It's a butterfly whose wings span the world

Sophie and Clio, ask to join

These are the woods on the island’s northern coast. The trees run nearly all the way to the sea, allowing only a thin stretch of beach, which disappears altogether depending on the tide. The trees here are largely coniferous, and are in good health, bolstered by a number of wet years and their proximity to the ocean. These woods are largely fairly dense, though clearings are abundant and comparatively-sparse undergrowth leaves them fairly easy to traverse.

It's a butterfly whose wings span the world

((Sophie McDowell continued from Why don't you have wings to fly with like the swallow so proud and free?))

Sophie quietly stared at the body of Jeanette on the ground. It appeared no one came near Jeanette since she first set her body up, but that didn't mean she was left undisturbed. The branches and flowers were all still in place, as were the "JB" rocks on her body, but there had been some preying on Jeanette.

Sophie could see some flies buzzing around her body. Even though she had done her best to cover the gunshot wound, there were a lot of flies and insects near it. The flower she placed there was starting to fall out, and Sophie was sure the flies were beginning to breed near the injury. She could also tell that Jeanette's skin tone was starting to change colors, becoming more pale and disgusting as her body shut down.

Now Sophie was glad she at least covered Jeanette's face.

"Well, there she is," she said to Clio.

Sophie and Clio had spent all of yesterday walking. After a bit of a navigational goof, they made their way to the lake. They had to rest as it was dark by then, but neither of them were able to get much sleep. Guard duty was a bit hard when it meant Sophie could just run away from Clio, or that Clio could just murder Sophie without caring to see Jeanette.

The announcements finally forced them both awake. Much to Sophie's horror, Bunny had killed someone. Sophie didn't know Everett Taylor that well, other than knowing he was someone who also killed, but it was still horrible to know Bunny had moved up to killing. Maybe that would help convince Clio that Bunny was dangerous.

Other than that, Katarina and Saachi got more kills, and more areas were off limits. Fortunately, the woods were still open, so Sophie could lead Clio to Jeanette. After the announcement, they walked around the lake until Sophie could find the rock she sat on back when she met Jeanette. There, she was able to approximate where in the woods she ran off, and they made their way through. After a bit of a walk, they found Jeanette's body.

"It's as I said," Sophie said. "Bunny shot Jeanette, and Jeanette asked me to choke her to death. You can see evidence to both."

"Do you see now, Clio? I killed Jeanette, but I'm not a murderer. I'm not going to be a murderer like Katarina or Saachi, so you shouldn't be afraid of me."

((Clio Gabriella continued from Why don't you have wings to fly with like the swallow so proud and free?))

Burned out.

Jason was dead, Jasmine was dead. Jeanette was still dead. People she wanted dead were dying but it didn't make anything better. She felt unsatisfied, denied any chance at her own vindication. She wanted to hurt them for hurting her friends, hurting her.

But she felt dead herself. Sophie and her and both slept near each other, mutual distrust making it a miserable time. Clio was exhausted and when the announcements came on she just wanted to roll over and die. Every time she got worked up, lost her temper, went after someone or wanted to, it fizzled. She had had periods of anger or despair at home, duh. But not like this. Everything set her off, nothing was resolved, and she had nowhere to go to recharge.

She was fatigued physically and mentally. But if nothing else, she needed to know if Sophie was lying or not. As they moved on, she was watching for signs of nervousness, waiting for Sophie to bail, try to get away. If she was biding her time or trying to ambush Clio, well, Clio was stronger and wasn't weighed down by her weapon.

That kept her going until they found the body.

There was temptation to see Jeanette's face, move away the cover. Clio just stood there, staring at her friend's corpse. Dead for some time, clearly, and she had clearly been positioned this way for a while judging from the state of the flowers. And Bunny had killed someone with what sounded like a gun, and the wound on Jeanette's shoulder was clearly a bullet wound.

"It's not fair."

Clio trembled slightly, staring down at the corpse. It wasn't fair. How was she supposed to hate Sophie if she hadn't done anything wrong? How was she supposed to do anything if the people she hated were innocent.

"I hate everything." Clio said, voice wavering, eyes dripping. "I hate it."

((James Mulzet running away from I'd Rather be at the Aquarium.))

James was panting as he ran, sweat dripping down his face. A day. That long nosed prick made him waste a day looking for him. Meanwhile people have been dying, stealing and doing god knows what while James just ran. He stil had his grenade launcher, but outside of that, zilch. Nothing.

He stopped by a tree to rest up. His breathing ragged. he had spent the last day just running. Running was not his forte, especially not after years of ignoring exercise outside of the occasional walk. There was so much focus on the academical that James never really thought of it as that important. he was busy with the future. His future.

Once his breathing calmed and the buzzing in his head stopped, he heard voices. Familiar voices. James stood up and walked towards them carefully, always keeping his launcher at point. He could still intimidate with it.

He clung to the tree closest to them, clinging to his gun like a safety blanket as he listened. The voice was clear now. It was a voice he hoped he wouldn't hear. Not since that day. His breathing turned frantic again as he thought of waht to do, leave was obviously the best option, that's what he should do.

He didn't.

James didn't know what compelled him to move out of cover, guess there was still a part of him that wanted to see her again. Before either of them died.

Sophie turned to look at Clio. She had to see what the girl thought about seeing the body. Sophie couldn't imagine what Clio felt right now. Jeanette was her friend, and to see the girl dead couldn't be something easy to handle. Even with the memorial, it was still a dead body that was slowly being reclaimed by the earth. Sophie continued to stare at Clio, hoping to see what the other girl was experiencing.

Finally, Clio spoke. Clio couldn't handle the sight. It looked like being on this island for four days was finally weighing down on her. Sophie watched as Clio started to cry.

Before this island, Sophie would have easily gone over to hug Clio and comfort her. But now, she felt hesitant. The girl had held her hostage for nearly a whole day and assumed the worst about her. Clio only did that because she didn't know the truth about what happened to Jeanette, so Sophie should have been able to forgive her. It should have been easy to comfort her, but Sophie wasn't sure what to do.

She slowly opened her mouth and reached out her hand. She was close to putting it on Clio's shoulder, but something wouldn't let her stretch her arm out completely. Before Sophie could do anything, she heard a voice call out for Clio.

She turned and saw a boy standing nearby with some sort of weapon. Was he also a friend of Jeanette? Sophie clutched the sledgehammer, almost instinctively.

By the time Clio was almost done whimpering, she'd heard her name a second or two ago. Using her free wrist to rub tears from her eyes, Clio squinted slightly at the approaching figure.

Oh.

--

She'd meant to be nicer about it at the time.

She'd been messaging a guy, Nathan, a friend from another school she'd become close to, but it had been been grating at the last strands of patience she'd been hanging onto for this moment.

James wasn't her usual kind of guy, but in a good way. He'd been nice when she'd gotten mad for crashing into him, and they'd made up over it later when she realized just how freaking smart he was. He was cute in a nice, kinda dorky way, and she'd been feeling a lot better since her last breakup, so maybe she could do better with someone different.

It'd kind of worked, for a little while. They were both into the sciences and learning and he'd coerced her into watching a couple horror movies without her screaming a ton. How embarrassing. They'd done the typical lunch dates and such too. She'd been quick to get a little more intimate, not like sex or anything but just a little physical. He'd been new to that, and she'd not wanted to push it, but he'd seemed fine with it.

School was a drag, of course, but now, sitting at the park bench rechecking her text history again, it made her realize just how bad it was. It seemed like countless messages had gone unnoticed, plans cancelled after she'd already gotten ready, and when they'd been together he'd been so distracted.

It became obvious to Clio that she wasn't his priority. That had hurt. She'd spent a day or two worrying about it, trying to piece her feelings together over it. She'd been talking to someone, a someone she was texting now, and he'd made his thoughts clear. If he didn't put Clio first, why was she putting so much energy into him?

She could've stopped there, but for some reason she kept letting him talk, responding to his messages. He'd been rallying her, she'd thought. She wasn't angry or hurt, just fired up to stand up for herself.

Clio saw James arrive. She finished her last message to Nathan-'wish me luck'- and stood up to face him. It wasn't just the lack of contact, now it became the flippancy, the excuses, everything. When she walked away, she tried to smile, feel freed up to find someone who could themselves her her.

She didn't smile. And they hadn't spoken a word to each other since.

--

All that came back to her as she looked James in the eye. It barely registered that he had a bazooka or something. All she could think of was how angry she'd been, how hurt she'd felt, lonely and desperate. How she'd hooked up with that Nathan for a month and a half before it became apparent that he was really just after the sex. Clio had severed ties there, too.

It seemed so stupid now, months later, everything in perspective. Had she really given up on James for that asshole? It was his fault, too. It was so bullshit, that she'd let someone get to her like that and think he had her best interests in mind. Really he'd just had her boobs in mind. Such a load of trash.

By the time it'd all made sense, Clio had declared herself single until graduation, and she'd never really brought it back up with James. It would make things worse, she thought, if she couldn't rekindle the romance but still asked for forgiveness. She put the issue out of mind, and moved on.

And now she was standing there, flush-faced and teary-eyed, and he was looking at her like she'd fallen out of the sky onto a trampoline. It was absurd. Was the murder and violence here not enough? Did she need to bring her personal issues in, with Panya dying and now James?

Clio looked at him, silently trying to speak as she fumbled the machete into her torn skirt slot at her thigh. She rubbed her eyes, wiped her nose, and blinked. "Hi, James. You're not hurt or anything, are you?"

Great start.

And there she stood, much like she did back then. Sure, grimier and more tired looking, but there she was like. He hadn't heard her name on the announcements so she had to be safe right?

"It's good to see you, Clio." James couldn't help but smile at her. he didn't know why exactly, the last time they talked weren't pleasant to say the least, maybe because it's the first friendly face he'd met in this godforsaken place who hadn't pointed a gun or shot or stolen from him. He could let his guard down. If only for a bit.

"Me? Hurt? Nah, I'm fine. Just looking for someone..."

There was someone else there as well, another girl. Blonde, didn't look to be in much better shape than Clio. He'd seen her around school, did her hair up with a bandanna and sang in the choir. What was her name again? It was something with S...

Sophie clutched her hand close to her chest, keeping the sledgehammer down by her side. She wasn't sure who this guy was, but from his attitude, he seemed to know Clio. He seemed to be in good spirits, so maybe it was something positive.

She glanced down at Jeanette's body. Maybe this guy was a friend of Clio's from back home. Was this why they had to come back to Jeanette? Was Jeanette sending Clio a friend?

Sophie looked back to the guy.

"I'm Sophie," she said. "And um...we came to pay respects. To Jeanette here."

He smiled. He had a nice smile. It didn't matter much anymore, but it was true.

"Uh, yeah." Clio looked back at Sophie. She didn't have the energy now to throw her to the wolves, or even just to James. "She's, was, my friend and..." Clio sniffled.

"But yeah. Who are you looking for?"

She had forgotten what conversations were like. Normal ones, without threats or hatred or breakdowns or anything. This was hardly normal sure, but it was the closest she'd gotten since she'd been here, basically.

So Sophie was her name. James was sure he’d heard it before, probably at school or something like that. And talk about elephant in the room. James hadn’t noticed the corpse til either of the girls pointed it out. Jeanette Buendia was it? She died a while ago, first day it seemed. Wasn't hard of a guess judging by the insects and the horrible smell. Who was it that did it? Sophie someth-

He looked at the blonde girl again apprehensively. Something clicked in his mind. Sophie. McDowell. She killed Jeanette. And yet were there to pay their respects to someone she killed? And on the first day no less… The announcements said something about requests or favors about it, like she asked to die. But they could be lying about that right? He wouldn’t put it past them to help a killer a little bit. At the same time, Clio called Jeanette a friend, James could remember that about her from school and their time together. So she must know this right?

James didn’t like this. Not one bit.

As all these thoughts rumbled around in his mind, he could vaguely hear Clio asking him who he was looking for. James had not thought out an answer to this, he never thought he’d encounter anyone who was actually friendly. A day alone would do that to someone.

A whole day alone, just because of one person. He’d make sure to pay him back in full.

Starting now.

“Theodore Fletcher. He uh... stole from me and shot... Damion. Y’know Damion Castillo? Crippled him, poor guy. I left him with a few folks I trust before… y’know.”

Clio raised an eyebrow. She hadn't thought of the first day here, or at least, not her arrival. Until now, it hadn't mattered much.

"I saw him the first day. He was bawling his eyes out, yeah." Clio looked to Sophie, then back at James. "He didn't seem the type." He didn't. Clio was burned out, sure, but she wasn't stupid. James wasn't this insecure at school. He was nervous.

Why?

She wiped her eyes, the last remnants of makeup probably long smeared and dried off. "Who's he with? Damien, I mean." Clio paused for a moment. "You're chasing Theo, you said?" She looked at Sophie again.

"Are you going to kill him?"

Clio didn’t seem to believe him about Theo, apparently jackass spent the time she saw him crying his eyes out. James wouldn’t be surprised, that’s how he met him too, and if he had his way, how he’d leave him. But that left a little bit of a problem.

Well, two problems as it turns she wants to know who he left Damion with. Oh and the easy question of, y’know, were James killing him. No, course not. James was gonna take him out on a five course meal for nicking his shit. He looked at her disbelievingly.

“I’m not gonna kill him! I just want my stuff back is all.” He chuckled nervously after that, this conversation was going to end well. “C’mon Clio, I wouldn’t do something like that.”

Then came that question. The question that he had no real answer for. Who the fuck did he know who were liable to do that… shit, uh, just pull some names and hope for the best.

“Uh, y’know. Folks like… Yumi, yeah! A-and Sarah and a few others…” He looked behind himself as he talked. James felt his breathing growing slow, the atmosphere from a minute ago was gone. A feeling washed over him like he was being watched or something akin to that.

He was nervous. Clio didn't like it.

There was something wrong. There was an inaudible static as she paused, split-second, to deliberate. Bzzzt

What had happened? Would James abandon someone like that? Go off alone? He didn't seem the type. But what else?

If he hadn't left Damion with two other people (she cared less about the names he gave) why would he say he had? Was Damion really injured? Or had something else happened there?

Bzzz

Jeanette had died, but that hadn't turned out like it had seemed it would. Sophie killed someone, her friend, but not out of malice or selfishness, right? Bad people don't have to be killers, Jason had been a horrible person but he hadn't killed anyone.

James was breathing weird, stuttering, avoiding her eye. He was a horrible liar. A liar. Clio tensed up, brandishing the machete as it seemed to leap into her hands when she reached for it. She narrowed her eyes. A familiar spark returned.

Bzzzzzzzz

"You're lying." Clio said, almost questioning in tone. Then, her grip on the sword tightened and she snarled, "You're lying! What did you do?!"

She stepped back, dropped to a fighting stance. "What happened and why are you-" Clio took a trembling breath. "Don't you lie to me!"

zzzzzzzz

Everything was going wrong. Why was everything going wrong for him? He could have had this. They could have teamed up and he would have no crazy people to worry about....okay Sophie was a mystery since she's a murderer, but she seems fuckin chill compared to the rest of the nutcases.

The sword was out and she was yelling at him. It felt eerily like that time that now felt like eons ago. She called him a liar. She thought he killed someone or worse. He was about to respond, yell at her for the accusations when everything got worse.

He barely saw it coming. Her blade went right for his face, barely got his hands up. His fingers wrapped around the blade desperately trying to hold it, curled both hands into fists trying to hold it. Bad idea. She shimmied it, cut his hands and forced it towards him and it flew towards his face, he turned and fell.

James fell on his face and he could feel the blood coming from the side, he felt the pain start. He quickly turned around and looked at Clio who barely looked like Clio more, she looked like the woman from Monster instead. Screaming and yelling and the sword was on top of him again! She got on top of him quicker than a madwoman, trying to force the blade in as he grabbed the blade once more and held his ground.

There was still static, white noise as things ran through her head. Panya's bloody throat, Jason' cocky smirk, Lance in despair, Sophie beside her, Jeanette below her. She was sick of things happening to her, sick of reacting. She was in control now.

Bzzzt

He was a liar and a killer, or he would be. She was going to fuck him up.

Clio swung the blade at his head, towards his face. She felt the momentum stop, colliding into giving flesh. Too much give; he'd blocked it with his hands. Freak. "Agh, fuck you!" Clio shrieked, as James tried to grab her sword from her. She jostled it, trying to cut it out of his hands if necessary.

Bzzzzzzz

He fell down, trying to turn and run. He rolled over, hands in the air, looking terrified. Clio bared her teeth and dropped to one knee, raising the sword over him, point downward.

Bzzzzzzz "Go to hell!" She screamed zzzzzzzz Clio drove the point towards his face zzzzzzzz- crunch

Sophie, forgotten, had slammed her hammer into the side of Clio's head. She toppled over onto her other side, expression frozen in anger before quickly thawing to shock. There was a flash of light, and there was pain, fear, anger, noise, regret, disgust and despair.

Then, mercifully, there was only silence.

Everything seemed so fine. James was just explaining who he saw on the island, but that didn't settle well with Clio. Sophie was curious how Clio knew James was lying. Maybe he was just going to get his stuff back. Sophie should have just proven to Clio that people had good intentions to do bad things on this island, but the other girl didn't seem to get that somehow.

Before she knew it, Clio was rushing James with her machete. Sophie couldn't do anything but stand there in shock.

"Clio! Stop!" she cried out.

The words seemed to be completely ignored. Clio tried to stab James, but he caught the blade. All that seemed to do was hurt him further. James was on the ground, and Clio looked prepared to finish him off. Sophie let out a whimper as she saw Clio get into position.

It was then Sophie felt the weight of the sledgehammer in her hand. She looked down at it, realizing the head was near Jeanette's body. This was just like the lake. Sophie tried to talk her way out of a dangerous situation, and it failed miserably and led to Jeanette's death. She tried to talk to another dangerous person, and that resulted in Lance dying. Now she was back to pleading with another dangerous girl, and that girl was about to kill another innocent person.

Sophie gritted her teeth and quickly moved towards Clio, swinging the sledgehammer back. She hated what she was about to do. She hated that she was pushed to this point. She hated that she was betraying her family and faith by doing what she was about to do. But she didn't have time to think. Clio was about to bring the blade down onto James with the intention of killing him. As much as she hated this action, Sophie still knew she had to do something.

Bunny wanted her to be passive and lose her supplies. Kris wanted someone to talk to but not to travel with. Jasmine wanted to kill Lance over nothing and then threaten Chuck. Clio wanted Sophie to be the epitome of evil so she could have a reason to kill her. Everyone assumed the worst about Sophie and refused to see why she would do the things she did, and all it did was lead to more chaos and more devastation.

So as Sophie swung the sledgehammer forward, connecting and shattering the side of Clio's head, she finally resigned. As she watched Clio's lifeless body fall to the side, her blood starting to escape through the fractures in her skull, she knew they had won. Sophie had just murdered someone, not because they asked her to kill them, but because Sophie decided they had to die. James was free to declare Sophie a hero or a monster based on this action, she could see him choosing either.
