It all happened so slowly

Open!

The cabaret is rather simplistic in design, having only one large stage where entertainers perform for the denizens seated at the number of tables. The instruments, sound amplifiers, and turntables left around the stage have frost on them, and the rest of the area has a small margin of snow and slick ice spread about.

Lily's breath caught in her chest as he turned around and ran towards her. Her arms slackened and her bag dropped from her shoulder seconds before he caught her up in his arms. A dam inside her broke as he crushed her to him and she broke down completely, her tears dampening the fabric beneath her face. Her arms reached up and held him tight, feeling his solid, comforting body beneath her fingers. She closed her eyes and for a moment, she felt like she was home.

A scathing, sarcastic voice floated towards them from the stage. She lowered her arms, shooting a glare at the source. Turning back to Dougie, she felt his hands on her arms, checking her over, seeing if she was hurt. For the first time, she really looked at him. He towered over her, like always. He had his bulky green hoodie and customary purple beanie on, so she couldn't see much of his skin, but he didn't seem to be injured.

She looked up into his face. His expression was that of mingled worry and joy. His hands gripped her shoulders, and his eyes found hers.

She heard him murmur “Thank god...” and for the first time since this nightmare started, she felt her mouth curling into a small, genuine smile. There were so many things she wanted to tell him, so many things she wished she could say. All she could do was smile. “Hey,” he said.

She chuckled slightly, reaching a hand up to wipe away her tears. “Hey.”

As she lowered her hand, she caught sight of something blue on Dougie's wrist. She glanced at it, and her heart plummeted. It was a light blue bandana. Fresh tears stung at her eyes, and she closed them, biting her lip in an attempt to force back her emotions. Why couldn't she have a moment, just one moment of happiness that wasn't marred by worry or grief or death? Why was that too much to ask?

She kept her eyes closed for a few seconds before opening them, trying not to look at Dougie. It hurt; she'd only just found him, and now she couldn't even look at him. She couldn't have that conversation, though, not now.

More out of a need to switch her train of thought than out of any actual interest, she looked over at the stage. “Who are they?”

A voice whispers silently from Amir's collar.

"And people call me a dick. Look, people cope in different ways, and none are really better then any other. I'm glad you're not a complete bitch, but pratice the ways of the bitch, and learn to shut up when you need to."

Within seconds the two were embracing and sharing hellos. It was clear they were familiar with each other. Very familiar. Amir piped up behind them with a rude comment, but she chose to ignore it.

After some continued tenderness between the two, the girl peeked her head over Dougie's shoulder and inquired as to who exactly Isabel and Amir were.

Isabel answered in turn.

"I'm Isabel, and this is uh... yeah he can introduce himself I guess." She said pointing her thumb back at Amir. She gave the girl in Dougie's arms a little grin and stood up.

Smoothing back her dark strip of hair, she glanced back at Amir, to make sure he was in the same spot and looked down at Damion's face. His eyes were still open, and his hair was frosted. She swallowed hard and recomposed herself.

"I'm... friendly."

Amir tipped his head back.

To say that he didn't get the moment would be wrong. He understood it right enough, in some of his more people-fixated filming, he'd written similar. That was fake though, scripted. This was the real deal, two people so desperately relieved to find one another that there were tears and all.

And maybe that was what Amir didn't 'get'. He had his friends, and he didn't think he'd greet any of them like that. Perhaps he just wasn't enough of a true ~romantic~ to get it.

He knew that he should let them have the moment for what it was... and maybe he would have done if he wasn't quietly trying not to flip his own shit every other moment. Cutting jokes was how he'd always kept himself calm. Did it when filming, did it when acting. Always. They didn't deal with that, then he supposed they'd go their own way, or kick his ass.

Amir's collar mumbled to him again. Douchebag mission control McGoo. All right. At least this time he had something semi useful to say. Which Amir was probably going to blatantly disregard but he hadn't got that 'Space Station SOTF' DVD for his birthday when he was 15 either.

Lily took a closer look at the people on the stage. One was a short, chubby girl; the other was a tall guy with curly hair whose ethnicity she couldn't quite place. The girl introduced herself awkwardly, looking back at the guy on the stage. Her eyes then drifted downwards, and Lily saw with a jolt that she was looking at the corpse of a boy. Isabel said in a hesitating voice that she was friendly.

The boy with the curly hair then piped up with his name and another stupid joke. Lily stared at them incredulously. What kind of psychos had Dougie landed himself with? Amir seemed to think that SOTF was some sort of joke, and for all Lily knew, Isabel had killed the boy laying next to them.

She glanced back at the way she'd come. She thought that Michael would have caught up with them by now. There was nobody there. Her heart sank even further. She tried to remember the last place she'd seen him. The only place she could really remember was the tower. She'd just assumed that he'd been following her. Maybe he'd peeled off to go look for Valerie? Oh god, she'd lost both of them. She just couldn't do anything right.

She couldn't afford to wallow in guilt, however. She and Dougie were still in the presence of two potential psychopaths, one of which was holding a gigantic trident.

Turning towards Dougie, she whispered quietly, barely moving her lips to avoid being overheard. "Um, Dougie? You want to get out of here? Like, now?"

If Dougie thought hard enough - took enough time - he may have found the words he was looking for.

He may have reached out, told Isabel that it wasn't her fault - that she couldn't let the game get to her. That they were all slated to die, and if she didn't give herself a hard shake, she was going to lose herself long before her life was threatened.

He may have yelled at Amir, told him to take a step back and realize that he wasn't a contestant on some game show where being comedic had value. Funny people, happy people, still bled as easily as those who soldiered on, carried themselves high. He may have asked him to wait for the first announcements - then give himself a good, hard slap and see how funny this all was when people he knew and interacted with were reduced to a fucking name in a speech.

He may have offered words of comfort to Lily, squeezed her shoulder, told her that things weren't going to be okay, but they could be more okay than not if they stuck together. He may have told her that he wasn't going to let anything happen to her - that she wouldn't fall victim to this like Jewel had.

If he thought long enough, he may have said some, or all of this.

But Dougie didn't think. He didn't speak. He didn't even look at the group.

Just nodded tightly. Offered a half wave.

Taking Lily's hand, he led her away.

Dougie, seemingly mesmerized by the girl in front of him gave a halfhearted wave and led her away by the hand. Isabel was dumbfounded as the boy left wordlessly.

He was gone. Why did he go?

Why did he leave her so easily?

She sunk to her knees and glanced once more at Damion's lifeless face. His lips were parted slightly and purple. His eyes were still staring.

Did she have anyone left to rely on?

Amir was still behind her, hopefully not planning anything with that trident of his. She clenched her fists and stood up to face him.

Crossing her arms, she could only state the obvious.

"They left." she huffed.

She couldn't tell if she was angry or sad. A little of both maybe, but it didn't matter. She barely knew the guy. There was no reason to get so attached so easily.

She let her hands fall back to her sides and into her pockets, to warm her numbed fingertips.

"Man, I don't know what to do anymore." She said, secretly hoping Amir would tell her exactly what to do and how.

He wasn't going to though. The most she could do was play along with Amir's sick jokes and hope he'd warm up to her enough to not run her through with a trident.

Was it something he said-

Well let's be real, it was pretty much definitely something he'd said.

Clearly, with their own little lovestory going on, there wasn't much room for gallows humour, though that, in Amir's educated opinion, was their own fault for taking him too seriously.

Never a good idea.

That left him with Isabel and a dead body. That felt like the start of some kind of surrealist comedy sketch, but nope. Dead, dead as dead. Amir thought that maybe he should be a bit more freaked out that there was just a corpse laying right there, but seeing someone shot in the head right in front of him had taken the edge off that kind of shock a bit.

"Well. What you gotta do is stay safe, find your friends... or your teammates, and then go ahead and not die," Amir raised a finger. "That last part especially. Don't do the dying thing."

He paused.

"I'm gonna get along going with that bit. You can come with if you want, if you're finding a particular lack of streetwise filmmakers turned death avoiders in your life," he shrugged, slung the trident across his shoulders, hooking it with both arms.

Then, Amir walked.

A voice echoes from Isabel's collar.

"I reckon y'all might want to take him up on that. This hasn't been a great start, but with a little faith you can pull through. No use cryin' over spilt milk."

The sudden voice from her collar made her jump. The voice was irritating and the guy it belonged to was also irritating. Still, her mentor was right.

She looked up to where Amir was standing moments ago but he was gone.

Letting out a huff of frustration she put her bandana back over her mouth and pulled her hands into her sleeves.

This was going to be a long day.

She walked in the direction she assumed Amir was located and kept an eye out for any deranged killers. She heard another voice, listing off the names of dead kids. She blocked it out and made it background noise. She didn't want to hear them listing off people like they got voted off the island or some bullshit.

She wrapped herself tighter in her arms and kept going towards wherever.

((Isabel continued elsewhere...))
