Rehearsal Workshop Of Horrors

[Chris Tyrell Continued From Heads Will Roll]

The laughing of Audrey ll echoed through the stage, the actual amazing realistic remains of Orin was still slightly visible from the puppet's mouth. Chris didn't bother to clap for the fifty something times. Especially when the director was going to repeat the end of Act 1, again. Perfectionist.

Damn it, what was the puppeteer doing? You would think that after enough time, enough time to get the orchestra over and do a full dress rehearsal, that they would be nearly flawless.

Actually. they were. Chris was just nitpicking because there wasn't enough 'him' in it, he knew that was the truth, but he was so emotionally sedated in the dim auditorium that he pushed it away easily.

He was such a whiner, jeez. Rehearsals today were super long, and they weren't allowed to talk during countless run-throughs. And transitions were basically the last hour or two. And they STILL weren't allowed to talk when stops occurred and the director had to run in. Needless to say, Chris was peeved.

Most of the cast played games or messaged on social media or whatever, but Chris wasn't that type of person. Despite his VERY strong desire to sock some of his disrespectful cast-mates, and to rip up his homework and just talk to someone, Chris didn't. When his homework was done, he just quietly reread Agnes Grey, as the monstrous sounds of Audrey ll rang out, as voices filled the stage with some rocking tracks. Chris tuned in, obviously. If he was going to be an active cast member, of course he'll listen to other scenes. Or at least more then some other people...

_________
The lights came up. Chris put his book away, and straightened up his costume. Thank goodness, now it was break time. He could get some food, maybe call a friend. Or better, rehearse. Chris didn't have much stage time as he liked, but he wasn't villainous enough for Seymour or Orin, heavens no, and his voice was stupidly tenor, so the chance of him getting the role of Audrey II got thrown into a man-eating plant. That just meant he had to compensate. He couldn't be a weak link, ever.

As the cast filed out, Chris got up as well. It was a short break, fifteen-twenty minutes maybe, it was logical to keep close to the auditorium. No getting McDonalds today. Besides, he was in costume, that would just be plain awkward. What was he, some nerdy cosplayer? Maybe he could get a friend to fetch him food....nah. Wasn't hungry. Beside, He KNEW he was one-track minded when it came to theatre. No nonsense, no screwing up lines.

He was going to show how acting SHOULD be done. Chris was not sitting in a group, and he was simply just outside the auditorium. Chris took out his script. His lines were highlighted in every possible colour, and annotated. Other people's lines too. He'll note how actors are screwing up next time he talks to them. It's just criticism, after all, no need to get angry. Chris looked around, making sure everyone who would listen in, WAS in the range to listen to him.

Chris began to uh...not-so-quietly rehearse his scenes. Not so much belting, but just enough that Chris was practicing his phrasing, audacity and tone properly. God he was so croaky and tired today. He knew he needed practice. Despite being one of the best actors here.

This setting was so alien.

((Marion Rosales: Sandbox Start))

Not quite in the way that Marion had never been inside this location before — the opposite, in truth. Marion had been here so many times but yet never under this specific context. She was sat on a chair set up on the stage every Wednesday morning before school for the purposes of practising with the rest of the string ensemble, she was sometimes on the floor or otherwise staring at the stage for the purposes of watching a concert or listening to a year meeting, and sometimes she was the one tasked to set the stage up so that one of her friends could perform a performance themselves, but until now, she had never been stuffed into the corner where the drumset normally was, made to play her violin and turn the pages of her music book all while making sure to not elbow any of the many people scrunched in around her.

It wasn’t a particularly pleasant setting. She was admittedly rather relieved that she wouldn’t have the choice to do this again in two years time.

But even then, Marion could not help but consider the upsides of this situation. It was fascinating to see the play be put together before her eyes, and it was… quite a testament to its quality that she’d heard jokes from it many many times and had yet to grow weary of them. The shared… discomfort was perhaps the most applicable word, was a factor that could allow Marion to bond further with those she got to share this unique opportunity with. The fact that this was all so unique meant that Marion found herself constantly placed into new social equations, ones where the solution was not quite something worked into her by repetition. The idea of messing up or creating a gaffe was much higher than before and that felt notably more appealing to Marion than it would for anyone else.

For example: break time. The moment it was declared, everyone but Marion seemed to have an idea of what they intended to do with it. They either got their phones out, finagled past her to try and sneak through the legion of music stands, or all of the above. The easy solution was to do what the girl next to her was doing and get a book out of her bag, but she imagined that there were still better things to do with these twenty minutes. Get up. Get out. Explore the place that had changed so radically now that it was being utilized for a reason different from routine.

So she did that. Found herself exploring then found herself outside, staring at a friend of hers who did not seem to know what was behind him.

Well. At least having friends here would make adaptation easy. She walked forward. Took a little bit of joy in towering over him as he sat. That usually never happened.

“So. How’s the star of the show going?”

There were usually thoughts that rushed through her head whenever she was talking to someone that allowed her to react in an appropriate way to whatever response her partner gave her. They did not seem present here.

Ashanti ran a hand through her braids, styled into something that resembled what everyone thought Ronette should look like, but with a head full of box braids instead of clean, straight and bouffanted. There was a lot of trust being placed in her position right now, that it was absolutely necessary she keep the braids in, because they were so important to her and her identity.

Of course, she was abusing that trust, but for a good cause - that cause was 'looking damn fine on opening night when she took them out'.

((Ashanti Baker))

For the first time in a while, Ashanti hadn't many responsibilities in her personal life. Shakira was getting lifts from one of her friend's siblings to and from school, she was up to date on everything everyone was doing that she had reason to know and care about, she was as up to date with her schoolwork as she'd ever need to be, and most relievingly of all, Louisa Lynn was still in rehab. Not that she would wish Queen Louisa anything but the best she deserved in life, but it meant she only had to retweet or recycle stuff for the update account. There was only so many times she could post 'omg louisa put another rehab garden pic on her ig story 😻 queen of nature' before people went to other, less dedicated platforms, for everything to do with Louisa Lynn.

The reason she had such free time on her hands is that preparing for this play had been such a zenith, as were all performances. People wanted to kid themselves that they were there for Seymour and Audrey, maybe even Audrey II, but Ashanti knew that it was all about the chorus. Without it, this was just a boring ol' space movie about a killer monster, so it was up to Ashanti as Ronette (and presumably also other actors as Crystal and Chiffron, if such people existed making rehearsal harder) to make it different, make it unique, make it truly...pop.

Which is why all eyes were going to be on her when she rocked up to opening night, braids gone, hair out, new girl in town ready to steal the show like she'd just shown up. To be honest, parting with them was going to be tough. She'd had them for years now, and they were as much a part of her as anything else she'd done in the past eighteen years. But she'd made a mental committment to showing them all up, and sacrifices had to be made. You didn't become one of the queen bees of this place by being ordinary and true to yourself - you did it by standing out. You blended into the crowd by being everything Ashanti wasn't, and that was a life lesson some of these people were going to have to learn by the time they left.

It was break time now. Ashanti sauntered over to her bag, pulled out her phone, and whisked outside to not speak to people she didn't have to.

*

"Hey guys, guess who's just-...fuck."

Ashanti was making a ten-second video for her Instagram Story before noticing that one of her braids had been snagged on the brick wall behind her, pulled out of place. This was bad on both a dress rehearsel level and an image level, because she was not someone who went on her social media looking like a mess, and she'd also spent a while getting them into place on the level of what was expected of her.

So she detatched it from the clip of the wall, put it back into temporary place, and started the video again.

"Hey guys, guess who's halfway through dress rehearsal! Make sure you're seeing-coming-...fuck."

Ashanti was not someone who normally flubbed her lines, as indicated by the dress rehearsal they were currently partways through and the fact she had a starring role in it. It happened, though. The only thing you could really do in one circumstance was to keep going, pretend nothing went wrong.

That was for theatre, though - cameras had infinite film for a reason.

"Hey guys, guess who's halfway through dress rehearsal! Make sure you're all coming to opening night, or you'll miss out on me-"

She swung the angle of her phone - the intention was to make it so it went from her upper body to her whole body, showing off her costume and just how good they both were. However, the reality was that her body sometimes didn't remember that it lived in Florida thanks to auditoriums having air conditioning, so her hand was already beginning to sweat as she went into take number three. Instead of snapping to a stable shot, the phone instead flung to the ground, skidding and bopping along until it stopped in front of two of her theatre compatriots, the radio announcer and Marion, aka one of her best friends. A crunch happened at some point, but Ashanti was currently trying to process the sequence of events and too busy to figure out when.

"MOTHER-...fucker."

For the sake of her standing amongst the teachers who were most likely nearby, Ashanti remembered to say the quiet part quiet.

So, this was actually going a lot better than he expected.

[Ra Jin “RJ” Blackburn: Sandbox START]

Part of RJ was really afraid this was going to be a mess, at least for production quality. Everyone in the cast was perfect, and he doubted it could’ve been filled better. Heck, even he thought it was good that he was playing the Seymour, despite his preference of staying out of the spotlight. Everyone in the band did amazing as well, and same for the people handling lighting and other behind the scenes stuff.

All that left was the effects, what he worried most about, and while they weren’t exactly top-quality fake blood and guts, they were still pretty good. He thought he saw a stage hand look a little queasy at the sight of Orin’s remains, but he was too busy looking at Audrey II to really tell. Audrey II as well looked really good. RJ wasn’t sure what he was expecting for it, but he definitely was satisfied with the final product. RJ had half a mind to make joke about it actually trying to eat him, but he figured that might be in bad taste and ruled against it.

And with those details down, RJ wasn’t feeling nearly as worried as he did before. The performance was going to go great, and he couldn’t wait until he could sing his heart out on that stage.

But, RJ had to wait. He couldn’t exactly time travel to performance night, so he had no other choice. So, when it was finally break time he decided to at least try to pass time smartly. He hadn’t been able to work on his homework too much, being on the stage for a lot of the rehearsal time, so he grabbed the math assignment and the text book and got to work, sitting on the stage to save time for when they were eventually called back to act. Math was easier to deal with when he had singing on the brain. If he started writing lyrics, he’d notice it quicker than if it was English or history.

It was as he was trying to find the area of a pentagon that he heard the typical crack of a cellphone hitting the not-so-friendly floor. RJ looked up and cringed at the sight of the phone making it’s way across the floor. It almost felt like a comedy skit, when it stopped in front Chris and Marion.

“MOTHER-...”

Especially with the almost curse from the person RJ could only assume was the owner of the phone. While tempting to laugh, RJ’s empathy won against sense of humor, and he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy for the girl-she looked like Ashanti, but he couldn’t tell for sure with her being so far away.

He got off of the stage and started walking over to where the phone was on the floor.

“You think there’s any chance it still works?”

RJ kind of doubted it, but hey, sometimes phones can be sturdy. Maybe this one just got a spiderweb crack on it?

You are the radio announcer, just channel that energy, smiles up. You own this show, just look at the man in front of you, isn't he a great way to promote the program? You might pick up an Audrey ll in the process, oh, just think of the joy they'll bring you!

How the hell did people method act. It was impossible to truly channel those emotions, surely! Sure, you can feel around with being a high school student, but how are you meant to get into character, and really become a jerk like Orin or Seymour near the end? Just take a deep breath, Chris. He was completely fine in his own way, RJ and Dale were good at their own thing. He was good at this. He just wasn't cut out for Seymour, that's it.

And now his performance of like, three lines was failing him. This wasn't going to work, he just needed to get a drink, that'll put him back in the mood of the joyfully oblivious radio announcer. Or Marion, that worked better then a bottle of water. Marion was awesome, man.

"Oh h-Ey! Star of the show, oh, you are flattering me Marion. RJ's somewhere here if you want to get an autograph early though." Well, he {i}really{/i} needed a drink. If he voice cracked like a girl like what he just did on stage he would never hear the end of it. "I'm just a dude who appears once though, no star here, sorry! What's poppin' anyways, asides from the music, Marion? Great job on that by the way."

Star of the show. He loved hearing that, but he wasn't about to pretend he was someone he wasn't, and

Uh. THAT was not a sound he loved hearing. Chris had only his phone and he'll rather the something two hundred dollars it took to fix that, go to his lunch. He was always very careful with it, and that? That made him look at his bag just in case. Whose phone was that, Chris looked down and...ah. Ashanti's. Uh, this was awkward. Chris pointed at the phone like it was some body that just fell twenty storeys, Marion and the newly arrived Seymour had to see this.

"RJ, use your brain, bud." He smiled at RJ, he would high five him but this did uh, did not seem like the right time. He was an optimistic guy, but he was also a smart one. Looking at the phone, he then looked at Ashanti. That was going to take a whole one hundred dollars to fix. If it even worked. Maybe the phone bashed its brains in, and the glass dusted screen was an outward display of that.

Chris gave a slow, loud clap.

He was sympathetic, but come on, this was pretty funny as well. "Wow, Ashanti. How did you even do that?" He would say that Ashanti should be an Olympian Discus Thrower, but that was a bit over kill.

It was a truth universally acknowledged in Mangrove Garden that when one tried to have a conversation with their friend in peace and quiet, roughly half the school would emerge from out of sight and take what should’ve been a simple interaction and add quite a lot more cacophony to what had before been lush.

But — attempt to tie Austen to the current situation aside — Marion wasn’t too put off by the sudden caterwauling. If anything, for once, it simplified the proceedings quite a bit. What had once been completely new ground for Marion had now become markedly more familiar now that RJ and Ashanti (bless her heart) had placed themselves inside the picture. It was disappointing, for sure — Marion lived for their moments where the solution to a social equation did not occur easily to her — but at least now the chance of making a social error due to this unfamiliar setting was notably mitigated. Whatever the consequences happened to be, Marion was glad to know that she would not have to face them today.

Well, so long as her reply to Chris was up to an adequate standard. She couldn’t let the star of the show go completely unnoticed in the midst of all she had to address.

“Don’t thank me, thank our conductor. If it weren’t for her, I’m not entirely sure we would’ve been able to classify our playing as ‘music,’ aha.”

And with that out of the way, time to help out one of her very bestest friends. She bent down and picked the phone up off the ground — choosing to not see whether it was broken or not before Ashanti could, for her sake — before holding it out for its owner to take.

“Here.”

She had yet to address RJ in the context of this conversation. That was something to note. Fix, when Marion got the opportunity to, lest he felt like she wasn’t including him.

Her FUCKING phone.

Not that it was that big of a deal - Ashanti's parents alloted her one phone repair a year, and she hadn't used said allotment since she was 15. So even if it was smashed beyond repair, within a few days everything would be peachy. But Ashanti didn't like waiting for things she was used to having at a moment's notice, and the prospect of not being able to religiously check the TV sphere of twitter made her pre-emptively agitated in a way she couldn't quite vocalise.

Well, it wasn't like she was going to vocalize it in present company, anyway. Marion? Definitely. These other two? Definitely not.

She didn't so much respond to RJ as much as glare at him in a way that would kill if glaring did such a thing. She didn't have to say anything because Chris was the anger-to-normal translator for the look she just gave, even if he was being such an ass about it. In a weird way, she appreciated assholery more than stupidity, but that may have been because she was still in her feelings.

"I was trying to get a good angle and it slipped from my f-"

Ashanti once again remembered there were teachers around, and even then Jesus was watching.

"-hands."

Marion handed Ashanti her phone back-

"Thanks, Marry."

-and she finally saw the damage. She'd had good luck with accidentally dropping her phone in the past, escaping with a small scrape or even no damage at all - today was not such an occasion, because the front screen did not so much resemble a spiderweb as it did a thick glass mosaic. Ashanti reflexively moved her fingers away from the worst of it and held it openly in her palm.

"Well, at least I didn't drop it in the pool again, 'cause that's harder to get fixed."

Ouch. RJ's pretty sure that, if the whole 'looks could kill' thing was true, Ashanti would've just shot him in the face. His relaxed smile turned to one of nervousness as the ends of his mouth curved upward a bit more, and his hands went up in the universal 'don't shoot/unarmed' gesture, open palms and in front of his shoulders. Maybe he should lighten the situation a bit, but how...

"RJ, use your brain, bud."

Ah, there we go. Thank you Chris.

"Afraid I can't, bud. Audrey II needed an extra snack, and I wasn't using it much, so..." RJ shrugged, relaxing his smile again. "On the bright side, I think the canned ham is doing well enough."

Maybe not the most original or funny joke, but enough to ease the immediate tension he's feeling.

He watched the clearly broken phone switch hands from Marion to Ashanti, and his hands curled as his right shoulder raised slightly. Yeah, there's no chance that thing is still working, at least at the moment. Rest In Peace Ashanti's phone, you will be missed, at least by Ashanti.

"You still might want to call your parents and let them know what happened. Get them prepared for getting that fixed."

Hopefully Ashanti was better than him and actually remembered a phone number. Otherwise this might be even more of a problem.

Chris stopped clapping shortly after seeing Ashanti's glare, which made it look like RJ just doomed the world with an alien plant, rather then making him a dumb comment. Even he kind of felt the sting, and he was standing a good few inches away from RJ! (Plus a good, more then few, inches from Ash.) He tried to be a bit more serious, but frankly, Chris wasn't that sort of guy at all.

"Should've fed Twoey someone else, she'll be wanting more then a peanut size for a snack." Chris bantered back quietly and slyly, almost to himself. As much as people give him flak for not knowing when to drop it, he swore that he wasn't as bad as people seem to think! He knew when to end a joke! "I'd say maybe feed it Dale's brain, but I think the poor guy has been eaten enough in the musical as is." Okay, okay, he couldn't resist adding that in, JUST as a light hearted poke at the guy. Chris (totally) wasn't looking around to make sure no one or Hawthorne overheard him.

Chris tucked his own phone into his costume so it had no way of dropping out of the blazer. The whole situation was, like a reminder of the fact that he dropped his own phone while doing the exact same thing at a party last year. Except that Ash was probably trying to post some update on social media, during rehearsals, which was pretty moronic.

"I'm going to assume you've backed up everything? Otherwise, uh, RIP. Also, uh, try not to touch the screen, or your fingers can Rest In glass-Peaces." Chris wasn't helping, but come on man. What could he do? Offer cuddles? Start a random conversation in a random group?

Most he could do was to warn Ashanti on something she already knew about lightly. Even from Chris's view, he could see tiny glass particles, whiter then Audrey ll's teeth, and sharp as hell.

It took a second for Marion to be able to properly absorb everything that had been said between when she’d last contributed to this conversation and now. Ashanti thanked Marion for retrieving the former’s phone, for which Marion replied with a fairly automatic smile and a “no problem”. RJ and Chris both made a joke about what the Audrey II puppet would eat (which Marion giggled at — she didn’t particularly get it at all, but she knew that at least one of her or Ashanti would have to laugh at it for the sake of this conversation), before giving what felt like fairly useful advice regarding repairing Ashanti’s phone.

Marion wasn’t quite sure whether the advice would be needed or appreciated by Ashanti, but she figured that some form of concrete help would make her feel better regarding what had just happened. She went through the motion of bringing her own phone out of her pocket, entering the passcode (three three three three three three) and then offering it for Ashanti to take.

“Here,” Marion said, keeping the smile that she’d given Ashanti earlier. “If you want to call your parents. I’m pretty sure I have them saved on here.”

The annoying thing about theatre kids was that they always thought they were spouting off a one-liner in some cheesy-ass white-kid teen movie, and Chris and RJ were no exception.

To Ashanti, this was supposed to be her moment to be the main character of her own Freeform high school drama. Her phone was the one broken, just let her contemplate? Lament? But no, only Marion knew the jig here, and that jig was supposed to be "Let Ashanti Be Cute About Her Broken Phone". This wasn't an ensemble moment.

But this wasn't exactly the time and place to cause that kind of scene. They were all working together for a common cause and causing unneccessary tension because Ashanti wasn't liking how these two boys were talking to her wasn't the way to the best Ronette of Ashanti's capabilities.

So she smiled forced through RJ telling her to call her own damn parents, forced a single chuckle to Chris's lame pun, and dropped the forcedness to give real sincerity in said smile to her actual friend handing her an actual phone. With that, she rotated around, dead phone still flat in her hand, and sauntered out of earshot to make her phone call, hoping she still remembered dad's phone number.

"Should've fed Twoey someone else, she'll be wanting more then a peanut size for a snack. I'd say maybe feed it Dale's brain, but I think the poor guy has been eaten enough in the musical as is."

Chris, no, bad Chris.

RJ couldn't help but snort and chuckle a little bit at those comments. He tried to hide most of it, making his left hand a fist and trying to cover his grin, as well as keeping his laughter as quiet as possible, but he felt like Chris would notice it anyway.

He should probably stop this joking around before it got out of hand, though. So, with as serious of a face he could manage while still smiling and with a tone that had no real malice behind it, he said, "Shut up."

RJ didn't really have much to contribute to the conversation after that. He didn't really know phones that well, or at the very least how to deal with a broken phone. While not the best with his phone, he had yet to seriously damage it. The closest he had to compare to it was when he left his iPod in his pocket and it went through the washer and the dryer, and something told him that that is incredibly different from dropping your phone on the merciless floor.

RJ's smile drooped a bit after Ashanti smiled at him, his hands going behind his back, the right gripping the left from behind. He wasn't sure, but her smile didn't really seem all in it. Wasn't fully genuine. He wasn't sure if it was just him or if he had done something to upset her, but decided against asking after she went to make her phone call. Maybe another time.

Instead, he chose to make some conversation with Marion and Chris for the time being. He probably should have gone back to his math homework, but he could work on it later. Plus, he wanted to know what would happen with Ashanti's phone now, and he figured he wouldn't find out sitting on the stage, calculating the height of a triangle.

"So how mad do you think her parents will be?"

It was a bit more of a whisper, just in case Ashanti had better hearing than most, but it still should've been heard by Marion and Chris. The question had no real venom behind it-he was pretty sure most parents would get upset with their kid hurling their phone across the room. He was just curious what the others thought about the situation.

Unfortunately for RJ and likely everyone else in the sham of a show that was this amateur high school drama scene, Chris blatantly refused to take a hint. Like all functioning members of society, he could obviously tell the scenario didn't call for it, but Chris didn't care. Look, it was funny, okay? He gave RJ a playful 'gotcha didn't I?' kind of smirk. If RJ could be any less toothless with that 'shut up', he would need dentures. Chris made a what was essentially a kettle sound, but was supposed to be a chuckle to himself.

Aw. One little lame chuckle at his not-lame joke. Wasn't even trying to be genuine. That sucked. Chris had a good feeling that he wasn't to get more out of Ashanti, especially since she was making a phone call. He drew the line at annoying parents over the phone, that was a rule Chris made, today, just now. He reckoned he needed a few standards or quirky lines he won't cross anyways.

(No seriously, he had received more then his fair share of people crashing into a phone call. Doing it on purpose was pretty low, or something like that.)

Much like everyone else here, it was maybe sort of hard to focus on homework after some chick broke her phone. It wasn't easy for even him to go back to focusing on his script either, and him focusing on things was something he actually prided himself on. It just kind of hits hard, dude. Every teenager worth their social salt had a phone, and Chris wouldn't even be sure what would happen if his broke. Oh, um. Hm, a-actually, he would just get them fixed. No whining needed, totally!

He turned away from staring at Ashanti, back to this ragtag group that had come together from someone's misfortune. Chris took a moment to think of an add on to RJ's ice-breaker. Or would that be glass? Heh. He emotively shrugged, but played his reaction cool and chill.

"I dunno, genius. I don't really know who Ashanti's parents are, but I'd take a wild uneducated guess and guess they're mad. Maybe they'll make her pay for it or ground her."

That would be most normal parents like his own parent's reaction. He had absolutely not idea what other reactions there could be. Hell, he wouldn't be surprised if she got belted or something for it. His friends always suggested that he think in other people's shoes, but what, were they supposed to be ALRIGHT with her breaking an expensive electronics?!

"I mean, then again, maybe they'll forget being mad at her, if she does a good enough job at playing Ronnie and the perfect daughter."

“I don’t think they’ll mind. Werner and Palesa are doctors. I’m fairly sure they can afford anything she needs.”

Marion decided that the best course of action in this scenario was to give a curt yet detailed answer that gave an objective conclusion to all that the two boys wanted to know. Perhaps from a different point of view it would have allowed the conversation to blossom more had she said something more vague to add more kindling to the fire Chris and RJ were attempting to stoke, but personally Marion would’ve preferred that somebody pee their metaphorical pee and put this fire out sooner rather than later. Ashanti, despite her mistakes (bless her heart) was a friend. While Marion did appreciate getting to know all the different perspectives all the people she knew had on all the other people she knew, making jokes about her friend’s vicissitude was not something she particularly appreciated. At least from her perspective.

She looked around to try and take her surroundings in, a bit, and saw the object of their conversation fumbling around with the numbers in the phone. Marion decided to call out to her. To be helpful. Hopefully.

“Your mother’s in my contacts,” she called, making sure to raise the volume of her voice so that Ashanti would have no trouble hearing. “Go down to the P section!”

Oh. Right.

Ashanti had been fumbling back and forth between a large handful of numbers which could have ended her dad's mobile number, before Marry shouted over with a reminder that hey, Mom's was in there. They'd spent so much time at Alyssa's over the past few years, with Ashanti borrowing Marry's phone so many times to call Mom since she was lucky enough to have gotten hers first out of the three of them, that it was a wonder said number wasn't imprinted into her muscle memory.

That being said, there was a reason she wanted to call Dad and not Mom. Dad was always cool about whenever she broke something, be it her first phone or the house's intercom system - Mom, on the other hand, was considerably less cool with their property being wasted by any of her non-Shakira daughters, so that was going to have to be a half conversation on top of the already long conversation in her near future.

Blocking out the audibly grating noise of both RJ and Chris talking, she rounded the corner as she hit her mom's name in the contact list.

*
[+] A Conversation Between Mother and Daughter
"Hello Marion?"

"It's me, Mom. Just borrowing Marion's phone."

"Oh. Why are you borrowing Marion's phone?"

"There was...an accident at dress rehearsal, and my phone is completely wrecked."

"...I see."

"I backed everything up this morning, so all my contacts and everything are safe but the phone's completely ruined."

"Ashanti, when you broke your first phone, wasn't that also an accident?"

"Yes?"

"And when someone managed to yank the wiring out of the intercom system, wasn't that also an accident?"

"Yes, that was an accident too, Mom."

"I just find it really odd that everything that breaks around you is always an accident. Does this mean we shouldn't trust you around our expensive property any more?"

"But the phone was mine."

"Actually, the phone was in your father's name, we just gave it to you."

"Okay."

"I don't know, Ashanti, I think you'll have to wait a bit longer before we get you a new one."

"Mom, you can't be serious, I need my phone for everything."

"Honey, when I was your age I didn't even have a phone, and I got along just fine, so you will too."

"Mom you don't understand, I can't keep up with everything without my-"

"I'll talk to your Dad about this tonight, but don't expect things to change."

"...okay, Mom."

"..."

"..."

"So how is dress rehearsal going?"

"Fine."

"Ashanti, I know I didn't spend several days in the hospital to give birth to Patti LaBelle, so you can cut it with this new attitude."

"Okay, Mom."

"Will you be able to drive home by yourself? Do you remember the route without Google Maps?"

"Yes, Mom."

"Alright then, we'll talk when you get home, and you've calmed down."

"Okay, Mom."

"Love you, Ashanti."

"Okay, Mom."
And before she could be admonished again, Ashanti hung up the phone, her face downturned with a general anxiety. She wasn't exactly sure whether it was a stressful day at work for Mom to ellicit that response, or if she'd vastly underestimated just how many phones and electronics she'd broken, but that conversation went even worse than she expected. Ashanti didn't know how long she would be without a phone, without easy access to Instagram and Twitter and Facebook and everything of the sort, but she knew that was a conversation for tonight. She just needed to win Dad back onto her side.

With that, she politely wiped down Marion's phone's screen with the underside of Ronette's dress, and returned to her friend and the two others.

*

Her face had returned to its default smile when she rounded the corner.

"Everything's all good, I backed everything up this morning so I'll just need to put it onto my new one when that arrives," Ashanti exclaimed, chipper as ever.

She handed Marion's phone back, and absentmindedly turned the broken phone in her hand, remaining careful not to touch the jagged glass.

"I suppose I'll find a plastic bag for this later."

With her attention now returning to her fellow castmates, Ashanti adopted the same voice she had before sweat and gravity intervened.

"So, how we all feeling about opening night?"
