Hero? But I'm a Kid Like Everyone Else

Day 6: Morning. PM for Entry

These are the woods on the island’s northern coast. The trees run nearly all the way to the sea, allowing only a thin stretch of beach, which disappears altogether depending on the tide. The trees here are largely coniferous, and are in good health, bolstered by a number of wet years and their proximity to the ocean. These woods are largely fairly dense, though clearings are abundant and comparatively-sparse undergrowth leaves them fairly easy to traverse.

[[Kyran Dean Continued From: This is The Age That You Start Losing Friends.]]

It was still there, untouched. Rucksack B14. He couldn't believe it.

Fire still burned. The torch was lit as ever, but its brightness faded with the tiny signs of morning light poking through the canopy above, or what was left up top some trees at least. The branches still lay scattered, littering the area from where he had shot them down. It was eerily serene despite things, couldn't even hear morning birds chatter.

Kyran unzipped the pack; a bit moist from drizzle, but still contained everything. He popped open a water bottle, taking a mild chug of it. He could have prevented the dehydration a couple days ago with one of these. What else was in here, besides energy bars, which he quickly unwrapped and bit chunks of.

A map. One of his own. Nice. Now he could refresh himself on where everything was again.

This whole pack felt like treasure after several days without. Not even kidding.

On the map, Kyran scanned the areas where everyone had been sent to do the toilet paper fires and to remember where the lake was. Chuck went here, Scarlett right there, Michael over at the quarry, Natali had an area up north before she ditched them and Kyran’s area was over on the lower east over there. He put his finger on the map and traced the distances between each, when it came to him.

Wait a minute.

No way.

Yes way.

That - That was a smiley face.

Michael Crowe was either brilliant or - what was he saying, the guy was brilliant. Kyran was right - knew something was up.

He quickly pumped a fist in victory.

There was a chance. A chance that they all could go home if someone saw. If 'they' whoever it was that was supposed to find his kidnapped class were able to get rescuers down here as soon as they could, if their classmates could lessen their kill rate to a maximum of one and delay time longer, then maybe.

Maybe he'd get to see his sandy brown Pomeranian, Bella again.

There was something deeper behind it all, that the terrorists hadn't thought of with this and even if it wasn't likely, Kyran had faith in this plan, in Michael. All he had to do now while they wait was to try to save more lives.

Kyran strapped his reunited rucksack to one shoulder, with the AK47 on the other and torch in hand. He was ready to head back to the others at the lake.

At least he was, until he heard the snapping of twigs and the hammer or whatever it was called - click.

Kyran turned his neck to the side, lifting that same corner of his mouth up into a small, tight-lipped half sneer.

...

"Hola. Tina."

"Te voy a dar una galleta, Kyran."

She looked at Kyran. There he was, right there, one pull of the trigger away to finish him off. Finish what he did to her, finish it once and for all. It as if they were the last person here, people died. Nobody died around Tina, she saw no-one die. Was it even happening? No idea, she saw corpses but did people die around her? Never. Nobody ever died around her.

But the people, the kids from a foreign memory of her past, were dying left and right, their body hitting the ground like Nate. She had died, Tina was happy she didn't give some of her supplies to a girl who fell in a ravine because she tried to climb it. She wasn't sure if she could take the announcer seriously because of his tone, but it sounded like she did a dumb thing and died.

Wendy killed more people. She didn't care about Wendy, she didn't see her or her victims. Then, another boy fell in a ravine and died. Whatever. People around her made mistakes and ate soup from a known killer and decided to play around heights. Tina just slept in a bush until she awakened by a burning sensation.

The forest was on fire. Kinda. There was embers, and smokes, and flames. She followed the flames, searching for the firestarter. She wanted to start fires, but someone else did it. She followed, she searched, she hunted.

Her home, where she was hurt and saddened, was burning. It wasn't really a home, it was a den. Tina reverted to a primal state, really. She hunted for food, hunted for preys, drank water she found in pond. A savage creature that searched and murdered, but without the murdering part, she was bad at killing.

"You hurt me."

Her eye.

He turned and saw that there was something wrong with her eye. He recalled seeing her run from this place, clutching at that very same spot.

"It was not my intention to hurt you. For that, I'm sorry."

Even through Tina's presence, Kyran could only think of the burning happy face Mike Crowe had so cleverly divised. Of the potential for everyone to make it out alive. Even his nemesis standing a few feet away, gun pointed and readied directly on him.

The lead terrorist announcement had passed by this point, but screw that guy. Sure enough that prick had encouraged everyone to pick up the kill pace. Figures he'd danger-zone the Parish Stronghold as soon as they realized that the four of them, were turning it into a safe house. But you know what?

Whatever.

Same to you Tina, with your uncanny ability to emerge undetectable from some bushes in a gun totting ambush. To your petty personal vendettas. And whatever you were saying in Spanish about cookies.

Dang Dean: should have listened and learned more about the language on that side of your culture from mom more often. Maybe then you could have understood more than just the word that meant cookies and said something equally suave and clever in español right back to her. The fact that she was fluently bilingual was one thing he could respect and was somewhat envious on Tina for.

Yeah. Whatever.

"Though, after your trigger-happy introduction. I'd be remiss not to say: You had it coming."

Tina squinted and grinned. That asshole, she didn't have it coming, she didn't even aim for him for fuck's sake. She could probably kill him right there, just put a bullet in his skull and leave him to bleed out. Yeah, she could do that, she could kill him, and loot him. She crossed her arms, still staring him down.

She said nothing, just staring at him, not listening to the branches breaking around her and the birds flying away. She only had eyes for the boy in front of her, as if they were the two last survivors of their class. Yeah, it was almost like that, the two last people alive on the island and they were together. It felt like that as she crossed her arms.

As if he had the moral ground on her, as if he was better than her. She could see it in his eyes. Or maybe she only saw what she wanted to see. She raised her gun then lunged. Nothing matter, but especially Kyran's life stop mattering the second she jumped on him with a gun against his head.

She almost spat in his face as she lunged on the boy, her face tearing in excitement to taste the blood of her first kill. The only kill she needed, the only kill that matters, the only kill that would be right next to her name. She smiled, even her lips didn't move. Her eyes were talking, her eyes were scared but excited.

Her eyes were telling a story that Tina never told.

The impact hit Kyran hard.

Metal crushing against cheekbone.

The dull pain throbbed near his eye.

But the trigger was not pulled.

It was all surprise.

He was not dead.

"Awh - the hell, bitch?"

That pistol whipping sure hurt though.

Her laugh was, at first, soft. A chuckle, a small, guttural one that only herself could hear, then she leaned her head back and it started to echo through the woods. She laughed at the situation, at herself, at the world, at Kyran. She laughed, and laughed, as everyone who was watching might have thought she was going to kill him. Yes, she was even laughing at you, you voyeur, you peeping tom, enjoying watching the deaths of kids.

She laughed out loud, she cackled like a witch. She was a witch, maybe. She wasn't able to die, she wasn't able to kill, she wasn't able to do anything, restrained to her own narrative she couldn't control. Her fates was already written in the lines of her faces and she realized it. She could do nothing to fight it so she accepted it.

Her gun was empty. Maybe she wanted it to be empty, or maybe it was an accident, but she was laughing because of it. The emptiness of her gun, the lack of bullets, the magazines sitting in her bag waiting to see use. She squeezed her gun, just to make sure she wasn't insane. The gun was empty, and she laughed and laughed and laughed.

She started to heave and to pant. As if she was spatting the last remaining of her laughs, she coughed them out to smile. She took a sharp breath then something weird happened. Her eyes went blind. Not black like in the tunnels she loved, but white as the brighest light she had ever seen. Her ears buzzed, her ears were ringing too. She couldn't hear anything. She still, softly, laughed.

Maybe that was death: a ringing in your ears for eternity.

((Miranda Millers continue from The Bad Bitches Club))
((GMing approved, but lemme know if I should change something.))

She barely slept.

To be fair, sleep was a hard thing to find here. It wasn’t even just the sense of paranoia. You know, most of the time she’d slept on the ground. But still, she had to be careful. She always had to be careful. It wasn’t like Saachi couldn’t chop her throat open while she was asleep, or Bunny couldn’t just snap and kill them both. Wasn’t it like that at the tar pits, too? Go to sleep, and you could possibly just… never wake up.

She wanted to trust Saachi. They were close, definitely, but… that shake in her arms, that raw nagging feeling in her head, like lukewarm stale soup sloshing about in her skull, told her to be careful. As for Bunny… Miranda didn’t know.

But they’d found themselves deeper into the forest. She wondered if there was going to be anything else useful. More bags? Maybe. Maybe they could go to the shipyard instead, or... something.

What she didn’t expect, though, was the smell of smoke. It’d been filling the air lately, but it seemed to get closer the deeper they got. Miranda glanced at Saachi for a moment. She wanted to say something, but...

Something moved. Her eyes flicked towards it.

She knew them.

Tina was a girl she didn’t like. She had this large family who swarmed the halls of P.J. Hobbs, and was quiet and weird. She bet no one liked Tina, either. And Kyran… he was alright, she guessed. Kind of quiet, but he wasn’t weird like Tina.

And she was pistol whipping him.

Miranda hesitated, but she knew what she had in mind. They were distracted, so…

Deep breath. She unzipped the heavy bag hanging off her shoulder. Miranda slowly slid out a flashbang, becoming aware of its cylinder shape. She looked at Saachi. Her gun was already up and ready. She looked back, and nodded. Miranda slowly nodded back. An unspoken agreement.

She slipped the pin onto her finger.

Homura Akemi, eat your heart out.

That thought popped into her head for a moment, but she brushed it aside.

Then, she threw, the pin coming loose.

She ran for cover for a moment, but only just in case. Miranda didn’t know that much about flashbangs. She did see Kyran look towards her and squirm away, though. Miranda slid her back against a tree, holding her fingers to her ears. Once they were distracted, she’d pull out her own gun. Then, she heard it. The grenade made a loud popping noise, and she looked up from her hiding place. Saachi’s gun cracked a moment later.

((Saachi Nidal continued from The Bad Bitches Club))

There was a strange relief to be had when she woke up the next day to the announcements, though they were soon replaced with a steely anxiousness by the end of the announcements. Danya's warning struck a nerve inside her. A reminder of the perpetual death sentence that she was under. She probably would lose it if she did nothing for another day. She refused to entertain the idea of leaving her life in the hands of her classmates again, so hurridly made preparations as soon as the announcement finished. She decided not to disturb Bunny who was still tired from the previous day. She did talk to Miranda, and it didn't take much convincing to have her join her in exploring the forest.

Miranda was better company than Jay ever was, even though Saachi could feel the cautiousness that emanated from her. It was hard to know where she stood with her good friend. She had hoped that things would've been like before. However, so much had happened that such a relationship was probably impossible to reach now. There would always be this tenseness between them, the understanding that only one of them was going to be alive by the end of this. She didn't talk much with Miranda, exchanging a few words here and there, but they kept mostly to themselves. She didn't really know what to say. Saachi would never admit it, but the distance affected her more than she would've liked.

Her ruminations were interrupted by the smell of smoke. Immediately, Saachi was on edge. Something bad was going on. She could feel it deep inside her. The presence of smoke also meant that people had to be nearby. It was too cold for it to be caused by nature. They were closed and she knew this was probably her best shot at finding someone. At assuring that she'd make it to the next day. She pushed on ahead, knowing that her potential targets were in sight.

It didn't take long to find her next mark.

It had been a while since she had seen Kyran. Not since he lost consciousness back at the ravine. She still enjoyed seeing him suffer misfortune after what he did to her at the beginning of the game. The fact that it was Tina that was administering it was irrelevant. Seeing the rough time he had helped justify her actions on the island. While she would hesitate to say that her time here had been pleasant, it was certainly better than what she had seen Kyran go through. That surely had to mean something.

Hearing Miranda's bag unzip, Saachi prepped her gun and looked at her. It looked like they were going to interfere this little gettogether. As much fun as it would be to watch Tina kill Kyran, Saachi had been out of action for too long. Plus, she never got to try out her new shotgun courtesy of Zubin. Looking from the flashbang to Miranda, Saachi nodded her head in confirmation. She was ready. When Miranda nodded back, a tingle of excitement zapped through her body. A dangerous grin spread across her face.

This was going to be good.

Moving behind cover, she closed her eyes and shielded her face as Miranda threw the flashbang. Her heart pumped in her ears as she heard it go off, the popping noise puncturing the air around them. Saachi gave it a few seconds and quickly moved out of cover, gun aimed at Kyran. Tina was in the way, but that didn't really matter. As long as one of them died, Saachi would be happy.

Saachi fired.

Kyran Dean's eyes narrowed.

It might have been construed as an unamused glare as Tina gloated in laughter from the pain and purposeful humiliation she inflicted and for that Kyran might have been thankful for the natural cover up.

In reality, he was looking past Tina as she cackled like a forest banshee, over her shoulder at what he thought was movement.

The first he saw was Miranda, lurking in the shadows of the trees and underbrush beyond Tina's view. Her presence alone wasn't all too concerning in itself as killing one person may have it's reasons, like Scarlett, but it was who she was with as cause for alarm.

Crouching next to her, shrouded with leaves was the diabolical grin of Chop Susie herself, with Miranda as her brand new Captain Ahab.

Kyran already knew what was about to happen. Which was why he was the first to move. His finger went to the zipper of his AK47's carrying case, slowly, quietly pulling it back as Tina continued to laugh over the noise.

A can of blinding light hit the ground and so did Kyran as he hit the ground running, behind some cover, shielding himself the best he could.

Tina Luz. Not so lucky. Blinded and temporarily disoriented. Swaying at the same spot she had been laughing. She was a sitting duck ready to be shot.

Peering back to Saachi, it seemed like she had the same thing in mind, shotgun up, ready for some fun in their general direction.

It thundered. A blast of lightning.

But at this moment Kyran felt faster than the speed of light.

His torso, shoulder, palms and forearms crashed into Tina Luz, pulling her down, shoving her a few feet out of harms way. Colliding into her much like Adonis had tackled him when she shot at them that first day. As it was, the blast splintered the bark of the tree trunk behind them.

"Go," Kyran speed-spoke, with increasing volume. "Move, move!"

Tina hadn't killed anyone. She hadn't killed him, when she clearly had the chance to. Even if she hated him, if he didn't see her eye to eye, she was undoubtedly the lesser evil. She didn't deserve to be a victim, not when there was still a chance for the innocent to get out alive.

Even if she was his nemesis.

He pushed her one way, he move the opposite way.

More bullets had probably went off at this point, but it didn't matter. His mind was already focused on an idea he had. Not to mention the fact he may have went partially deaf after the booming flashbang and shotgun round.

Grabbing the torch - Kyran was about to ruin the island happy face by giving it one jumbo monobrow.

The assault rifle he held was quickly unleashed. The sputter of bullets hit the canopy once again, although his aim was even more crooked this time, aiming a little lower at first before steadying it a little higher again.

Another large bough broke, perhaps already damaged from his previous stint. It crashed below along with several smaller branches. Kyran stopped for a moment, but squeezed the trigger once more for a diversion, as he pressed the torch flame to the fallen, leafy grouping of tree limbs which landed and littered the area meeting the debris he had left on that first day.

The leaves, branches, swiftly went ablaze, as flame and smoke poured then clouded the area.

Kyran aimed the gun and fired a spray inbetween the other girls. It was never meant to hit them. But darn if it didn't look like he was fighting back, but missing. That was the point though. Make them lose concentration, split them. Weaken the unit. Run.

Tina was on the other side. His side. Her gun was out, but for once it wasn't pointed at him.

...then she was on the ground then on her knees then pushed away.

That's what happened basically, but it was too fast for her to feel every details of them. At the beginning, she assumed Kyran had shot her and she was bleeding out but she was very alive. The blinding lights faded and she saw Kyran with his gun.

The gun wasn't pointed at her, however. She wondered why. She heard his gun, the same gun that ruined her day what felt years ago, firing at someone in the distance. She didn't understand who was the enemy, the greater enemy than her, the one who hurt him.

She started to move her head and the world spun around. She remembered seeing this. Where did she see this? She wondered, she didn't know, her brain was foggy.

Daniel.

It was with Daniel. Her best friend, the person she could called the closest to her true essence, he showed her an action move and a guy threw a grenade and it exploded and the camera started fading with strobbing lights and a ringing in the background like when you get hit on the ear. Flashbang, that was the name.

It makes sense, flashbang. It was a pretty word, flashbang, quick flash and loud bang. A really, really appropriate name for a weapon that dazed people. She looked at Kyran, he wasn't the one that threw it. He had a gun, he didn't need to throw it, and plus they were close to each other, he could just have shot her instead.

So, that was the person he was shooting, and he saved her. Why? She didn't know why but she was alive and that, for the best or the worst, was reality. She looked at her gun. It didn't load by itself, she needed to put a magazine in it. Her bag wasn't on her. She looked where she was and it was there, waiting for Tina to come back.

She sluggishly head to it, crawling. She didn't think about danger, and she was in the open and she didn't realize it. The flashbang really did that to the brain, really flashbanged it. Anyways, she heard gunshot and it landed near her, or rather around her. She looked toward them, the girls, and she smiled. She raised her middle finger and screamed, "Your mom's a bitch, Saachi."

She grabbed her bag and hid again. Behind cover, she realized she was bleeding. When she was tackled, her wounds on her guts opened and she felt it becoming wet. What a day, something was actually happening for once. She could count her hand the number of time something happened, and finally something was happening to her. She smiled.

She was still dizzy, so loading her gun was hard. Her fingers moved without wanting to do it but she shoved it in. It was okay, maybe? She looked at him, Kyran, he was taking cover and she wondered how he felt.

She opened her mouth, still smiling.

"Let's ruin their day."

Pull out the gun. Hold on to it tight.

Can you repeat Sebastien? Probably. Do you want to? No. Is it necessary? Of course. Miranda tightly squeezed her eyes as the gunshots continued. Only to open them a second later.

You can do this.

She heard them fire back. Miranda tightly squeezed onto her own gun, and pulled out from her hiding place behind the tree.

There was smoke, and the orange glint of fire, and-

Kyran and Tina. If the sound didn’t confirm it, the sight did. They were using their guns. Deep breath, deep breath. The smoke filled her lungs and strained her eyes, a lot like her thoughts.

She did what came intuitively.

She lifted her gun. Pulled the trigger. And-

Click. Click click.

Nothing happened. And Miranda’s face twisted to a look of horror. Oh. Oh no.

Miranda did the next thing that came to mind. She pulled her arm back, and, biting her lip, she threw the gun towards them. Please please please hit them in the head or something please. Even if not the head, maybe it’d be a distraction, or something to cripple them, or… please, just hit.

Frustration shot through her body as she saw Kyran dodge her shot. Goddammit, why couldn't Kyran just die already?

Saachi didn't bother responding to Tina's taunts with words. Instead, she grunted in frustration as she did her best to brush her off.

Her eyes opened wide as she threw herself behind the tree line for cover, catching a glimpse of Kyran's AK 47 and quickly putting two and two together. The sound of gunfire confirmed her suspicions as she instinctively curled up to protect herself, hearing bullets whiz above her.

Saachi was beginning to become disorientated and the flames weren't helping matters. The heat became oppressive as it swallowed her body alongside the smoke clouding her vision. She did her best to hold her breath, not wanting to inhale too much of the black smoke that threatened to invade her body.

Was Kyran going to get away again? She was so close, and so much stronger than she was before. The thought of losing him again, losing a potential kill to carry her to the next day, irritated her to no end. Saachi refused to be powerless, not after everything she did on the island. She was strong and she was going to win.

More bullets flew past her, but Saachi knew that she needed to remain calm. There was so much happening around her that it would be easy to lose herself to the craziness occurring around her. That's probably what Kyran wanted. She wanted to take a deep breath but knew that she would risk inhaling too much smoke if she did so. Instead, she took measured breaths, one or two coughs escaping her body due to the carbon monoxide invading her body. She couldn't just let Kyran and Tina continue to punish them.

She watched incredulously as Miranda tried to chuck her gun towards the pair, though whether it hit mistified her as the smog in the area started to obscure her vision. Squinting to see if there was any sign of Kyran or Tina, she took two shots at what she figured was signs of movement. It felt like an exercise in futility. She couldn't let this continue.

"Miranda, we need to move around the flames and towards them. Now. Keep close to me." Saachi instructed Miranda, holding her dress to obscure her mouth to attempt to stem the onslaught of smoke. Extending her hand out for Miranda, she waited for her to hold on before pushing forwards, keeping low to avoid the spray of bullets in their general direction.

"Awh!"

The blunt, solid surface of something bounced off Kyran's head, onto the grass behind him. Despite wearing a hat, it still hurt, but at least he wasn't dead.

It was another pistol whipping into him, but from afar. It wasn't Tina's which meant it belonged to one of them, one of their attackers. Was it frustration or something. There was virtually no other reason he could think of for any of them to blatantly gift him their weaponry.

Whatever.

"Thanks for the gun," he quickly shouted from behind the trees and this fiery shield.

Point was it was with him now, which means it was out of their hands. He grabbed it by the handle, pointed it to the ground and squeezed the trigger. Empty clicks were all that resulted. He didn't need to waste it, there was no ammo already.

Kyran stood behind the rising flame wall between him and their killer classmates - then tossed the pistol right into the center of their bonfire for them to see.

Then he followed it up with another quick burst of bullets, to scatter them even more. He was damn satisfied that a powerful firearm like this was in the hands of the 'good guys' and they could make a difference for once. Give the kids that gave in to these terrorist's sick game a taste of what it was like on the other side of danger.

Tina spoke, seemingly with the same thought out-loud. He couldn't believe they were on the same side now. But she was right. Saachi and Miranda had chosen the wrong Dean and Luz to mess with and they were now reaping the consequences at least for a while. He knew he couldn't underestimate an indiscriminate hunter like Saachi who had made her way through this game the way she had. There was a reason for that. She just knew how.

The fire grew, the smoke thickened to the point where it was hard to see, drying out his eyes a fair bit. For as much as it was useful to hamper Miranda and Saachi, it was becoming just as much of a disadvantage for Kyran and Tina.

Kyran stood up, realizing that his bag had a new puncture hole in it, water leaking, dripping through the canvas of the day pack. A water bottle had been damaged, but Kyran didn't have time to tend to that right now. He needed to get back with the others. To the lake. Figure out and carry through with the rest of Michael's Smiley Face Plan.

"Yeah," Kyran called out to Tina. "Let's ruin their day - by not dying - to these bitches."

He let loose a couple more shots then ran.

Straight to the head. Miranda saw Kyran reel back. It wasn’t the same as a bullet, somewhere in her racing mind told her, but it could be enough.

Her eyes flicked again. Saachi looked incredulous, as if she… didn’t believe she did that. For a moment, Miranda felt self-conscious. But then Saachi barked out an order. Towards them, around the flames.

Got it.

Miranda bit her lip as she reached for Saachi’s hand. Her body still ached, especially the leg. But she had to keep moving, keep moving. No matter what.

Around the flames, away from the bullets. It was both easy and difficult to do.

She heard Kyran speak up, and lift the gun. It was the gun she threw. For a moment, she felt a jolt when she heard him speak up. But he pointed down, and click click clicked aimlessly, just like she had before.

“It’s empty you idiot,” she called out.

She had no idea why the ground, but that was something to wonder about later. When smoke wasn’t choking her, when things were taken care of. Another eye flick, this one irritated by more smoke. Kyran had started firing with his gun again. She heard something whizz past her head, heard ringing in her ears from how close it was.

He was getting away.

Miranda, despite the smoke in her eyes, felt herself seethe. It wasn’t just the leg.

“After him,” she growled.

And they followed. She couldn’t move that fast because of the leg, but she still moved fast enough.

Saachi couldn't help but giggle to herself at Miranda's outburst. Maybe it was the startling lack of priorities when surrounded by suffocating smoke, but Saachi appreciated the cheekiness, especially in this life-threatening situation, especially since her ire was directed at Kyran.

At this point, Miranda and she were on the same wavelength. They both wanted to take Kyran down and they weren't going to make it easy for him.

Nodding in response to Miranda, Saachi pushed through the smoke and begun the pursuit of Kyran.

He wasn't going to get away.
