Carry Stress In the Jaw

Although it's called a hospital, it's really more of an island clinic. It's a relatively small building, covered in whites and pastels to give it a clean and sterile look. Even the waiting rooms and the patient rooms in the back beg for a little color. The cupboards and cabinets still contain various medications prescribed by clinic physicians. It's the opportune place to head if you're needing to tend to a few wounds -- it's also the opportune place to head if you're set on picking off the weak links.

"Tori--" he began, but she cut him off.

"Listen--" he was getting angry with her, primarily because it was obvious that this late in the game there was no room for sympathy. Once he was able to get a word in though, he'd put his foot down. Like it or not. There were at most ten students left, assuming Mari hadn't carved up a few more herself; old bonds had been effectively dissolved under the lurching hands of the clock.

Tori then made an argument that froze him in his tracks. 'Aww Christ,' he thought, his stomach twisting into a knot and choking out his resolve. He bit his lip and mulled it over, trying to convince himself that he didn't really owe this to Seth. But he did. It wasn't a good idea, he didn't like it...shit, Seth had told him to take this opportunity...but he couldn't do it. He just didn't have it in him to kill her here like this.

Bryan tensed up, and for a moment it looked as if he was going to hit something, but there was nothing close enough to hit so he just stomped his heel on the cold floor instead. "Shit!" he snarled, turning the barrel of the gun away from Mari and looking his companion in the eyes.

"Fine, this is what we're going to do. We're gonna take away her weapons, give her some painkillers and wait for it to happen by itself. Grab her gear." With that Bryan activated the safety and slung the SPAS-12 over his shoulder as he knelt down reluctantly to pick up Mari in a fireman carry. 'Don't make me regret this,' he thought as he made his way back to the room and set her down on the bed.

Tori hobbled over and picked up Mari's day pack and riffle she had dropped. She would have helped Bryan carry her, but she could barely carry her self, let along the stuff she was carrying.

When the three made it back to the room, Tori pointed to the bed where she once was, implying for Bryan to put Mari there.

"You go through the weapons.. you know all about them.. and I'll try my best to fix her up."

Come on Mari, you can make it... you've come this far, you can't just quit on us now.

"Whatever," Bryan responded distantly, examining the rifle that was now in their possession and laying it flat on the table. There was what looked like an antique German pistol with a wooden stock inside the daypack, along with a veritable fuckload of melee weapons. Useless. Where was that first aid kit...

"Painkillers," he piped up, shaking the pill bottle he'd dug out of the bag to get his companion's attention. "Catch." Bryan tossed the meds to her hoping that 1) Mari wouldn't take too long to check out and 2) Tori wouldn't get her hopes up. He headed back to the exit again, having thought of something important. He paused at the door, turning to Tori. "You take care of that, I'm gonna go check if whoever did this to her isn't still sneaking around out there." Bryan hefted the shotgun and turned off the safety. "Lockin' the door," he added as he stepped into the hallway and pulled the door shut behind him.

"This time stay in the damn room," he grumbled, heading out to the front entrance. He wondered how many other players were left. Maybe everyone was on the defensive; that would be a big hassle.

Taking the pain killers Bryan had handed her, Tori shuffled over to her friend. Mari was still alive --barely-- and there wasn't much Tori could do. Slowly pouring some water from her waterbottle into Mari's mouth, she began to hold up the back of her head, hoping that it would make it easier for it to go down. Placing her head back down, Tori then hobbled to where Bryan had all her weapons and began to look through them.

Holy crap! What did you do Mari?

Aquamarine eyes slowly opened as the blonde bombshell that had terrorized a good number of students on the island slowly returned to consciousness. Her dainty hand slowly moved to her forehead and she grumbled inaudibly with uncomfort at her position. She looked around warily, staring at a bright intense light shining above her. She had no idea where she was. Last she remembered, she was fighting with that kid.

She sat up slowly, the pain in her stomach nearly making her cry out in pain. She looked to her left to see some girl digging through her daypack. It took only a second for her to reach into the inside of her jacket and pull out the Tanto on instinct. She thought better of it though and left it in the pocket. She spoke slowly and softly to the other girl's back.

"Who the hell are you? Where the hell am I?"

Tori was happy to hear the sound of Mari's voice though confused as to why she didn't know who Tori was. Turning around so that Mari could see her face, she offered a big smile with sympathetic eyes.

"It's me, Tori."

Slowly moving towards the clearly confused girl, Tori offered more water and tried to get her to laybe back down.

"You passed out, Bryan and I brought you in here and he's doing a look around the building now. Don't worry, you'll be okay."

"Tori..?!" Mariavel was undoubtedly surprised to see the girl whom she had spent a day hiding out at the school with. She didn't really think she'd see her again. It felt like so long ago that she had felt the warmth of friendship for this girl... She still did, but...

Mariavel would still have to kill her eventually.

Tori said that Bryan was checking the perimeter. That gave her many an idea. She knew that Bryan was her biggest competition right now. No matter what, she'd have to kill him swiftly. He was too dangerous to be left alive. If her plan was to succeed, she'd have to kill him.

After all... He killed Seth.

Mariavel took the water from tori and took a few elongated sips. She refused to lay back down however. She still felt the stinging of the bullet wound in her stomach.

"Do you... have some gauze? I need to bandage this wound..." She lifted her shirt over the wound to show Tori the sickening hole.

"Tori... What did Bryn say he'd do if you two were the last two alive...?" She asked blatantly after wrapping the wound. "Did he tell you he'd let you go home?"

Taken back a bit by Maris' question Tori fell silent. Getting the gauze for her wound she tried not to think about it. The truth was her and Bryan never really said anything about it at all. They'd been together the whole time, I guess it never really crossed their minds... or did it?

No, Bryan wouldn't have kissed me like he did if he hadn't wanted us to make it. He's not like that.

"We, uh.. I don't know Mari... we haven't exactly had time to sit down and talk about that you know?"

Tori finished cleaning the wound with some swabs she found in the room and proceeded to wrap the damaged area tight. There wasn't much else she could go exept hope the pain would go away after a while. Looking at it, and remembering what she could from her mothers old nursing and lab tech books, the bullet hole didn't look like it'd kill her. Hinder her walking and running a bit probably but she knew that if Mari would rest, the three of them would be able to make it out the island together and go home.

"Why?"

Mariavel puleld her shirt back down once Tori was finished cleaning and wrapping her wound. Tori gave her the exact answer she had expected. Bryan never even brought it up. She watched Tori think for a moment before asking her why she asked the question. Mariavel laughed slightly.

"Well, for one thing, if he wanted you to survive, why would he put you in a room with one of the worst killers on the island?" Mariavel stood from the table and slowly paced around Tori.

"What? Did you think he really needed you for anything more than a meatshield? Where is he then? For all you know, he ran off to take out the rest of the competition, hoping for my murdurous streak to take you out." Sme smirked and placed her hands on Tori's shoulders.

"He want's to win.... that's why he went so far as to kill his best friend. You thought he'd send you home? Ir did you think everyone could escape together?" She stepped twoards her daypack slowly, reaching her hand inside and grasping the wooden handle of the pistol.

"You did, didn't you? Foolish... it's a game of survival Tori... only the fit survive. Don't you see? You're not fit." She raised the pistol at her back. She fired at Tori's shoulder.

"You're just a little fool.... but that's the best thing you can be in this world.... a beautiful little fool." Mariavel frowned. She fired again, aiming for Tori's heart, hoping to kill her in one shot.

Everything was happening so fast. The friend Tori thought she had was turning against her. Of course Bryan wouldn't leave her for dead... he had so many chances before, why would he just lea- Seth?!

"Damnit Mari!" Tori screamed as the first bullet just grazed the top of her right shoulder. "Bryan didn't kill Seth! Seth begged him to do it! I was right there!"

The words following the first shot stung worse than the bullet itself. Someone whom she cared for, now belittling her as well as trying to kill her. Tori stagged to her right a step which caused the second bullet Mari fired to strike her left arm hitting the bone and breaking it.

"Bryan!"

Tori wanted to run to the door, but she remembered it was locked. Although Bryan has locked it from the inside, she couldn't risk fiddling around with it trying to get it open. Instead she tried to run towards the window with tear filled eyes, trying to get the latch open so she could escape. A sense of fear and sheer anger overwhelmed her in her frustration of not being able to open the window.

Damnit, open! Fuck! Open!

"Mari, why are you doing this?! We're friends!"

Bryan wheeled around at the sound of gunshots. His search around the perimeter had yielded little more than a small dog scavenging for food near a dumpster behind the hospital. It had been a waste of time, sure, but only now was it really starting to feel like a mistake.

Tori called his name after the second shot rang out, but it made no difference seeing as Bryan was already sprinting around the side of the building towards the entrance. All he could do was haul ass and hope that Tori had put a bullet or two in Mariavel. Maybe she'd found something incriminating in her pack. Hell, maybe Mari'd made a lunge for her arsenal and Tori'd had no choice but to defend herself.

'Please God, please Jesus let that be it,' he thought as he flew down the hallway and clutched at the doorknob.

...Yeah, but it's locked. Remember?

"Fuck!!" he exclaimed in frustration, reluctantly aware that this was his own doing. He threw his shoulder against the door, but it was solid and wasn't about to open that easily. Again, and he twisted the knob back and forth frantically, but that did little to help. "Come on, you sonofabitch," he hissed through clenched teeth, slamming his palm against the door. He wasn't about to give up, though, and took a step back to frontkick the door just beside the knob. He threw quite a generous amount of weight into it, desperately hoping that since there wasn't a deadbolt or anything it would give.

'Should've fucking shot her,' he told himself as his heel struck the door and made short work of the latch through the frame.

Mariavel frowned when the bullet missed it's intended target. It hit Tori's arm instead. Mariavel swung her rifle over her shoulder once more and pointed it at the scurrying girl whom she had once called a friend. Tori would have to die in order for her plan to work. There was no choice; even if she didn't want to she still had to kill her. She wanted to make it as painless as possible, but it seemed she'd have to just shoot her to death. Bryan would more than likely be coming soon. She had to finish it now.

"Seth BEGGED to die?! You expect me to believe that? Seth would never BEG to die. You filthy liar! I shouldn't expect you to understand though. You're trapped in your foolish little world! Only one survives! Don't you get it?! There are no more friendships! Everyone is only out for themselves now! Give up and die! It's over!" She screamed. She fired shot after shot at Tori's form in front of the window. The bullets shattered the glass around her.

Suddenly the door was kicked open and off its hinges. Mariavel spun around and fired a reflexive shot at the doorway. Bryan was there. She grimaced. She bolted for her daypack and swung it on, pointing the pistol at Bryan.

The bullets came at Tori one after the other causing the window behind her to fall to pieces. The first shot missed, the second the same. It wasn't till the third shot that things starting getting dangerous, with the fourth shot hitting Tori in the stomach rendering her to the ground. At first she had just falling to her knees, though the pain from her still healing leg shot up her side causeing her to fall limp to the floor and curl into a ball.

The familliar feeling of warm blood slowly started to pool on the side she was laying on as the salty tears soaked her face.

"You're nothing but a fucking coward Mari..."

The door cracked against the wall to his right and Bryan raised the barrel of the SPAS-12, not knowing what to expect. He was well aware that his less-than-subtle entry could mean throwing himself straight into the line of fire, but what choice did he have really? It felt right knowing he could stake it anyway, for Tori.

And then suddenly the good, justifying feelings all went away at once and only the bad ones were left. Seeing the single person you've been giving everything to protect shot down in one horrible instant can do that to you. The flood of an adjacent outdoor light that poured through the remnants of the privacy window drowned out the dull flourescent luminance inside the room and silhoutted her as she fell. He had been just a second too late, and now everything was fucked and he knew there was nothing that could make it right.

The impulse to run to her hadn't even registered when there was the sudden rush of a high-velocity projectile speeding past his head and the sound of a 9mm slug hitting the door behind him. Bryan found himself short of breath as he swung the shotgun in Mari's direction. It was a miracle he was able to pull his eyes away from the awful image that had just been burned into his mind and react. He fired at her, but it was rushed; his mind was swimming, his muscles were aching...hell, it was lucky he didn't forget to pull the fucking trigger.

Mariavel cursed when the bullet she sent at bryan missed and lodged itself into the dorrframe behind him. She saw the look in his eyes as he turned to fire at her. Pure, unadulturated hate was in them. Yes... that's exactly what she wanted him to do. Hate her.... It made it so much easier to pretend to hate him.

The shell was way off and blew a rather large portion of the wall to her left out. She was singed slightly on her arm by the shot, but nothing more. She fired at him again and made a sprint for the newly shattered window. She jumped clear over the crumpled form of Tori and out the broken window, turning once out to let another barrage of bullets from the rifle shoot at Bryan.

She turned, and ran for it. She was still running when the announcements blared to life. She was one of the final five now. But soon that would be four. Tori would undoubtably die from those bullet wounds. It was inevitable.

"A coward, huh?" She looked up into the night sky. The stars were shining brightly. A strk contrast to the darkness that was the island.

"Mybe you're right... but what more can I do?" She sighed and wiped the loose salty tear from her eye before it could fall.

"I'm sorry... Tori..." She ran off agin, heading twoard the school. The final resting ground.
