So here’s the thing about School Movie Night. At first glance, it sounded kind of lame and something for squares, yeah. Miranda sometimes wondered why she even bothered with it. To be honest, she could watch whatever they were watching at home, maybe invite some of her friends over if it wasn’t anything too embarrassing. And then you actually get there, pay for admission, maybe some food, sit down on a blanket, and wait for the movie to start.

On a surface level, the purpose of School Movie Night was to fundraise and hang out with your friends while watching a movie. The actual purpose, or at least the one everyone decided it was, was to find ways to start chaos. Miranda was amazed they still bothered with it at all. When she was a Freshman, her first movie night was Ghostbusters, and someone had thrown a cup of apple sauce at her. Where did they get the apple sauce? Miranda had no clue. Just that it made her grumpy. That was a nice cardigan, and it took ages before it even began to look presentable. Her next few Movie Nights were in the same vein. No one ruined her clothes again, thank god, but something always happened at these events.

Miranda first saw the signs go up a few weeks ago. They were hand-drawn, with these cute drawings of popcorn and bright neon coloring. It’d been burned into her memory by this point. A few weeks of seeing them hang around campus did that.

“MOVIE NIGHT AT P.J. HOBBS. Come support the school! $5 for admission, snacks will be on sale for low prices. All proceeds go to improving the school! Bring your own blankets and chairs!”

And above it, a film poster had been pasted in, along with the date, time and location. Apparently, this evening it was something called Monster Squad. Miranda had quickly looked it up, and it was this 80s movie that was clearly riding the coat-tails of The Goonies. Why that movie? She’d have to ask, dunno, Eris or someone. But anyways, Miranda had decided to stop by for this evening. A lot of people were going to be here, and it’d give her stories to tell later. Wasn’t like she needed to spend the evening re-watching Markiplier videos, anyways. That wasn’t a productive way to spend a Friday night.

Besides, Miranda was feeling cute today. She’d found this red sweater dress, and it looked great with black tights, dark brown boots, and a matching belt. It wasn’t spectacularly amazing, but it was motivation for heading out. She prayed to god that she avoided any apple-sauce related mishaps this time. If that happened, she’d probably murder the person responsible.

Once she made her way to the football field, she could already see the screen was up. The football field was where P.J. Hobbs usually had Movie Nights. Sometimes during poor weather they’d move it to the gym, but the football field was decent. Miranda found the admissions stand, and handed in her five-dollar bill. A moment later, she found the concessions stand just a few feet away. It was nothing exciting; just a few tables with several types of pizza and things from the student store.

The hand-written sign on top of the tables listed what was available and how much it was worth.

“CONCESSIONS
Pizza: $1
Popcorn: 50 c
Candy: 50 c
Soda: 50 c
Water: 50 c
Hot chocolate: 75 c”

Miranda looked it over some. Well, the prices were better than the cinema, that was certain. It helped that she’d scheduled today as a cheat day as well. She probably shouldn’t like, stuff her face, but it wouldn’t hurt to have some pizza. Miranda fished some more money out of her handbag. She’d made her decision.

A moment later, she was seated on her pink-checked picnic blanket near the front. She’d arrived early, so that meant that she got the best spot and everyone else had to suck it up. She had some food with her, as well. Miranda was currently blotting a pepperoni pizza, but she’d indulged and got a cup full of popcorn and some hot chocolate. Everyone may think that she’d brought her pink travel mug, the one with her name literally on it, because she was “environmentally friendly.” The truth was, she learned her lesson from last Movie Night, and she wasn’t going to dare keep her drink in an open container after that.

She took a moment to pull out her phone from her handbag. 7:19 right now. Movie Night was supposed to start at 7:30. That meant everyone was going to jump out in a few minutes. And that’d mean that stuff was going to happen.

And that’d mean everyone would have something to talk about the next morning.

Miranda put her phone away. It wouldn’t be long.

((Start: Aria Samuels))

This was going to suck. Aria knew it from within the deep, dark depths of his soul. He'd heard stories, oh he had certainly heard stories. School Movie Night was always a shitshow and had an infamous reputation for being an uncontrollable mess. He was surprised the school still insisted on organizing it. Alas, he had never personally had the "privilege" of going to any of the previous nights. Movies weren't really his thing, especially when the assholes from school had any part in it. It was funny hearing about Miranda getting applesauce thrown on her. He was almost sad he didn't get to do it himself.

Why did his parents have to find out? Sure, it was an advertised thing, but they should've been more preoccupied with their work. He could remember vividly the color draining from his face when his parents approached him with the idea of attending the movie night. They never got the memo about the disaster that the night ended up being, so they thought it was harmless and fun. He should've told them the truth about those nights. That way, he wouldn't be stuck here, standing a bit outside the footbal field and bracing himself for the coming of the apocalypse. It probably would've been pointless. His parents also looked so excited about him doing school things with other children that he didn't really have the heart to say no.

Maybe there was a way he could change how he viewed the night so it'd be more positive. Well, it'll be something new? His parents would get off his back about getting involved in extracurricular events. That'd be nice. Maybe some not awful people would be there as well. He could only pray to god, satan and everything in between that it wasn't just going to be him and every "popular" dickhead and bitch. He would never make it out of the event alive, let alone with any dignity intact. Then again, it could be the other way around. They could cause the mess, maybe throw food all over the popular kids again or something even bigger. Aria grinned mischievously, formulating plans that would probably never happen involving giant food fights and the popular kids getting humiliated by messy clothing or being caught doing something scandalous.

With those happy thoughts in mind, Aria briskly moved towards the admissions to pay for his ticket. The fact that it cost money sucked. Five dollars may not seem like a lot, but that is money that could be going to more worthwhile things like video games, music, not being forced to watch a movie with people that despise your guts. At least it wasn't coming out of his own pocket. His parents were more than happy to throw money towards anything that they thought would help him. Little things, Aria reminded himself. Always remember the good little things.

Heading to the concession stand, he felt like treating himself. He had some money, might as well make the most of it while he still could. The prices weren't terrible. He knew better that to expect anything better than barely mediocre when it came to food provided by the school. The pizza on offer was also a very safe Margherita. Passing over the money to the person behind the stall, he picked himself up some pizza and soda. Ok, so far so good. No one's smashed the pizza out of his hands. No heckling either. Granted, it was still early and there was still many an opportunity for this night to end in a nightmare.

Oh wait, Miranda's here.

It was hard to miss her. Of course, she had to take the obnoxious spot right in front of everyone. Aria shouldn't have been surprised. With her pink picnic blanket and matching kitschy travel mug, Aria could feel bile forming at the back of his throat. Did she realize how tacky and self-absorbed she looked drinking out of that mug? It even had her name on it! At least she was alone, for now. Aria knew that probably wouldn't be for long. That group tended to act like flies, swarming together and stinking up the place. They also had particular passion for making his life miserable. They may have been friendly before, but nowadays, he felt disgusting having even associated with them.

Maybe she hadn't noticed him yet. Well, more like hopefully she hadn't noticed him. She probably had some choice words for him. Was it too late to go home? The movie hadn't even started and already he was having second thoughts. He could just run. Where? Anywhere. It probably would be more fun than dealing with Miranda the entire night. his parents would probably find out. He should probably find a space, before all the good places are taken up and he'd be stuck next to the roadrunner slut from hell.

Attempting to not attract Miranda's attention, Aria took a seat a short distance away from her towards the edge. He debated sitting far towards the back to allow him a better vantage point for possible ambushes, but the place didn't seem too busy. At the back of his mind, Aria briefly held a miniscule hope that she'd be more focused on the movie than anything else. His brain harshly reminded him that this was Miranda, who was barely smarter than he was. Her attention span probably couldn't even last for 10 minutes, let alone an entire film. He kept to himself, hoping that maybe if he just pretended he didn't exist, no one else would bother him.

This was probably going to be the longest 1 and a half hours of his life.

Eris, generally, felt that supervising her peers at school events was beneath her, but she liked to think that she accepted the inconvenience with grace.

She was no school matron, to be sure, and any significant change in routine was enough to turn a sizable-enough group of high school kids to anarchy. Eris recalled the near-riot that had occurred on the first snow day of the year a few weeks ago and steeled herself for the Sisyphean task ahead of her this evening.

Taking admission money had gone smoothly enough, in that she didn't see anybody trying to smuggle alcohol in and only had to call out one or two would-be interlopers who tried to sneak in without paying (and why anyone would go to such trouble to watch an outdated B-movie on the football field was beyond her). That ended early enough that Eris could station herself towards the back of the crowd on the field before the movie started, the better to keep an eye on any aspiring troublemakers.

Miranda caught her eye as she did so; it was hard to miss a personalized set-up like that. Eris regarded her with a disdainful eye but gave a polite nod when Miranda looked her way. She too vividly recalled the applesauce incident of years past and kept it in mind as motivation to intervene in a timely manner should anything similar begin to transpire. Eris didn't like Miranda, but that didn't mean she would stand by and let hooligans run amok all over the student council's project, gaudy as the project was and even if said hooligans were running amok at the expense of someone Eris didn't care for.

Okay, when were people going to come along? Maybe she could text someone, maybe she could look around, maybe they were going to pop out like… dunno, a weasel. Or maybe a horde of zombies. Urgh, did she really think that? At least she was in the Halloween spirit. Zombies were spooky enough, if a little overplayed. Were zombies in tonight’s showing? Probably not, zombies are a Romero thing, not Universal. Dracula, Wolfman, Black Lagoon monster, Frankenstein’s monster, she was sure those were the old movie monsters.

Oh, and out of the corner of her eye, Miranda saw Aria. He was lurking near the edge, some ways away. It was kind of surprising, seeing him here. He hardly showed up to school events, or… did he go outside at all, aside from school? She had no idea. Miranda did have another question, though, and it boiled down to: who peed in Aria’s soda? He was giving her this look. Maybe someone really did pee in his soda, and he thought she’d done it. If someone did, it’d be disgusting, but the way these events went, only half surprising.

Miranda looked around her a bit more, and saw that Eris was, to be expected, making sure everything was running smoothly. Okay, so, Eris kind of had this thing where it seemed like every little thing upset her. Let’s just say that they’ve argued a few times. The thing was, even when Miranda didn’t like her, she at least respected her, if that made any sense. Eris was smart and hardworking, and even when that frustrated her… well, at least there would be less of a chance of applesauce being lobbed in her direction.

She returned Eris’ nod. Miranda was counting on her to save her clothes from mashed fruit this evening. She picked up her mug, gently blowing on it. The hot chocolate seemed like the cheap kind, based off past experiences, but one nice thing she could say about it was that it was nice and piping hot. And it wasn’t the bad cheap kind, to be honest. If it wasn’t, she wouldn’t be drinking it. Her eyes flicked back to Aria… being Aria, she guessed. Miranda considered for a moment. Then, she lowered the mug. She smiled in his direction. Finally, she gently waved.

That’ll do.

This event was a ghost town. At this point, Aria was seriously considering going home. No one his parents knew could possibly say that they say him leave before it was over. There was no one here! Was the park open at this time? He never really checked. Maybe he could scout out the area and find some place to listen to some music. It would be a more productive use of his time than sitting around here and waiting for this snoozefest of an event to end. It was possible that the rumors of the night were grossly overexaggerated. Given that said rumors tended to come from the popular clique, he should've known better.

Still, Aria kept an eye on Miranda. He knew it was going to be a battle between him and her. She didn't have reinforcements, luckily, but neither did he. None of the people he was friendly with seemed to be around, probably off doing better things with their lives, but she was also alone. Maybe her friends realized how vapid she was and knew they could be doing better things. That sounds about right. He bet she was regretting bothering to come to a school event like this. She probably thought she could just hang with her friends and laugh at how stupid it all was. Guess the shoe was on the other foot now.

Ugh, she's such a snob. No way in hell was that friendly. She knew what she was doing. Aria bet she was just laughing at his misfortune of being here alone. Oh please, did she not realize that she was alone as well? At least he didn't come with a stupid picnic blanket and dumb mug. Man, it pissed him off. Aria refused to respond. He wouldn't give her anything to stroke her ego. No way. In fact, now probably was the best time to put her in her place. She was alone, so no dumbass jocks to play knight for her. He had some lukewarm soda and disgusting pizza. Some would say it was a match made in heaven.

Maybe this night didn't need to end badly. He took a cursory glance towards the admissions table, he saw Eris. Oh boy, the Fun Police is here. She was about as goody-two-shoes as you could possibly get and was a know-it-all to boot. He expected her to get in his way. She was Student Council, after all. He'll need to plan this out. Maybe wait till the movie starts. If he was feeling poetic, he could create the chaos at the climax.

Yeah, that sounded fun.

Movies were young Lance's thing. Horror movies? Meh. But spending the night with his class was...not always a thing for him, because most of the time people were there Lance did not get along with. Paris, Maxwell, the usual suspects. But he had nothing else to do and watching a movie with others? It's pretty much more fun than just consuming them on his own like he usually does.

Also, who doesn't want to experience anarchy?

Lance drank from his cup while observing the other persons present.
I'm so glad to be back !

Eris followed Miranda's gaze and eventual, calculated wave, eyebrows raising slightly as she noted Aria. She saw him glance over in her direction as well, though he offered neither a nod nor a wave and she likewise pretended it wasn't happening. Aria was... problematic. That was a word for it. Twitchy, the resentful type, the kind who picked fights.

Between him and Miranda, who was more likely to be the aggressor? Miranda would have seemed more plausible if she had had company, but Aria was more reactive than proactive. Where there other factors in play here? The crowd was still sparse enough that reinforcements on either side could still show up.

And of course, it was Eris's duty to see that there was a minimum number of casualties, should they end up clashing at all.

It almost might have been entertaining, if not for the weight of the responsibility resting squarely on her shoulders. A little mystery for her, deciding who was more likely to shoot first in the hopefully-metaphorical sense.

Eris crossed her arms and made herself comfortable, waiting and watching.

Aria didn’t say or do anything. He just glared back. Whatever, Miranda guessed. Maybe the whole pee thing really did happen. Once again, who knew? It was Aria. Again, she was surprised that he’d come out at all. Him going outside to an event like this was an odd thing to see. A “when the planets” align, thing, she guessed.

Then, their little staring contest ended when Aria looked away, towards the admissions table. Miranda followed his gaze, and…

Oh. Eris noticed. Of course she would notice. She’d joined in with glaring of her own, complete with crossed arms. Miranda’s face turned into a frown. Right. If Eris was giving them the evil eye, it probably wasn’t a good idea to give Aria any more silent messages.

She turned forward, and continued blowing at the steam coming from her mug.

Ha, looked like Miranda was scared off by Eris. What a wimp. Aria smirked to himself, claiming a moral victory for himself. He totally didn't back down and he sure showed her. Oh, the movie was gonna start soon. He probably should pretend to pay attention to that. Turning back towards the screen, but keeping an eye on Eris as he did, he made himself comfortable and prepared himself to watch. Or pretend to watch. It really depended on how good the movie was.

- - - - -

This movie sucked.

The sheer amount of times Aria had rolled his eyes threatened to spin them out of his sockets. Jesus Christ. Maybe this was some elaborate torture made just for him.

Whatever. It meant that he'd have to find fun another way. His coke had gone undrunk and lukewarm by this point. In an ideal world, it'd still be cold for max shock value, but it'd had to do. He didn't know at what point the movie was. He didn't really pay much attention to the plot. Ah well, not like he cared.

Scanning the area, he checked to see if people were paying attention to him. When he thought the coast was clear, he sneaked quietly towards the back and began to stalk his prey. Miranda was in his sights. Sweet revenge was close. He could just taste it.
