Out of the Darkness, into the Night

semi-private (ask before joining)

Although not particularly luxurious, the two story building which comprise the officers' quarters is hardly spartan. Along with several well-outfitted bedrooms, the quarters contain a rec room, a small gymnasium, a lounge and a miniature library.

Out of the Darkness, into the Night

((Corrina Landrey, continued from Get Ready to Fly.))

((Set just before the announcement.))

Corrina hugged her shuddering body as she walked through the darkened compound. Fatigue, hunger and her lack of stamina to begin with were finally setting in, and it had become painfully obvious to the increasingly cold Corrina that she needed somewhere to sleep. Somewhere inside, preferably, away from the cold and the dark and whatever animals were lurking around in the pockets of pitch black darkness.

The emptiness gave way to a plain stone wall, and Corrina found herself standing in front of a large building. She looked up, trying to gauge how high the building was, but was too close to even see the roof. She carefully walked up to the wall, pressing a hand against it as she walked the perimeter, tracing an invisible line until she reached an old door. She pushed it with both hands, using what little reserves of strength she had left to open it.

The door creaked as she got it open enough to step inside. Shaking, cautious steps paved her way through the building, the steady beating of her heart resonating in her head and her heavy breathing the only sounds she could hear.

She paused, looked around. Nothing around for now. Good. Corrina ducked down and dropped her bag on the floor, her hands fumbling for anything and everything in her bag that could be useful. Her fingers finally curled around a cold metal cylinder.

Please be a flashlight.

She pulled the flashlight out of her bag, turned it on and stood up. Corrina didn’t have the strength to lift up her bag right now, so she just left it out in the middle of the hallway. She was sure the decision was going to bite her in the ass, so she kicked it off to the side by a locked door. Hopefully it’d still be there in the morning.

The flashlight made things infinitely easier, cutting like a knife through the darkness and allowing her to actually see all of the crap strewn about on the floor. Corrina pushed through a double door and came to a staircase. Carefully venturing up the stone steps, Corrina came to another door. Again, she pushed and it opened, leading Corrina to wonder if they’d purposely left the doors unlocked. A shove on the nearest door she could find told her otherwise, but that just served to confuse her more.

At the end of the hallway, Corrina found another door, marked by a copper plaque too faded to make out, even with her torch. Corrina pushed the door, and, to her surprise, it opened.

She walked into the illuminated room, the last occupants obviously forgetting to turn the lights off, and looked around. It was a posh looking room, a lounge or a break room or something like that. From what she could see, the room had a table, a couple of couches, and an area over in the corner that she was too tired to realise the function of. She walked over to the couch, grabbed a throw cushion and set it up as a pillow.

She’d left any clothes she could’ve covered herself with in her bag, so that left her with pretty much one option, really. She walked up to the window, looked out of it for any signs of people, found none, climbed up on the windowsill and got to work detaching one of the curtains.

The curtain came off without much of a hassle, and Corrina walked back over to the couch.

Corrina settled into her makeshift bed and sang an old song to herself until she could sleep.

((Alex Tartaglia continued from Crayola Kids))

Alex had suffered depression before, like many kids his age. It tended to be for a variety of reasons. Sometimes a rapid combination of lots of little things, sometimes for perceived social inadequacies, sometimes for familial struggles, sometimes because the injustices suffered by others, whether he knew them or not, would send him into a spiral of depression and malcontent with the world around him.

But nothing could compare to the level of extreme shittiness he felt now. The slump he felt when he came to the conclusion he was DEFINITELY bisexual, and feared a negative reaction from his devoutly Catholic, socially conservative family? Insignificant. The sadness he felt when he and Matt suddenly, for no discernible reason, broke up? Paled in comparison. The depression he felt when he first woke up on the island, when he came to the conclusion his death was inevitable? Hell, that didn't matter anymore.

None of that could compare to the horror that many of your friends, including your best friend, were dead.

Allison Greene was gone. Dead. Kaput. For some reason, her name hadn't been read out in the announcements yet.

Or maybe it had. Alex really didn't like paying attention to the announcements. Adams, the guy talking over them, was like some school principal on crack informing a student over the school's PA system their parents had died in a freak car accident, and making puns about it.

Ever since leaving the helipad, Alex had wondered the compound, exploring every isolated nook and cranny out of want of something better to do, and also dodging any human contact, and up until now, he'd done a pretty good job of it. He hadn't spotted anyone he was particularly close to. He'd seen a few fights, overheard a few conversations, seen a few corpses.

Normally, those things would make him depressed. But it was arguable that Alex had already hit rock bottom.

He needed Alli. She was someone he could confide with, have fun with, talk to. She was his rock and he was hers.

And, the ever-glorious General, the benevolent leader of their wonderful nation, in all his glorious wisdom, decided, for no real reason, that it would be for the greater good to cause her brutal demise.

And, for the record, that was sarcastic. Understanding sarcasm in text-form can be a bitch sometimes.

Currently, he was sitting in a room in the officer's quarters. He was sitting in a chair, staring out of a window, thinking. About what, well, that hardly mattered. The subject of his thoughts shifted every second or so.

The first thing a new arrival to the room would notice was that Alex, in the short time he'd already been on the island, had let himself go, for lack of a better phrase. For someone whom regularly washed and showered and shaved and such, the short-term change was noticeable. He looked scruffy, dirty, untamed and tired. God, he was tired.

But, in between crying and wandering about aimlessly, Alex found himself with very little time to sleep or attend to his other basic needs.

So, he sat there. Whether it was for seconds, minutes or hours; well, Alex didn't know. The viewers at home did, if the US government decided footage of a kid sitting there moping was good TV material for spurring up patriotic feelings.

Eventually, he heard someone try to open the door. They failed. Because he'd locked it. Apologies for not mentioning that before. He went into the room, found a key on the side and, eager for some privacy and a temporary chance at safety, had locked it. And now, someone was trying to get in.

Shit. That was...bad? Probably? Maybe?

Fuck if he knew.

Maybe it was just him imagining things, as the person on the other side, if there was one, didn't seem to care that much, and didn't try any further.

Still, he was intrigued.

Getting up from his chair, he quickly slipped his brass knuckles on (in an enclosed environment, a strong close-combat weapon could make a big difference), went over to the door and, after a moment of brief hesitation, he unlocked the door. Silent as a mouse, he warily opened it at a slight angle, before peeking his head outside and quickly looking around.

Hmm.

No-one there.

However, one thing had changed. Alex swore that door wasn't open the first time he was in this corridor. Curiousity taking over, he tip-toed over to the doorway, pausing every second or so to check over his shoulder. No harm in a bit of paranoia, especially in a situation like this.

It was Corrina. She was trying to sleep. Singing some shitty old song he'd never heard before.

"Hey Corrina", he uttered casually, paying no attention to the possibility she didn't want to be disturbed.

Corrina awoke not on the couch, but in her own bed in her own room. She sat up, flung back the covers, grabbed her glasses from the dresser and ran downstairs, half-dressed. It was a weird thing to find her mother and Thomas in the lounge, especially when Thomas wasn’t scheduled another shore leave for six months, but Corrina didn’t question it.

"Tom?" Corrina ran forwards and flung her arms around him, burying her head into his shoulder. "I-I didn't know you'd come back."

Tom said nothing, wrapping his arms around Corrina's body. Corrina's mother, however, shot Corrina a concerned glare.

"Corrina, why are you awake?" She glanced at the old clock on the wall.

"Bad dream." Corrina retorted, pushing away from Tom. Something wasn't right here.

"Again?" Her mother shook her head disapprovingly. "It's nothing, Corrina, go back to sleep."

"She's right, Corrie. Get some sleep," Tom nodded. "We can talk later. I'll wait."

She reluctantly agreed and began a slow ascent back upstairs.

She pushed open her door, walked past the posters- sticking the corner of the one that always fell down back up- and settled back into bed, putting her glasses back on the dresser before she settled her head on the pillow and tried to get back to sleep.

Corrina tossed and turned and woke up for a second time, back on the couch, fully clothed, covered in a torn curtain. Back in the game that would inevitably lead to her death. She sighed. The diversion of her dreams was nice while it lasted.

Corrina, I know just as much about that as you do. Let's not dwell on it. Focus and move on.

She opened her eyes and found herself towered over by a half-familiar boy. Alex? That was it. They’d met earlier, by the helipad. Allison. She and Alex talked a lot, whenever Corrina saw one the other wasn’t far behind. Pronounced dead on the announcements.

Best not to bring that up.

Alright, she just had to thank him now. Say something that wouldn’t make him an instant enemy. She just had to stay calm, and pretend that she wasn’t a wreck right now.

“Hey,” Corrina sat up and forced a smile. “You’re Alex, right? Thanks for waking me up.”

Was this part a dream as well? She was too tired to tell.

It took a couple of seconds for Corrina to emerge from her slumber. Alex got the impression she'd clearly been having a fairly deep sleep, and Alex couldn't help but feel a slight hint of unwanted envy at this thought. He'd given sleep a couple of token attempts, but he'd failed miserably and decided not to waste time with further attempts, and he was feeling the pains of sleep deprivation already.

When Corrina spoke, she quickly asked Alex to confirm that he was indeed named Alex (which, seeing as he was, he nodded silently...okay, technically, he was named Alexander, but that was neither here nor there), then thanked him for waking her up.

Alex was, for some reason, a bit taken aback at that. He was not expecting her to thank him for waking her up. If anything, he was expecting her to be somewhat angry and disgruntled at the intrusion. In a situation like this, closing your eyes and having a nostalgia-tinted dream seemed like a good thing to do to pass the time and preserve your sanity, and it wasn't like she needed to be woken up at a certain time for an appointment or some shit.

Then again, maybe she was just grateful it wasn't one of the compound's many murderers (or, if you prefer, people doing their patriotic duty) and was grateful Alex hadn't decided to use her as an easy kill.

A bit unsure of how to reply to the unexpected thanks, Alex mumbled a bit before giving a coherent response. "Erm...yeah. Hi. Just noticed the door was open and was wondering if anyone was here." He took a half-step back and pointed to the door. "If you want," he continued "I can go. I mean, I don't wanna invade on your privacy or anything."

He wasn't sure what answer he wanted. On one hand, being able to leave without appearing rude and going back to his quiet sulking would mean he could safely stay under the radar and delay witnessing any further atrocities in the Program. On the other hand, maybe Corrina could be a good ally or something?

Alright, now that Corrina knew that no, she wasn't dreaming this time, and that no, Alex wasn't planning on murdering her, she could rest a little easier.

Well, she couldn’t rest since she’d been found now, but the point remained that she’d found someone who wasn’t outwardly hostile too her and, aside from the initial awkwardness of it all, was actually trying to start a conversation with them.

Mom and Dad would be proud, Corrina.

Alex asked if she minded him being there, if she’d rather he leave so she could go back to sleep. Corrina checked her watch. No real point, she guessed. It hadn’t been too long since she’d settled down, but it’d been long enough for the grogginess to have lifted. If she tried to drift back off to sleep now, she was certain she wouldn’t be able to.

"I... No," Corrina looked up at him. "No, it's fine, I don't mind. Not much privacy with the cameras anyway."

Which was true. The main reason she had gone to sleep fully clothed was because someone had decided to put the couch right in view of a large plastic box hanging from the ceiling. That and the fact that she’d left the bag with her sleep clothes downstairs. She’d have to pick that up if it was still there.

Had to be, no one would steal her clothes.

For a brief second, Corrina’s wondered how anyone went to the toilet in this place with the cameras everywhere. Then she remembered the hundreds of montages she’d been sent of people crapping during the program. Apparently people found that sort of stuff funny.

Corrina shook her head and kicked back the curtain still half covering her and turned around so she was sat facing Alex. She crossed her legs as she sat on the couch, a weird habit she'd started at six on her first day of real kindergarten when the teacher taught them to sit cross-legged on the floor to sit easier. They didn’t tell Corrina you weren’t supposed to do it on the chairs. She’d been weeded off it by age, but she kept the habit for some occasions.

She still did when she was nervous, better than biting fingernails or chewing, or just when she wanted to think.

For once, it was the latter.

“So where were you headed?” She inquired, out of sheer curiosity more than any kind of maliciousness. “I just came in here to try and get some sleep before morning.”

Corrina sat up, and responded to his question by saying he was free to stay.

Alex wasn't sure whether to be happy or upset about that. On one hand, company was company, it was a pretty surefire way of not getting insane, and the improbable, miniscule chances of them spotting some easily-exploitable loophole in the system and escaping may increase the more sane eyes they had looking for one. And, despite his terrible luck thus far, maybe he was being thrown by a bone by someone up there by meeting up with someone who, on first impressions, hadn't been turned into a psychopathic nutjob.

On the other hand, she could very well be a psychopath, just one of those intelligent ones who decided to wait until he let his guard down then, erm, knocked him unconscious and locked him in a storage cupboard to be quietly disposed of later.

Then again, would death be that bad? You haven't really got anything else to live for, the sooner you get out of it the...

No.

Close that train of thought immediately. Don't think about anything it's saying. Alli wouldn't want you to give up.

But what have you got to live fo...

Lots of things. Alex was sure there were lots of benefits to living, that if he did somehow survive intact and with no serious mental problems, he'd still live an interesting and fulfilling life.

At this point, before Alex could further argue with some lingering, persistent fucker of a voice in his head, Corrina spoke up, asking him where he'd been headed. Not knowing WHERE he had been thinking of going to or WHAT he had been thinking of doing, he fumbled with his words for a second before replying. "Oh. Nowhere. Just...wandering about. Doing stuff. Trying to survive the storm."

Still groggy, Corrina nodded. She wasn't exactly sure why she nodded, but it seemed like it was appropriate to nod, so she nodded. She stifled a yawn with her hand and let her arms fall limply to her lap.

It was then that Corrina realised she had been wearing not only the dumb beanie Thomas had bought her the whole time she’d been there, but her glasses, too. Thinking she should probably ditch them before they got in the way, got stolen, got broken or something, she looked down, trying to figure where she could put them. Her glasses, only reading frames but she’d just gotten used to wearing them everywhere that she thought she looked odd without them. They came off, stowed in the pocket of her pants. The beanie was next, though that went in the pocket of her cardigan when she realised it just wasn’t going to fit in her pants.

Corrina looked back up at Alex and coughed awkwardly. For a minute she’d forgotten he was sitting there. Start a conversation; take the awkward away, say something, Corrina.

“Um…” Yeah, she had nothing. All that acting really paid off.

Oh, right, yeah. Corrina had failed Drama that semester. Oh well.

Looking back at him, her thoughts wandered back to the helipad. He'd been arguing with the other boy- Bret. What had happened to them? Did they team up? Split up? Corrina didn't want to ask. They didn't seem to have been getting along when she was there, so she didn't want to pry. Inquire if it became important, leave it if it didn't. Seemed like a good strategy.

Corrina decided, though, that it was best to get on the subject of the whole Helipad dead anyway, in case he did in fact notice her before. Plus at least then they’d have something to talk about.

"I saw you earlier," She stated, flicking a little bit of hair out of her eyes. "At the helipad, I mean. You probably didn't notice me."

Great conversationalist she wasn't, but it was a start. Not being a bitch was such a chore.

Every now and then, when having a casual conversation with his father, Alex would make a slightly edgy or politically incorrect (not that that concept had much support in the General's America) joke. Most times, his father would laugh along with the joke, if not counter it with an even more offensive one. But, sometimes, seemingly at random, his father would perceive some random link to his mother in the joke, and despite Alex seeing no possible way he could have been aware of how sensitive the subject was, Fred Tartaglia would get furious at Alex for no reason and consider his joke a subtle attack at his deceased mother.

Alex hated it when people did that, when an offhand comment somehow offended a hidden delicate sensitivity someone had, and, despite it in no way being your fault, the person in question would always chew you out on it. Alex really could empathise with the reasons some of the culprits had (but, after so many years, Alex's dad really should have stopped being so sensitive), but as a whole the habit was annoying, illogical and awkward, and often made friendly conversations difficult to salvage.

But, when Corrina mentioned the helipad offhandedly, Alex began to commit the very same offence.

"Oh...yeah" he muttered in response, staring at a rather small, jittery black bug on the floor a couple of feet away from him. "Yeah. I didn't see you. You didn't really make yourself known, I'm guessing. I mean, nothing much was going on." He paused to breathe. For some reason unknown to him, his hands were shaking ever slightly. He wasn't cold, and he didn't feel scared. "I mean, if you weren't hiding, I musta been pretty stupid not to notice you. Wasn't really occupied with much."

With the bug he was eyeing crawling beneath the crouch out of site, he stared vacantly at the ceiling, clicking his tongue in an attempt to quietly defuse his frustration, rage and irritation that Corrina had somehow brought out. "Just...having a gun pointed at me by one of the biggest douches in the school, ate a brownie...oh, and my best friend plunged off the top of the helipad to her death..." He paused, and stated his next question in an almost accusatory tone. "Suppose you weren't around to see that?"

Within a few minutes, Alex would be hit by a slow wave of guilt for his overtly hostile, unprovoked mini-rant at Corrina, accompanied with a new batch of depression. But for now, meh, he couldn't really care less. And, before turning out, he muttered an illogical "Gah, fuck this shit." He scrapped the door with his brass knuckles on his way out in frustration.

((I'll pretty this up later, just to get the death moving.))

Corrina shook her head at the leaving Alex. Again, someone had left her. Corrina thought that this time, with Alex, she'd found someone she could team up. But no, she'd blown it.

Dejected, she began to set up her bed again, forgetting to close the door. She pulled her hat over her eyes, threw the curtain over herself, and tried again to get back to sleep.

((The Mason Twins continued from Deception))

After leaving the barracks far behind them, Sophie and Stephanie preceded to make their way back to the officer's quarters. After all, it had proven to be a reliable hunting ground thus far, and neither of them had any reason to believe that it would be any different now.

Besides... Sophie was hoping to find either Luke Mendoza or Bryant Carver and shut them down before they can spread word of the fact that she and Stephanie were working together. That was the LAST thing they needed now. It was hard enough earning people's trust when they knew that one of them was playing, let alone if they knew that they BOTH were playing. She'd learnt from her mistakes after she tried to convince Juliet Watanabe to help them out, only to be forced to run away like some kind of coward.

Still, it wasn't too late to make amends for that mess-up. If by some miracle she found Marilyn again, she knew where to look for Juliet. Then, after their happy reunion, she could have Stephanie remove them both from the game at the same time with a well aimed shotgun spread. Provided of course, that somebody didn't beat her to the punch. Which itself was a perfectly fine outcome, considering the fact that she wasn't particularly keen on having a particularly high kill count added to their names to draw the attention of wannabe vigilantes and vengeful loved ones.

However, as the twins searched several rooms for any signs of life, it quickly became evident that they weren't having any luck that day. Perhaps everyone else in the compound were somewhere else, trying desperately to stay out of the way of the more dangerous players like Madeline Harris. Sophie was about to suggest that they give up and search a different building for a change, when suddenly something caught her eye as she leaned her head through the fifth open doorway in a row.

Namely the sleeping figure of one of her classmates. Perfect. This shouldn't be a problem...

"Stephanie, I..." she whispered to her sister, only to stop mid sentence when she looked into Stephanie's eyes. She could practically tell what was on her more sensitive sister's mind as she saw what Sophie had found, judging from the tears that were beginning to well in her eyes. And, despite the fact that up to this point Sophie had tried her best to get her own hands dirty, there was just no way she could bring herself to force Stephanie to kill someone in their sleep like that.

"I.... I'll deal with this." she whispered with a deep sigh.

"R-Really?!?" Stephanie replied.

"...Yes. Just stay there and keep a lookout, this shouldn't take long......"

And, on that note, Sophie took a deep breath and sneaked into the room, clutching tightly to the crowbar which she had been assigned with. She took extra care not to awaken the sleeping girl who would soon become her first kill. The first life whom Sophie would have taken away with her own bare hands. She knew that it was bound to happen eventually since the second she heard her name being called out during the Announcement Day. It was an inevitability which anyone with the slightest hope of wishing to live would have to accept or die. Still, that didn't make it any more of a difficult task to stomach, and Sophie still wasn't sure if she was 100% ready to take the guilt that was required for such an macabre task.

Still, here she was, standing over the unconscious body of a girl whose life she was about to extinguish. Thankfully, seeing as her blue hat covered her face, Sophie didn't fully recognise the girl before her. Good, that meant that she could distance herself from what she was about to do. She could dehumanise the girl before her and do what needed to be done without feeling regret about it. She wasn't a person. She wasn't simply a child like her who'd been caught up in this horrific experiment. She didn't have a family, a name, a face, or even a future ahead of her. She was simply a sack of bones and flesh that was being run by a steady flow of blood and neurons. And it was Sophie's duty to put her out of her misery rather then suffer at the hands of this game for any longer.

With this in mind, Sophie raised her weapon high above her head, counted to three, and brought it down against her target's unprotected head, right on top of where Corrina's beanie was neatly nestled. No hesitation, no last second doubts.

No regrets.

This could've been avoidable, if you think about it.

There were many angles of what was now occurring that Corrina should have seen coming, or could've prepared for. She could've closed the door again, found something to barricade it, to stop the twins getting into the room in the first place. She could've waited before she went back to sleep, so she was awake when they entered.

She could've woken up in time to notice the attack, if she'd listened to the nagging voice in the back of her mind that was yelling at her to do something. The voice she chose to ignore, in favour of the swirling world of dreams her imagination had conjured up for her. She could've kept her beanie in her pocket, making it harder for Sophie Mason to go through with it.

She could've not gone to sleep at all, in fact. She could've gone downstairs and picked up her bag, leaving the twins to find an empty room when they opened the door.

But as Corrina Susana Landrey lay there, dreaming peaceful scenes of back home, it was too far gone to do anything.

The crowbar crashed down on her skull.

No second chances.

(Louis Johnson continued from The Opening Faceoff)

He felt slightly stupid. He had no idea where Stefanie was. Or the killers he could be hunting, so he had simply wandered around for a while. He had made it back to the Officer's Quarters. He wasn't sure why he picked there, after all what was he going to do, go talk to the newly revealed killer, Brett Torres, and tell him he found a box cutter?

Yeah. Coming back to the Officer's Quarters was a dumb decision, but he didn't know what else to do. It was a big place actually, he had wandered the halls for a bit hoping that he would find someone.

He didn't.

He had wandered back to a familiar area, the lounge he had slept in was nearby. That's when he looked down.

Shit my shoe's untied, guess I'll tie it now.

As Stephanie stood guard outside the lounge with her shotgun, waiting patiently as Sophie did what had to be done, she couldn't help but wonder whether or not it would all be worth it in the end.

After all, nobody really knew what happened to those who survived. She'd overheard some of her classmates discuss the subject during lunch on more then a couple of occasions. Some claimed that they were given new identities so that they could live anonymous lives without having to worry about the media. Others suggested that they become enrolled into some kind of secret project or military task-force, a prospect Stephanie didn't particularly like the sound of.

But that was nowhere near as awful as the idea that she'd heard from one particular conversation that had been haunting her ever since she realised that she'd been enrolled into the program. That the winners were taking to some secret location and executed in order to make sure things didn't get overcomplicated. Despite the fact that she constantly told herself over and over again that executing the winner would be a complete waste of time, seeing as it would of made the entire existence for the program entirely pointless, a small part of her was deathly afraid that she and Sophie were only delaying the inevitable. That as soon as it looked like they would survive, they would be repaid for all their hard work with a nonchalant gunshot to the back of the head.

No Stephanie, don't think like that. You've got to stay strong, stay vigilant. Don't lose hope now whilst you're so far ahead!

As she stood there silently for what felt like aeons, a noise suddenly caught her attention. Not the sickening sound of Sophie crowbar carving in some poor soul's skull, but the simple sound of someone walking down a nearby corridor. NO! Ohgodohgod, what should I do!?!

She was shaking. In all honestly, she didn't actually expect anyone to show up. After all, the officers quarters didn't SEEM that busy, and Sophie had told her that most of her classmates were probably staying far away from the building because of the bloody reputation it had earned. But here she was, standing outside the lounge with a shotgun waiting for whoever it was to rear their ugly head around the corner...

...Only, whoever it was had stopped. She couldn't tell why, but judging from their shadow they seemed to be leaning over for some reason. Had he/she dropped something on the floor? Should she take this opportunity to remove whoever it was from the competition? Stephanie had never considered killing anyone who Sophie hadn't instructed her to kill... Maybe this would be her opportunity to finally prove that she was trustworthy? Yes, that sounded like a good idea. She'd make it quick, make sure that whoever it was didn't have to suffer at the hands of a more sadistic player. Not only would she be saving someone from dying a potentially painful death, she would also be earning her sister's praise at the same time!

With this plan in mind, Stephanie took a deep breath and slowly made her way towards the corner where the stranger was hiding behind. She'd have to be quick, kill whoever it was before they could see her coming and defend themselves. Not only would she have to make sure NOT to miss, she would have to make sure that she hit her target in the head or the heart. Anywhere else would mean a more painful death, something she was trying to avoid at all costs. The memory of Henry's dying screams still chilled her to the core...

It was now or never. Once she stepped around the corner, she would have to raise her gun and pull the trigger. Finish him/her off before anything could possibly go wrong. Well, here goes...

However, as she stepped around the corner and raised her shotgun, rather then pulling the trigger and gunning down the stranger right there on the spot, she stopped completely in her tracks with a shocked expression on her face.

"...Louis?!?"

Louis was one of her friends. One of her closest friends to be exact. They shared a couple of classes together, like art and biology, and often liked to hang out after school whenever neither of them had anything better to do. And whilst they weren't an item or anything like that, she still cared deeply about him and was practically heartbroken when she heard his name mentioned during Announcement Day...

...And now she was expected by the rules of the game to kill him.

N..... N-No! No, I can't do that! Not Louis! Thats just... Just...... NO!

"W-W-What are you doing here?!? Get away, NOW, before Sophie notices you!" she told him in a hushed yet undeniably urgent tone of voice. Killing people who she barely knew had proven to be hard enough by itself. People who were close friends, however... No, there just wasn't any way she could bring herself to do such a thing. Not in a million years.

"PLEASE! I'm begging you, go away before its too late!"

He had just tightened the loop when a familiar voice called out his voice. "Stefanie?" Why was he questioning? She was right there, it was pretty obvious. Maybe it was his surprise of finding exactly who he was looking for.

Wait. Leave? Why would he leave? He had just found her. They were supposed to team up to survive. Sophie? Why would Sophie have a problem with him? She had never seemed too hostile to him outside of the Program. Of course everything changed in there.

"Wait what? We can team up the three of us," he said voicing his inner thoughts. Sure it might be weird. He hadn't normally hung out with Stefanie and her sister when they were back at General's Pride, but these were different circumstances.

"Wait what? We can team up the three of us,"

"NO! You don't understand... Its Sophie, she'll.... She'll kill you if she realises you're here!"

Stephanie didn't want to be in this situation. She didn't want to be forced to choose between her sister and her friend. Which was exactly WHY she wanted Louis to get the hint and run away before Sophie finally caught on to what was happening outside.

But Louis as it seemed wasn't in the mood for budging. Of course he wasn't. He wanted to help her out, make sure that his friend was okay. He wanted to hang out with her like they were able to back at General's Pride...

But those days were long gone. Stephanie wasn't the same girl she was back then. She'd become a killer, a heartless murderer who didn't deserve his sympathy. She'd played the game out of her own free will. And whilst she hated every single minute of it, she knew in her heart that she couldn't disappoint her sister by backing out now. Louis, however, wasn't a player. At least, Stephanie didn't THINK he was. She hadn't heard his name mentioned during the announcements at all, and whilst there was the slight possibility that he was just not that good a player she couldn't take the risk of letting him tag along.

Besides, Sophie would have never allowed it. The second she'd of gotten the opportunity, she'd kill Louis to prevent him from being able to stab either of them in the back. No, an alliance was completely out of the question. Stephanie and Sophie Mason were alone on this island, and as far as either of them cared, everyone else was the enemy...

And no matter how much Stephanie wanted things to be like how they used to be, she knew in her heart that it was impossible for that to be the case.

"L-L-Look... If you don't leave here now, I-I'll have to open fire. I don't want to hurt you Louis! I REALLY don't! But if you don't leave, th-then I'll have no other choice!"

On that note, the terrified young girl lifted her gun up and aimed it in Louis's general direction, tears beginning to well up in her eyes for the fifteenth time in a row. "I'm serious Louis! If you don't leave now, I WILL shoot!"

However, despite her protests, Louis didn't budge an inch. If anything, he actually made a step in her direction. He doesn't believe me! Oh god... Oh god, I hope I don't mess this up!

With that thought in mind, Stephanie aimed the sights of her gun a few feet to the left of Louis and pulled the trigger. It was a warning shot, and nothing else, seeing as she had zero intentions of actually going through with her threat. But at the very least, it should be more than enough to convince Louis to run away as fast as possible.....

After all, there was no way on earth that Sophie couldn't of heard that shot.
