In Situ

B020 - Start

The third floor is the children’s and maternity floor. Empty baby cribs fill one room, and there are several chairs with stirrups. Deflated “It’s a girl” balloons are the only point of color in a drab waiting room. Plastic toy soldiers and dolls cover the floor of the children’s rooms. The beds have sheets with cartoons on them. Drawings in crayon and marker are proudly displayed.

It was quiet for a while. That gave Joe a chance to breathe and think. He was still scared, but he didn't think anyone in this room was going to hurt him.

One room out of an entire island of potential killers. He didn't want to think that his classmates would do anything. He was sure they wouldn't under normal circumstances. ...But these weren't normal circumstances, and he wasn't stupid enough to think that their school was the exception in the 'eventually people start killing' rule. And if it came to that... well, he didn't know what he'd do. He was also afraid of what might happen to Jason and the other girl. Would they run? Fight? Would they end up dying if they fought? Was that better or worse than becoming killers themselves? If they got killed, at least they would die with clear consciences, but... he didn't want them or anyone else to die, anyway.

This was making his head hurt. He just stared gloomily at his little package of cookies. When he heard the girl exit the bathroom, he held them out again so she could grab one if she wanted. Not that it would help the vomiting, but who knew.

He opened his mouth to say something like, 'are you okay' or 'do you need some water' or to say something reassuring like... well, he didn't even know in that case. Instead what came out was:

"Whuh... what happens if... if someone ah... attacks? If they're... they're not scuh... scared away buh... by the gun?" He couldn't look up as he said it. He was afraid of the answer. No matter what it was.

Jessica had finally come out and Joe asked the grand question: what do we do if someone attacks?

Jason paused for a moment (or a while, he couldn't tell) and looked down at the gun. "Well, I guess I should load this thing then." He really didn't want to shoot somebody, even non-lethally, but it had to be done. A pacifist is cannon fodder in a situation like this, and Jason didn't fancy being the faceless guy who dies an unimportant death.

He sat down and began to load the gun. Once he finished, he walked over to a small table next to the door and placed his gun down. "This is where we'll keep our weapons for now." He announced. "This is so we cannot turn on each other and that all the weapons are in a secure place. Joe, Jessica. Weapons. Here."

He walked over and picked up his bag. "I guess the bags go there as well."

Jessica raised an eyebrow at Jason's statement before taking a cookie from Joe with a slight smile. If Jason wanted to put the sledgehammer on the table, that was his choice. He could go get it. She still wasn't feeling too great, and the sudden "put your weapons and bags here" plan didn't sit too well.

"My bag's fine with me," she responded, with a slight cough at the end. Maybe some more water would be good.

She bit into Joe's cookie. It was good, maybe having something to fill her stomach would be good. She hoped it didn't mess things up again, anyway.

"It's good," she told Joe, after another bite, while she waited for a response to how she wanted to keep her bag. She wasn't liking the bossiness so far, although the circumstances they were in certainly weren't improving her mood.

Joe smiled weakly, the closest to a thank you he could manage, when Jessica said the cookies were nice. But it turned into a frown again quickly. Piling up the weapons didn't seem to answer much at all. It seemed a confusing answer. Keeping the weapons, so we might use them, but piling them in the corner, so we can't use them without telling anyone... but that only resolved things for this room.

Still, he didn't really mind. It didn't make him any more defenceless than he already was, and he wasn't going to be hitting people with a dressage whip anyway. And at least someone was trying to take a lead that wasn't 'let us murder everyone.' So Joe put down the whip next to the gun. When it came to the bags, though, he glanced between Jason and Jessica. She seemed reluctant. If Jason was insistent on it, and she was insistent on not doing so, they might split up. That would leave someone walking about by themselves in the end, and that seemed a bad way to go about the island.

"I'm okay with... with putting my wheh... weapon there. But buh... buh... bags can't hurt. Neither of us have... have, um... long-ranged weh... wheh..." Joe struggled on the word weapons, and instead finished with, "things. So we duh... don't have bullets. Hers is... bathroom, I think?" Joe paused, and then added, "Looks too heavy for, um... sudden ambush."

Put down the weapons, but not the bags... that'd make both of them happy, wouldn't it? Then no-one would leave.

((Finn Grant continued from No Rest for the Wicked))

Finn's search for weapons and supplies wasn't going well. When he had entered the clubhouse there had already been three people there and one of the three had a flamethrower. He didn't want to mess with someone who had a monstrosity of a weapon like that so he decided to try elsewhere. Finn made the decision to try out the hospital; it hadn't been far from the golf course and it was most likely one of the most kitted out places on the island.

As Finn walked along the corridors, he peered into every room, keeping an eye out for a weapon. There was bound to be some sort of knife in one of the rooms or at the very least some extra medical supplies.

Whilst Finn walked around the vacant hospital, he couldn't help but think about the dozens of horror movies he'd watched that were based in some sort of abandoned facility. He was half expecting a crazed, mutated killer brandishing a chainsaw to appear from around the corner and start chasing him. The thought of it made Finn shudder, it really was creepy here.

Now on the third floor of the building, Finn began to quietly sing National Anthem, partly to calm his nerves and partly because it was stuck in his head. It was his favourite song by his favourite artist: Lana Del Rey. He had always wanted to see her live, but now it seemed that it was never going to happen.

    "Money is the anthem
    Of success
    So before we go out
    What's your address?

    I'm your National Anthem
    God, you're so handsome
    Take me to the Hamptons
    Bugatti Veyron

    He loves to romance them
    Reckless abandon
    Holdin' me for ransom
    Upper echel-"

Finn cut himself off as he began to hear the faint sound of voices. He bent down into a slight crouch and started to walk towards the direction he heard the voices. The voices got louder as he approached the source of it which appeared to be coming from one of the rooms.

Pressing his back up against the wall, Finn edged closer to the door of the room that the voices were coming from. He took one step closer to the door and could now see a small sliver of the room. From the small amount of the room that Finn could see, he was able to see the backs of two boy's heads. Finn was able to make out that there were three voices within the room, two boys and a girl, however, the girl was just out of sight.

Taking more notice of the small amount of the room he could see, Finn observed a small table next to the door with some sort of whip and a gun on it. Finn's face lit up with delight upon seeing gun and almost shouted with joy. However, this delight soon went away when he realised the dilemma that he couldn't actually get the gun without being seen.

Weighing up his options, Finn began to plan what he was going to do. He could just run in and grab the gun, but then there is always the possibility that they might notice him before he got the gun and attempt to shoot him. He could go in and pretend to be friendly and grab the gun when they're not looking, but that could just end up the same way as the last option. His best bet would be to just wait them out and grab the gun when they're far away from it.

Finn carefully put his bag down on the floor so that it wouldn't make a noise and slid it behind him. If he was going to do this he would need to be quick and the bag would only slow him down, he would go pick it up afterwards.

Okay, so Joe will keep his bag and Jessica will keep her everything. Fine with him.

Jason nodded towards the two. "Okay, so you guys can put away anything you want and keep anything you want. I'll put all my stuff on the table." He patted the rough wooden surface. "I'll be in the corner if you guys need me."

He then wandered off, inspecting the empty cribs. He thoughtfully began to rip out some of the beddings, to make for impromptu bandages or anything else they would need. Better start stocking up on looted supplies.

Once he had finished gathering beddings, he sat down next to the table, resting his head against the table leg.

Jessica was pleased that no one made a fuss about her decision not to put her bag on the table. After all, what was really the point of them putting their stuff together? As much as she liked kids, this wasn't kindergarten where everyone put their backpacks up on their hooks.

Joe brought up a good point about attack. Jessica wanted to believe no one in their school would attack anyone, but there were kids who got in fights without being in a life or death situation. No fights at all just weren't going to happen.

Jason loaded his gun. Jessica didn't much like that the bossiest one in the group was the one with the gun, but what was she supposed to do? Nothing, she supposed.

Things were going well for a moment, when her stomach started to churn again.

      "Blugh," she let out.

She rushed back to the bathroom. Maybe the cookie had been a bad idea.

Joe watched Jason start to tear apart the bedding and was about to open his mouth to say something about sterilizing them first, because shoving abandoned kid blankies on open wounds was like opening the doors and welcoming infection into the body, but the he started thinking about open wounds, and then he just really wanted to vomit.

Jessica beat him to it. Joe blinked and looked up a little as she retreated to the bathroom again. Was it the cookie? It was probably the cookie. He should have known better. Joe closed the bag of cookies and shoved them back in his bag, going bright red with embarrassment at making her throw up again, before spotting the first aid kit in his bag. He pulled it out before leaving the rest on the table.

"There muh... might be anti-nauh... nauh... nausea stuff in here. I'm guh... gonna help her. Okay?" he mumbled, before following her into the bathroom. He left the door slightly ajar, just in case.

"I'm... I'm suh... sorry. Cookies... not so good for th-that," he said to her, kneeling on the floor and opening the first-aid kit. There might be something in there. If not... perhaps there was some medication around that wasn't expired.

Finn listened closely to the group's conversation, his eyebrows creasing in concentration. From the sound of it, it seemed that one of the three was being sick and was followed by the sound of someone rushing out of the room. This was shortly followed by one of the boys announcing he was going to help them and also leaving the room. Finn slowly peered around the door and examined the room. One of the boys was sat next to the gun on the table with his back to him and the other two were missing from the room.

Pulling himself out of the room, Finn pressed himself up against the wall and smiled to himself. It appeared it was his lucky day. If he was going to get the gun, Finn would need to do it now before the other two came back. He quickly glanced into the room again to check on the boy who was still facing away from him. The gun was right above him, it would be risky trying to get it, but it would be his only chance of survival on this island.

He took in a deep breath and got into a low crouch before stepping into the room. Finn slowly crept towards the gun and the boy sat on the floor, his eyes darting between the two of them. As he came within a foot of the gun, Finn reached his hand out. One more step.

      Squeak.

Finn's heart stopped. He gazed down at his feet to see a squeaky toy bear under his right foot, one of many other toys that were scattered across the room. His eyes snapped back up to the boy who had now turned around and was looking right at him.

      Fuck!

Before the boy had a chance to say anything, Finn flung his leg back and hurled it forward with all his strength into the boy's face. In one swift move, Finn twisted his body around and dived towards the gun.

Jason took the short moment of silence to rest for a bit. He'd probably spend the next few nights sleepless, watching out for any nocturnal killers. He felt like a little kid at New Year's, trying to stay up until midnight but inevitably falling asleep on the couch or table at nine. Jason actually sort of felt like it was real, until he heard the squeak.

For a split second, he was face to face with a bewildered brunet boy, clearly thwarted in his attempts at theft. He vaguely connected the face to a name he heard associated with the boy. Something that started with an F. Frank, Felipe, Finn, Francis...he couldn't place it.

Maybe it was she short time of observance, as F-something immediately kicked Jason in the face. He yelped and fell back, clutching his face and groaning. Through his fingers, Jason saw the boy reach for the gun. Crap! Putting the weapons on the table wasn't a good idea!

Jason was indecisive at what to do. He was wounded by a kid soon to get a gun, and Joe & Jessica were in the bathroom. By the time they got back, Jason could be dead, and they'd be dead soon after.

The boy was fast, so Jason had to act fast. He was never really good at doing things impulsively, but he grabbed the boy's leg in an attempt to hinder him.

Jessica groaned as the bits of the cookie and additional bits of stomach acid hit the toilet bowl again.

The headache was coming back stronger too. The cookie had definitely been a bad idea, she knew that now.

She hoped the nausea would pass soon. It was a pretty obvious feeling, but she also felt like she'd go through a bottle of water an hour if she kept getting sick.

She hoped Joe found that medication soon, she felt like she needed it.

Joe winced as he heard splatters coming from the toilet and continued to search through his first aid kit.

"Uh... ummmm... I cuh... can't find anti-nausea stuh... stuff." Joe picked up the asprin and looked at it, then looked at the epipen and the iodine and all the bandages, frowning. "They... they didn't scuh... skimp on supplies, but I can't--"

He cut off when he heard scuffling noises come from outside. He looked up from his medkit.

"What's he doing? Juh... just a..." He climbed to his feet and pushed the bathroom door open. "Jason--"

        ...

It took a second to take in what was happening. New guy, Finn, reaching for the gun. Jason trying to stop him. The gun lying on the table, closer to Finn than to Jason.

A wave of the worst panic and horror Joe had ever felt, barring the mountain-biking incident with his aunt, surged through him. But with it came a huge surge of adrenaline. Because no-one was hurt yet. Jason was fine. And Joe could keep things that way if he took away what the fight was over. If he got the gun. If he kept the gun away from Finn and told him to go away because everything had been going fine until he came along. Well, not fine... but they'd been okay! And if he didn't get the gun, then Jason and Jessica would both die and it'd be his fault for not doing anything and not protesting that stupid 'put the weapons on the table' idea and--

Joe ran for the gun. He wasn't being dragged away from it like Finn was, so he managed to snatch it from Finn's reach.

Adrenaline still pumping, he stumbled a few steps back and turned towards the two, who were both still struggling with each other. He pointed the gun at Finn. The gun shook so badly that it was a miracle he hadn't dropped it.

He just wanted to scare Finn. He just wanted Finn to leave. But the adrenaline was going and all he could hear was his blood pumping in his ears.

He pulled the trigger without thinking.

        ...

        He missed Finn.

As Finn's hand got an inch away from the gun, he felt himself being lurched back. Something had grabbed hold of his leg and pulled him backwards, causing Finn to slip and collapse to the ground. Finn's face connected with the hard floor, triggering a searing pain to shoot along his jaw. Looking back, Finn saw the boy who was hauling him away from the gun and began kicking out at him, however, the boy continued dragging him away until he was practically on top of Finn. He flipped himself over and began thrashing beneath the boy, not caring where his fists and feet hit.

"Get off me!" Finn grunted in anger, yet the boy carried on pinning him down.

To his side, Finn saw the other boy re-enter the room and dash past him to grab the gun. Finn groaned loudly and stretched his hand out behind him in a last attempt to get a hold of the gun, but the second boy was too quick for him. The boy took a few steps back from the writhing pair and raised the gun. He was aiming at Finn. Finn froze and time seemed to stop with him. With widening eyes, he stared at the boy for what seemed like hours. Joe Carrasco would be his killer, out of all the people on the island it was going to be Joe Carrasco the jittering mess who ended his life.

An ear splitting crack echoed around the room and Finn felt the boy's weight vanish. With one large push, Finn shoved the boy off of him and sat bolt upright. He looked down to see blood staining his white and blue striped top just to the side of his stomach. He shot him. Joe fucking Carrasco had shot him. In a panic, Finn swiftly lifted up his top and stroked his abdomen, but to his surprise there was no wound.

Finn's eyebrows creased in confusion as he stared at his stomach which didn't have a single scratch on it. He thought hard about where the blood could be coming from and suddenly remembered the boy who had been on top of him only seconds ago. Finn looked to his side and saw a bleeding Jason Meyers beside him.

With a gasp, Finn scuttled several feet away from Jason and stared with a dumbfounded look at the bleeding boy.

Jason smirked in victory as the other boy fell smack on the ground. He turned around and glared, then immediately began to kick. Jason only gripped harder, and pulled himself on top of the boy's legs. He managed to get fully on top of him before the other boy flipped himself over and started thrashing around. Jason tried to pin him down, and eventually began to pound on his face too. He didn't expect to fight someone so soon, but he managed to get the upper hand until-

        BANG!

Jason immediately felt a searing pain somewhere on his abdomen. He gritted his teeth and let out a little yelp. He nearly collapsed on the other boy, but he was pushed away. Through half-closed eyes, he saw the other boy check himself for wounds. When he realized he was unhurt, he looked at Jason, stared wide-eyed for a second, and scooted away from him.

He glanced around the room, to see who had shot him. He saw the other boy a few feet away from him, and another figure was looking towards them, holding a gun. It was too tall to be Jessica, so it could be Joe.

Jason winced and glared at the other boy. Anger rose up in him. It was his fault that Jason was bleeding out! It was his fault that his friend had shot him.

It was his fault that he was going to die.

On an impulse, Jason lunged at him, or at least attempted to. He managed to flop down on the other boy. He began to thrash around angrily, and tried to punch him in the face.

Jessica groaned when she realized Joe had left. Maybe she'd have to find the darn medicine on her ow-oh.

The sound of the gunshot brought her out of her thoughts, although she still hoped inside that it was just a really loud firecracker.

She unsteadily got to her feet, knowing that she probably had to do something, even as more fluid spilled onto the ceramic tiles.

She unsteadily made her way to the doorway, trying to adjust to what she was seeing.
