((SP5: Michael Robinson - Start))

Michael Robinson sat cross-legged on a queen-sized bed. He stared blankly at the fishing net laid out in front of him. He felt like crying. He couldn't, of course- the whole country was watching him. So he just sat and stared at his net.

He was a scrawny kid with a terrible weapon. A textbook example of an easy kill. They were already counting him out, probably laughing at him, too. Or pitying him, even... he couldn't cry. That'd just prove them right. Michael could still win. There was a low chance, but it was possible, so he couldn't act like he had already lost.

Michael got off the bed and started pacing around the cabana, making sure to let the cameras know he was deep in thought. He couldn't fight, but he could work with people. He was on good terms with most of his school, and he had four teammates out there somewhere. He glanced at the scarlet bandanna that he had tied around his arm.

He had to find his teammates. It didn't matter who they were or whether they wanted to kill or not- they just had to be able to protect him.

Michael took his net and stuffed it back into his bag. Even if it was useless, he didn't want to throw anything away yet. He couldn't see anyone outside of the glass door, but it was still possible that there was someone wandering around the area. Cold air hit him as he slid open the door- he'd have to get used to it. He took one last glance around the cabana, his eyes settling on one of the cameras. Michael forced a smirk before turning back and stepping out of the cabana.

RBP1: VINCENT HOLWAY, START

"Good morning."

There was no warmth in the greeting to the boy stepping out of the cabana next to Vincent's. Fitting for the general weather, perhaps, but also for the very miserable situation they both were in.

In other words, Vincent has been shockingly nice given the circumstances.

A cold gust caused Vincent to shiver. His clothing was not suitable for the situation, but he didn't want to wear the costume assigned to him yet. It might keep him a bit more warm than what he wore at the moment, but with the bandana he was forced to wear he'd felt like a gay pride event visitor with very questionable taste.

Vincent eyed Michael. He seemed to be more happy about the situation. Well, not exactly happy, but he seemed to be readier to face the game than Vincent was at the moment.

The thought that one of his degenerate class mates would kill him disgusted Vincent.

((BB2: Caroline Leveson, START))

She knew how this worked, but she wasn't thinking very clearly at the moment.

In SOTF-TV, originality was important. Originality kept people watching. Things like the teams mechanic, like the ways contestants died, like the whole range of emotions that the contestants had when they woke up.

A swing, the sound of metal ripping through air, overbalancing, a stumble-step forward like a fool, but no one was watching, or so she thought. Caroline was trembling as she stood there behind one of the huts, breathing heavily, the fire iron in her hands and tears streaming down her face.

Crying wasn't very original.

A few schools out of thousands, a fraction of students from each school. A sacrifice for entertainment. Usually didn't seem like too much to ask. She was unlucky, and that was all there was to say about it.

She refused to believe that. It wasn't fair. She'd worked so hard to get where she'd gotten. Straight A's. The band. Just singing, by itself. Every one of her accomplishments repeating in her mind like a broken record - and now, worthless like one, too. Who was she now? What was she supposed to do?

There was no point in just standing there. She moved around the hut, poker firmly in hand, and the first thing she saw was Michael and Vincent. Both of which she knew, none of which looked like they'd been crying.

The first thing she did was move the fire iron over to the other hand and wipe her eyes.

Michael didn't expect someone to greet him the second he left the cabana. It was all the better, he supposed. He wouldn't have to spend time searching.

"Oh, hi."

Vincent wasn't the best person to run into. Sure, Michael knew him, if only a little. But he didn't exactly like him. He always acted like he was better than everyone else. Michael never showed his distaste for him, though. They'd barely even interacted in Whittree.

Also, they weren't on the same team. Michael was uneasy at the idea of allying himself with someone who'd eventually try to kill him if they wanted to survive. Still, finding his teammates wouldn't be easy, and if he stuck to himself he'd probably get killed before he could find his teammates.

So he had to make Vincent his ally. A temporary ally until he found his real teammates. After that... well, he'd think of something when he got to that point.

Michael thought for a moment about how to proceed before he continued talking. "Good morning, huh? We're getting slaughtered for the amusement of some gorehounds and they couldn't even give us the courtesy of dropping us somewhere warm. It's like-"

He noticed a girl holding a fireplace poker walk out from behind one of the cabanas. Caroline was another person in his grade that Michael was only slightly familiar with. She looked like she had been crying.

"Hey! We're friendly." Michael called out. Another potential ally.

Michael paused for a moment. Then he spoke up. Vincent nodded slightly when he called the viewership 'goryhounds', a term he could approve of, but then Michael stopped and Vincent realized that there was somebody approaching them.

It may not have been the nicest thing to do, but when he saw Caroline Leveson with tears in her eyes standing before him he could not but smirk.

"Fancy meeting you here. So I guess we three are going to be stars."

He, in some very odd way, liked Caroline. Though he did not forget that she argued against him back at their lunchroom discussion. Eventually, he'd have to show her how right he was, especially now that they are in the perfect enviroment to do so.

Caroline sniffed. Crossed her arms, so that the neatly folded and tied brown bear bandana on her left wrist was visible. The poker stuck out awkwardly to the side.

"Well, I'm glad you said that you're friendly, because if you turn around and stab us right afterwards, at least you were friendly."

Even with the situation the way it was, with the whole SOTF-TV thing, she could tell she wasn't really getting off on the right foot here. Still off-kilter. She sighed, breath turning into vapor in the wintry air, and tried again.

"Hi, Mike. Hi, Vincent." She sniffed again. "If we're stars, I bet most of us are just full of hot air."

It was odd, really. The initial panic had subsided, replaced by... people. This was something that was familiar - Vincent and his stupid smirk (it was because she looked like she'd been crying, right? Screw him), and Mike, though she really didn't know him that well. Yeah, they weren't exactly the first people she had wanted to run into, but to be honest, first on the list of people she wanted to run into right now was absolutely no one at all.

She needed to clean up her face.

Well this weren't getting off to a great start. It didn't seem like Caroline was happy to see either of them, especially not Vincent. Michael had a harder time telling what Vincent was thinking. Vincent was smirking for some reason, and it weirded him out.

Michael was also caught off guard by Caroline's comment about backstabbing. He hadn't expected her to be so forthright with her mistrust of him. He decided against directly responding to it , as anything he would say would reveals his agitation.

"My new-found fame isn't really comforting to me right now." He sighed.

"I don't think most of the kids here are psychopaths or wannabe celebrities. Yeah, Whittree can be kinda messed up sometimes, but we aren't killers. I'm sure that we can find a bunch of people who want nothing to do with this game. Then if we get a decent sized group and hole up somewhere, we'll definitely survive for a while."

Michael knew that it wasn't a great idea, but he was sure that they didn't have anything better. He was just hoping that by the time they got desperate and murderous, Michael would be safe with his teammates.

((Valerie Fitzroy continued from Summer Bitch VS Cherry Boy.))

Valerie had gotten far enough away from the museum to finally slow down and catch her breath. She was panting and wheezing, doubled over in pain. Only a part of that was from the running, the rest being from the amount of stress she'd suffered from the events that had transpired. She finally stopped and allowed herself to rest.

She wiped her eyes of the stray tears, and caught the slight drool that had come from her mouth. She took a couple of deep breaths, before straightening again. She looked around, noticing that she was now surrounded by a dotting of small buildings.

Suddenly her breath caught, and a tiny amount of saliva slithered down her throat. She coughed.

Loudly.

((Lily Ashburg continued from Reality Bites))

When Lily left the hotel, the first things she saw were the cabanas. She figured that that was as good a place as any to start her search, so she started walking in that direction.

As she walked she felt her emotions rise to the surface again. She stopped and closed her eyes for a few seconds. She had to focus on what she was doing right that minute. If she didn't, she would go crazy. Crazy was a bad state of mind to be in if you were trying to survive. She couldn't wonder whether Dougie would be alive when she found him, let alone fathom what would happen afterward.

It was like that stupid game that she used to play with her friends. If you thought about the game, you lost the game. When you lost the game, you had to say it, so that everyone else would lose too. The only time you could win the game was when you weren't thinking about it. Lily needed to not lose the game.

As she got closer to the cabanas, she saw a small group of people outside. They looked like they were just talking, and she didn't think that they'd seen her yet. She froze, and raised her bat. It probably wouldn't do her much good in an actual fight, but it made her feel better. She took a few more steps forward, and squinted. She thought they looked familiar. She took a couple more cautious steps. All of them were classmates from her school. She couldn't remember any of their names, but she vaguely recognized their faces.

She hesitated. Aside from Dougie, she couldn't trust anyone in this game. The teams were stupid, arbitrary numbers that completely brushed aside the bonds of friendship and love that people had built up over the years. The scary thing was that it worked. People last season had murdered their friends and significant others, all because they were wearing a different colored bandana from them. Lily was determinedly avoiding the question of what team Dougie was on.

Her survival instincts were telling her to run. On the other hand, they might be able to help her find Dougie. Also, as much as she hated to admit it, if any of them were on the purple team, it would be marginally safer for her, as they probably wouldn't shoot her. Reluctantly, she put the bat back in her bag, with the handle sticking out. She zipped it up most of the way, leaving enough space open that she could whip it out quickly if she needed to. She didn't want to look like she was in any way harmful, but she also needed to be prepared.

She felt cold with fear as she approached them. Her legs felt weak, and her hands were shaking as she raised them in a sign of surrender. At first when she opened her mouth, no sound came out. She cleared her throat and tried again.

“Um, hi. I'm not here to hurt anybody. I'm looking for Dougie—Douglas Sharpe. He's tall, African-American, and usually wears a purple beanie. Um, have any of you guys seen him?”

Caroline showed her most charming side and openly showed how much she considers trust a valuable currency. See, and this is one of these things that Vincent began to like about her. He once called her naive, but Michael's addition to the conversation made him wonder whether that was a misplaced describtion.

"I'm sure that's what the hundreds of people before us thought of themself as well. And look how tha-"

Someone coughed. Vincent tried to focus on the sound, attempting to find the source. There was someone else here, and someone who apparently was not willing to immediately reveal their position. He wasn't sure. Was that good? Was that bad?

"Have you heard that?"

A person was stepping towards them, raising their hands in a sign of surrender. It was... Lily Ashburg. Vincent knew her, more or less. Felt not very strongly about her, given that she knew so very little about Lily.

"Sorry, but no idea where he is. Looking for him myself, though.

By the way, were you the one coughing just now?"

"No," Caroline said, her face a little paler than usual. "That wasn't her."

She had stepped away for a moment when she'd heard the cough, curious as to its source and willing to leave the conversation to find out. Lily was okay, but Caroline didn't have anything to tell her about Dougie other than being pretty sure he was some sort of slacker. Then she'd seen exactly who had coughed.

No way. No way that was Valerie, bent over there in the distance, just out of sight of the others. It was hard to tell, but it looked like Val hadn't seen her yet. There was still time to surprise her, to run up and tackle her, or call out to her, or anything, really, that showed how she felt right now, seeing one of her best friends suddenly appear out of nowhere...

Caroline took a step back. Then another one. She had the crazy urge to hide behind Vincent, the only redeeming quality of that plan being that he was half a foot taller than her, before she regained her wits fully and slipped back behind the hut she'd been hiding behind at the very beginning.

Rubbing furiously at the tear streaks on her cheeks, she hissed at the other three, "It's Valerie. Don't you dare tell her I'm here."

Michael frowned. Vincent clearly wasn't on board. That made things difficult.

There was a loud cough and then the group was approached by Lily Ashburg. Caroline left to find whoever was coughing.

Michael was thankful for Lily's appearance. Vincent and Caroline didn't seem to eager to join up with him, but grouping with Lily would be easier. She was already searching for someone, so he wouldn't even have to convince her to look around the resort. It looked like she had an alright weapon, too.

"No, sorry. Dougie hasn't come by here. But I'm-"

Caroline returned and... wait, what was she doing? Was she hiding? From Valerie... what?

Michael went to where Caroline had been. Valerie Fitzroy was there, just as she had said. She also looked like she had been crying.

"Valerie?" he said, "You- are you alright?"

"No... no I'm not. I'm fucking not."

Valerie swore. Valerie almost never swore.

"It was barely five minutes after I woke up that I got robbed by someone I don't know, and then some ass threatens me like thirty seconds later. Oh, and there also the fact that I'M GOING TO DIE."

Her legs lost their strength and she fell to the floor, her tears beginning to fall from her eyes at full force.

"Why... why why why... Why did this happen to us, Michael? What did we do wrong?" she whimpered.

Lily felt like she was intruding. She'd always felt awkward about public displays of emotion, especially from people she didn't know. Apparently, Valerie had had a rough start to the game. The thing that she said that really put Lily on edge, though, was when she said that she was going to die.

It was a truth that Lily had been trying very hard to avoid. Good people didn't make it out of this game. It was called Survival of the Fittest for a reason. It was impossible to leave this game with your humanity intact. Lily knew that she didn't have what it took to be a murderer, and judging by the way she was freaking out, Valerie didn't either. Sure, there had been seasons where people had found weaknesses in the collars and escaped, but that was extremely rare. Lily and Valerie were both going to die in this game, the only question was when.

Lily felt like there was something pressing on her chest, and she suddenly realized how cold she was. Tears stung her eyes, and her lips started to quiver. She pressed them together stubbornly. She wanted to yell at Valerie to shut up, but felt too sorry for her. Instead, Lily crossed her arms over her chest, shuffled her feet, and bowed her head in an effort to hide the tears that were now streaming down her face.

"...I am confused."

Valerie was standing somewhere among the cabanas and she was the one coughing. Understood. Then Michael and Lily went to her. Understood that as well. Caroline, on the other side, did not go to Valerie like the others and even commanded them not to tell her.

That was the part where they lost him.

Vincent walked to where the others were to get a better look, only to see nearly everybody crying. Valerie, Michael, and even Lily could only obviously hide it. Deciding that joining this tear-party was not to his taste, he hurried back to where Caroline was.

"Alright," he whispered to her. "what the hell is your problem?"
