In Situ

B020 - Start

The third floor is the children’s and maternity floor. Empty baby cribs fill one room, and there are several chairs with stirrups. Deflated “It’s a girl” balloons are the only point of color in a drab waiting room. Plastic toy soldiers and dolls cover the floor of the children’s rooms. The beds have sheets with cartoons on them. Drawings in crayon and marker are proudly displayed.

The energy and panic that had filled Joe drained out of him the moment he saw the blood. It was replaced by the overpowering gravity of what he'd just done.

He hadn't meant to do that. He hadn't even meant to pull the trigger. He'd just wanted to scare Finn off. He'd just... why had he done that? He... he...

Joe lowered the gun far too late before grabbing the table he'd snatched the gun from to steady himself. All the blood was making him very dizzy. For that moment, he forgot about Finn and Jessica. Even though the adrenaline buzz was fading, his blood was still pumping in his ears and he couldn't hear a damn thing. All he could see was Jason and a sea of red.

He had only felt close to this horrified, and anywhere near this helpless, once in his life. The last time he'd been mountain biking, when his aunt had crashed and broken her arm. It'd been open and bloody and Joe hadn't been able to help because when he got close he freaked out and got dizzy. All he could do was call emergency services and wait for them a safe distance away.

He couldn't even  do that now. No-one was coming to help. Joe couldn't fix a stomach wound. He could barely fix a paper cut. There was nothing he could do, nothing, nothing, nothing...

...One thing.

Jason was going to die. There wasn't anything Joe could do except... except stop him from hurting. Joe didn't want to. He didn't want to fire the gun again. He didn't want to kill anyone. He didn't want to be here. But he was. And he could stop Jason from spending a long time, perhaps several hours, in pain before finally bleeding out.

It was all he could do.

He took one shaky step forward. Two. Three. He didn't want to get closer, but he had to. He didn't want to miss, he didn't want to hurt anyone else. The smell of blood got stronger with each step. That coppery smell that meant nothing but pain and death. The world swayed alarmingly. He couldn't even stand after a few steps, he shook too much, so he collapsed on his knees and inched towards where Jason was still attempting to get at Finn, thrashing about like a dying fish.

He could barely see through all the tears and dizziness. He reached out and grabbed Jason's shoulder. Not with much force. Just to steady him. He wanted to apologize. He wanted to apologize a million times, even though it would never be enough. He wanted to say something that would make it all better. But when he opened his mouth, nothing came out except a raspy sob.

He raised the gun, the barrel inches from Jason's head, and pulled the trigger once more.

Finn was caught by surprise when the dying Jason suddenly leaped towards him. The force of the boy knocked Finn to the floor and he found himself lying underneath Jason once again, only this time he was the one being attacked.

At first Finn didn't know what to do but try to protect his face from Jason's flaying arms. He was stupefied at the fact that a person who was only minutes away from dying could all of a sudden produce enough energy to attack him. Finn managed to grab both of Jason's arms and hold them together, however, it didn't stop Jason's efforts of trying to assault him.

Out of the corner of his eye, Finn saw Joe walking towards them again, still carrying the gun. When Joe fell to his knees next to the pair, Finn was confused about what he was doing, but his intentions soon became clear when Joe lifted the gun up. He'd missed the first time and hit his friend and now was getting extra close to make sure he'd hit the right target. He was going to make sure Finn would pay.

With a wince, Fin attempted to shuffle away from Joe but was hindered by Jason's weight that was pressed down on top of him. He was trapped with no way to escape. Joe wouldn't miss this time.

However, Joe wasn't pointing the gun at Finn; it was raised several inches above his own head and was pointing directly at... Jason.

Closing his eyes tightly, Finn whipped his head away from Joe and not a second later he heard the gun fire.

Jason squirmed even as Finn held his arms down. He tried to hit him, but only managed to throw his arms around. Dammit. He was nearly dead, and he didn't have enough strength to attack the boy.

He began to tear up. He'd die in a futile attempt to maim the boy who indirectly killed Jason himself. All for nothing. He was probably the first one out of them to die.

But hey, look on the bright side. You'll suffer less than anybody else. First one to die is the first one out, even if it's to heaven instead of home.

The little quip made Jason smile a bit, making his emotions a bit hard to read from looking at his face. He thrashed harder. He was going to leave the game, and why not make the person who made you leave suffer for a bit.

Besides, he had a lot of ti-

Jessica let out a half scream, half cough after the second gunshot.

    "What the Hell Joe!?"

Joe had just shot Jason in the head, but she didn't have time to deal with that yet, as her stomach started acting up again, she turned around, hanging onto the doorframe to the bathroom and waited for it to pass.

Shooting someone in the head was messy. This was something that Joe had known already. But knowing that head trauma--bullets to the brain included--bled a lot and made a huge mess was one thing. Seeing a blurry, red explosion and getting splattered with the blood of someone he just shot in the head was a completely different experience.

Joe blinked a few times, which cleared his eyesight somewhat, but he immediately wished he hadn't because there was Jason, no longer moving, and he could see every little grisly detail of what was left of his head. Blood was everywhere. On his hands, on his clothes, coating the knees of his pants where he'd had to crawl to get close enough to shoot. And all he could think was 'it's everywhere' and he wanted to claw at his hands and scrap it all off but then it'd just be under his nails and he didn't know how to get rid of it all and... and he... he'd...

    He'd really killed someone.

He vaguely sensed movement from Finn and screaming from Jessica, but it was muffled and he felt detached from it. The gun fell out of his limp hands and clattered onto the floor. Joe didn't move. He couldn't even move to get away from the blood. He'd never be able to go far enough because it was all over him.

So he just sat. He just sat and stared at Jason, unable to look away. Unable to do anything.

Blood splattered across Finn's face and he simultaneously screamed- the sound of the screaming blended in with the ringing in his ears. He felt Jason go limp and flop onto his chest. Turning his head, Finn gradually opened his eyes and looked down his body to see Jason sprawled out on top of him. Blood and god knows what else dripped out of the gaping hole in Jason's head and created a small puddle on Finn's chest which was slowly running down to his neck. At the site of the bloody mess, Finn shrieked once again and pushed Jason's body onto the floor next to him.

He sprung up and kicked the body away from him. Finn's heart pounded and he began taking in small, rapid breaths of air. Tears started to fall down his cheeks and mixed with the drops of blood that covered his face, he looked like a blubbering mess. Slowly, Finn turned to Joe and stared at him through blurry eyes.

"You killed him. You FUCKING killed him! You murderer!" Finn sobbed.

Another sob escaped Finn's mouth as he looked back at Jason's body. He couldn't believe what had just happened; someone had been shot and killed right in front of him, and all over a gun. Finn whipped his head round towards Joe as he remembered the gun again. It was lying on the floor in front of Joe, he must have dropped it. His gaze was fixed on the gun for a few moments, it was so close to him. He wasn't going to go through all of this and not get what he came here for.

Finn's eyes darted up to Joe's face to see if he was watching and then back down to the gun. The gun was only a hands reach away from him but it was closer to Joe and Joe was dangerous, however, Finn wasn't changing his decision.

Finn lunged towards the gun and gripped it in his left hand before hastily scrambling to his feet. As he dashed towards the exit, Finn saw Jason's bag on the table where the gun had originally been. He would need it for the ammo for the gun which most likely didn't have many bullets left in it and a few extra supplies would be good.

Coming towards the door, Finn extended his arm and gripped hold of the bag's strap and pulled it towards him, flinging it over his shoulder. As he turned, he bent down and picked up his own bag which he had left there earlier and headed full speed down the corridor.

As Finn ran, he started to slow down; he couldn't handle the weight of both bags. When he turned the corner off the hallway Finn came to a halt and dropped to the floor. He snivelled loudly and rubbed his still teary eyes before opening both his and Jason's bags. Gripping hold of the base of Jason's bag, Finn lifted it up and tipped it upside down so the bag's contents scattered across the floor. Frantically, he began picking up all the bullets and the instruction manual and transitioned them to his own bag. When he had finally finished gathering up the bullets, Finn looked at the pile of supplies thoughtfully. He couldn't take all of the supplies as it would weigh him down, so he decided to take the first aid kit, a bottle of water, a tin of crackers, a loaf of bread and five of the ten energy bars.

Satisfied with his new load of supplies, Finn stood up and poked his head around the corner to make sure no one had followed him. With one last sniff, Finn turned and sprinted down the hallway, making his way out of the hospital.

Jessica closed her eyes and tried to breathe calmly. In through the nose, out through the mouth. She heard the yelling and the screaming, but she couldn't handle it right now. The bile was almost coming out again and there was a dead boy in the room and she couldn't handle this.

    She kept it down.

She turned her head once things had quieted down.

Joe barely realised Finn had taken the gun. All this had stemmed from Joe's attempt to stop Finn getting that gun, but when Finn snatched the gun away all Joe could think was 'murderer.' Murderer. Murderer. That's what Joe was now. He'd broken the biggest of the ten commandments and there would never be any way to fix it. He wanted to scratch at his skin where the blood had splattered him, scratch and claw until it was all gone. He wanted to scream and shout and do... something... anything... but nothing was coming to mind.

He looked up slightly when Finn took the weapon, as well as Jason's bag, and ran away. Finn had gotten the weapon, and he hadn't fired. He'd never intended to shoot. He'd wanted the gun, but he hadn't used it on any of them. ...It was all for nothing. Just one giant fuck-up.

Joe looked down at Jason again, tears streaming down his face, before turning around at the sound of Jessica's voice. He didn't say anything. He tried, but his mouth just flapped noiselessly. Too much to say, he'd need years that he didn't have.

Through the haze that was filling his brain, one clear thought managed to force its way through.

Get away from Jessica before you hurt her, too.

It was still irrational to think he could or would, but he was afraid. Not of her, or Finn, or anyone else on the island. He was just scared of what he'd do.

So all of a sudden, he jumped to his feet, grabbed his things from the table and ran away, clinging the bag to his chest like a little kid clinging to a soft toy. Still soaked in blood. He fled before he could have second thoughts. Before he hurt her, too.

Jessica didn't try to stop Joe when he ran.

Her stomach had calmed now. She could stand, walk around, and Joe was gone. She felt like she should be upset that he ran. Obviously there was something else going on with Finn there, Jason being dead couldn't have been all on Joe's hands, she didn't think anyway.

    She'd probably never know.

Jessica went back to the bathroom and grabbed her bag. Her stomach seemed to have been scared into behaving. She noticed Joe had left his first aid kit behind. She'd normally have some reservations about taking other people's things, but she didn't think Joe would be coming back for it. She put that in her bag, leaving her sledgehammer behind.

Things were bad, she wasn't too hopeful about her class getting any happy ending. But she had an extra first aid kit now, so maybe she could help something.

She avoided looking at Jason's corpse as she left.
