Once Upon a Time

Open

Sunshine Tower is a 100 metre tall tower that is located near the centre of the resort area. The towers purpose is for guests of the resort to be able to get a panoramic view of the bay area itself. The top of the tower also has a gift shop with many racks and shelves displaying cliché gifts such as postcards, picture frames and tacky models of the tower for visitors to buy. Normally the easiest route to the top of the tower is by the glass elevator the runs its height. However it has been disabled, so the only way to the top is via a long, spiralling staircase.

[Vincent Holway, continued from First Impressions]

Vincent figured that the tower might be a good place to find some peace and think. However, instead of a sage's solitude he found Vahka and a loony going commando. Great.

With both hands placed in the pockets of his pants, Vincent carefully approached Vahka standing at the bottom of a very long stair case. That probably meant that the lift was not working. Even greater.

Well, since he was here, he could just as well see what was going on. Maybe these two people were not as bothersome as the weeping idiots back at the cabanas. Although, given what he knew of Vahka and that odd person, this may not really be that likely to be.

"Hey Vahka... what the fuck was that guy?"

Taylor continued to laugh in between wheezes as he ran up the stairs. It was pretty difficult to run up 100 meters worth of steps, and he was starting to realize he might of put too much energy into the start of his climb. It didn't look like the beefy guy was running after him, so Taylor could keep going without any fear of being chased. Besides, if he did see the guy following him with murderous intent, he could just drop a grenade behind him and let it roll down the steps.

Taylor finally reached the top, letting out a small cheer before coughing. He bent over, grasping the hem of his skirt and letting out another cough. Some spit fell onto the floor as he did. Once he was done, he looked up and wiped his mouth. He was at the top.

"Alright. I made it to the top," he said aloud. "No way I'm ever going back down."

Taylor began to walk around, humming to himself as he did. His face was still flushed from all the running and stair climbing. It really was a fantastic view. They were at what he assumed was the Pacific coast. Taylor had never seen the ocean before. It would have been nice if it was Summer and the sea was bluer, but it was still an impressive view.

Taylor then found the gift shop. There were a ton of chotchkies and other gifts for people visiting the tower. He began to browse through the stuff.

"Man, to think the owners of this place expect anyone to pay for this crap," he said.

Taylor walked out of the gift shop area and back towards the stairs. No one else had followed him.

"Well, I guess I should take precautions in case anyone comes up," he muttered.

Back home, Vahka probably would have laughed at the voice coming out of his collar. The advice lacked the sort of immediate punch he was looking for, so he would have just shrugged it off and vaulted up the stairs to see what kind of trouble he could get into. That didn't fit the performance, though. In character, he listened to his superiors. Respected them. Followed them unbendingly until they broke him.

"Ten-four, ma'am."

He shifted around, slowly scanning the room with an artist's eye as he went, trying to pick up every detail. There were some trash cans that could be used an improvised weapon. With a crowbar he might have been able to force the elevator doors. What was he missing?

Vincent's voice echoed out behind him. He turned around nice and slow, holding his scan as he went. "Not to sure m'self, Vince. Seemed he was missin' a few marbles, and his undies. Not sure which I'd like 'im t' find first."

His eyes finally found the door on his way to Vincent. Didn't look like he could rip it off or anything, and it wouldn't hide much unless you were pretty...

There was something between the door and the wall. Someone.

"Hey Vince? If I was you, I'd stay right there a sec. Seems we ain't exactly alone. Why don't you come on out, friend?"

If he made it out of here, he needed to be sure to find whoever ran his collar and shake her hand.

((Resuming posting now))

Riley watched from her silent spot that Taylor (who, from her...unfortunate point was not wearing underwear for god knows what reason) raced up the steps. That was a good sign, it meant the other guy was alone now, so if she was clever she could nab his bag and scram before dress!Taylor came back down.

Then she heard his voice, and froze. Was he talking to her? When did-no, whatever he was saying, looked like he was talking to himself. Oh, crap, his mentor probably. Could he ask for help like that? Last season it was one mentor message a day, Riley thought, but if they changed it, that made sense. So for now, she was all safe.

She didn't hear a response of any kind, so either the mentor said nothing or was too quiet. Either way, she had no idea what was going on now. Then some guy came in, as quick as that just appearing out of nowhere. She had never seen him before and Riley was good with faces, so he must've been from the other school. He looked mad, though, so that was a bad sign.

Riley didn't want to move from her spot, at least until she was alone, or like if they left together and Taylor came back. But it looked like they were striking up a chat, which was bad news for Riley. It meant more time for them to spot her.

Shit.

Riley's heart damn near stopped when huge guy called out, glancing right at her. What was she going to do? Did she have any options? Not really, because staying meant they'd come and get her and there was no way she'd escape. She could try to run or fight, but there were two of them and both were much bigger than her, so she'd just get caught. Plus new guy could be armed with anything and that was a huge risk to deal with. So after a moment's hesitation, Riley decided to step out.

Hopefully this wouldn't get her killed.

Riley slowly stood up, hoisted her bag, and stepped out from behind the door with the knife clenched in her hand. "Well, I guess that didn't last." She chuckled sheepishly.

The game made people snap, nothing really surprising for Vincent. That was part of the point though, bloodthirsty maniacs sitting in front of the TV watching as bloodthirsty maniacs in the TV were created and thus started to slaughter each other.

What surprised Vincent that they snapped by wearing a dress, discarding their underwear and act as if... he couldn't think of a simile that managed to grasp his bewilderment sufficiently.

Vincent sighed and set a step forward, but Vahka told him to freeze, as there is somebody else in the room. At that point, Vincent slowly began to seriously wonder why he thought of the tower as a good place to go to. Vahka, sure, he could bear with him. But then there were Mr. Gothic Lolita and some person who believes that they had to hide from them. There was no way this could turn out well.

A slight movement of the head and Vincent looked at the door Vahka was watching. He was right, it opened, and in there an unknown girl stepped out, knife held in her hand.

"No, that it really didn't. I hope you're not going to make any trouble." He gazed at her knife. "Because I'm so not in the mood for any shit right now."

Taylor continued to chuckle as he made his way back to the gift shop area. He had a brilliant idea, and he definitely hoped there would be payoff to it. He began to look through the area, surveying all the souvenirs and the furniture they were situated on. He found a few racks of sunglasses and postcards and grinned.

"This will do nicely," he said.

Taylor grabbed a rack of postcards and began to drag it out of the gift shop area. He didn't have much care for it, letting some of the postcards fall onto the floor. He dragged it over to the opening near the doorway. It didn't look big enough to block the doorway, even if he tipped it on its side. He groaned and looked around.

His eyes widened along with his smile when he saw the wooden benches. Those were much larger and bulkier. He could probably jump over them if he needed to clear out the building, but if he tipped them the right way, he could create a wall.

Ooh, maybe I can push one down the stairs if someone comes charging towards me.

Taylor dropped the postcard rack and ran over to one of the nearby benches. He bent to one side and began to push the wooden bench across the room, pushing it towards the stairwell. It was heavier than the postcard rack, and he was sure it was scraping the floor from how he pushed it, but he kept going. When he got it towards the door, he tried tipping it to one side. The bench could block the doorway as best as he could. The door area to the observation deck was open, so he couldn't entirely block it. But putting the bench in the way would surely help.

"Alright. I should reinforce it somehow. Now let's see..."

Taylor began to look around. He could surely push more benches towards the door. That's when his eye caught the postcard rack. He was kind of disappointed in it. It was unable to do much for him. Not even the postcards had any value here. That's when he looked up and noticed the balcony area. A grin appeared on his face.

Taylor grabbed the postcard rack and walked over to the balcony area, pushing open a door and making his way outside. He was hit with a cold gust of air, making his jacket and skirt flutter in the air. He had to push down on his skirt in order to keep it from flapping up.

Hah. There's my Marilyn moment. I bet that'd make good fanart.

With the door open, Taylor pulled the postcard rack onto the balcony with him, dragging it behind him. It really was a great view. The balcony had a glass banister going around the tower, with an open view for anyone to look out and see the resort. It was exactly what he needed.

Taylor bent down and tried to pick up the postcard rack with both hands. He felt his arms shake as he tried to, with a cold gust of wind making it somewhat harder to keep up. He finally managed to get the rack onto the banister and held onto it. He then cleared his voice. He needed to speak loudly and clearly.

"HEY!" he screamed. "HAPPY SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST, MOTHERFUCKERS! WOOOOOOOOOOO!"

With that, Taylor pushed the postcard rack off the balcony. He watched the rack plummet 100 meters before smashing into the ground below. He didn't see anyone near the bottom of the tower, so no one got hit by it. There were a few postcards that fell out of the rack as it fell that were slowly falling towards the earth like cherry blossom petals. Some got blown away in the wind, carried across the arena. Taylor burst out laughing.

"Oh man, anyone who comes across that is going to have to wonder what the fuck that's about!" he shouted as he continued to laugh.

Taylor remained on the balcony. He could enjoy this site for a little longer.

Vahka shook his head at Vincent's harsh analysis. He wasn't too keen on starting trouble just yet, since he didn't know what Sunshine was up to or what Vincent's angle was. Keeping things nice and calm had a good flavor.

"Now now," he began, "that ain't-"

He had more to say, but his attention was drawn by the loud crash of a display rack in front of the door. A low whistle slipped out as he cocked an eyebrow.

"Looks like Sunshine up there wants attention."

Riley was terrified beyond all belief until the smaller guy (who was still pretty big) spoke.

It was a good sign to Riley that he wanted no part in violence, and she felt the knot in her gut ease a bit. If they weren't openly hostile, Riley wasn't about to make trouble, at least not when she was outnumbered. Preference for nonviolence was easier to ignore when some crazy chick attacked you, and Riley was also outsized.

No, an offense would be a poor plan. What she needed was diplomacy right now. Riley's sheepish smile did not fall off as she spoke. "Yeah, sorry. I've just been freaking out and didn't want people to find me." She scratched the back of her head nervously. "So uh, yeah, glad you're not violent. What's up?"

Almost as if by magic, what was up came down. There was a huge crash that made Riley jump and squeal in terror, but a moment later she realized it was merely a large...shelf? What the hell? There were postcards too. "What the fuck was that all-oh." It made a lot more sense when the shouting came down and, faintly, Riley was pretty sure it was Taylor's voice.

"What an idiot."

The girl didn't knew how much Vincent could share her sentiment. What would he give for a moment without running around a person wi-

A great crash broke his line of thought and stunned Vincent. He looked at the broken shelf outside, as well as the few post cards slowly falling to the ground. Then, a voice announed it's presence, coming from Vincent's collar. It must have been his mentor. He didn't like her already, and only partly because she hurt his ears.

"Seriously? Seriously!? What did you expect? A bunch of rabis teens in a place like this is so obviously going to cause havoc."

Vincent sighed once, content to have thrown this at his mentor. Well, she better got a good insurance on this, though Vincent would laugh at the company dumb enough to cover this place.

Now, he wanted a calm place to contemplate his situation and he will obviously not find it with that idiot running amok above.

"I am in favor of strapping that nutjob to something, because I am sure as hell not going to give another good place up again."

"Hahahahahaha! Oh...shit! That was fun," Taylor said, wiping tears away from his eyes.

He was still bemused by the site of the trashed postcard rack 100 meters below. It was such a bizarre idea to have, but he felt it was such a good idea. When they cobbled together the footage of his time on SOTF, they would surely have to put something as awesome as that in. Hell, just him shouting in the sky could be used in promos or other media. He was sure to have grabbed their attention now, so he needed to keep them entertained.

"Well, time to go back inside," he said.

It was still chilly out on the balcony, and he couldn't keep pushing down on the skirt for long. That just made his hands chilly. He hurried back into the room. Once he stepped inside, he looked at the bench he had blocking the doorway. He'd have to reinforce it. Surely, people would want to come up and know why postcard racks were trying to fly.

"Heh. I wonder if anyone down there thinks there was a fight going on up here. Just imagine: a fight where postcard racks get chucked at each other, and one of them falls off the side. That shit's so cray."

Taylor walked over to another of the wooden benches. He began to chuckle and hum to himself as he pushed it up to the bench blocking the door. He shoved it against the first bench, hoping it could reinforce the barrier he set up.

"Hmm," he muttered. "Needs more stuff."

Taylor turned and walked back to the room. There was plenty of furniture up here, and it should provide a sturdy barricade. The tower was his, and he was starting to like the new sense of ownership he had over it.

Vahka's hand clasped around the loose wooden prayer beads under his shirt. They needed a plan. His mentor had been right about checking things out down here, and he didn't want to piss that away by charging off somewhere new right away. Instead, he glanced over at the stairs for a moment and worked a bead between his fingers through the fabric.

"I'm all for takin' him out, Vince," he began slowly, "but I think that plan's got one serious hole. Three of us against the crazy? Good. Three of us, charging up one stairwell, against the crazy who might have a gun? That's not gonna turn out so well."

Ponderous shoulders rolled into a shrug as he regarded the rooms occupants. None of them were on the same team, and didn't have much to gain working with each other. Still, they might be able to get something here, even if it was just a peaceful walk out. He cocked an eyebrow at the girl who'd been hiding behind the door. "I'm drawin' a blank on you, shortstop, so I'm guessin' you're from the other school with this piece a work. What's his deal?"

Vahka wasn't too inclined to trust her yet, but she didn't have anything to gain from helping Sunshine over them. Maybe she wanted him put down just as much as they did. She'd been hiding from him too, after all.

Riley was afraid. She felt out of place, awkward and nervous, because these two had a rapport, and if they wanted, they could easily flip on her and there wasn't much she could do to get away besides run really fast. Riley was not a fast runner.

That meant she needed to trust them, or rather, get them to trust her, long enough that she'd get away safely. Especially since they were probably planning on killing Taylor, and while Riley didn't have a friendship or anything with him (and besides, couldn't afford to feel pity anymore), she didn't know that being on the announcements, especially in a group, was helpful. Even if she didn't directly take him out, precedent implied she'd get a mention which made her dangerous which made her unsafe.

Best to try and worm her way out of this before anything went down.

"Yeah, you've got a point." Riley nodded. "If we make our intentions clear, Taylor, the guy, he can keep us out. So uh, I think trying to trick him would work, if you're trying to get to him. Right?"

Her nerves showed. That was bad.

"Alright, a plan."

Vincent did not actually want to kill the person above. He found him annoying, sure, and pretty instable, but there was just this desire to fix that guy down somewhere and make him shut up for a while. Then he'd have a calm place - he had to share, but life wasn't fair - and could release the nutjob once he was about to leave again.

That said, his two temporary companions might have a different opinion.

"I guess we need someone to go up first and scout the area, while the others stay close behind but can flee once shit gets down. If we're lucky, that guy is too mad to even have proper tactics."

((From this point on, all GMing has been approved by all parties involved))

"Eh, that should be good for now," Taylor said, looking over his barricade.

It wasn't much, but two benches against the doorway should surely make it hard for anyone to get in. At the same time, it probably made things clear that the tower was claimed.

"I think I've earned a break," Taylor said.

He chuckled to himself as he moved away from the barricade and towards his backpack. He sat in a chair and began to rifle through his bag. He pulled out the Subway sandwich and unwrapped it. He wasn't entirely sure what was in the sandwich, but he knew he'd have to eat it all. If he got out of here, Subway might want him to do some commercials or adverts. If that Jared guy could make millions eating Subway, surely he could as well.

Taylor chomped into the sandwich and grinned. It wasn't normally the kind of sandwich he'd eat, but he was going to enjoy it regardless.

"Delicious!" he shouted. "I guess I'll have to make Subway my one stop shop for sandwiches after this.

Taylor reached into his bag. He needed a drink to go with it. As he felt around, he found another of the issued grenades. He pulled it out and stuffed it into his jacket pocket with the other one. It might be good to have another on hand, and they weren't that heavy to carry around. Taylor continued to eat the sandwich in peace.
