We died but we learned from dying

A large, high-ceilinged building found north of the destroyed housing unit, the mess hall consists of two rooms. The first is a wide open space containing several long bench tables, bolted to the floor. The other is a spacious kitchen, as would be expected for a building that had to cater for a large number of miners. A large window between the two rooms once allowed food to be passed out as soon as it was ready, all the better to quickly sate the hunger of the workers after a long day.

We died but we learned from dying

((Blaine Eno continued from Under the Sycamore Trees))

The boy walked around the island and had not met many people on the way. None, in fact. That was for the better. Blaine Eno walked with his hands in his pockets and a burning cigarette in his mouth until he arrived at the Mess Hall.

In this place there was no one, but there were already signs of violence.

He looked through the shattered window and thought more about what the odd man in the bus had told them.

The dying cancer stick was thrown to the ground and a new one was lit on. That was what he needed to calm down after this situation. He needed the dopamine that was released by the consumption of nicotine.

Then Blaine hummed a rather happy tune.

Tina did things that didn't make a lot of sense.

For example, she did drug dealing to get money when she could have easily get a job or even an allowance. Sometimes, she'd skip school because she was stressed out about the credits she was missing. She chainsmoked cigarettes when she was working out to get healthier, to feel better about herself.

Today was no difference. She left the mess hall only to come back to it later. After she had left the building, she reloaded her gun and headed toward the lake but stopped in her tracks when she reached a patchy place with trees and long grass. She had a bad feeling. She didn’t want to go through the forest, get ambushed and died like that just to head somewhere she didn’t know. The lake could have been a good idea but she knew what was inside the mess hall: nothing.

As she headed back to the mess hall, she had time to think about a lot of things. First and foremost, the mess hall was easy to defend from people. There was only one entry and she could take cover in the kitchen. She could also easily manage to hide behind the counter and ambush people.
Yeah, that was a smart plan. She didn’t really understand why she left it in the first place. Maybe it was because of her impulsive thinking or maybe it was because the lack of nicotine, but she did things she didn’t really understand.

She had her left hand wrapped around the handle of her pistol, aiming forward. If she saw someone, she could just shoot them, get the kill, take their stuff, hide in the mess hall and wait until it was over. That is a nice plan.

Why would she need to move around when people could come to her and shoot them? Moving around the island wasn’t a good idea and Tina just understood it.

When she got near the door of the mess hall, her nostrils flared up. Someone was smoking a cigarette. Someone had what she wanted. Not only that, the person was humming a song. It wasn’t some kind of trash dumpster, it was a living and breathing human being she needed to kill. She could feel her joints aching and the lack of concentration setting in her brain. There was a fog spreading in her brain, slowly going around and annoying her, as if it was poking part of her brain where it knew where it hurt her.

She raised her gun, slowly opened the door with her right hand, lifted her gun and pressed the trigger toward the smoking figure.

The door opened and Tina stood there using her gun.

Blaine just stared at Tina while the sounds of the gunshots echoed the room. He removed his hands from his pockets and instinctively covered his face and ducked as if that would stop the bullets.

Then it stopped.

Was he shot?

Was he dead?

Shit.

No, he was still standing there. Now, with tears in his eyes and his nose running. He looked up to still see Tina standing there.

Blaine took out his cigarette box from his pocket and offered her a new stick.

"Sure. Uh, have it."

Tina was too far away to reach it though, so Blaine slowly, indecisively walked to her until she could grab it. He could already see his hand shaking while holding the cigarette for Tina.

That worked.

Her gun still pointed toward Blaine, she raised her right hand and extended it toward the stick. Her index and her middle grabbed it and she tugged it away. She used her ring finger and her thumb to drag it the middle of her fingers. She turned her hand toward Blaine, showing the ignitable part of cigarette.

"I assume you have a light."

Blaine swallowed and nodded.

A zippo appeared from his pocket and he ignited Tina's cigarette. Come on baby light my fire.

It was way different from the times when he ignited her stick when the two of them were having a smoke break during lunch break outside of the school. No, Tina was scary. As if she was some kind of queen.

He needed a drag too. He picked up his cigarette which fell to the ground when the bullets emerged from the gun. Blaine inhaled it. But his heart did not calm down.

Florentina raised her right hand, shoved the butt of her cigarette inside of her mouth. She filled her lungs with smoke, letting it rest in her lungs. She shook her wrist, letting the burnt part fall to the ground. After receiving the nicotine rush, she let the hostages go and made the smoke escape her body.

Tina didn't realized it but she let her gun point toward the floor instead toward Blaine. Smoking did that to her, it freed her from stress. She went from being tensed to the closest thing to relaxed she could be in this situation.

She raised the cigarette back to her mouth, inhaled with her mouth and exhaled with her nose. She stared at Blaine with her usual pokerface, she started walking to the side and toward the table she shot a hole through. She jumped softly and gracefully landed on the table and crossed her legs. She pointed her gun toward Blaine once again to show she wasn't up to any bullshit.

It was business time.

"If you were literally anybody else, I would have shot you on spot but you are kinda cool and have cigarettes. So this time, I'm letting you go this time, but with two-"

She took a break in her sentence then continued, cocking her head to the side,

"-condition: I want your smokes and if you see any Luz, you tell them to stay far away from the mess hall. Deal?"

So the two of them smoked peacefully for a couple of moments before Blaine broke the silence.

"Al...right. Deal."

There was no other choice. Blaine was the captive. If the answer had been anything else, he wouldn't be smoking from his mouth and nose, but from his head or torso.

The room was filled with two small clouds that came from them. But Blaine had this weird feeling inside of him. He looked at Tina. The gun was pointed on him. She threatened to kill. He stepped forward and reached in his pocket again to give the bundle of sticks to Tina. Give her the box and leave. That's it.

But he had a temptation. He looked at Tina's tanned face, memorised her facial features. He had the temptation to free himself from the control of Tina. He did not want the cigarettes, but he wanted freedom and safety. She could still shoot him. His heart raced and violent fantasies went through his head.

Fantasies of how he gets shot.

He held out the box.

But also the fantasy turned to reality where he raises his leg to kick Tina who reached for the pack of cigarettes. Blaine used his free hand to grab Tina's black hair shoving her off the table with full force. Some cigarettes dropped to the ground. Putting his box back into his pocket Blaine sprinted away from the mess hall. As he focused on running on the uneven ground he did not notice a gun being raised in his direction again.

Tina wasn't accustomed to pain. She didn't practice any sports that involved her getting bruised or hurt, she never really got into any physical fights apart from play fights with her siblings and cousin or when she got shoved around in hallways.

So when Tina's gut was kicked by Blaine then her hair pulled toward the ground, she was blinded by the pain. Her eyes started to have a veil of black over it, she struggled to breath as she fell face first on the cold, hard ground.

She didn't like pain. Never understood people who got tattoos or piercing or did extreme sport, yet in this moment, she wished she had some experiences in it. Tina was now on the floor, crawling like a bug toward her gun she dropped. She raised her head only to see Blaine run away from her. She found that odd, he could have killed her right there when she was stunned but instead he ran.

Her face hurt, she tasted blood in her mouth and the cigarette she held smashed against her hand, burning it slighty. She had it coming, she threatened someone and let him get close. What did she expect? Him to be all nice and comply? Next time, no mistake. She guns that person down.

Her fingers fumbled, grabbed her gun and raised it but Blaine was already far. She got on her knees and stumbled on them using her right burnt hand to get to the door entrance. She raised her gun and shoot at the running figure.

Her aim was shaky. It always been. She didn't really know how to use guns. She knew she was supposed to pull the trigger and a bullet would come off; if she wanted to die, she needed to put herself in front of the barrel.

She spat blood.

This encounter, despite losing it, wasn't so bad after all when she saw three little cancer sticks on the ground. It wasn't a lot: it was what she smoked in one session if she felt good. However, it was more than none and Blaine still had a lot.

That's it. She was going to kill Blaine at all cost.

She wanted to stay in the mess hall and wait for someone to come in and she'd shoot them then hide somewhere else but Blaine changed that. He had what she wanted. She coveted it at all cost, no matter who she needed to hurt, she wanted them so badly. She put her three treasures in her bag and smiled.

She got up, spat a bloody shot on the ground, reloaded her gun and started seeking for Blaine.
