Appearance: Mr. Shigen wears his shoulder length black hair pulled up in a ponytail.  His dark, almond-shaped eyes are framed by horn-rimmed reading glasses.  He has a very slender body type which, combined with his height of 5'9", makes him appear very willowy. Dark colored slacks, black dress shoes, and long sleeved dress shirts in reserved colors are the backbone of Mr. Shigen's work wardrobe.  His one concession to casual dress is that he wears his sleeves rolled up to the elbow which make the black leather bracelet on his left wrist all the more noticeable.

Biography/Personality: Mr. Shigen's English classes tend towards two extremes: raucous discussions and debates or hushed, focused writing.  People who walk through the door are never sure which they will encounter.  While his room may appear to outsiders to be out-of-control, he rules his classroom with an iron will and strict structure.  Visitors often have trouble immediately locating Mr. Shigen due to his tendency to roam around while instructing.  

Mr. Shigen likes to engage his students by answering with a question which he believes encourages critical thinking.  His students are accustomed to his habit of folding his hands together, index fingers extended, and tapping his bottom lip while thinking.  Although he is known for being quiet and reserved, his students know that Mr. Shigen possesses a very dry, acerbic wit.
