Sin will pluck on sin

These are the woods on the island’s northern coast. The trees run nearly all the way to the sea, allowing only a thin stretch of beach, which disappears altogether depending on the tide. The trees here are largely coniferous, and are in good health, bolstered by a number of wet years and their proximity to the ocean. These woods are largely fairly dense, though clearings are abundant and comparatively-sparse undergrowth leaves them fairly easy to traverse.

((Continued))

The field of flowers left long behind she had moved deeper into the woods. She hadn't thought anymore about the encounter she had had with the girl who had skin the colour of peach.

There was no noticeable life for as far as her eyes could see or her hearing could reach. That didn't really matter because they weren't truly alive nor dead, they were trapped in between. Their status unknown until their inevitable ruination was broadcast for the world to see.

She was alive, physically, and she would remain that way until her heart stopped beating.

A simple distinction but one that was easy to miss.

There was a camera. She could see it high above her in one of the trees. It had a single purpose, to record the downfall of their class. A mocking lesson played out in technicolor.

She walked up to one of the others trees in the area and assessed its branches, reaching out and tugging at one to see if it would hold her weight. Once it proved stable she held it tight and pulled herself up. Sitting on the trees branch allowed her to see a bit more of the woods.

The forest almost reminded her of Sweden and her uncle, the man who had passed his love of skating down to her. There had been large expanses of nothing but uninterrupted forest there, providing the illusion that you could walk into them and leave the modern world behind. As if that was ever an option in the modern age. Stories were always told about people trying to go off the grid only to return once their phone ran out of charge.

Her and her class however were truly off the grid. Trapped on an island where its very existence could have been unknown, they were gone. The complete disappearance of nearly half a senior year, the second greatest trick ever performed and they were all participants whether they wanted to be or not.

She placed one of her legs on the branch so she could rest her arm on it.

She knew what the greatest trick ever pulled was.

There was no rush.

((Natali Greer continued from ((Oh MAN, Not This Again?))

Natali was hurting.

Natali was hurting bad.

She was hurting bad, but it seemed as if the pain in her knee had slowly subsided, as she continued her agonizing trek through the island. She just kept on putting one foot after the other, going forward. She had to keep moving, had to keep getting as far away as she could from the Showers. From Blaine. From Simon. She had, so that she was safe. At least, that's what she told herself.

In actuality, she was scared of what she was going to do if she ended up stopping. Now, though, she approached lush green trees, big tall ones, ones that she would've taken photos of if they weren't fighting for their lives. She just wished she could go back to Denton. Sure, it was kind of crappy at times, but she could live her life normally, not have to worry about shit like this.

Not have to worry about whether she was gonna survive the night or something. She stopped clumsily making her way further and further south, stopping for a moment, to see what was all around her.

She was in a clearing. That was good, right? Trees with cameras all around them, showcasing their demise and - wait, there were cameras? Oh, shit. Shit. Shit. Another one. She hoped her parents weren't watching, didn't see how their little Nat was desperate to live. She thought she could live with the shame, she thought so, but first she had to live.

She tried to steel herself, was about to give herself a pep talk, when she thought she saw a figure sitting on a tree. From this distance, she didn't know who was there.

Despite this, she waved. "Hello, you there? I'm not gonna hurt you."

She hoped that was reassuring. She hoped that she'd still be alive.

A voice called out from the distance, turning her head she saw the shadowed figure, a soon to be ghost that would be trapped on the island forever more.

The voice called in greeting, sounding hopeful that it would be welcomed. It added in that it came in peace and meant no harm. Meaningless words when not backed up by the appropriate action of inaction in the face of the entire reason they had been trapped upon their island prison.

To kill. To spread pain and suffering by proxy. As devious a plan as she could remember. A concentrated attack upon the hearts and minds purely because it could be done.

As before though there was little reason not to engage the voice. It didn't sound sure of the words it spoke even as they left its mouth.

She adjusted her perch on the branch, both legs hanging down, arms resting on her thighs, leaving her hands to hang free in the air.

"You can come closer."

You can come closer? Something, just something in that delivery shook Natali the wrong way, but she decided to heed the mysterious voice anyways. Maybe the voice had like, a machine gun or something, and she'd get filled with lead. That just made her more nervous, but maybe, maybe, she just wanted to talk? Natali just wanted to talk. She was tired, she was bruised, she just wanted to lay somewhere for a bit and sleep. Wait, what time had she slept the night before the trip? 1 in the morning? 2? She just had to make some touchups on a few photos, make sure they were great - she yawned. No, no no, she couldn't think about that now. She needed to be one hundred percent on the ball, if she wanted to live.

But couldn't she just rest for a bit? She wanted to allow herself that little bit of hope, just enough so she could sleep soundly at night.

She slowly started trudging forward again, towards the figure and the voice in the trees, who currently looked like a white-and-black blur. Another step, and she felt her knee begin to buckle once more. Fuck. She silently said an apology to God, before starting back up with a grunt of effort, but not before catching a glimpse of her - oh, Jesus. Her knee was badly bruised, it was black and blue, and she was pretty sure that meant it was already swelling, if what she remembered from Health class was correct. Getting closer, closer to whoever was up in those trees, maybe it was a friend, maybe it was an enemy, maybe it was....Kris Hartmann. Oh. Okay, she guessed. Probably could be worse.

Looking up so she had a better view of Kris, Natali smiled nervously, trying not to put too much pressure on her knee. "Oh, hi Kris. It's Natali." She felt as if an ocean wasn't wide enough to describe the awkward silence she guessed would follow soon after. "Well, it hasn't exactly been the greatest day for me. You?" She shrugged. Was there anything else she could've added to that statement, sounded friendlier? She just wished that her remark was enough to start a conversation or something, not a robbery. She kind of had enough violence for one day.

That was enough detail, wasn't it? Hopefully she wasn't get hit in the face by something. That wouldn't be very good. Not at all. Her hand shook as it moved closer to the zipper on her bag, swaying back and forth with a slight gust of wind. It was so close. So close.

((Adonis Alba continued from Sad Tunes))

Adonis was busy running his ass off, so he didn’t really pay attention to where he was going. In fact, he hadn’t even looked at his map yet. That didn’t matter too much, though. He was pretty sure that wherever he ended up had to be better than where has was before. It wasn’t like things could get much worse than having a gun pointed at him only a couple of hours after waking up.

His adrenaline faded as he returned to the woods, banking on the idea that even if the crazy armed girl was tailing him, he could lose her in the midst of the trees. She didn’t look that strong, and even though Adonis had been off the football team for a while, he could still run for days. Maybe not outrun a bullet, but he was pretty sure that he could outpace damn near anyone in class.

He slowed down at some random spot in the woods. Figuring this was as good a spot as any to take a load off after the morning he’s had so far, and not detecting anything dangerous nearby, he leaned against a tree, propping one foot against the base.

He needed a damn rest.

The voice belonged to a girl with cornrows, she knew who the girl was. As the girl moved closer it became obvious she was limping. That detail wasn't important in the grand scheme of things, many worse injuries would be suffered by many different people before the game they were a part of was complete. No one would be able to escape unharmed.

Their existence now was based around destruction, the torture of each other for no real purpose. A mirror of life at its most base and callous. Accept or die. Embrace or perish. Realise the choice now and act accordingly or try to run and hide from something as inescapable as the tide.

The girl with cornrows finally reached her and spoke. A reply did not leave her lips, for there was no reason. The girl would speak again, unable to stand the silence as it gnawed away at her like termites within a rotting wall, and she did.

She ran her eyes over the girl as she spoke, contemplating the reply she would give.

Then saw her hand moving shakily but steadily towards the zipper of the bag she carried.

"What are you getting?"

Well, silence, more silence, as the hand closest to her bag became closer, began to unzip and - Oh. Kris was asking what she was going to get in her bag. Natali grimaced. What could she say? She was gonna go out and get her gun? Somehow, she knew that probably wasn't going to end well for either of them, so Natali tried to force herself to calm down, still looking up at Kris. "Wa-water. I was just getting, some, uh, water from my bag. Want some?", She stuttered, trying her best to sound sincere. Smooth tensions over a bit? Once more, she became acutely aware of the cameras watching her every move, waiting to see if she was going to screw up or not. Just there, flies on the wall, a reminder of how she was trapped in this game. They'd probably see her murder and get murdered, and then it would just all come crashing down, and so GAAAAHHHHH- And was Kris sitting next to one? Why?

Kris was still looking down at Natali, seeming so distant and yet so close by. How could she be calm? How could anyone be calm? Yet, Kris seemed as cool as a cucumber or some other kind of pretty lame metaphor like that, just staring at her. She felt naked, even if she was wearing all the clothes she had packed for the aquarium trip. So exposed. Yet, the silence still hung between them, ready for something to pierce it. She idly shuffled her feet, trying to find something to do to go occupy herself. Better then getting shot at and beat, she guessed.

She was just about ready to go change the topic, something more innocuous, when she remembered.

Oh, the water. She had offered some, hadn't she? Quickly opening her bag, hearing the metallic sound of the zipper, she sifted through until she found what she was looking for, in the messenger bag she had put on top of everything else in the duffel. Including the gun. At least it looked like she wasn't blatantly lying, then. Grabbing the plastic bottle, she turned her head up once more, and began to wave the bottle at Kris, hoping that the girl would notice the bottle.

In case that wouldn't work, Natali shouted. "Here's the water! Want it?"

She hoped Kris would respond. It'd probably be better for all of them if that happened.

Adonis let out a strong huff of a sigh as he reclined against the tree. He wasn't usually the type to get sick of something quickly, but he could definitively say that he was one hundred percent done with this island, and it was barely even lunchtime. You could blame the parade of various jackasses that set all of this up for that, although Trumpet Boy and Crying Girl certainly didn't help.

Well, at least the trees were kind of pretty.

Of course, just as Adonis had managed to think about one slightly positive thing, he was interrupted by someone yelling about water. He just couldn't have even a moment's peace, apparently. She shifted position to look around the side of the tree, sneaking a peek at whoever the hell decided to be the next loud person to mess up his day.

Oh, it was some girl who was dressed way too brightly for the fucking hell they were in. He grunted, still feeling pretty pissed about... well, he had quite a few reasons, really. Point is, he was pissed enough to step out from behind his tree and raise his voice at her.

"Hey, you mind keeping it down? Some of us are kinda busy having shitty days right now!"

The girl was offering her water.

The lie was a weak one, its foundations already rotten even before the desperate insistence that is was just for water left it carrying more weight then it could support and the timbers creaking.

She knew all of this but she let the girl attempt to weave her web despite it missing key strands.

She was about to speak but didn't get a chance before a loud yell crashed through their conversation as if it was a bull. She recognised the voice and the person it belonged to was akin to a bull himself.

Regardless he wasn't important in that moment; seated a distance away from them and behind a tree he was limited to only being able to voice his displeasure and any displeasure he may have been feeling didn't matter. He was just wild animal left roaring into the wind in frustration.

Her hand reached down, accepting the offering and taking it from the girls hand.

As she did so she spoke directly to her.

"I know you're lying."

Well, okay, Adonis was kind of a jerk anyways, but Natali was pretty sure she didn't have time right now to deal with an ex-football bully saying she was way too loud. She had just gotten beat up by an attempted murderer, so it would've been very nice if hadn't just screamed at her. Seriously, rude. It was really, really rude, and she honestly didn't have time to argue with him. So, she needed to defend herself. Wasn't that the right thing to do? "Okay, okay, jerk, I'm so sorry for being loud, but I just got beat up by a murderer, okay? I think I have some right to be loud." She huffed, and frowned at him. Hopefully her anger could be felt through the tree he was sitting behind or something. Couldn't he just have some semblance of human decency? If they were going to die, she hoped it wasn't due to a lack of good manners.

It was probably too late for brevity, but she just hoped something could lighten the mood. Stop her thinking about the possible ways she could get butchered, maimed, killed, murdered, and just like die. She didn't know how much she could hope. All in all, Natali just really wanted to live and -

Oh. Kris took the bottle without saying a word. She supposed that was a good thing. Kris wasn't being really hostile, shots weren't being fired, and Alba, although he was being a gigantic jerk, didn't seem to want to beat Natali into the cold hard ground. Maybe she had somewhere that wasn't teeming with people trying to kill her?

She was still thinking about this when she heard Kris accusing her of lying. That stung, especially because it was true. Sure, sure, maybe she wasn't being truthful, but weren't the rules different now? Weren't they all fighting for the right to live? She stared straight back up at Kris. For a moment, the whistling of the trees and the leaves was all she could hear. Then, hesitantly, words flowed from her mouth. "M-maybe? So? What?"

They poured out, like a river to the sea.

[[Kyran Dean Continued From: Looking Out for Number One.]]

"Kris?"

Kyran looked up at the reason he had worked up enough courage to forego his vigilance and step out from between the trees and underbrush. It seemed like a tense situation developing, one he'd maybe avoid under different circumstances, but right there was a familiar colleague resting on the branches above.

It had been a while now since his run in with Saachi and perhaps a Judas by the name of Jay. He'd run until he was sure he was beyond dangers reach, despite dangers reach being all around them. Sometime along the way, he'd slowed down his pace, keeping an ear and an eye open for any sounds, anybody, and any body. Nothing, none except echoes of random barreling, tiny rattling, pops off in the distance, direction; who knows where.

The fresh crescent slit below his vision upon his face no longer dripped, sundried mid-way through his trek, remaining outlined by red. It was Saachi's gift, one he'd not soon forget. Two packs over his shoulder. The carrying-case had finally been unzipped, checked, cargo untouched and re-zipped. Knowledge was there that'd he'd need to give it a try - have it at ready eventually, but he not yet felt ready. Kyran had gotten something real, something spit fire, loaded with what appeared like endless artillery of ammunition. It would stay hidden till the time was right, unfortunately, none of it felt right. The only other thing he'd pulled out was bottle water to help him remain refreshed, not even a map, so he'd no idea where he was at. Coincidentally talk of bottle water had led here, to where he was, wherever, here was.

This was a forest, there had been voices. He'd heard a girl, sounded like she was shouting to herself, until the brash yell came out of nowhere. He was quite familiar with that one. Kyran had instinctively flicked the tip of his tongue out, tracing the ever-present line on his lip, a memento of moments back at school. Quaint.

He peered into the clearing, hadn't found who he'd expected. Natali Greer was here, usually a decent girl, how that would translate to this place had yet to be discovered. Her first conversation to an unknown location, then there was another, as she cast her eyes overhead. That's when he made himself known, a shallow slice through the slight tension much like that knife to his cheek. Solemn, a matching tone.

"What you doin' up there."

Adonis yelled, so the girl yelled back. It was a pretty effective method of communication, even if it meant that everyone in the damn woods could hear them. He did learn something, though. He apparently wasn't the only one who had shit luck so far. Of course, that also meant that there were more crazies running around than just the people he'd met, and that's wasn't a comforting thought. Man, this island sucked.

He crossed his arms and returned to his pseudo-relaxing position, but something didn't feel quite right. There was someone nearby, someone who definitely knew that he was there. Hell, he had seen her himself. He wasn't going to give her the chance to get one over on him, no way. He got up and walked to the other side of the tree so he could keep an eye out and make sure that she didn't try anything funny.

She was still there as expected, but there was also someone else in the area And this particular someone just so happened to be someone that Adonis was not happy to see.

Kyran Dean.

Yeah, that guy.

Oh, you can't be serious...

Yep, there he was, just standing there as Adonis stared him directly in the back of the head. There was some other girl there too, but since he'd never had a fight with her in the cafeteria, she didn't stick out in his mind as much.

It was hard to believe, but this day had somehow just gotten even worse.

Tina started to feel her joints ache.

It was one of the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal along with nausea, fatigue, lowered concentration and much more. All of these things didn't help here, it didn't make her fit when the name of the game clearly said that only the fittest will win, Tina felt a bit bummed out.

She went north after leaving the mess hall for a second time. She wasn't planning on returning near it anytime soon. Perhaps she'd go there to sleep tonight but she didn't plan that far into the future. Her only goal was to kill Blaine and take his shit.

That's all. She didn't need any other motives, she wanted to take his stuff, take it all. Strip him away from all the power he had and shoot a bullet right through his skull. She didn't feel hate, anger, or even upset when she thought about Blaine Eno, she only felt determination.

It was a challenge for her. A new goal to achieve, her only goal that ever mattered. Seeing Blaine Eno die was the only goal in her life that mattered now, nothing else even mattered. Blaine would die because of Tina's bullets and she would be ecstatic.

She heard screaming that attracted her. She hoped it was Blaine Eno hitting someone in the face, it would give Tina another good reason to put a couple of bullets inside of him. She wondered if she hit him when he ran away from the mess hall. If a bullet touched him, she hoped it would get infected and he'd suffer and die miserably. She caught glimspe of the people who made a lot of noise behind a tree.

The people in front of her weren't Blaine Eno.

There was a black girl named Natali, she recognized her before she was in morning class and then there were two boys. She didn't know either of them personally but vaguely remember their names: Kyran and Adonis. She couldn't recall if they were in her classes, her time in school felt like a lifetime ago. There was also another girl but she was somewhere up in the trees and Tina couldn't see her. She didn't care about her.

Tina decided not to open fire on the people in front of her. She crouched, her gun in her hands. It was fully loaded along with the magazine that sat in her hoodie. 14 bullets in total, that's all she needed hopefully.

She could get her kill here: the trio on the ground were unsuspicious about Tina. They didn't know she was there but she wanted to make sure the kill she got to go home was worth it. Killing Blaine Eno was worth it. These three? Not so much.

She played the waiting game.

The girl offered no defense, instead choosing to confirm the lie. The words tumbling from her mouth only serving to damage her point more

Whatever response she would have given was lost to time though when a third person made themselves known. He was a friend, they skated together. She could remember spending whole days down at the skate park with him on weekends and the emotions she had experienced. Feelings of freedom and joy in their purest forms, something so rare and difficult that once you have it you forgot to savor the moment so swallowed up by the moment itself. In the end being left with nothing more than a memory of it, like a Polaroid in your mind, that captures the images so vividly while the feelings all get dulled over time.

She had liked him a lot back then.

A newly-acquired crescent shaped cut adorned his face, a trophy from a previous battle he had surely fought not long into the game and therefor not long ago as it was still daylight. Regardless it wasn't her place to judge the actions of others, there would be people who did things they would be judged for. Fairly or not they would all be judged by people who had no understanding of the situation themselves. It was the way of the modern world and one of the joys of the inter-connectivity they had all fostered. You could have the opinion of someone you would never meet beamed straight onto the screen of your preference purely so you could disagree with it; in turn engendering an opinion on everything in everyone regardless of knowledge or experience.

Someone else always knew best.

He had asked her a question though and due to their preexisting relationship she felt required to give an answer of some kind.

"Sitting. Breathing."

The bull had moved, she could see him staring at them from around the side of a tree. He was taking a noticeable interest in her friend more than herself or the girl.

There may have been something else, a shadow moving in the trees. One of the many different forms death could have taken as he went about collecting all of the souls that were currently scattered and adrift on the island. She couldn't be sure though, the trees themselves seemed to be swaying in a mocking fashion to prevent her from being able to see. She turned her attention back to the bull. Death would be sure to get his toll no matter what.

Nodding in the bull's direction she addressed her friend again.

"Someone is watching you."

Natali raised her eyebrow at Kris, who seemed to entirely ignore her response. At least it was better than her getting pumped full of lead or something, which was a possibility she was more sure of every passing second of awkward silence or shouting in the woods. She blinked at Kris once, twice, and then turned away, trying not to feel as if the other girl's eyes were boring into her skull. It wasn't a very pleasant feeling - in fact, it was like she was trying to get at her deepest, darkest secrets, the gun in her bag, everything, really, like another couple of cameras exclusively trained on her. She wanted her to stop. She wanted for all of it to stop.

The gun was still in the bag, the zipper just so close, but she decided against it, at least for now. She wasn't crazy. She wasn't murderer. Instead, she continued to hold the bag closer to her body, as if someone was going to just snatch it away from her.

Just when she was about to bring up this point with Kris, another guy emerged from the forest. Natali looked at him in surprise, trying to recall who he was. Wait, wait, wait, she knew this, was he a Kyle? No, but it also started with a K...Kyran! Oh, yeah, Kyran was pretty cool. Into animals, pretty chill guy, skater? Now though, it seemed as if he had a pretty nasty cut on his face. She didn't know much about medicine, but she was pretty sure that cut did not look good. Not at all. Was he fighting someone? Was he attacking someone? Was he going to attack them? The gun was so close, but she instead swallowed her doubt and waved at Kyran, trying to sound friendly.

"Oh, hi Kyran! Hope you're doing okay?"

After that, her words trailed off, unsure of what to say, as she noticed that Kyran's attention was more firmly fixed on Kris. Of course, though, because who wouldn't be fascinated with a girl sitting on a tree making vaguely unsettling comments? At least everyone seemed peaceful for the most part right now, even that jerk Alba, who was - now staring right at the back of Kyran's head. Okay, that was kind of creepy. But no death threats yet, so she thought everything was going pretty well, all things considered. At least Blaine wasn't here. She gulped. That wouldn't be pleasant.

Once more, the woods felt like they were trapping her, the trees all around her, threatening to trap her forever. No, that couldn't happen. She was going to live. She needed to.

Of course, it was at that moment Kris pointed out the fact that Alba was staring right at Kyran. She guessed it was a pretty important observation to make, but Natali was sure he could have deduced that on his own. He seemed like he had a good head on his shoulders, but there was no harm in telling him, right? Looking at Kyran and awkwardly pointing behind him to Alba, she grimaced. "Yeah, Kris is right. You might want to look behind you, just saying." This did nothing to soothe her worries, worries that one of them was going to turn on her. Just take her by surprise, kill her.

As she pondered this, she thought she heard birds chirping overhead. She paid it no mind.
