Unlike the east side of the village, the west side of the housing has remained in much the same condition it was left in. The houses here are all in the same state as they were when they were first built, the identical houses all sitting in identical rows with the only difference being their color. The interior of the houses all share the same layout, with a shared living area/kitchen and a separate bedroom. The state of these rooms is surprisingly clean and consistent throughout the western side of the village as well, with all the beds appearing to have been made and the houses tidied, with chairs tucked into the kitchen table before the residents departed.

Welp. Spoke too soon.

“Holl’on, stay here,” Charelle said, giving some sort of… gesture thing to Yuko as she got up off her chair, started walking out her room and to the other room. Couldn’t hustle because her knee was bein’ a real jerk right now (ugh) but she tried to make good time, get to where the rest of the group was before things like, blew up and stuff. Sorta wasn’t sure ‘bout what was happening because she hadn’t actually been listening to all of this right now but the short of it seemed to be that Ty (oh, hey Ty) and… Demetri? Kitty Kat? had been beefing. Kinda hard to say anything specific without the proper context and shit but this seemed okay. Easy to calm down. Kinda like that shit every sitcom family went through when they'd, like, be happy again by the end of the episode?

...Yeah, you caught her. She'd never watched an episode of F.R.I.E.N.D.S in her life. She'd put her paws up if there weren't, like, a possible actual gun 'bout to come out right now.

“Yo, guys,” she said, walking further into the room. “Calm down. We can like, talk this out and stuff. No need to get angry.”

Katrina could feel the nodachi wobbling in her hands. It was getting hard to keep holding it up and out towards Tyrell, but she was almost too afraid to put the blade down. If she did, it could just mean Tyrell would be able to do to them what he did to Chris. Demetri’s ranting wasn’t necessarily the most comforting response, but if what he said was true, it didn’t sound like Chris was the sort of person who would try to kill someone.

That made Katrina start to slowly move her feet on the floor, not enough to really move anywhere, but enough to make it clear to the rest of her body that she was going to approach this guy with her ginormous sword. Tyrell even told her to not threaten him because he needed a break. Katrina nodded a bit, pretty much ignoring Charelle as she came back in.

“O-okay,” Katrina said. “You want a break. That’s fine. But can you go somewhere else to do that? There’s a lot of houses here and I’m sure some are empty.”

Katrina took one step forward, keeping the tip of the blade pointed at Tyrell’s chest.

“Please. Just go.”

It seemed like things were going alright. Yuko was passing the time with Charelle and everyone was just resting up. Until the commotion broke out in the other room. Charelle told her to stay, but of course she didn’t stay put. Yuko slung her bag over her bag and rushed to join everyone in the next room.

Her breath caught in her throat at what she saw. Tyrell Lahiti, a pretty imposing guy in any situation, was standing there covered in blood and holding a crowbar. Katrina and Demetri looked like they were trying to get him to back off, with Katrina holding her sword right to Tyrell’s chest. Yuko’s eyes darted between Tyrell’s bloody face, the crowbar, and the sword. How did this happen? A few seconds ago they were all just hanging out, and then…

Yuko gripped her bag tightly. Her hands were shaking. This was it. The game, the killing, it was happening. It’d found them. They weren’t prepared, she wasn’t-

No. Yuko took a deep breath. She had to stay brave. She had to help the others stay brave. It was just one guy with a crowbar against five of them. They were fine. She just had to make sure things didn’t get out of hand.

“Hey, everyone!” she called out “Take a step back. This doesn’t have to get ugly.”

Yuko looked Tyrell up and down, and she couldn’t suppress a shiver. She took a step towards him and tried to stand tall.

“Ty... it’s best if you just leave. Go to another house. We can all just go our separate ways.”

Ty’s lower lip quivered, and he fell silent.

Why would they listen to me, really?

These people didn’t see someone who had let himself hang at the end of a rope. They didn’t see someone who’d lashed out in the heat of the moment, his only real failure being that his mode of problem solving was far too effective. They couldn’t know that he was just trying to save his girlfriend, and to do that he had to save himself.

All they saw was the blood. Charelle and Yuko had entered the room now, and Ty was beginning to see that the tension here was irreducible at best. The whole reason he'd found himself in this state was because he'd let his guard down, not paying attention to equalizers that turned a manageable conflict into a deadly one.

Most people on this island weren't in a position to physically threaten him, he'd thought. The football players were the ones he'd really had to watch out for. Then, someone half his size managed to get him to the ground. She had training, enough to know how to make his strengths irrelevant. Knew how to use his weight against him, knew that he could do the most damage standing. It was an equalizer he hadn't accounted for, and it cost him in ways he was only just beginning to understand.

None of these people would've been particularly threatening to Ty on their own, but now there were five of them. Pushing this any further was playing a dangerous game, betting that they didn't have other means of stacking the odds even further against him. The blade was inches away. Whatever awaited him in the night outside could only be as dangerous as the situation he was in - it was hard to imagine what would be worse, outside of encountering the Carters or some scared kid with a gun.

I did what was necessary before. Even if it was despicable. I don't have a choice here, either.

Ty suddenly raised his hands in a show of deference, fully prepared to back out the door and find somewhere else to stay. This was no safe haven, not with how on edge all of these people were. He felt stupid, having so stridently declared his intent to stay and now having to back down. It was weak.

Trading a bit of my pride for some good will from these people down the line - that might be worth more than finding a roof over my head right away.

This is necessary, Ty. It's the right thing to do. It's what she'd want you to do. Just back the fuck off. Back off, and find somewhere else.

He'd expected sighs of relief, and cautious stares seeing him out the door. Instead, he saw a flash of movement and jumped back. He felt the leading edge of Katrina's sword cut a shallow path on the outside of his forearm, causing him to drop the crowbar and scramble backwards into Demetri. He cursed loudly, shifting into a defensive posture to help cope with the rapidly devolving situation.

Katrina gritted her teeth as everyone continued to talk. Yuko had now run in and was now loudly shouting and reiterated Katrina's point. Tyrell wasn't wanted here, and he could simply go somewhere else. Katrina kept the sword pointed at him, but started to look around. She looked at each person, her allies and the people she could hopefully survive this game with. They needed this dangerous guy to leave, and then they could all sit around and maybe find something peaceful to do.

She really hoped that Tyrell would just agree and leave, but, as she looked back between Tyrell and Yuko, she noticed some sudden movement. Tyrell was raising his arms with the crowbar in his hand. He wasn't saying anything, and he didn't seem to be looking at anyone in particular. Katrina suddenly got scared. He looked like his immediate response was to slowly raise the crowbar, then smash against her or someone else. Katrina gasped as the image played in her head, and then stepped in place a bit.

It was then Katrina realized that she had misjudged exactly how large the nodachi was, how close she was holding it to Tyrell, and how sharp the blade actually was. The blade cut Tyrell's arm, causing him to drop his crowbar and fall onto Demetri. Katrina took one hand off the sword and covered her mouth.

"Oh, crap," she muttered.

She looked at the blood now starting to ooze out of Tyrell's arm as he cursed and started to adjust himself.

"I-I'm so sorry," Katrina said, foolishly hoping that that was enough to assuage Tyrell and not inspire him to attack her. She really hoped that was enough, cause she wasn't sure what she was supposed to do now.

Felix hadn't said anything up until this point. He was worried that he'd make the situation worse here. Not looking it could really get much worse, here, but... he didn't want to say anything on top of the dumpster fire of words that had already been said. He half-glared at Demetri. Dude did literally the opposite of de-escalating the situation.

But... but it looked like things were going better than expected. Tyrell raised his arms up, looking like he was going to listen, and leave.

But then Katrina slashed at him, drew even more blood, and suddenly Felix was acting more than he was thinking. He quickly pulled the gun, his gun, from its spot nestled within his bag. Felix stood, pointed the gun in Katrina and Tyrell's general direction.

"Y'all are gonna calm down now," he said firmly.

And think about it. Nobody move, that kind of thing. Maybe they'll listen if there were an impetus to stop fucking flailing around.

Clutching his arm, Ty glared at Katrina. All too eager to take the first swing, and yet she was trying to back out now. Of course it'd go that way, she didn't have the strength to follow through and cut him down. To his credit, Demetri didn't seem to be making a move just yet.

What the hell is wrong with me? I'm just going to let these people take me apart piece by piece, huh?

Ty looked at the floor, tiny drops of blood dripping off of the edge of his hand. It wasn't a deep cut, but a long one. He'd done almost as much damage to himself over the years, though never this much at one time. Another point drawn on the map across his body. Another scar to have to explain. He tried to breathe, to calm himself.

I doubt I'll live that long.

It worked. This time, it actually worked. It was just a shallow cut. Katrina was apologizing. There was no danger. Maybe, he could summon up a few tears. Make himself as pathetic as possible. They'd take pity on him, maybe let him stay. Of course, Ty only spoke a good game -they'd learn he was just as much of a coward as the rest of them. They'd talk amongst themselves as he cowered on the ground cradling his arm. Decide they'd misjudged him, and that he'd probably just had terrible luck so far.

I'll use this. They'll stop being afraid. I can just rest. They'll leave me alone.

Felix spoke up, with an air of certainty Ty hadn't expected to hear from him.

Why is he so confident?

Straightening up, Ty's eyes quickly met the barrel of the gun pointed at him. A threat. So much more than Katrina could have hoped to be. It was a true equalizer, an element that took all of the power out of his hands and put it into Felix's. Ty knew that if the other boy wanted to end his life, there was little he could do to stop Felix once that decision had been made.

He hasn't made it. Not yet.

Someone like Felix didn't deserve to hold all of the cards in a place like this. With so little cost to himself, he suddenly got to decide which way this situation went? Someone who just coasted through life, his most notable accomplishments being some lame magic tricks and snarky comments that no one had ever asked for?

After all he'd been through, his fate was in the hands of these people. Demetri and Charelle were a pair of walking internet memes, two sides of a spectrum no one who wasn't a complete loser found entertaining. A self-important so-called "anti-bullying" activist that no one took seriously. A slash-happy choir girl. Topped off by this motherfucker, who was stupid enough to point a gun in Tyrell's face.

You can all go to hell.

Ty grabbed Demetri under the arm and by the collar, casting him off balance and throwing him towards Katrina and Charelle. A small part of Ty hoped that he'd run into the sword, but there was no time to watch and find out.

As he turned to face the other two, he threw a wild haymaker at Yuko. The pain still coursing through his arm spiked in intensity as his fist connected with her face. It didn't hit dead-on, but it must've been hard enough. She crumpled, and was now out of Ty's way.

In a situation like this, some people fought, some ran, and others just froze. Betting on the latter had paid off. Like he'd expected, Felix was either too stunned or too craven to pull the trigger. Ty sprinted at the other boy, channeling his rage into something of a battle cry. The two impacted the wall behind Felix with a dull thud that reverberated through the old structure. In moments he had control of the muzzle, though prying it from Felix's hand was another matter. He repeatedly shoved the other boy into the wall, hoping that the vicious assault would eventually force him to let go and give up control of his weapon.

For a moment it looked like it was going well. Then it fell apart. Katrina slashed at Tyrell, or maybe he walked into her sword. It had happened so fast; it was hard to tell. Felix pulled out a hidden gun and started pointing it everywhere. He had been hiding that the whole time? Yuko considered whether it was time to take out her own- but wait, was that dumb. Wouldn’t that make things even worse While she was thinking that over, Tyrell went wild. He threw Demetri, and took a step towards Yuko.

She froze. His fist came crashing into her face.

Yuko fell over to the side, crashing against a wall. The bag fell from her arm; she crumpled on the ground and laid there. Her head throbbed and the world was spinning around her. Oh God, what was happening? Yuko had taken punches before, but this was a whole different level. Tyrell was a monster. She just wanted to lie there and pray that the pain would go away, that everyone would just leave her in peace and everything would be alright.

But she was Yuko. She was a fighter, a protector. She wasn’t supposed to freeze up in a fight. She wasn’t supposed to lie down and cry as some brute killed her friends. Why had she frozen up?
Yuko forced her eyes open. Everything was a blur, she couldn’t make on shape from another. She reached her hands out, touching the wall. She wasn’t finished. She couldn’t be. They needed her.

Demetri hated having to face the consequences of his own actions- the feeling that he'd done something wrong. And here his body was, battered by a face-full of Tyrell. His feet saw fit to stay still and his body was likewise intent on doing it's best impression of a target. He wasn't doing anything, very suddenly, very distinctly. He had two fists and two feet and the ghost of Karl Marx on his side and he wasn't doing anything to help.

As was typical, of course, progress and calm was being achieved in spite of his quote-unquote 'help'.

Then the very next second of sideline action later and Demetri was hurtling into his grave. Felt like it, the way his head was suddenly left behind from the sheer torque. He had maybe a quarter second to appraise- his reflexes were just barely that good enough. He tumbled into Katrina, Charelle, or the hard granite edge of the kitchen counter. A real gentleman picked the countertop, but Demetri had already swallowed his red pills with water. He had time to yelp something incomprehensible as warning, then he bounced into Charelle with a skidding step.

Probably too close to her breasts but that could be quickly remedied with-

Gunshots.

"Fuc- get down!" He shoved them both to the floor.

Unfortunately for Katrina, Tyrell wasn't going to stop there. Before she knew it, Demetri was suddenly heading towards her and Charelle at speeds she couldn't quite escape. The three of them all collided and fell to the ground. Katrina dropped the nodachi and fell on her side. She let out a short cry and started to crawl on the ground. She reached out and grabbed the nodachi again in case Tyrell came over for her. She quickly noticed Yuko falling to the ground and Tyrell running to Felix. She was about to get up again when there was a loud bang that caused her to crouch down.

Her eyes widened. The gun went off. There were now bullets flying around the place. Someone, or possibly more than one person, were going to die. With her luck, it'd just be Tyrell, but even she knew enough from movies that a gun firing wildly spelled doom for every single person present. She knew without any hesitation in her mind that she was probably going to die here, and the urge to fly away overtook everything.

In an instant, ignoring the fact that her boots were not made for running, and praying she had done enough cardio in her life to pay off here, she moved. With her free hand, she grabbed her nearby bags, moving them up her forearm. She then quickly grabbed the sheath of the nodachi, and within seconds, she was sprinting. She couldn't run to the entrance because of Tyrell and Felix's fighting, so the back room was her only option. She hadn't really looked around the rest of the house, but there surely had to be a back door, right? It was a fire hazard otherwise. She could run out the back door and disappear into the jungle.

Without even looking to see if anyone was following her or chasing her, Katrina hurried to the door, bashing the bags against the door to push it open. As she ran in, her cat-ear headband displaced and her breathing erratic, she prayed she'd just be able to run away before Tyrell decided to pursue her.

Felix never planned to actually fire the gun. He didn't... wouldn't need to, right? He wasn't a killer, and he didn't trust himself to fire of a non-lethal shot. He didn't need to use it. For the first few seconds after he pointed the gun, he was sure of that.

And then in the next instant, he wasn't so sure anymore.

He felt himself collide with the wall before he realized what was happening. He opened his mouth to speak, to say something, because he still thought there was someone there to reason with.

Then he felt himself impact the wall again. A pain exploded in the back of his head, and the room spun. Felix had thought, when he woke up, and when he passed out the first time, that his thoughts couldn't be any more jumbled.

He was wrong. As he repeatedly hit the wall again and again, he couldn't think of any thing but the pain.

He didn't even know when he'd let go of the gun. He didn't know when his glasses had fallen off his head. All he knew was that he couldn't see. His hands were empty. He had nothing, and he had to guess... Tyrell had everything now.

A question struck him then: had he made a bad decision?

The answer struck him not even a few seconds later: yes. It was a loud yes, punctuated by the feeling of his chest exploding.

"Wh-"

He felt himself losing strength in his legs and tipping forward. He pushed back, trying to right himself. All it accomplished was him falling backward onto the wall. He skidded to the floor.

"Wai-... Wait..."

This wasn't supposed to

There was a moment when Ty was holding Felix against the wall, where he seriously considered whether or not what he was doing was at all reasonable. The boy wasn't especially capable of fighting back. Not just because Ty was larger and stronger; he seemingly lacked the willpower to do so. In that brief moment, he had questioned whether or not any of this was really necessary.

It was only a moment. If anything had been impressed upon Ty this first day, it was that no one on this island could afford to take half measures. Katrina and Felix would both learn that lesson before all was said and done.

Ty had made a decision, and now he'd commit to it. After the short struggle, he managed to pry the gun from Felix's grip as the other boy's strength left him. With the weapon now in his hand, Ty pressed it to Felix's chest hard enough it would leave a mark on his skin.

You're not going to forget this any time soon.

The power was back in Ty's hands. These people would fear him, and he'd use that fear to force them to leave. They'd all just leave him alone. He'd have the time to fix himself, to prepare for what was about to come.

"Here's what's going to ha-"

The frightfully loud gunshot caught him off guard. It didn't sound like the kind of distant pops one heard in the city, or the earsplitting thunderclaps from inside a shooting range. It was more of a thump, a sound seemingly muffled by Felix's body. Ty looked on in shock as the other boy pleaded in vain, falling limp in his grasp and sliding to the ground. His gaze hung on a tiny, bloody hole in the wall where Felix had been, and the bloody smear which led to the floor.

"Oh, shit."

It was possible he wasn't dead, right? Erika had gone on at length about how movies and tv never seemed to get it right, how most people actually survived being shot with handguns. That was why some courses had her shoot some targets more than once. It was simulating the tactic people were actually supposed to take because you could never be sure with the bullets that they shot.

It was just one. They could treat him, maybe. It went all the way through - was that better, or worse? Felix wasn't moving. If he was even still alive, he might not even wake up. It wasn't as much blood as Chris lost, but it was still way too much to lose and ever be okay. None of them were doctors or surgeons. It would probably get infected if they tried to work on him.

They'll think the same thing I'm thinking. Probably try to save him. Except they'll not accept it's already over.

It would be waste of their precious time. Though these people were wasting their time already in their failure to address, Ty couldn't do anything about their collective predicament. At least he could spare them the cruelty of trying in vain to save their friend's life.

"Fuck. Sorry about this, Felix."

Ty raised the gun and shot Felix twice in the head. The guy didn't deserve to suffer. For all they'd done, these people shouldn't have to deal with that. He turned to look at the rest of them. Yuko was stumbling from the room, as Demetri and Charelle remained on the floor. Katrina was nowhere to be seen. Ty called out to her.

"Katrina! I think it's time y'all left. "

Katrina quickly scanned the room. There wasn't a back door. That was bad. That severely limited her options for escaping from the house. Tyrell had already fired once, and she knew that meant he now could go through the house shooting whoever he wanted. She'd have to risk it.

Katrina ran to one of the windows and began to open it. The wood had warped a bit, making it difficult for her to get it all the way up. Katrina lifted as hard as she could, ignoring any splinters she was getting, when she heard a second gunshot, causing her to cry out again.

She turned back to the open door. She could hear Tyrell.

Katrina! I think it's time y'all left.

Katrina's eyes darted around. He was after her now, wasn't he? It made sense. She cut his arm, she was probably the best-armed person here aside from Felix, and it sounded like Felix wasn't going to help her now. Tyrell probably saw her as the biggest threat in the house, so he probably wanted her dead next. Katrina had only gotten the window up a quarter of the way, so she wasn't going to get out.

That's when she knew what she had to do. Running got her to avoid the first few gunshots, but now she was cornered. This was what people had to do when they were cornered, right? They had to fight back.

Katrina looked around. She dropped her bags and the sheath near the open window and tried to gingerly dart over to the door. The door had been left ajar when she ran in, so she slipped her small frame behind the door. She clutched the nodachi close to her chest, keeping the blade up. That should allow her one good swing to take down Tyrell.

It was hard to believe this was happening, but Katrina knew it had to happen. She could feel tear welling up in her eyes. It hadn't even been a full day here, but now she was being forced to kill someone. But it had to be done? The gun went off twice, so two people were probably dead, and Tyrell was the only one she knew was still alive. He wanted her dead, so everyone would understand if she killed him, right? She would be forgiven for killing a murderer. She was sure of it.

She heard someone enter the room. It was now or never. She could see a figure moving into the room, and before that person could do anything, Katrina let out a cry, pushed through the door, and swung the nodachi down.

It was after she felt the sword connect with the person that she realized that no one would forgive her for this. No one could forgive her. For that, she let out another cry.

Yuko used the wall to push herself back up. Her friends needed her. Her determination to not let them down was enough to bring her to her feet. Her head was still spinning, but she was starting to regain some clarity. She could see that Tyrell and Felix were fighting, just out of reach. If she could get to them-

A gunshot rang out. Felix, crumpled to the floor, blood oozing from his chest. Two more gunshots. What was once Felix's head turned into a mess of gore. She wanted to look away, or to vomit, but she just stared. Tyrell shouted something, his voice breaking her out of her stupor like it was a clap of thunder. She didn't process what he said. He was here, he had a gun. He was angry, he'd killed Felix. He was going to kill all of them. He was going to kill her

She needed to run.

She couldn't go out through the front, he would get her. Yuko looked for an exit. The back room. There had been windows there. She stumbled as she lurched to the open door. She hadn't fully regained her senses, but she didn't have time. Yuko barrelled into the room.

There was another shout. Different, higher pitched. A white hot pain shot down her torso, from the shoulder to the stomach. Yuko turned towards the source. Katrina, her sword slick with blood. Yuko looked down at herself. It was all coming out of her. This didn't make sense.

"What...?"

She crashed to the floor.
