Pines dot the entire valley to a greater or lesser extent. However, it's the eastern slopes of the valley that the trees grow thickest. Here, the trunks are so close together that visibility doesn't extend beyond a few metres, light has difficulty filtering through, and a carpet of needles muffles footsteps completely. Added to the steep terrain, and the stand is not a place many would feel comfortable in for long.

(F08 START)

The fallen trunk of a pine tree gave a creak as she took a seat on it. She needed a rest, or she felt she did. In all honesty she had probably kept wandering for a bit longer. However, Emily's sense of direction was poor and she had spent the last few hours wandering amongst the pine forests.

She hadn't seen anyone so far, although she thought that might be for the best. After all, other people would be armed with rifles and dynamite or whatever else they gave in this thing. All she had was an American flag, which while patriotic, wouldn't do much to protect her. She had put it back in her bag after discovering it. She hadn't been sure what to do with it. She wasn't supposed to let it touch the ground and there wasn't anywhere good to put it.

Emily rubbed the scratch on her forehead absentmindedly. A few minutes after waking up she'd managed to trip on a root and bump her head against a pine trunk. Not her most graceful moment, although far from her worst. She gave an uneasy smile at the thought of how often she had managed to trip down the stairs at home with a shout of "I'm okay!" to reassure her parents that she hadn't seriously injured herself.

She wondered how her family was doing. Her mom had probably lost it, her dad probably was trying to be the put together one, and she had no clue how Cameron would handle everything. As brother and sister they weren't super close, but they got along well enough she supposed. She tensed for a moment after hearing a sharp crack, but looking up, noticed that it was only a squirrel that had snapped a twig off up in the thick limbs of the nearest pine.

Emily liked squirrels.

Stephanie Moon continued from Inventory Check)

Steph had wandered aimlessly for a while since leaving the inhospitable gorse slopes. Her mood hadn't really improved and in fact a bad tantrum was fast developing within her head. She was angry either that Jaz was dead or that Tori had lied to her, in any case she was pissed to be in the situation in the first place. On that subject why was it that she only bumped into arseholes who she didn't like and couldn't care less about. Caleb was a boneheaded jock and a worse person to have the surname smart she could not envision. Dylan was a joke, who the hell did she think she was kidding with this tanned rubbish she came up with. It was about as convincing as Tori's disguise kit, in fact don't mention Tori...fucking bitch. The emotion raised by her friend's potential death had boiled into anger and Steph looked for something to kick. She spotted a rotten log and swung viciously at it with her left foot. Instead of it crumbling satisfying like she envisioned it turned out to be solid. She hit it with a crash and felt pain shoot through her foot.

This did not help her mood as she hopped around holding her foot, luckily her shoe had taken the worst of the damage but still it hurt. In the repositioning caused by her aimless hopping she noticed a second figure, previously hidden by the screen of trees, sitting on a log a bit further up the trail. From her previous position she had been hidden from sight but a combination of the noise she made and her new position meant she was almost certainly spotted. The key principle now was damage limitation, don't sneak up or startle them, don't look vicious but also don't look like an easy target, it could be a trap.

She stopped, waiting to see if the other figure noticed the loud noise ready to reply or run depending on their response, as she tried to formulate a good opening remark and avoid the verbal diarrhoea she had managed at the stone circle.

((Brigid Paxton continued from Wash Away))

Brigid was feeling slightly better, considering she was still inside The Program, nearly fell to her death, and ran into some ornery people on her way. Still, she ran quite a bit, something that always made her feel relaxed. Also, she had finally found someone who was decent to be around.

After running away from the stream, Brigid and Nancy took a moment to catch their breaths and talk. Their discussion was quite amicable, and soon an alliance was formed, one based on surviving as long as possible with someone friendly. It made Brigid feel glad. She didn't think she could feel happy again after winding up in The Program, but it was nice. It was like she made a new friend.

They were walking through the woods. Nancy wanted to find some other students they could ally with. Brigid agreed, knowing that she didn't want to die alone. Plus, allies meant help if they ran into any dangerous players. Seeing as Brigid was armed with cereal, it would be nice to have some allies with a decent chance of fighting off enemies.

As they were walking, Brigid noticed a figure up ahead. It looked like a girl sitting on a log. Brigid hid behind a tree.

"Hey, do you know who that is?" whispered Brigid to Nancy.

Brigid wasn't sure how to react. She wanted to be careful after everything that had happened so far today. If the girl was going to be dangerous, they needed to be able to run. If not, they needed to be sure they could trust her. Brigid sincerely hoped she would be a friend.

((Nancy Morris continued from Wash Away.))

It seemed that Brigid agreed with her plan to gather allies and form a group. Nancy thought that if they could get a bunch of trustworthy people together, they would have a stronger chance of surviving the game.

They were in the woods now. After walking a bit, her mind was now at ease. For the first time since she woke up, Nancy felt calm.

Up ahead, Brigid spotted someone, it seemed, and hid behind a tree. Nancy instinctively did the same, finding another tree to hide behind.

"Hey, do you know who that is?"

She looked over at the figure, sitting on a log.

She did! She actually knew the person over there.

"Yeah," she whispered back. "Yeah I do."

She looked back at the girl. Emily Barnes. From what she saw, Emily had no weapon, and she wasn't acting out of the ordinary. She wasn't the kind of person to just start playing like that. But still...

"Emily Barnes. She's a friend. She's... not the type of person who play, I don't think. But..."

She stopped without finishing that thought.

"Listen. I'm heading over there. I'll see what's going on with her. Stay here until it's safe. If anything happens to me..."

She trailed off. THat was a very unlikely possibility. Still...

She stepped out from behind the tree, walking towards Emily.

"Emily? Hey, Emily! It's me! Nancy!" she called out.

Emily watched the squirrel for another minute or two. Squirrels found the world a lot more interesting than people did. Squirrels could spend a bunch of time just looking at one branch and an hour on one tree, but people would dismiss a whole forest in two seconds. Not that Emily was a huge nature lover, but squirrels paid attention.

A moment later she heard a crash and she was almost confident that she saw a figure over there, but the trees were thick and she wasn't completely sure. Her thoughts on investigating were cut short by a shout in the other direction calling her name.

Her face broke into a smile at the sight of her friend, Nancy. "Afternoon," she greeted with the same pleasant grin on her face. "There might be someone over that-a-way," she said as she flopped her arm loosely in the direction of the crash.

Steph swore under her breath when she realised she had been rumbled. It is funny how history repeats itself she thought. She was getting a sense of real deja vu and was sick and tired of hiding in holes like a cornered rat. She trusted her own ability to outrun them if trouble started, it was time to go chat to some people, not live her life in perpetual fear. From her voice she recognised the other girl as Emily Barnes. She was all right, Steph remembered having conversations with her about the relative merits of various computer games. Sure some of her opinions on the subject were misguided and she seemed remarkably unable to see that Steph was right about these subjects but still she was worth a chat.

Further processing the girl's words Steph realised she wasn't the one being spoken to. That meant someone else was approaching. Slowing her advance, she cautiously peered out into the clearing trying to identify the new arrivals. Bryany...no wait Brigid that is right, she vaguely remembered seeing her around the sports field, a quiet girl that kept herself to herself. She was fine with Steph, if the girl didn't want a conversation that was cool. Better than these idiots who had nothing to say but still proceeded to say it at the top of their voices.

The third one, this game was really beginning to test Steph's limited high school trivia. Oh wait Nancy Morris, another 10 points for Steph, she must have won this competition! Another gamer, picked the wrong sport but still she was ok too, after all soccer was just an easier version of hockey with a bigger ball for malcoordinated people. Still she can't be blamed for lacking Steph's skill.

Overall, it seemed perfectly safe to reveal herself. Steph walked out of the shadows, into the clearing, making sure to keep her hands in sight and look confident. Even so she was poised and ready to run at a moments notice.

"Hey guys, no sweat I'm not violent, you want to team up or trade information? You know girl power and all that shit"

Nancy said the girl was her friend Emily Barnes. Brigid sighed in relief. At least it was a friend. She sincerely hoped that Emily wasn't up to anything foul. Nancy offered to go check Emily out first, asking Brigid to stay behind in case anything bad happened. Brigid merely nodded as Nancy stepped out.

Great, still hiding behind trees. It's bad enough we've got nothing to defend ourselves with, but what do I do if Emily attacks?

Brigid bit her lip as she saw Nancy introduce herself to Emily. Fortunately, she could see a smile on Emily's face. Brigid sighed again.

Good. She's happy to see Nancy. She can't be playing.

Brigid could hear some light discussion, then saw another girl emerge from the woods. Stephanie Moon. Brigid really didn't know her that well, but it looked like she wasn't up to anything dangerous either.

Wonderful. We found two allies just like that. This might not be so bad after all.

That's when Brigid realized that Stephanie had noticed her. Brigid realized how silly it must have looked for her to be peeking out from behind the tree. She figured that if Emily and Stephanie weren't going to hurt them, she might as well come out.

"H-hi," she said, stepping out from behind the tree.

She leaned against the tree and gave a wave.

"I'm Brigid. I'm with Nancy."

Brigid gave a small smile. She didn't want Emily and Stephanie to feel threatened by her. She just wanted everything to go smoothly.

((Dylan Walker continued from This Land Is Your Land.))

I'm alive. I'm alive. I'm alive.

Dylan was pretty damn surprised about that. Slanty had cornered her. She had the fucking ice axe. Dylan should have been dead. Or at least mutilated again. Missing a limb this time, maybe. The point is that she wasn't. She was fine.

Okay, not fine. Bitch had scraped her up something awful during that roll down the slopes, plus the missing ear and the general 'oh god my head oh god my ear it hurts oh god why ow ow ow' thing. God, she would eat her own face rather than keep going without some damn painkillers. Why, why, why didn't she figure out the med kits had painkillers before fuckin' Clara—

Nevermind that, why didn't she run away when Maxim first pointed a gun at her? Why didn't she just hit Gwen with the stupid ice axe? Why. Why. Why. Just one big 'what the fuck are you doing?'

Dylan trudged through the pine stands, still wavering a little and with no real idea of where she was going. The town had still been crowded. Couldn't people clear out for a few damn minutes so she could look around?

So Dylan wandered. She had tucked the empty water bottle into one of the pockets of the jacket. She held the loaf of bread she'd pilfered from Gwen in one hand, and would regularly take a few bites out of it. She was trying not to wolf the entire thing down, but it was hard...

In the other hand, she still had the rock that had secured her freedom.

She was battered and angry, but she was alive. She wasn't sure how, but she was. Still, she had no idea what to do next. So she wandered.

And then, eventually, she heard voices. She saw glimpses of people between the trees. She crouched. She hid. She shifted a bit so she could try and see what was happening without exposing herself as a potential target.

Two girls, just a few meters away from where Dylan was hiding. They were focused on something in the opposite direction. Another girl? One of the two girls closest... Dylan couldn't recall her name... was whispering something to the other. Dylan strained her ears to try and hear it. All she heard was 'stay here until it's safe.' Then she walked further away, towards the other girl.

Dylan's mind was ticking. She looked at the back of the girl who lingered behind. The plait. Dylan knew that plait. Brigid. Irish name. Irish girl. But that wasn't really what she was focused on, even with her tendency to pick on ethnicity. She was more focused at the bag.

Bag. Food. Water. Map. Painkillers. Maybe even a weapon. Everything that Dylan had lost and everything that she still needed.

Dylan stayed perfectly still, even as she saw another girl join the ones further away (was that the girl from the stone circle?) she just crouched, held the rock and the half-eaten loaf of bread, and stared.

She needed that bag. But this couldn't be a repeat of what happened with Gwen.

Brigid couldn't be allowed to retaliate.

Dylan's grip tightened on the rock.

Not now. Not ever.

As Brigid waved at the other girls and leaned against a tree, Dylan shoved the remainder of the bread inside her jacket and ran right at Brigid, as fast and hard as she could. Leaves crunched under her feet and she knew she was making a lot of noise, more than what could ever be explained away by the local wildlife, but it didn't matter. It wouldn't matter as long as she got this right.

With all the force that she could manage, she swung the rock at Brigid's head.

"There might be someone over that-a-way." she told Nancy.

Nancy turned her head towards the direction, and it was only a few moments before someone emerged from the direction. Unfortunately, Nancy didn't know the girl much past her name. Stephanie Moon, she recalled. She quickly asserted that she wasn't violent, though.

"Yeah, that's good."

Somewhere behind her, she heard Brigid's statement. She smiled a bit wider. There were four people here she could more or less trust.

Maybe this wouldn't be so bad, after all.

That's when she heard the crunching of leaves coming behind her. She turned just in time to see the rock come down on Brigid's head.

"NO!"

((I'm gonna skip just so we can get the death scene done. All GMing approved))

Brigid continued to smile and wave. It looked kind of silly, but she was actually feeling happy. Things were actually turning out okay. She made one friend, and now they found two more friends. Part of Brigid felt like there was a chance they could actually survive the game together. Maybe Emily and Stephanie had some good weapons they could use to defend themselves. They could probably hole up in one of the cabins and wait the game out. That sounded really nice.

That's when she heard the sound of footsteps. At first Brigid just thought it meant that someone was running into the area because they were running from someone. If they were being chased, Brigid and the girls could help them out. But when she turned, she realized what was really happening. Someone was running towards her, and they weren't in danger. They were the danger.

Brigid only had a moment to realize what was happening. She saw a girl with dark skin, blonde hair, and a bandage around her head running towards her. The girl was clutching something in her hand. Brigid's eyes widened. The girl was very close to her, swinging the object in her hand at Brigid's head.

She screamed.

She felt the hard object smash against her head. Brigid began to stumble back. She lost grip of her bag, dropping it to the ground. She continued to stumble until she fell on her back. She could feel the side of her face get warm and wet. She was bleeding. She was actually injured. This girl was trying to kill her.

Brigid tried to crawl away, keeping her back to the ground so she could see the attacker. She had to get away. That's what her mother taught her. Don't be the trouble. Get away from the trouble. Do whatever you can to avoid conflict.

Brigid tried to crawl towards the other girls, but she felt something heavy get on top of her. The girl with the rock was on Brigid, pinning her to the floor. Brigid looked directly into the girl's eyes. She was hurt. Someone had hurt this girl pretty badly, bad enough to leave a bloody nose and require a bandage wrapped around her head. This girl was in pain, and she was taking it out on Brigid.

Brigid watched the girl raise the rock above her head. Brigid tried to reach out to the girl.

"Wait!"

That was all she could say. The girl didn't listen.

((Ditto what Laurels said, just skipping order to get the death moving and GMing is approved.))

As soon as the rock connected, there was no more rational thinking. From that point on, it was just pure instinct. The sort of motions that cavemen probably did back in the day while fighting with clubs over the last piece of roasted fish.

Brigid tried to crawl away. Dylan didn't let her. Brigid tried to tell her to stop. Dylan didn't listen. Brigid wanted to live. Dylan couldn't let her.

She raised the rock and swung it down, smashing it into Brigid's head again.

And again.

And again.

Every time she slammed the rock down, she felt this savage, twisted pleasure at the fact that this girl couldn't do shit against her, and this odd rage that she never got to do this to Maxim or Clara or Gwen, and all those fleeting thoughts and feelings did was cause her to hit with more ferocity, which made her emotions run higher, which made her hit harder... and on it went in a vicious cycle.

It was all a mess of blood and heavy breathing and screaming, it could have been a few days or a few seconds or anything in between, it didn't matter. Dylan didn't know, all she knew was to bring the rock down over and over.

Underneath the rock, something gave.

Woah, so everything really does slow down when you're about to die. Who would've thought?

The next few moments of Brigid's life played out very slowly. She could still feel the pain as she watched Dylan continue to swing the rock down on her head. She could feel each blow against her temple, feeling the skin break and her skull begin to fracture. Brigid cried out. She could tell she was bleeding even more and more. She was certain she was having trouble seeing now. Dylan must have struck her eye accidentally.

Wait, it's not an accident. This is murder. I'm really dying. I'm being murdered.

Brigid simply looked up as Dylan continued her assault. Her face was getting even more wet than before. She was sure that she was crying. She couldn't check. She was in so much pain she could hardly move her arms.

So this is it? This is how I die? This is all that it was for? This was what my life was building up towards?

Brigid felt the rock connect with her forehead. The girl began to raise her arm.

Mom. She's going to be so sad. She has no one left now. First Dad, and now me. I'm sorry, Mom. I wasn't strong enough.

The girl began to swing her arm down.

Why was I born if this was how I was going to die? Why couldn't I meet my Dad? Why did I have to live in poverty? Why did I have to put up with the insults and names?

The rock slammed against her forehead. The girl prepared another swing.

This isn't fair at all. Why couldn't I be happy? Why couldn't I live a normal life?

The girl began to lower her arm again.

I guess this is it. Nancy, please be safe. Thank you for being my friend. Mom, please don't be too sad. Just look away. Don't watch your daughter die. Don't watch poor little Brigid O'Shaughnessy-Paxton as she dies.

The rock smashed against her head. Brigid let out one more cry, and then there was silence.

Dad?

Brigid smiled.

((Ashley Sydor: Continued from Luck is for Losers.))

Shit, shit, shit, and a fuck for good measure.

How many times had Ashley heard of people who got separated from their friends because they were idiots who got a little too far ahead of the group, ending up lost? How many times had thought that (heaven forbid) she ended up in the Program, she'd cling to others about as tightly as humanly possible?

But, somehow, she'd managed to lose everyone in these freakin' trees! Trees, trees, everywhere, and not a drop to... drink? Gah, she couldn't even think of an appropriate quote! Ashley would have tried calling out for them, but she would rather not announce her position to every (totally friendly, of course!) person in earshot.

She'd have to try and find them again, as difficult a task this might seem. First, Ashley just had to get out of this forest. Somehow. Finding her way to the cabin would be her best bet. On the bright side, Marley might be in this forest, or at least someone who knew where he was! Tacklehugs would definitely be in order.

Marley... where are you? Ash sighed. Knowing him, he was probably cursing out the world in general, something she'd be fairly happy to join him in, for once. Fucking Program. As hard as she tried to stay positive, stay calm, Ashley still just couldn't come to terms with the fact that, yes, people she had known for most of her life would be dying, to kill or being killed.

Such were Ashley's thoughts as she heard voices coming from ahead of her. After a moment of debating whether to come any closer, she decided to approach. Maybe these people had seen Marley?

The sound of a girl's scream reached Ashley, who froze in place for a second, then started to panic. Oh god, this was it, wasn't it? Someone was dying? N-no! No one was going to get hurt! There was still time to save her! It didn't matter who was in trouble, only the simple fact that another human being was in distress!

Ashley started to run, weaving her way in between the trees. All the jogging was beginning to pay off, at least. She reached the source of the scream.

Dylan Walker was standing over something, holding a bloody brick in her hands. Ashley tried to call out, to yell for her to stop, but she found herself unable to move, unable to scream, unable to do nothing but stare as she realized what, exactly, was lying on the ground.

Dylan Walker was standing over a corpse.

The details of the scene slowly came into focus. Three other girls were close, watching the scene in horror. Dylan's head was bloody, bandaged. The cor- the girl on the ground was wearing a black coat, and her head was... her head was-

This wasn't happening, this wasn't happening, this wasn't happening! Ashley tried to move, to run away, to get as far from this place as possible, but she could not force her eyes away. Someone was dead, someone would never talk again, laugh again, think again, would never fulfill her dreams. Confronted with this, the sheer reality, the hopelessness, Ash was powerless.

It took Emily a moment to pick up on everything. One moment her friend Nancy showed up and the next moment there was screaming and a girl getting beat on with a rock. It took another few moments for it to really process. Dylan was beating Brigid's head with a rock.

A few stumbling attempts to get up later and she was walking as fast as she could in the other direction. There was no way she could really consider that. The screaming, the rock, the look on their faces. The blood staining the rock. All of it. Emily hadn't been so blind to think no one would kill, but to have it in front of her, that was something else.

It was so brutal.

Things seemed to finally be going well for Steph, she had finally found some allies to chill with. Sure they were not ideal, but still beggars can't be choosers. Judging from the group it looked like it would be her job to do the protecting if any trouble happened. Steph started to move forward when she caught sight of another figure moving towards them at speed. She didn't even have time to cry out a warning before the girl had attacked her new ally.

Far from the knight in shining armour she had said she would be in this situation, Steph froze. She watched with morbid fascination and terror as Brigid screamed and the rock descended with a metronomic beat. Her legs were frozen in place, she was too terrified to do anything, her eyes unable to look away from the brutal reality being acted out mere yards from her position. She didn't notice as her backpack fell to the floor at her feet, her eyes rooted to the body of what seconds before had been her ally.

Brigid's cold unseeing eyes seemed to be boring a hole in Steph's skull. Behind these sightless husks was an unspoken accusation, this was Steph's fault. Steph's mouth was twisted in a silent scream her eyes unable to leave the accusing judgement of the corpse. Her legs buckled under her and she fell to the floor. In her head all of Brigid's cries were accusations that she should have saved her. Steph was unaware she was crying as she let out a scrambled sob and whispered, "I'm sorry"

She knew the words were meaningless but somehow they provided some comfort for her. She was completely unaware of her surrounding as she threw up sickened both by the scene and her own part in it.
