The Path

Open

The buildings found on the eastern fringe of the town are by and large the fanciest and most expansive; naturally, these are the homes which housed most American officials and their families. This part of the area is comparatively shielded from the wind and elements, and the buildings are more architecturally adventurous, featuring a range of materials (including brick and stone siding) and more varied sizes. While there is the occasional one-story home to be found, most run two or even three floors. There's ample space between buildings, with paved walkways and large, well-maintained gardens. It's possible to hide in many of the houses themselves, and garages, basements, and out-buildings are prevalent. These buildings tend to be well-lit, with wide windows, and are largely clean and impeccably maintained—usually through the efforts of hired help rather than the former inhabitants.

Urgh god, she hated the way Pippa was speaking. It all sounded so put together and fake. She also said basically nothing, Freya had been thinking about it since before Pippa and Fisher had shown up and had already decided what she was doing. Talking about their options was pointless, they had one option everyone needed to take.

Regardless of what the other two said Freya had been working on her own plan. She was sure it was the right one, the only problem she saw was carrying it out. Plus, she had to find Galahad. Freya knew that no matter what happened she'd need to find him. He had been in classes in the outbuilding as well, so he had also been taken. She had to find him.

Freya scoffed when Pippa finished and nodded towards Fisher. He said it in a stupid ass way but she agreed with his point.

"He's right. It's fucking obvious, fuck America, we're not killing each other."

Freya paused and pushed some loose strands of hair out of her face.

"We need to refuse to do what they want. Any other plan is fucking stupid."

Pippa nodded along. It was good to know both Freya and Fisher were firmly in the "protest America" camp. She had her doubts, what with Fisher having a poor reputation and questionable choices and Freya having a clear anger streak, but at the least, both of them were of the same mindset as her.

"Right. I'm glad you both feel that way. It's a small comfort in a place where few comforts are to be found," Pippa said.

She brushed a little bit of hair behind her ear.

"Now, I suppose we ought to decide where to go from here. Naturally, I'd recommend we work together to find as many other potential allies as we can. I think the three of us can help one another out on that front, and it would probably help to have allies in case we come across some of our peers who have decided to give in to America's cowardly game."

"So, would that be of interest to either of you?"

Fisher's shoulders sagged a little as he listened to Freya and Pippa lay their options out. It was almost comforting to know that even in this kind of horrendous situation they found themselves in, Pippa was still going to be an ever-formal ice queen. On a regular day, he'd have found her uppity nature annoying, but today? It brought a sense of consistency to his world. Her plan, however, was one that he had a few misgivings about. He was wary to disagree too vehemently to any plan suggested though, as both women were armed with far superior weapons to his floppy piece of paper. Allowing Pippa's proposal to sit in the air for a moment, he raised a finger and slowly began to object.

"With... all due respect," he started, trying to think of how to posit his thoughts, "I think we want to be really careful about searching people out. While it's great that we're all on the same page of not going the 'let's kill everyone' route..."

He trailed off. Fisher still didn't want to believe that there were classmates of theirs that would stoop that low but he also knew that when faced with impossible circumstances, human beings would sometimes fall prey to their baser instincts.

What instinct was more basic than survival?

"Look, I'm all for travelling in a group, but I just think we need to be careful."

He looked from Pippa to Freya, whom he sensed may have been as unimpressed with Pippa's hoity-toity nature as he was.

"Is there anyone in particular that you wanted to find?"

He addressed the question to the both of them. No one in particular was jumping out at him, but a lot of his close friends weren't in this class. Just his luck, he supposed.

Pippa sure did like to talk. Freya was starting to find it irritating. It was so manufactured, each word carefully chosen to suit her purpose of being as proper as possible. Freya grimaced as Pippa finished off her little speech. Would it be of interest? Was she fucking real? Freya assumed that Pippa had no self-awareness, that was the only explanation for how she was speaking.

She was going to respond with something when Fisher spoke up. He had reservations about the idea, she couldn't blame him. He had a piece of laminated paper, which wasn't going to cut it in a fight. Freya, however, didn't really give a shit if he was nervous, everyone was nervous. No one wanted to be there but here they fucking were.

His question, however, did make Freya think and slowed her annoyance somewhat. She did need to find Galahad, that was her main goal before anything else. She needed to make sure he was safe. He couldn't look after himself, that was for fucking sure. If she left alone too long there was a good chance something terrible would happen to him. Galahad was like a puppy, cuddly, friendly and totally incapable of fending for himself.

"Galahad." There was a brief pause as Freya decided to answer Pippa as well.

"The more people the better."

Pippa had to find Fisher's response a little ridiculous. Did he really think she was just going to let anyone come close to them? Not at all. It stood to reason that they'd have to properly vet anyone who came near them. As much as Pippa wished to believe that everyone in the class would protest the Americans and refuse to play the game, she knew the stress and pressure would surely get to someone eventually. She could easily account for any dangerous people that would come near them. That's why Pippa was going to keep her knife within easy reach. That's why she was going to let a potential powder keg like Freya stay on her good side.

Pippa merely nodded along and waited until Freya gave a name. Galahad.

"Alright, that's one," Pippa said. "Of course, we'll have to make sure he's as resistant to playing this sick game as we are. We'll have to do that for everyone we come across."

Pippa looked to Fisher, then Freya, then back to Fisher. She wasn't entirely sure who was here that she was desperate to find and keep around during the game. She decided the best thing would to be diplomatic and let Freya and Fisher determine who they would look for. Pippa could decide who she wanted to find as they progressed.

"Is there anyone you're looking for?" Pippa asked Fisher. "I'm willing to help you guys find your friends first."

Keeping his lips pursed, Fisher thought for a moment on who he might actually be interested in finding while in this hellish little situation they all found themselves in. A little panic set in as he realized that there really weren't a whole lot of names that came to mind. Galahad was someone he knew off-handedly but was not necessarily all that close with, and Pippa hadn't yet said any names herself. Pippa seemed to be intent upon sitting in the driver's seat of their little plan, and while he appreciated that for now, he wasn't about to be lead into the slaughter courtesy of someone else. It was one thing to come looking for allies waving a white flag, it was a whole other to walk into a room assuming that everyone was going to be as friendly as they were.

Trauma had a funny way of making people do insane things. He was sure that the Americans were probably counting on that.

Fucking Americans.

"Maybe... Daniel?"

It was the first person that came to mind. Daniel Newhouse wasn't a close friend, but he was someone that Fisher would grab lunch with on occasion, someone that he trusted to have a nice conversation about sports with when no one else would engage him. He was really starting to realize how crazy this whole thing was - without any of his real close friends having been in his class, the odds were that he was going to have to trust in people that he didn't exactly know very well.

Lovely.

"I'll go with whatever you guys think is best. There aren't a lot of people who come to mind, really." He paused, and shrugged. "I'm having a hard time thinking straight, if I'm being honest."

Fisher gave a sheepish smile, and didn't say any more.

Pippa's statement just drew an eye-roll from Freya. She clearly didn't Galahad very well if she thought he had it in him to kill. Galahad barely had it in him to give someone a hard tackle. The act of killing was going to be a bridge too far for him. Freya didn't enjoy thinking about it, to begin with, so she dreaded to think how Galahad was taking it. Probably not great was her guess.

Pippa asked Fisher if he was looking for anyone and Freya zoned out because frankly, she didn't give a shit. Their plan was to find everyone else anyway, so what did it matter who he wanted to find. He wasn't exactly an assertive guy so Freya wasn't convinced that he would have just gone with whatever they had decided.

"Yeah, join the club," Freya grumbled in response to Fisher as she picked her bag up. It was down a couple of bandages since she had to use them already, but besides them, everything else was exactly how she had found it.

Whatever. If they wanted to get anywhere with their plan they needed to actually take action.

"So are we good to leave or what?" Freya asked, making no attempt to hide her impatience.

Pippa nodded.

"Yes. I think we're good to leave now," she said.

Pippa loosened her grip on the knife. She wasn't quite ready to put it away, but she could loosen it around these two for now. It looked like she had followed her plan well. Fisher and Freya agreed to follow her leadership, which meant that Pippa's odds of surviving were a little better than on her own. She didn't have an exact calculation yet, but they seemed willing to follow her, and her generosity at supporting their interests and finding their friends clearly mattered a great deal to them. At least for now, she knew two people who didn't need to fear her and that knife.

"Right. Let's go then."

Pippa walked past Fisher and towards the door. This was a better start to this horrible scenario than she had imagined. But then again, she was good at planning. She had to be if she was going to own her own company someday. Freya, Fisher, and the whole U.S. military would give her the training and experience necessary to accomplish her goals, and all she had to do was make sure she wouldn't falter in any way.

With that, Pippa led her company out of the wrecked home and into whatever the U.S. had planned for them.

And so it was time to go. Pippa seemed more than happy to take ownership of whatever their little group was, and as far as Fisher was concerned, that was fine. He barely had his wits about him, his hands couldn't stop shaking, and even the silly wobbling from the laminate paper couldn't soothe his frayed nerves. True to form, Freya seemed less-than-impressed with Pippa's self-proclaimed leadership, but followed behind it anyway.

Fisher honestly wasn't sure what to make of these two. These were two of the last people he'd ever assumed he would gather around in a situation like this. Of course, he'd never expected to be in a situation like this, so...

"Sounds good, then."

There wasn't much else to say. Swallowing his pride, his fear, and his trepidation at the time to come, Fisher let Pippa pass through the door. Looking at Freya - who seemed content to bring up the rear - he rolled his eyes at Pippa's 'leadership' declaration, and shrugged. He may not have thought too much about her demeanour, but he was going to follow nonetheless.

What else was there to do?

And so they were finally moving. Freya didn't care about where they were going, the location didn't really factor into anything. She had a list of objectives and it was pretty simple. The first one was to find Galahad. The second was to then go through with convincing everyone else not to do what the Americans wanted. She expected that part to come with some difficulty.

Until that point arrived however, she was fine with Pippa believing she was in charge. Freya had never actually yielded the leadership position to her—a fact she was acutely aware of—but until she needed to Freya knew there was no point causing drama about it. There was no doubt in her mind that she could have taken the leadership position from Pippa, easily at that, but it would have achieved nothing. So, for the time being, she allowed the girl to enjoy her time in charge.

Fisher seemed to have the same idea as she did as he rolled his eyes in her direction before following Pippa out. Freya didn't respond, instead focusing on grabbing her bag and adjusting her grip on the musket to make it more comfortable to carry.

She could take some solace in the gesture though.

((Freya Nygård continued elsewhere...))
