He wsn't sitting there alone for long.
"Karl?"
The voice. It snapped him out of the trance his mind had so graciously put him in.
"Karl. It's me."
His head feebly turned. There, over by the trees. It was Carol.
Well, that was easier than I thought...
He'd found her. Or rather she found him. The only person still alive on this island that he could potentially call an ally.
Now what?
He wasn't sure where things were to go from here.
"Hi," he said, his voice monotone.

"Karl!"
Her voice raised, and suddenly, she felt herself running towards him.
"Karl. I've been looking all over! Are you all..."
She wasn't sure if she should ask it. But after a beat, she did.
"Are you all right?"
Carol finally found him. Now it was going to be okay. She was there to protect him from killing, and he didn't have to be scared anymore. She was sure of it. Now they could make plans to escape somehow. Maybe they could somehow disable the collars and ride away in a raft together. Maybe they could somehow make the military figure out where they were. Perhaps the military was coming in any second now, and that they were about to be rescued.
She was sure that things were about to get better, even if Paige, Amber, Marty, Lyn, and so many other people were gone. Even if she and Karl were murderers. They were getting better.
And Carol was glad for that.
She sat down next to him, not aware of what he had done just before she got there. They had to find shelter soon, or else they would be rained on. And Carol didn't want that.
She had been through enough already. So had Karl.

Was he alright?
That was a really good question. Karl wasn't really sure whether he could say he was alright. Sure, physically he may have been fine, other than the few lumps he'd taken from Janet just moments earlier. He subconsciously brought his hand up to where she'd scratched him. It stung a bit.
He guessed no one was really alright on this island anymore. He figured anyone who was still alive was a killer. It wouldn't be easy for them to survive. They might have to lay low, and move around undetected for a while.
But right now Carol wanted an answer it seemed.
"Yeah, I think I'm alright."
It was the best he could manage.
He wanted to just sit. He just wanted to sit, and not have anyone else bother him. No more killing, no more fighting. But that wasn't going to happen. There was work to do.
It was supposed to rain today.
"Let's go. We need to get indoors before the rain starts."
He stood up. Slowly and deliberately, as if he was sure his body would fall apart if he moved wrong.
He scoped out the horizon and walked, making sure to lead Carol away from the body he'd recently created.
She'd eventually know about the body, but she didn't need to be there when it happened.

He was alright.
And Carol smiled.
It was nice to see him again, really. That was a fact. She needed him, and he needed her.
Karl seemed to share the sentiment of them going and finding shelter, even if she hadn't voiced it. He had mentioned it himself, and he stood up. Carol grabbed her things and swiftly brought herself to her feet.
"Sure."
They needed to find someplace safe. The hotel was probably out, and she'd honestly forgotten where the danger-things were. But the places where you'd explode was probably important, correct?
Either way.
Shelter.
And so, Carol followed.
