Hoping to Catch a Break

Midday Day 3, PM for entry

In a remote section in the northwest portion of the island are several grassy hills, overlooking much of the area around them. A trail leading up a slope of one of the smaller hills leads to an isolated hillside cabin in the middle of nowhere. The area around the home is surrounded by a small wooden fence. The property contains the wooden cabin itself and a smaller outhouse. Many overgrown bushes and large trees also surround the area around the hills. The cabin appears older than most of the mining-related buildings, but is actually in somewhat better shape, having been refurbished into a foreman's dwelling and then stripped less carefully as the mining company departed.

((Yumi Nunes continued from The Gun Goes Click))

Walking with the gun in her hand still felt strange to Yumi.  She wasn't used to the weight or the shape, and it left her with one less free hand for anything else that she may need to do.  It felt incredibly inconvenient, and that was even without the reminder of how it could grievously harm someone with just a few small movements on her part.

Yet despite that, she still couldn't bring herself to put it away or leave it somewhere.  It was starting to play a role similar to the one that her bag did.  It was a source of comfort on an increasingly inhospitable island.  The bag offered survival, while the gun offered safety, and she wasn't willing to let go of either.

After spending the first part of the day wandering and trying to stay out of trouble, she had come to idle in front of the cabin.  It had been a danger zone the previous day, so she wondered if anyone else had made their way back to it since it had been cleared.  If it was still open, then it might make a good place to hide for a while.  She hadn't had any real shelter since the chapel, so it would be much appreciated to have a roof over her head once more.

She looked around, bringing her second hand to grasp the grip of the gun just in case she needed it, although her fingers were kept well away from the trigger.  Even though the safety was on, the concept of a premature firing frightened her enough to avoid taking any chances.

((Ramona Shirley continued from Now This Looks Like A Job For Me, So Everybody… Just Follow Me))

So, okay, maybe they just had to remain positive about this whole thing. Ramona was all for positivity, and that was probably something they were desperately in need of as they kept on blundering through the tunnels, trying to find an exit out of that underground maze. Each step held the hope that it would be the one to lead them out of the dark, but up until about 10 minutes  or so, that'd been a dead end.

Sleeping in the tunnels had definitely been rough, Ramona idly thought, looking at the tears on her jeans. But, the announcements definitely were not all good. Deaths, more death, and again, each name called out by that ass felt like another failure weighing down her heart. One more person she could have talked down, one more person she could have saved. Instead of trying to do all that, she had settled for getting lost with a bunch of people she didn't even really know all that well.

But, there was one specific name that called out to her, grabbing at her as if it was trying to drag her down. Jay. Jay Harland, asshole supreme. Jay Harland, who fucking stuck a cleaver in Lyndi's head like a goddamn coward, was dead. Killed by that girl who was with him, Saachi. She tried to take a deep breath, but the fire in her head, in her hands, felt like it was burning up to an inferno, and it would not stop, it could not stop, and as she breathed and breathed and breathed -

Ramona had kept walking. Shirleys did not do this. Shirleys kept calm, wasn't that what she told herself the first day here? Rather than getting pissed, she should have offered a prayer for all those who died and killed, all trying to survive the game. It would've been easy to pretend she was above all that, she was just a bleeding heart, but no she couldn't.

Because for all of her infinite kindness, the times she spent offering compliments to people who had once put her down, all that charity work, Ramona Shirley, with all her heart, believed that Jay Harland deserved what he got.

But, there was still work to do, and she couldn't spend time dwelling on her thoughts. Instead, she continued to lead the group towards the slivers of light that they saw, a step towards potential shelter, something to keep her mind off of the fire raging within. It was calmed for now, at least.

Those slivers of light gradually became wider, and Ramona welcomed them, as though they were godsends, freeing them from an eternity in the dark. More simply, she was incredibly happy that they had found a way out, but in that moment, it felt like there was something more.

A few more steps towards the exit of the tunnel, and she was completely home free, but that wasn't what surprised her. What surprised her was the old wooden cabin just a few meters away, and the figure that stood right in front of it. Black hair, tan skin, as well as to be honest, a sort-of twiggy figure.

"Yumi? Girl, is that you?" She said, unable to keep her smile from seeping into her words. Finally, some good news on this island. Starting towards her, Ramona was careful not to move too quickly, but she was still elated nonetheless.

Because holy shit, she needed some good news.

((Felicia LaChapelle continued from Now This Looks Like a Job For Me… Now Everybody, Just Follow Me))

Lyndi’s killer was dead. She had no idea what to make of that.

At first, she was relieved. It meant there was some kind of justice in the world. It also meant that there was one less threat, one less person to worry about. She felt a bit at ease, knowing all that. And yet, the more she thought of it…

It was kind of creepy, realizing that you were relieved that someone died. No matter who they were. Felicia always felt bad during the few times she wished for violence on someone else. It wasn’t ever something she would endorse.

It wasn’t like other people didn't die, too. She remembered Eris. She seemed so irritable, yet so ambitious. They’d worked together on the Student Council, too. They weren’t the closest, but she’d cared about Eris. Cared for Eris. Same went with Bridgette. All three of them spent time together, hoping to come to a good decision on what to do for school events.

What’s worse was, Wendy was the one to do it. She’d knocked Bridgette into a tar pit or something. It didn’t make any sense. It… just didn’t. She knew Bridgette, she knew Wendy.

And that's what she could process from the announcement right now.

So, as they trudged out of the tunnels, Felicia’s pace had slightly slowed. The look on her face had changed into a quiet frown, occasionally with a distracted look in her eye. She kept pulling out the GPS, zooming in and out, then putting it back. It’d been only them for a while now. But eventually, a new number had come up:

G015.

It seemed familiar. Felicia looked up, and smiled.

Yumi was safe. She was alright, just standing outside the cabin.

She stepped forward.

“Hey!”

At least something was going a bit better.

Still no sign of anyone around.  Maybe Yumi really was the first person to show up to the cabin.  If that was the case, then she could probably head inside and hide out for a while.  She could be protected from the elements and perhaps find a nice place to sit or lie down.  Heaven knows she could use that.  Hiding out really did sound like an enticing idea, and this cabin seemed like an ideal spot to do just that.

But there was a thought in the back of her mind that kept her from moving for the door.  What if someone was inside?  There was definitely the chance that someone could have shown up before her and set up shop in the cabin earlier that morning.  Worse, it could be one of the killers like Saachi or Jasmine, or maybe someone that hasn't been on the announcements at all yet.  They could be lying in wait, anticipating the moment when someone like her opened the door, providing them an opening to strike...

Yumi's grip on her gun tightened.

Her deadlocked stare at the cabin door broke when she heard a couple of voices behind her, calling her name.  Someone else was there, and they knew who she was.  She quickly shuffled around to face her callers, ready to raise her weapon if need be.  But once she saw who was calling to her, the firearm remained pointed at the ground.  In fact, she took one hand off of it completely, letting it rest in the grip of her right hand, lazily drifting at her side.

Felicia and Ramona had found her.  She had left them behind at the chapel, but a full day later, they had found her again.  The fears that had been gripping her mind moments ago dissipated, and she felt her throat becoming choked with emotion.

"F-Felicia?  Ramona?"

Ignoring everything about caution and safety that she had been repeating to herself, she ran to her friends without hesitation, and wrapped Felicia in a hug as soon as she was in range.  It wasn't the greatest hug in the world, since the weight of Yumi's swinging bag threw her off balance and the gun that was still in hand wound up smacking against Felicia's back.  It was okay, though.  The safety was on, and her friends were safe.

As she made a sound that was either laughing or happy crying, Yumi smiled.  And this time, it was completely genuine.

"Oh my god!"

Oh thank whoever was up there, it was Yumi. She could almost feel the relief palpable in the air, even if she was already like 90 percent sure that they had found who they were looking for. Getting out of that cave truly did turn out to be a good thing, and she could have sang in happiness, until she came back to the fact that they were on this island designed to make them kill each other.

She shook that thought out of her mind however, and instead walked towards Yumi, taking a step back to avoid getting in the way of the surprise hug. Felicia and Yumi had been friends, right? So, she just had to stay calm, stay on the watch out.

It was great to find people, actually, it was amazing, but that didn't mean they could just let their guard down. Not after what happened to Lyndi. It could still be a joyous occasion, after all. Just one with a lot more observation than the usual.

Ramona probably would've stood there for a bit, make sure everything was careful, when she saw the gun - Yumi's gun, impact against Felicia's back. Had to be careful, even if Yumi was a friend. She wouldn't do something like that, right? Looking at Yumi glomp Felicia, she started to feel guilty for even thinking thoughts like that. In all honesty, she'd seemed incredibly relieved to find them, and now she was happy-crying into Felicia's shoulder or something. Not exactly the look of a killer.

Wait, should she join in on the hug too? Mmm, maybe not, actually. Would've been pretty awkward, probably, and she wasn't exactly close to Felicia and Yumi, other than the whole burying of the body of a shared friend thing. Wait, did that make them fairly close? It may have, yeah, but she supposed her time to join in the hug had already passed. There were somewhat more important things to look at, like the musty-ass cabin right in front of them.

"So, hey. It's great that we've like all found each other," she said, keeping her voice calm and steady. "but I'm gonna go check on that cabin thingy right there. That okay?"

It was a bit reckless, but if anyone was gonna and go get hurt, it should be her. She was the one with the fucking furby, while Felicia had the GPS thingy, Yumi had the gun, and as for Zubin and Maxwell...she wasn't sure what they had gotten. Wasn't even really where they were at that moment.

Taking a few breaths to try to calm herself, she walked towards the cabin, purpose in every step she took. On closer look, the house did seem a bit dank. There were bullets all over the place for one, and she almost visibly recoiled at the sight of them.

Maybe she should just take a few minutes to calm herself.

The cabin'd still be there.

It had been a while since Maxwell had last been here.

((Maxwell Lombardi, continued from Now This Looks Like A Job For Me, So Everybody… Just Follow Me))

He had trailed behind the group as they had gone through the woods. He wasn’t entirely sure why. He supposed that it was for the best of the group he stayed behind - so that the one who could only barely fight wasn’t in the way of a frontal attack - but every time he viewed that reason in his head he became less and less sure of it. He knew that the reason itself was clear in his head, but his thoughts as to why he chose that reason were more muddied. Was he staying behind because that would benefit the group or was he staying behind because it would benefit himself? Was he trying to be pragmatic for them or for him?

Even after a day, Maxwell still wasn’t entirely sure.

And even after Maxwell had decided he was going to beat this game, he still couldn’t help but think in ways that would help him win it.

Still, at least there were a few things he could take solace in. The fact that he was out of those tunnels - the fact that he could finally see sunlight again - was one. The fact that Jay Harland - someone who had only been a confounding annoyance at school to Maxwell - was dead was another, and even though Maxwell knew that he shouldn’t be hoping that others would die, he couldn’t help but take a little bit of happiness that the person who had killed Lyndi would not be the one crowned the fittest at the end of this competition. He couldn’t help but appreciate the fact that there was one less person who had killed on this island.

One thing he couldn’t take solace in, however, was the fact that Paris had died; a day after Maxwell had chased Jasmine down into the tunnels. What had happened between then and the next day? How had Paris managed to live so long?

If Maxwell had stayed, could he have done something to save him?

He didn’t know.

There wasn’t any point in thinking about it.

All he had to do was focus on the here-and-now. The group in front of him. If he was able to keep them safe, if he was able to make sure this game didn’t get to them, then that would be enough.

At least, he hoped that it would be. He stopped walking as the two of them began to reunite with a girl Maxwell didn’t know the name of. His eyes glazed. Turned away from the scene. Focused on the cabin where he and Daniel and Yasmin and Baxter had decided to try and hunker down at when this day had begun.

Would they - would he still be in there?

He knew the answer, but he supposed the possibility still existed.

((Zubin Wadia continued from Now This Looks Like A Job For Me, So Everybody… Just Follow Me))

Michael Maxwell was dead. Part of Zubin just wanted to say I told you so. Bridgette was dead - so that meant revenge killing was off the table. Jasmine King killed two people. So, stay the hell away from her, or greet her with a shotgun blast. Same deal with Katarina.

Whatever happened to just avoiding people because you didn't want to talk?

Anyway, the four of were approaching a cabin, and Felicia and Ramona were drawn to another girl. At least it was a good reunion as opposed to a pointy-pointy-bang-bang one. So, everything was fine for the moment.

"If it's needed, Zubin and I can check out the cabin while you three have your... reunion. I've been here before. If there's any trouble, I can navigate us out of there."

Maxwell (Lombardi) was suggesting a split - Felicia and Ramona talked to the third girl, while Zubin and Maxwell checked out the cabin.

"Uh, yeah. That sounds good. And if someone else is in there we can hopefully add to this alliance of sorts."

To be fair, Zubin had been thinking - he had a couple ideas to cheat the game. Neither of them had a very high chance of success, but they were better than nothing. Well, the first one, anyways. The other one would likely get him killed faster without a disclaimer, and possibly even with one. Maxwell could at least be a sounding board for whether to mention the second to the girls.

Felicia flinched for a moment as Yumi wrapped her arms around, but she relaxed. Just nerves. But she was okay, and that was a start to things possibly, maybe, getting better. Maybe she was just being hopeful, but she needed that hope.

Felicia returned the hug.

“I’m glad you’re okay. I was worried.”

She was. She had to, after what happened to Lyndi.

Once she let go, she looked to Maxwell. Oh, he’d been here before? Yeah, it made sense for them to check it out first, then. It didn’t look that big, but there could be someone in there. Would it be alright to let Maxwell go in? His arm had been rebandaged, but… oh, that’s right. Zubin would be there, too. Hopefully he’d do something if something happened.

“Um, I think that makes sense,” she said in thought. “I don’t think you guys will get lost or anything…”

A joke. Maybe inappropriate?

“... but if something happens, yell. We’ll help out as best as we can.”

For a moment, Lyndi flickered back into her memory.

The church group was back together, and Yumi couldn't have been happier.  After a full day spent with nothing but loneliness, fear, and sadness, she couldn't think of a better thing to greet her.  She knew, without a doubt, that she could trust Felicia and Ramona, and she was sure that they felt the same way about her.  Finally, something that she didn't have to be afraid of.

Yumi released her tight embrace of Felicia when Ramona revealed her plan to investigate the cabin.  With three people around instead of one, that seemed like a much better plan than it had been a couple of minutes ago.  Ramona and Felicia were both strong, and Yumi had her gun.  So even if there was someone inside, then the combined presence of the three of them would probably be enough to ward them off from attacking.  Well, unless whoever was inside didn't consider them as a threat because they were girls or something along those lines.  In which case...

Speaking of other people, two boys emerged from the woods being Felicia and Ramona, leaving Yumi a bit puzzled.  Were they friends of theirs?  Did they meet up over the course of the last day?  How much had Yumi missed while she was off on her own?  She was a bit more skeptical of these two, since even though she didn't know Maxwell or Zubin personally, she had still heard about them, for better or worse.  They weren't attacking, and they seemed friendly enough, so she supposed that they seemed all right for now. Even so, she eyed them with a bit of suspicion before turning back to Felicia.

Wait... Felicia!

That's right!  Felicia had gotten the GPS, hadn't she?  As long as  it still worked, then they could check the cabin without having to put themselves in danger.  It was wonderfully convenient!

"F-Felicia!"  Yumi said quickly, pointing to the device in the cheerleader's hand.  "Can you check and s-see if anyone's in the cabin?"

So, okay, maybe now that Maxwell and Zubin were here, talking about going in to check the cabin and whatever, while Felicia and Yumi were hugging it out, maybe it was time to go and check out the cabin. But then again, maybe it wasn't. She was nodding, mainly to herself rather than anyone else, when she noticed something Maxwell had said.

He'd been here before? Like, before he had gotten found in the tunnels. Before they had needed to patch up his nasty-ass shoulder wound.

Ramona turned her head back to the cabin, looking at the bullet-ridden walls. Then, at Maxwell's now bandaged-up injury. Wait. Had he gotten messed up or something right here? Maybe it was just the inner skeptic in her, which didn't really have the chance to come up all that often, but still: this place seemed twice as skeevy as it had beforehand. It had already seemed somewhat shady before, but this didn't help matters much.

Still, Shirleys stuck to the plan, and backtracking on her plans to look into the cabin wouldn't help her come off as in control of the situation. So, she continued to stand tall and proud, and was pleasantly surprised about Yumi asking Felicia about the whole GPS thing. Granted, she wasn't sure if it had actually helped them all that much over the past few days, but she guessed that a device with a screen and images on it was still a home comfort of sorts. Best to try to cling on to what was left, and persevere with the changes.

Wouldn't change what happened to the place right in front of her, but what else could they do? Wait to check out the cabin, get the all-clear from Felicia?

In the meanwhile, though, Ramona kind of really wanted to hear about what exactly happened to Maxwell. While she wouldn't have called herself nosy, she just found it better to know about what was going on in other peoples' lives, so she could stay informed. No harm in that, none at all. Just being friendly.

She walked up to the two boys, sneakers scratching on the ground beneath.

"So, wait, you've been here before?" Ramona asked, looking right at Maxwell. Not exactly the most graceful way to enter in, but she could make the plan up as she went along. "What..." She trailed off, pointing at the homestead. "happened?"

Hopefully it wasn't what she was imagining.

"We left. Me and- Baxter and I."

Maxwell was fairly sure he had already told this story, but he supposed that he could be wrong. The primary memories were telling them about Paris, about the lighthouse, about the psychotic run into the tunnels that had put his arm in a cast. He supposed that given that the incedent there was the defining memory that the other memories - the side stories - were pushed to the side. Forgotten. Unworthy of note within the grand scheme of this island.

But did that mean that Yasmin was forgettable?

Did that mean that her death meant nothing to him?

He supposed it was best if he pushed this subject to the side. Focus on the question being asked right now.

"We had holed up in here, the moment this game started. We figured that the four of us, Baxter, Daniel, Yasmin-"

The topic surged up to the top of the sea before the tentacles, the kraken of his mind pulled it back down to the leagues below.

"-and I could hole up. Stay here. Try to wear this game down."

(try to keep yourself alive)

"We figured though that it would be best to explore. Best to see where we could go in case we were compromised."

(best to let you go on your own)

(best to see what this island was like for yourself)

"Me and Baxter were the ones who left, and the next place we were at was the lighthouse, which…"

They knew how that story ended. No point in completing the sentence.

"I figure, given that this place is…"

Empty, apparently. He gave a smile and a nod to Felicia. He hoped that the thanks in that was evident.

"...empty, we could try again. Hunker down. Make sure that nothing in this game can get us."

(make sure nothing in this game can get you)

"Does that sound like a good plan?"

Holy, shit, so that's how Maxwell had been gotten shot. Zubin shook his head as Maxwell told of his time of the first few days.

"We had holed up in here, the moment this game started. We figured that the four of us, Baxter, Daniel, Yasmin, and I could hole up. Stay here. Try to wear this game down. We figured though that it would be best to explore. Best to see where we could go in case we were compromised. Me and Baxter were the ones who left, and the next place we were at was the lighthouse, which…"

Damn. So he had a plan. At least, the start of one.

"I figure, given that this place is… ...empty, we could try again. Hunker down. Make sure that nothing in this game can get us. Does that sound like a good plan?"

Zubin's eyes widened a little at that.

"Yeah. I've actually been thinking a little about that subject myself. I have the start of an idea on how we can get out of here."

Couldn't hurt to try, huh?

Oh, that’s right!

Felicia nearly hit herself. She had the GPS, and she had it for a reason. There was no need for anyone to possibly put themselves in danger, since she could just check.

“Yeah, that makes sense,” Felicia said, continuing to mentally wince at missing the obvious. “Sorry… I’m a little mentally worn down, so it must’ve slipped.”

That was true. Sometimes she still thought about Lyndi. She remembered seeing her face split apart. Yaz and Eris and Bridgette… gone too. She had to make sure the others were safe.

Was Michael okay, though? He’d left without warning. She remembered bits and pieces of the announcement, enough to know Lyndi’s murderer was dead and that other people she cared for were dead, but some parts she missed. Hopefully he was. Maybe they should have stopped him.

Felicia looked down at the device while the others talked. Zoomed in and out. Five blips. She let herself breathe. Okay, so they’re free. No one else is here. There, things were made simple.

But she looked up once she heard names.

She honestly didn’t care for Baxter. He was a pig of a man. But Maxwell had been with him. She wasn’t sure what to make of that. But what was more important was that he saw Yaz, before she… she…

Felicia’s nails dug into the GPS’ cover.

He’d seen her. Before something happened. He was one of the people who saw her last. Should she ask about that? Would it do anything?

“Well…” she said. “I just checked the GPS. We’re the only ones here. So, it should be safe. Just… remind me to check it more often, okay? We can plan more once we’re inside.”

Yumi nodded enthusiastically at Felicia's report.  "S-so if there's no one inside, then it ought to be s-safe foe us to stay, right?  At least f-for a little while."

With that confirmation, she felt a burst of confidence.  She walked to the front of the group, her stride a bit more upright than usual.  She placed a hand on the door and took a breath.  She knew that it was safe, but it was still a bit of a rush, opening a door to whatever mysteries may lie within.

She looked back over her shoulder.  Their group had certainly grown since Yumi had left the church, hadn't it?  She had to wonder how well they could all fit within the confines of the cabin.  Hopefully it wouldn't be too cramped once they all managed to squeeze in there, provided that it wasn't too cluttered to fit them all inside in the first place.

No use stalling any more.  There was a crowd of people waiting, and she was in position to fix that.  She took a breath and tightened her grip on the handle, opening the door slowly and letting the light gradually flood in from the doorway.  She took the first step inside and held the door open for the others.

"Um... care to come in?"

Morning came earlier for Yumi than the rest of the group.  When the sun rose, she had only recently started working a shift on guard duty, so at least she had a decent night's sleep behind her.  She sat silently against the back wall of the cabin, staring at the door and keeping a firm grip on the gun in her lap.  There had been no sign of activity since she had been awake, but it never hurt to be extra cautious.  It was better to be alert than oblivious, after all.

She was careful not to move around too much or make too much noise.  The rest of the group needed their sleep.  If they were going to come up with a good plan, then they needed to be well-rested and functioning at maximum capacity.  In a way, that was a part of her job at the moment.  Granted, an intruder would probably wake everyone up anyway, but hopefully the inherent threat of a gunwoman already present in the room with her sights trained on the door would be enough to dissuade them.

After sitting there for quite some time, she wondered how much time had passed.  She was bored, and there wasn't much on hand to alleviate that.  She curled and uncurled her fingers and kicked her legs back and forth, both of which were desperate attempts at keeping her mind from drifting off due to sheer boredom.  Yumi contemplated the idea of waking up the others.  After all, they had to be a decent way through the morning, so maybe waking them up to help shake out their residual sleepiness could help.

But of course, as soon as that idea crossed her mind, the loudspeaker screeched to life for the daily announcements.

Well, looked like people would probably be waking up momentarily anyway.

"I'd love to, Yumi," she responded with a smile, tightly gripping her bag and stepping into the cabin, feeling largely at ease for the first time...in a few hours, at least. A temporary sanctuary was what she needed, was what they needed, and they had found it. That was something to be hopeful about.

Still, voices nagged at her in her head. Shirleys didn't get complacent. Shirleys did not think that just because the threat was not present at that moment, that the threat was not present at all. There was still so much she had failed to do, people she had failed to help, but that didn't mean everything was for naught. Just had to push herself harder, work smarter than ever before.

The cabin itself was a bit messed up, which meant the people who had left it, the people who were with Maxwell, went off in a hurry. The bullet holes were still present in the walls, and a sudden chill ran down Ramona's spine. They had been attacked in this place, right? Yet, Maxwell was suggesting that they should just go in and hide here. Considering everything else, she figured he should've been much more reluctant staying in this place, but she could deal with it.

What she couldn't deal with, though, was the fact that the only thing she could defend herself with was the Furby still stuck inside her bag. Why hadn't she just thrown it away? She didn't really know, actually, but she could rest for a bit now.

No better time to think about that, than at home. Well, not her home, but a home. A house, really. A house.

It was the middle of the night, and Ramona was on guard duty, guarding with, well, pretty much her fists and the belief that luck would be on her side. Not that it really had for the past few days, but a girl could hope, couldn't she? She could at least hope that more people could come here, join in on the escape plan, whatever it was, and actually make a change for the better.

That change probably would've been a lot harder to make come about without some means of self-defence, but just breaking up the chairs to use as some kind of stabbing thing didn't exactly seem smart. For one, she didn't want to risk waking the others up, and she also didn't want to somehow give herself splinters based on a particularly hare-brained attempt.

Maybe turning on her flashlight would've been a good idea, but that would've necessitated actually groping around for her bag in the darkness, which seemed like the opposite of a good idea. It didn't seem as if anyone was going to come up to the cabin, anyways.

If they did, though, she was ready. This time, there would be no mercy. Not after Lyndi, not after she failed to avenge one of her friends. Another failure like that was not something she could have dealt with, and so she waited with balled-up fists.

She waited, for as long as she could, until the next person's shift came around.

It took her quite a while to go back to sleep.

Somewhat surprisingly, Ramona hadn't dreamt of anything during her sleep, but that only served to disorientate her even more as the announcements came on, shaking her out of her sleep-addled state, almost causing her to bang her head on the wall next to her. Thankfully, she had enough presence of mind to avoid doing so, but that just meant she continued to sit against the wall, as she soberly listened to the announcements.

The cycle was still continuing, a sobering rhythm against the exciting experiences of yesterday. All she could do was listen and listen, and reflect on how much more she could have done, but didn't.

Had anything really changed?
