David and Goliath

Day 3 Closed, PM for Entry

Ice cold and deep enough to lose your depth easily, swimming here is not recommended. Just a little north of the inhabited areas, it's clear from the decayed boat shed built on its edge that the lake was once used for fishing, likely by miners in their off hours. There are even a number of small rowing boats present, though the majority of them are rotted to the point of being unusable.

((Saachi Nidal continued from We're Mostly Made of Water))]

Hearing the sound of footsteps behind her, Saachi knew that she had succeeded. Or at least, she was safe to assume that she succeeded. In any case, her main priority was moving. The bags were weighing her down, but she could feel the adrenaline pulsing through her body as she pushed herself to keep running. After a few moments, her head looking down at her feet to make sure they wouldn't stumble, Saachi looked up and saw the end of the trees.

Pushing herself through the treeline, Saachi was greeted with the familiar sight of the boathouse. She remembered that the lake was close to the ravine and what better territory was there than one that she was familiar with? An instant hit of relief washed over her as she saw that no one else was there. Though her body was telling her to stop, she knew that she had to keep on running. At least for just a bit longer.

The exhaustion was hitting her as she ran behind the boathouse and hid behind one of the dilapidated boats. At that point, she slid down into a sitting position and relaxed. Even if it was only for a moment, she needed time to get her breath back. Running with two bags for the distance made her stomach feel queasy and her body weak. In retrospect, picking up Jason's bag may not have been the best idea, but it was too late for regrets now. She took a few deep breaths as she heard the sound of footsteps approaching her.

She immediately chucked the empty gun over the boat, letting it rest in the middle of the boat graveyard. It was useless to her. At least this way it could be used as a possible distraction or something instead of just sitting in her hands. Reaching into her bag, she rummaged around, trying her best to be silent, until she found her cleaver. Adonis was a big guy, so she knew she had to take every advantage that she could. She could feel her heart rising to her throat in anticipation.

Saachi faced the ocean, back to the boathouse as she waited for the footsteps to get closer. The two boats closest to the boathouse had Michael and Jay's bodies, with the few other boats being arranged in two lines, leaving a small gap in the middle, leading to a boat at the back, where she hid facing the cool blue waters. Saachi was quiet, trying her best to take silent breaths as she heard the footsteps get closer and closer. She clasped her trident and cleaver with a nervous energy. She knew she could do this.

(Adonis Alba continued from We're Mostly Made of Water)

The chase had gone on for way longer than Adonis expected it to. Either Trident Girl was faster than he thought, or he was starting to lose a step out there. Whatever, he could think about that later. He still had stuff to deal with.

He came out of the trees near the lake. Pretty nice-looking lake, too. Shame he never found his way here before. Looks like kind of a nice place to just kick it and spend an afternoon. Maybe once the group was all back together... no, wait, he was getting ahead of himself. First he had to take care of Trident Girl and get Jason's stuff back, then he could go onto what happened next. He had already chased her all the way here, so there was no point in getting sidetracked now.

A quick look around led him to zero in on the boathouse. It was the only place around that looked like a decent place to hide, so it was the most logical place to check. He moved in, closing in on the boats neatly laid out in their rows. He cracked his knuckles and stretched out his arms, muttering under his breath during his approach.

"Callin' me a coward... fucker..."

He sniffed the air, detecting something weird as he was withing the vicinity of the boats. It smelled absolutely awful, like some kind of dumpster that something had died in. He hadn't smelled anything that bad since back at the warehouse, when he stumbled into Aaron's corpse. Unfortunately for him, he didn't manage to put two and two together before he looked into the boats, finding a carcass that used to be one of his classmates, with a huge, festering chunk missing from their head.

"Fuck!" Adonis recoiled straight away, swiveling his feet to look in the other direction... where he found another body, this one in much worse shape. Hell, at least the first one looked like a clean kill. This one looked more like some kind of animal had been tearing at it. Seriously, what the hell was going on?

He gagged and backed away from the boats, suddenly feeling very unwell thanks to the sights and smells.

She could feel some of the energy coming back to her as she waited for Adonis to approach. She could hear his faint muttering but was unable to discern the words. At least her assumptions proved to be correct. Now all there was left to do was execute the plan to take Adonis out.

Saachi tentatively peeked around the edge of the boat to try and get a better view of what Adonis was up to. She recoiled backwards at Adonis's sudden remark, catching herself before she fully gave up her position. Taking a second to regain her composure, she tried to see what had caught Adonis by surprise.

Oh, he found the dead bodies.

While Saachi had definitely noticed the smell and was certainly not enjoying it, knowing where the smell came from helped her cope with it. Adonis didn't have that luxury and seemed to be suffering the consequences. Saachi briefly considered trying to attack him while he was disorientated. The issue, however, was that Adonis was backing away from the boats. There would be too much time between her charging and reaching him that Adonis would have more than enough time to react.

Saachi had to lure him back in. Give him an incentive to come back close to the bodies. Turning to her things, she thought of something. She still had Jason's bag. Granted, she hadn't had the time to properly loot it for food and such, but that should make it a better lure. Nodding to herself, she took one more look around the corner to check on Adonis. He still seemed to be recovering from the initial shock of the bodies.

She quickly slung Jason's bag over her and crawled across the floor behind the row of boats as fast as she could. It was a tougher endeavour than she expected, mostly due to her skirt being caught occasionally on her knees, slowing her down. The lower part of her skirt became muddied and she could feel the damp earth digging into her knees and hands. Nonetheless, Saachi gritted her teeth and continued to crawl. She was never going to give her position away that easily. Otherwise, she'd be bulldozed over by Adonis. That probably would've been one of the worst ways to die.

Once she reached close to Jay's boat, Saachi held her breath at first. Even if she was able to cope with the smell, that didn't mean she wanted to breathe it in too much. Jay's boat signalled the end of her crawling for the moment and Saachi looked around to see the boathouse a few feet away from her. Lifting Jason's bag off herself, Saachi pushed it towards the front of the boathouse using her feet. She clung to the end of the boat to keep her balance as she kicked and prodded the bag forwards, eventually letting it rest in front of the boathouse.

Bringing her feet back in as fast as she could, Saachi leaned against the back of the boat and waited. Taking a breath, she cringed and held back the urge to vomit.

God, he smelt awful.

Deep in a fit of coughing and dry heaving, Adonis clutched his stomach with one hand and covered his nose with the other. It was still a smashed mess in the middle of his face, but it was bleeding a lot less now, although that came at the cost of it being crusted with dried blood and snot. He would have thought that the only advantage to such an injury would be the inability to smell noxious odors, such as those given off by rotting corpses, but it turns out that he couldn't even get lucky enough for that.

He stumbled over to the wall of the boathouse, pressing his hands against it to steady himself. The irritation caused him to sneeze, breaking the biological seal of his nose. A thick, gooey glob of bloody mucus dangled from his face, lasting long enough to draw his displeasure before it fell to the ground, splattering right in between his shoes. He sneered at the sight and looked up, away from the mess. He really needed to get his nose taken care of. If Trident Girl hadn't drawn him away, he could've done that earlier.

Asshole.

He took a moment to shake himself off, then started looking around to- Hey, was that there before?

He was instantly distracted by a bag laying in front of the boathouse. Was it Jason's bag? He couldn't tell. Hell, aside from the numbers on the sides, they all looked the same to him, and how the hell was he supposed to know what number Jason's bag had? But wherever it came from, the point was that there was a bag right there with no owner nearby, ripe for the taking.

Now, Adonis still had morals, and he knew that taking someone's bag was basically a death sentence for them, or at least something close to it. Hell, he just had to look out how Kyran had been doing to explain that, and Kyran had him around to help out. But really, he had to look at the situation here. There was a bag sitting out in the middle of nowhere with no one around, it was late, and no one had come to claim it yet. He was almost definitely positive that whoever owned this bag was dead. They had to be. It didn't make sense for the bag to be sitting there otherwise.

And since a dead person had no further need for their supplies, that meant that Adonis could grab discarded bags without feeling bad about it. Good to have that little ethical dilemma cleared up quickly and efficiently. He took a few steps forward and knelt down to pick up the bag. Hopefully it hadn't been looted of rations yet. He could use a refill.

As he got his hands on the bag, he realized that he still hadn't found Trident Girl.

The sounds Adnois was making was not helping her keep her food in her stomach. Did he have to be so loud about everything? Even back at school, Saachi swore that he would never shut up. He always acted like an idiot and was an asshole to pretty much everyone. Making things hard for everyone with his hair-trigger temper and caveman-esque stature. If he his intelligence was even half of his physical strength, Saachi would've had major problems with him. Luckily, he was dumber than a bag of bricks.

Saachi was relying on that lack of intelligence. She recognised her shortcomings came from her physical strength. She would never in a million years beat Adonis in a straight-out physical competition. What she lacked in physical strength, she more than made up for it with the intelligence department. She had studied, worked hard and persevered through tough times and lofty family expectations. Those were the things that she had relied on up until now, and she was pretty sure she was one of the kids who had flourished so far. Sure, she may have faltered a bit with Lyndi, but she was still alive and Jay wasn't. That had to mean something.

She looked down at her trident and cleaver. There was something comforting in having the lethal weapons in her hands, the cleaver in particular. These were the things that she had over the others. Her tools of destruction. She knew she was one of the more prolific killers, one of the mover and shakers. Unlike her other classmates, she had the nerve to do things. To take her fate into her own hands rather than just sitting around and waiting for a miracle to happen. That's what she told herself as she peeked around the corner to check on Adonis.

It looked like Adonis had seen the bag. Ok, step one was complete. He had found her bait. Would it be enough for him to try and take it? Going off the announcements, he hadn't seemed to have done anything of note. He hadn't killed anyone and judging from the company he kept, he didn't seem to have helped anyone play the game either. She doubted he would be smart enough to recognise it as a trap, but he might have caught some moral correctness from Kyran and think he was too good to pick up an unattended bag.

Saachi watched with bated breath, doing her best to put away the thoughts and smells of the dead body that was right next to her. Worst case scenario, he doesn't pick up the bag and he just leaves. That'd be annoying, considering how far Saachi had to run, but it wasn't a disaster. She'd probably have to deal with him down the line, but at least she wasn't dead. Catching him by surprise should be enough of an advantage, considering what happened with Jason. Just rinse, and repeat.

Step two went off without a hitch. Good, he's focusing on the bag. Saachi did a little fist pump to herself before slowly shifting to a pouncing position. Rinse, and repeat. This should be just as easy as Jason. She took a second, closed her eyes and composed herself.

With a mighty yell, she jumped from her hiding place and thrust the trident through Adonis.

Saachi saw blood drip onto the bag. In between the boats, Saachi's full attention was on her victim.

The plan succeeded.

Pain.

Forget Kyran, forget the bag, forget the bodies in the boats. The only thing in Adonis' mind now was a piercing pain in his chest. He looked down, and was greeted with three points poking through the front of his jersey, the material around them slowly being dyed a deep, dark shade of red.

The... fuck?

It took less than a moment for him to put the pieces together. He had just seen the same shit happen to Jason. Stabbed right in the back outta nowhere. Weird thing was, Jason was basically dead on his feet, but here Adonis was, still standing. Maybe he just got lucky and she didn't hit anything vital, or maybe he was just tougher than Jason. Whatever, didn't matter. Somehow, he was still alive, and he had a pretty good idea of what was directly behind him.

He clenched his fist and spun around, swinging his arm with all the force he could concentrate into one movement. He felt the forks lean and bend inside of him, aggravating his already-significant injury, but he didn't have the time to think about that right now. He just let out the anguish in the form of a battle cry and let his haymaker keep on swinging.

As soon as she felt the trident begin to turn, Saachi had let go of the weapon. This wasn't supposed to be happening. He should be dead by now, just like Jason. Why wasn't he dead? Why wasn't he dead!?

Saachi didn't have much more time to process this catastrophe before she felt a haymaker connect solidly to her face. She staggered backwards, her ears ringing from the impact and clutched the side of her jaw with her free hand. The world started to spin as she did her best to keep her balance and get her bearings. Fuck, Adonis shouldn't have had the chance to hit her. Why was he still standing? What sort of monster was he? As Saachi began to straighten, she turned to see Adonis rushing towards her and felt the wind rush right out of her body as she got tackled to the floor.

Saachi could only cross her arms over her face as Adonis began to rain blow after blow at her. All that could escape from her mouth were pathetic whimpers and moans of pain with the occasional expletive as each of Adonis's fist smashed into any part of her body he could reach. All Saachi could think about was the pain. The pain of each fist colliding with her. It reached a point where she lost track of where the fists all melted together and she couldn't recognise individual strikes, just attacks all over her upper body. One of the only things grounding her into reality was the cleaver that was still clutched tightly in her hand, almost like a lifeline at this point.

This was 1000 times worse than with Jay. Jay was a feather while Adonis was a wrecking ball. This was the absolute worst scenario. This was where she felt useless. Like she couldn't do anything but just accept the beatdown with no idea whether it would end or not. For what she knew, he would just beat her down until she died. Was that even possible? That thought alone was terrifying. She could feel tears rolling down her cheeks as Adonis's wrath was brought down upon her. This wasn't supposed to be how she went down. No, she wasn't even supposed to be going down in the first place. She was a winner. She was supposed to be the one to make it to the end and go home. Dying now, to fucking Adonis of all people, was not something that should've ever happened to her.

And yet, it was.

Even with of the hard work, planning and ruthlessness that she brought to the island, that still wasn't enough. How was that fair? Saachi was just doing what needed to be done in this game. What most of the other kids in her class were too scared to do. Saachi played the game so that she could survive. So that they all didn't die together because of the rules Danya gave them. While she never considered herself a "hero", at least she did something. Doing nothing was basically suicide. And yet, she was the one that had to suffer while those who sat around doing nothing and refusing to get their hands dirty were rewarded.

What a joke.

...

When will the pain stop?

Saachi had no idea how long it had been going on. Seconds stretched into minutes as the blows kept coming. At one point, she wished that she lost consciousness in the hope of letting the pain just disappeared, but she had to remind herself that doing so was paramount to death. No matter how much pain she suffered, she needed to stay alive. Almost to push herself to stay conscious, Saachi gripped tighter on her meat cleaver. Just keep grasping onto it. Ignore the pain and just focus on your weapon. She could get through this. She had to get through this.

Eventually, Saachi noticed that Adonis's punches were becoming less frequent and weaker. While her body still ached, Saachi could recognise that the blows that came towards her didn't have the same intensity that they did before. They also were less frequent. What started as a flurry of blows slowed to a more mellow rhythm and was still getting slower. Saachi was panting in pain, but she recognised that this was her only opportunity to strike back. To take back the power she had ceeded over to him. She could feel the cleaver still held tightly in her right hand.

After one more punch from Adonis, Saachi quickly raised her right arm into the air.

"Fuck off, Adonis!" Saachi wailed as she used all her remaining power to smash the cleaver into his skull.

Adonis wasn't as dumb as a lot of people thought he was. He knew that having a giant fork through his chest really did a number on his chances of getting out of this mess, way more than everything else that had happened so far combined. If he wanted to fix that giant fucking problem, then he needed to figure out how to get it out, and somehow clean a wound that went straight through his body. He wasn't gonna lie to himself, it sounded like a pretty tall order.

But then there was the issue of Trident Girl. She killed Jason, and now she had tried to kill him. Hell, he wouldn't have been surprised if she had been doing a bit of killing before then, too. So that made her a murderer. A multiple murderer, or at least an attempted one. She was probably gonna go right back to stabbing people in the back, killing them out of the blue. A lot of people could die because of her.

Well, maybe not if someone did something about it.

Adonis descended upon Trident Girl with a flurry of punches, all thrown with the full weight of his strength behind them. He didn't bother to aim his attacks, some hitting the dirt, but most slamming against flesh and bone. All the shit he had gone through, and all of the anger that had been built up over the past few days was focused into his onslaught, giving her an all-out pummeling unlike anything he had ever imagined of doing before.

He wasn't the bad guy here, though. She was. She was a killer, and he was gonna stop her. He had done nothing but fuck up since he woke up in the woods. He scared people away, he got in fights, he got Kasumi shot, he broke Kyran's face, he got his group lost, and now he had a trident sticking out of him like a shrimp on a fork. But fuck all that. He screwed up, yeah, but this time he was gonna get it right. He was gonna keep a murderer from getting off the island. This time he was gonna be the fuckin' hero.

His face locked in a savage expression, Adonis continued to rain down blows onto the Trident Girl. Unfortunately for him, his adrenaline was starting to wear off, and the blood loss from his trident wound was taking its toll on him. As the dark pools on both sides of his jersey expanded, his strength and stamina were being sapped. He kept swinging, but he couldn't keep up the pace, not even close. But he had to keep fighting. He just had to keep going for a little bit longer. His attacks slowed as he had to catch his breath, which was suddenly hard to come by.

When the cleaver hit him between the eyes, he stopped breathing entirely, and the rest of his functions shut down in short order as well. He unceremoniously collapsed as his muscles stopped supporting him, and the troubled soul of Adonis Alba was finally put to rest.

Saachi didn't have much time to roll out of the way as Adonis's body finally collapsed. Adonis was dead. There was no surviving a blow like that to the head. Then again, she thought that a trident through the chest would've taken him down.

She took deep breaths, trying to instil some calmness after the brief storm. Admittedly, Saachi was shaken. That never should've happened. Adonis must've been some sort of monster to have survived for that long. She had no love lost for him. He was an asshole at school and proved to be a dangerous foe here. She shimmied a bit, grunting with each movement to get through the pain until she rested her back against one of the nearby boats. She could smell the dead body inside, but Saachi just gritted her teeth and bared through it. With every movement, Saachi never let Adonis leave her field of vision as if she expected him to rise again and recommence the beating. Yet his body didn't move.

She laid back against the boat, even as Jay's body decomposed inside it. She wiped away the tears that formed in her eyes. She was glad only Adonis was here. The mere thought of having to deal with others watching and judging her gnawed at her from the inside. She was supposed to be strong. She was one of, if not the most prolific killer on the island. If someone saw her weak, easily overpowered, that would shatter her image, her work, and any mental advantage she had over the others.

She refused to be weak.

But her body ached.

And she was getting tired.

Maybe it was ok to rest for just a little bit. It was getting dark after all. No one else seemed to be around. Saachi glanced around just to double check. The area was still clear. Maybe she should’ve done more to protect herself. However, in her haze of exhaustion and pain, trying to do anything else seemed like too much work. She just wanted to sleep. Even the bad smell started to drift away as her eyes flitted open as close as sleep eventually overwhelmed her.

Unlike previous nights, Saachi’s sleep was restless. She frequently found herself jolted awake, vividly remembering the beatdown she received from Adonis or haunted by nightmares where she was frozen as her previous kills advanced menacingly towards her. Each time she woke, her body was sweat profusely and panic would shoot through her body as she primed herself to be ambushed.

There was no one. Every time she woke up, she was alone. No one had come to ambush her just yet. The night was clear, and she only had dead bodies to keep her company. Saachi took time to calm down, dissuading her fears with cold hard facts. The others were probably asleep. She was alone here. No one was coming to get her. At least not yet.

The false assurances did little to fully quash her concerns, but they were enough to let her sleep, though whether it could be called restful was up for debate.

She took the time during the announcements to clean her weapons. Having extracted her cleaver and the trident from Adonis’s body, she set about cleaning as soon as she woke up. Distracting her thoughts from the previous night seemed to be as good an idea as any.

An odd sense of relief shot through her as she heard Miranda’s name appear on the announcements. Knowing that her close friend was still alive was refreshing, even though she had killed someone. While she had no idea how their reunion would be, if there ever was one, at least there was a chance she’d work with her. That she understood why Saachi played the game.

Not like Chuck, who tried to act morally superior to her because he thought he was “too good” to play. Reality would come and hit him sooner rather than later and hopefully, she’d be the one administering the cold, hard dose.

There wasn’t much else for her to do here. If last night was any indicator, sleeping with the dead probably wasn’t the best thing for her mental or physical health and the smell wasn’t something that she wanted to deal with for any longer than she needed to. After cleaning the blades, picking up the empty gun and looting all the food, wipes, the sword and other necessities from Adonis’s and Jason’s bags, Saachi made her move.

She didn’t look back at the carnage she left. She needed to look forward. Continue what she started. With each kill, she went deeper into the rabbit hole from which there was no escape. The only thing she could really do at this point was embrace it.
