the bench behind Mariko. Another step backwards and she might find herself tripping over it or worse; she could wind up ensnared, caught in her own line.

She finds her balance before that can happen. Larry, doe-faced, stands frozen in the moonlight. The rope around the gun keeps Mariko anchored but also stuck. With furtive fingers Mariko twists the screw fastening the tuning fork prongs of the rope mount, spinning it in her fingers and pulling it at the same time. In jagged starts and stops the puny screw jangles loose. The rope falls slack and sprawls into dust-ridden corners of the floor.

Her eye follows it only partway down before she something else. Across the aisle is her bag, still open, with two harpoons still inside.

Knees bent, Mariko draws down, ducking between the benches and weaving across the glass aisle. She lunges forward for her bag, brings her hand down atop it and rummages inside—

(finds it, nearly puts the point of it through the palm of her hand—)

—and pulls back into the aisle with another harpoon, planting on her back foot.

Gunmoke peals away from the barrel of the rifle as Mariko feeds it with new iron. She points it towards Larry—holds it lower, squarer, slightly away from herself. Mariko huffs, her breath like hot steam as it billows and mingles with the gray saltpeter and briny night breeze.

Then, screaming herself blind, Mariko takes off charging down the middle of the boat with the shining harpoon point forward, ripping through the stillness of the air.

Mariko heard him.

But it was not him that she was pushing through. Her harpoon was lodged in some unfamiliar spleen, cut through curtains of fleshy mold and sinew. With her eyes closed she could imagine the guts that her sharpness found as Seo-Yun's—that when she pulled the harpoon from the body the blood that spewed forth was Gabriela's—that the body and the blood belonged to Ivan, and to Kamille, and to her as well.

Tossing the harpoon aside, Mariko reaches forth with both hands and grabs Larry's falling body by the shoulders, holding him up from the floor.

His wet blood, seeping through the front of his shirt, dampened her side as he fell into her, sagging with wheezy, faltering breaths.

And beneath the both of them there ran a constant dribbling—repetitive, in regular intervals—of cherry red blood onto the glass window.

The light was leaving him.

Mariko held on.

She was here. Larry would die on his feet.

Mariko does not see the light leave Larry. Her head hangs limply over his shoulder as his senses fail and the death rattle calls him from his shell. Her eyes are pointed at the door he used to enter his final room. Somehow, it closed behind him.

But she does feel him die. His weight begins to sag against her, falling forward, slipping further down the length of the harpoon. His limp arms brush her sides, taken by his momentum like streamers rippling from the back of a kite in flight.

It's too much to bear for her. She puts her free hand on him, pushes him away and swings a large couple of step back. The push isn't enough to change his direction—Larry teeters for a bit, finding mindless balance before the front of his face pulls him again forward, this time to the floor.

With a soggy thump Larry falls splayed against the glass. Where blood trickled seconds ago now there is a seeping, a torrent of crimson from the gored hole in his side. His cheek and nose are pressed against the window's cold surface. Mariko watches Larry's face for a moment, polarized through the glint of a threatening tear, as his breath does not fog it up.

Only then does she take in the grim tableau she just made—the hanging ropes and the crosscut moonlight, the swarming school of fish below and the creaking tin roof above, the breathing air still in her and the hissing release of gas left to him.

Instinctively she moves away, putting rows of chairs between herself and Larry. There are less aisles than she expects between him and her bag. Running down the middle, pulling her point through the air, she must have drawn the sides of the boat closer together.

The smell hits just as she makes it to her bag. If she stole a glance back at her handiwork, Mariko would see traces of brackish brown bubbling up and mingling with the pooling blood around Larry. Void swirls of unfinished digestion foam over and coagulate on the surface of the wound, threatening to clot it over in a mixture of blood, pus, and chyme.

Mariko doesn't look. Can't. She draws her bag up and carries her harpoon under her arm and turns with her back to the body, never to look upon it again, hurrying to put distance between herself and him—it—before her spew joins his in blocking the submerged ocean view.

She makes it outside and throws up. She doesn't think about the reversed taste of squid. Mariko barely processes it. The current will pull her vomit underneath the boat. Some of it will run against the other side of the glass before the ocean pulls it under and in salience purifies it into water. That is what it will do, where it will go. Mariko is bound for elsewhere. She stumbles silently across the jetty, preoccupied by a new firing of ideas at the back of her brain, gleaming with energy, focus, a rushing swell of—it's not good and not bad, just a feeling. Unmistakable. Tantalizing. Addictive.

It's the feeling of levelling up.
