I Jumped Out and I Pranked Him to Death with a Tire Iron

These are the woods on the island’s northern coast. The trees run nearly all the way to the sea, allowing only a thin stretch of beach, which disappears altogether depending on the tide. The trees here are largely coniferous, and are in good health, bolstered by a number of wet years and their proximity to the ocean. These woods are largely fairly dense, though clearings are abundant and comparatively-sparse undergrowth leaves them fairly easy to traverse.

I Jumped Out and I Pranked Him to Death with a Tire Iron

((Miranda Millers continued from Red or Dead))

There was something dark about taking someone’s things after they’ve died. For a while, Miranda was hesitant to open the bag she found. She wasn’t sure what she’d find. Some proof of who one of the boys were before they fell off the cliff? A weapon? Nothing useful?

But eventually, she’d caved. With a held breath, she’d unzipped it. It wasn’t much different than the other bags. There was a first aid kit, some food, and some water. There was the map, the compass, and the flashlight. However, there was something else.

She’d picked one up in her hands, inspecting it. Miranda had seen flashbangs before. Usually it was in movies or video games. Didn’t Homura Akemi have them as part of her stolen arsenal? Probably. It was funny, she couldn’t remember right now. Maybe it was because survival was more important than anime. It was a pretty common thing in FPS, too. They were useful, since they blinded opponents. But, she knew that the real thing could be deadly under the right circumstances.

Miranda had stared at the tube-like bomb in her hands for a few minutes. Her stomach clenched. But, she unzipped her own black duffel.

She took everything that she felt she needed. The grenades were gone, so was the food and water. The first aid kit, the flashlight, and the compass were left behind, still tucked inside the bag. It’d been left next to a tree, right near the edge of the forest.

Her black tote, the one they gave her, was a little heavier. It didn’t help her shoulders much, especially since she still had her peach handbag from before. Before she saw Richard and the other boy, she’d thought about putting everything into the black duffel, and tossing her bag away. It’d be only one bag to deal with, and the black tote seemed bigger. But, even now, she was still a little hesitant to get rid of it, even if it was impractical to deal with two bags. Maybe it was just feelings.

Miranda, however, had to stop and rest. She’d been walking for a while, so her feet ached a little. She was used to exercise, but even then, it was good to rest her feet. Besides, Miranda also felt hungry. Luckily, not only did she have more than enough of the food they’d given them, but she’d also packed a lunch for the trip.

So, she sat on a stump, eating a sandwich that she’d packed. It was a ham, avocado, and cheese sub, with wheat bread. It wasn’t enormous, so it wouldn’t satisfy her hunger completely. But it was food that was also completely hers. Sure, bread, crackers, and energy bars kept you full, but it wasn’t a sandwich. She kept a water bottle next to her food, just to help wash it down.

In her lap, she had a map laid out. It was late afternoon, and it was getting more and more dim. The sky had turned from a pale blue to a vivid orange. There was just enough light to read, but she knew that she had to have a plan sometime soon. That plan had to involve shelter.

It seemed like the island was full of buildings, though she had to be sure no one would beat her to it. There was a cabin, which would likely have a bed, but other people likely had the same idea. Mess hall might have had preserved food or something, but again, people might have thought of that. She had no idea what “ruins” were, but the lighthouse, warehouse, and parish seemed decent. Thing was, they were on the other side of the island. She might have to risk it with the cabin.

Something snapped, like someone walking on twigs. Miranda lifted her head to the right. Nothing was there. Maybe she was imagining things, or maybe it was something.

Hesitantly, she took another bite of her sandwich. But her gaze hadn’t moved.

The tire iron was placed on the stump next to her, ready to be used if she needed it.

((Brigid Paxton continued from Hi Kids! Do You Like Violence?))

Brigid started to slow down, panting as she did. Once she came to a stop, she bent out and spat onto the ground. She had been running for quite a bit after fleeing the cliff area. She was back in the forest again, so she must have run quite a distance.

She arched her back a bit and stretched. She was glad she made it away from that area quickly. She didn't expect Jasmine to go crazy like that, but she was just glad she wasn't the target. Brigid remembered that they'd announce who had died, so she'd probably know what happened back there soon.

Brigid looked around. She wasn't sure if Chris was nearby or if there was anyone else around, but maybe that was okay. She had blindly trusted someone and they assaulted some jerk. Maybe it was better for her if she stayed hidden in the woods, away from the rest of her peers. Maybe then she'd have a better chance or surviving this hell.

((Christopher Schwartz continued from Hi Kids! Do You Like Violence?))

And if it was bad for Brigid? At least Brigid did track. At least Brigid was used to running. Christopher was neither of those things, and it showed. It showed in the way he had he to lean against a tree to support himself. It showed in the way he had to clutch at his stomach to ease the cramp; not an easy thing to do with a sharp-ass club in your grip, by the way.

It showed in the fact that he'd slowly lost sight of Brigid as they ran. She was faster than him, but... he was sure she'd gone this way. And if not? Well... that was unfortunate, but not exactly a grievous loss.

He had to stop when he found himself surrounded by trees. Brigid should be around here. He held up his hand to his mouth, about to call her name, but stopped himself just in time. Best not to attract attention to himself here, where he could barely see more than a few feet in front of him.

Instead he walked forward, past a group of trees, right into the view of a girl sitting on a tree stump, eating a sandwich.

Well. If there was one thing that Christopher knew with certainty, it was that this girl was definitely not Brigid.

More cracking, more snapping. Then, someone showed up. Miranda’s hand slid on top of the tire iron, her eyes glaring.

Oh, Christopher Schwartz. Lovely. He was another nerd. You know, the type that’d play DnD, learn computer science, and all that. Oh, and he had some kind of spiked club thing. Miranda’s eyes couldn’t help to be drawn to that.

She stood up and swallowed, a crumb hanging on her lips. Her right hand had the tire iron, while the other still held a slowly smooshing sandwich. She kept staring, feeling her nails once again dig into her palms.

He wasn’t even alone, either. There was a shape hanging nearby, just a few feet away. So, great. Two people.

Miranda’s eyes darted between the two, before she finally spoke.

“Schwartz” she asked. "Do you really think that's smart?"

Her features got tight and knitted. Maybe he, or even they, were planning on sneaking up. Maybe that was it. They’d sneak up, and hit her with that club thing. And then it’d be over.

She wouldn’t let it be over.

Brigid perked up when she heard someone talking nearby. She turned and noticed there was a girl looking at Christopher. It looked like he was close after all, just separated slightly by the trees. The other girl had apparently noticed Brigid as well.

Brigid gulped and tightened her grip on the bec de corbin. The girl sounded slightly threatening. She also looked threatening with the tire iron in her hand. The sandwich in her other hand didn't make her look threatening, but it was a detail that caught Brigid's eye.

Brigid stepped slightly closer to the other girl, keeping a distance between them.

"We were just running away from someone," Brigid said. "There was a fight that escalated into gunfire. We were just trying to get away."

And she had a tire iron.

Christopher's grip on his club tightened. Miranda asked him a question. It was true that what he'd just done wasn't exactly wise, but he'd just run away from a former ally who had beaten down a guy and then shot at some other guy, and he was looking for his remaining ally, so he wasn't exactly thinking ahead of time, here.

But he wasn't going to say that. Even if he'd wanted to, he wouldn't have been able to. There were footsteps behind him, and then Brigid's voice.

She put it way more elegantly than he ever could, so he simply pointed toward her, and uttered, "Yeah, basically what she said."

Miranda’s eyes snapped to the other person when she stepped forward and spoke up.

Great. So she had to deal with Frigid Brigid too. Yeah, Miranda knew her from track team. She was quiet, and arrogant, and nobody really liked her, as fair as she could tell. Maybe they did, but you know what she meant. Why would Frigid Brigid hang around Schwartz?

She got her answer, though.

People really were serious about this, then. If they were shooting, then they probably weren’t hunting deer or something. Unless, of course, they were lying. That was always a possibility. Maybe it was an excuse of some kind. Something to lower her guard.

Miranda remembered Richard for a moment, but she went back to business.

Schwartz agreed with Brigid. Miranda let her gaze flick between the two, then to their weapons. She didn’t like that spear-thing as much as the club, either. She kept gripping tighter and tighter on the tire iron. Crumbs fell from the sandwich, but she wasn't paying attention.

“Oh, yeah? Who? Who were you running from?”

"Jasmine," Brigid said.

"She attacked Paris, and a brawl started with several other people."

Brigid stepped a little closer to Miranda.

"Yeah, so there's no need for things to be so intense. We can be on our way if you'd prefer."

"Yeah," Christopher added, "We don't have to stay here."

If Miranda wanted them to leave her alone, he assumed that both of them were fine with leaving. After all, antagonizing someone in this situation wasn't a smart thing to do, especially if that person had what could be used as an actual weapon.

Brigid had moved forward which put her between him and Miranda. But Brigid had the longer range weapon, so being the closer one wasn't smart. If Miranda suddenly attacked, then...

He couldn't tell her to move back, either. The tension would skyrocket, if he did that, and he didn't even know if it could go any higher until it broke.

What did that leave? The two of running away, that was the safest option. Would Miranda chase them if they did? Probably not. Miranda looked like she wanted to be left alone.

That's what it looked like.

Christopher hoped his assumption was correct. If not...

“Jasmine?”

Miranda's eyes narrowed. Okay, so... guess that meant Jasmine made her choice too, then. Some part of her wanted to be skeptical, but then again, Jasmine... well, wouldn't put it past her. She was ruthless, and temperamental, and everything that came with that.

And then there was Paris.

Weren't they a thing for a while? Wasn't he a massive douche?

She had to take a moment to process it.

Yeah, he was. So... she'd have reason to. Miranda wanted to be surprised, but honestly, she knew she shouldn't, not too much.

But they kept speaking. Talking about how they could leave if they wanted to. But that came with a massive contradiction.

Brigid stepped forward. Closer to her.

Miranda's heart started up faster. She became more aware of the tire iron in her hand. The sandwich dropped into the dirt. But, instead of paying attention to it, she took one foot forward for balance.

Like a reflex, the tire iron swung.

Brigid didn't know what Miranda's relationship with Jasmine was, but whatever it was, it resulted in a tire iron to the forearm.

Brigid had walked so that she could get around Miranda and closer to Christopher, but in her attempt to do so, Miranda dropped her sandwich on the ground and swung her weapon around. Brigid tried to raise the bec de corbin to block it, but she wasn't as fast as Miranda. The tire iron connected with Brigid's forearm, causing Brigid to cry out as loud as she did on the beach.

Brigid stumbled a bit and fell to the ground, dropping the bec de corbin. She quickly looked back up, worried that Miranda would continue her assault. She felt everything start to slow down as she watched the next move from her opponent.

"What-!"

Run. That had been the plan. If Miranda attacked, the safest option would have been to run. Get the fuck out of dodge with all their bones intact, with minimal damage. That had been the plan.

Then Miranda swung, and connected. Then Brigid stumbled, dropped her weapon. Then Brigid fell.

And the plan was pretty shot. He couldn't run, because he'd be leaving Brigid behind. He couldn't tell her to run either, because that might set Miranda off too. He wasn't sure what had done so the first time.

So... what did that leave? Standing there in shock wasn't going to help. He had to take her attention off of Brigid. But how? The only thing he could think of was to divert the attention to him, but...

That wasn't smart.

His mouth was getting dry. His look down at his ally on the ground. And then, almost as if on autopilot, Christopher charged toward Miranda, trying to tackle her.

Why?

The tire iron connected with a raised arm. Miranda saw Brigid fall to the ground a moment later, her eyes wide with fear. The spear thing had fallen out of Brigid’s hands, but she didn’t know if she was going to pick it up. Miranda felt herself shake, but she took another step forward. She braced herself, and lifted the tire iron a second time.

But something else happened. That something was Chris.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him dart towards her. Her head flicked in his direction. Her heart rate drummed in her ears, behind her eyes. It all was fast, too fast. But, on cue, the tire iron went for another swing.

This time, it was a bit higher.

((All GMing approved))

Brigid looked up and saw Miranda turn the tire iron towards Chris. Chris had charged at the crazy girl, but now he was getting hit with the tire iron as well. Brigid clenched her teeth and reached for the bec de corbin. She couldn't just lay there and watch her ally get beaten to death. Brigid had done enough spectating; she needed to be active.

While Miranda was looking at Chris, Brigid swung the bec de corbin back, then, as hard as she could, swung it towards Miranda's leg. Brigid wasn't sure how hard she hit the girl, but from the way Miranda cried out and started to stumble, it must have done something. Brigid then realized this was her chance.

"Chris! Run!" she shouted.

Brigid pushed herself off the ground and ran towards Miranda. She held her elbow forward, connecting it with the other girl's back. Brigid watched as the girl fell forward and landed face first on the ground. Brigid ran past her and towards Chris, gesturing with her head to tell him where to go.

She clutched the bec de corbin as she ran off. The pain in her forearm was still ringing, but Brigid couldn't be bothered to check. Today had been quite a dangerous day, with Jasmine attacking Paris and Miranda turning a tire iron on the two of them. If this was how their class was going to be, Brigid needed to be careful.

It didn't go as planned. Miranda turned. That was according to plan. She swung faster than he had expected her to. All he could do was try to mitigate that damage, and he raised his arm to block the iron. He felt his shoulder take the brunt of the blow. Chris stumbled, rolling on the ground. He quickly got back up just in time to see Brigid bring Miranda down with the bec de corbin.

Brigid turned to him and told him to run, before pushing Miranda to the ground.

He didn't need to be told... hmm, nah. He already used that turn of phrase.
