Reconstruction

Mostly untouched, this natural rain forest sits on the far east side of the island, providing a marked contrast to its strictly regulated cousin. One of the defining features of the resort, very prominently displayed in every brochure, the only sign of civilization is a small wooden booth labeled "Jungle Safari" on a crude wooden sign a few hundred feet down the only pathway leading in.

Reconstruction

((Blue #2: Anna Hitchins continued from Somehow Precious))

After the business had been done, they had gotten moving.  They knew they had to find the last of their friends, get her a proper burial.  They had ended up doubling back through the rain-forest.  Putting distance between them and the grave site helped Anna; even now she was imagining herself as a famed archaelogist, slicing her way through Amazonian jungle looking for the lost Weequay tribe, with help from her large, African guide.  It's true the scissors weren't exactly a machete, and Marcus wasn't exactly a native from a backwards tribe, but all she needed was a little imagination.

"How far until the river, Mugumba?"  She muttered, unaware she said it loud enough for Marcus to hear.

...Bitch, you just call me Mugumba?

That probably would have been the first thing out of Marcus' mouth if they were back home. Call her out on her insane little mutterings and insinuate she was being racist. But here on this island, none of that really mattered, and Marcus wasn't exactly in the mood to be poking fun at Anna and her insanity. He was still thinking Anthony and Devonte, and their graves in the forest. He was still thinking about carving out a spot in the ground with that rock, and laying Anthony in. Piling rocks and sticks on top of him, making sure he was well buried beneath it all.

Damn it, Anthony...

"Mm? I don't think there is a river."

Normally, Marcus could keep up with Anna and Anthony's banter. They talked movies all the time, and for the most part, he could recognize the movies. He could even throw in a few quotes of his own. But Anna's comment went over his head this time. All he could do was shrug, keep on walking, and think of something to say.

"You ever wonder where that guy wandered off to?"

Probably not the best of subjects to bring up, but it was on Marcus' mind.

Anna shrugged.  "Maybe he went off on his own to find the lost city of gold." Her eyes widened.  "We have to get to it first, before he finds the hidden artifact of power and bring about the end of the world!"

She quickened her pace, decided by whatever fiction it was rolling around in her head.

"Come, my African guide!  We must hurry before it is too late!"

She pushed on through a particularly dense piece of brush and caught her ankle on a root.  She fell over it, planting facefirst into the dirt.

She didn't move at first.  She was content to lay there and bite back some stinging tears.

The pain seemed to bring her back to herself.  She drew her hands in and laid her head on top of them.

"Does it ever fucking end!?"

A voice echoes from Anna's collar...

"It may end alot sooner then you think, for the both of us, if you don't get your act together, my little angel. Take a progressive stance and maybe you'll be able to see through the end of all this. Cheers."

"...Lost city of gold? Like, El Dorado? Does that mean I get to find a banging native chick in skimpy clothing?"

That would be nice. Much nicer than anything else on this damn island. Maybe he could even be treated like a god. Yeah, that would be nice. Impossible, but nice. Marcus was about ready to follow Anna, but she tripped. And landed on her face. Ouch.

"You alright?"

He knelt down next to her, and waited for her to say something. But she didn't. She didn't do anything for a while. But eventually, she did move, and she did speak, and Marcus didn't know what to say after that. What could he say? Telling her that it does would probably be like telling her they were going to die. Telling her that it doesn't... well, that was just about as bad.

"We'll get through this, Anna. I promised, remember? I'll protect you, and we'll get through all this shit together. But first, why don't we get through this damn jungle? Find El Dorado."

He put his hand out in front of her. Y'know, to help her up. That was his job. If they fall, he picks them back up. If they're upset, he does his best to make them feel better. That was his job. He was, after all, a big brother.

But how long could he keep this up?

The voice chimed in Anna's ear, and the angel comment appealed to her cultural senses.

"Alright Charlie.  I'm on it."

She started to push herself off of her face, but Marcus's proffered hand made it much easier.  Once standing, she pulled her shorts back down (in the fall they had ridden up to a near unacceptable level) and brushed some of the dirt off the front of her blouse.

"Yes.  El Dorado.  We can find it, right?  Mugumba, you're the best guide I've ever had."

She started to walk again, but stopped and looked over her shoulder at her companion.

"Banging native chicks as far as the eye can see, my friend."

Insane little white girl as his charge, and a quest for El Dorado. Why did this seem so familiar? But seeing as how Anna was getting pretty far ahead of him already, Marcus wasn't about to waste time thinking about it and ran to catch up with her. He wouldn't mind finding some banging native chicks, even if he knew they were an impossibility. Even if they weren't going to find them, he could still think about them. Banging native chicks as far as the eye can see... That would be fucking wonderful. But all he had was Anna, and those shorts riding up her backside.

Hmm...

Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.

Ah well. Back to the task at hand. Hacking his way through a damned rain forest in the middle of fucking nowhere. Branches and underbrush smacking and scraping against him every few feet, running into things Anna so easily bent underneath. But damn, could she bend...

Fuck man, thats Anthony's girl. Can't be thinking that shit. He was supposed to be protecting her, not ogling her. The thought of banging native chicks fucked up his concentration, and not really having to worry about other people for a while made him forget just where exactly they were. They were on an island in the middle of nowhere, seemingly lost in a rain forest on said island, in the middle of fucking nowhere, with no idea where they are supposed to be going and murderous little fucks in every direction wanting to be famous or hard or badass or whatever.

Get your fucking head in the game.

They still had work to do. They still had to find Jaszmine.
