Rushing It at the Last Moment

Could he do this?

Jason trembled, doing his best to conceal the pansies behind his back. The senior was dressed in a tuxedo with a bright red bow-tie, and his fedora now sported a red stripe. It was surprisingly easy to rent a suit, thanks to years of saving up. He never expected to use the money for this, and silently thanked himself for it. Saving things for later almost always benefited you, and Jason followed that philosophy by heart.

Sadly, he saved actually asking someone out for later as well.

It wasn't that Jason was unpopular, but he procrastinated and pushed off getting a date for Prom farther and farther each day. Before he knew it, Prom was going to start in about 6 hours, and he still had no date.

In a quick panic, Jason began to rattle off a list of girls he knew. Most of them had dates, and the ones who didn't were a little to creepy or didn't want to go to Prom. To help himself think, he had gone on a walk to help his creative process. Luckily, Jason found himself in front of an apartment complex he knew that Rosemary Michaels live in. She seemed like a nice girl, and was sort of awkward in a cute way, at least to Jason. He hopped into the family's 2004 Ford Focus and rented a tuxedo at a good place. He then bought some pansies (they looked pretty) form the flower shop, and quickly changed.

It was now 3 hours until Prom, and Jason was going to make his move. Running some quick lines in his head, he knocked on the door and hoped that Rosemary's parents didn't answer.

That would be awkward.

Rosemary sighed as she looked at herself in the bathroom mirror. Her mother had fussed over her this entire afternoon to make sure she looked "presentable" for prom. She wasn't ungrateful for it or anything, in fact she probably would've probably looked as good as she did any other day if it wasn't for Mom applying mascara to her eyeslashes and forcing her hair into some curlers.

The girl was wearing a  pale cream dress with accents of lavendar swaffed in. The fabric went down to just above her knees, showing off Rosemary's usually hidden legs. She was fair skinned, but the dress seemed to compliment it, and her now curled hair was pulled back into a half pony tail, a few stray strands tucked behind her ears so the wouldn't get into her face. She had pink lip gloss on that she had to stop herself from licking (it was perpermint). And brown eyeshadow applied on her eyelids to make her eyes 'pop'.

So what if I'm going alone. It's not like I expected anyone to ask me. She thought. Though it made her a little sad still. This was what most girls dreamed about since they were little.

She heard a knock from the hallway. "Coming!"

She walked barefoot out of the bathroom to answer the door, looking through the peep hole to see Jason Meyers at her door. The girl paused for a few moments, before undoing the deadbolt and opening the front door.

"Hello? I'm sorry, but I think you might have the wrong house..."

It never did occur to Jason that Rosemary might have a date already. His heart sank as Rosemary opened the door, in a dress. Fuck, if her date shows upright now, Jason expected to be beaten to a pulp. He prayed it wasn't someone like Adonis Alba.

"Err, no, I'm at the right house." Jason replied sheepishly. "Um, heeeey, do you have a date for Prom yet? I mean, It starts in 3 hours." He gave a shaky laugh, and looked into Rosemary's house just in case the date was here already. "If so, then is he here yet? If he is, I'm going to have to leave..."

Rosemary blinked at the question, quite confused. She knew Prom was in a few hours, that's why she was dressed- wait, wait. "You're asking me-?"

"If so, then is he here yet? If he is, I'm going to have to leave..."

"Wait," The girl touched Jason's wrist as he moved closer, her face turning a shade of pink. "I... I don't... have a date..."

Oh. That was a nice coincidence.

"Err, great. Look, I know I really haven't talked to you, like, ever, but it looks like we're both all dressed up with nowhere to go." God, he wasn't the smoothest guy when it came to sweet talking. Maybe the panic in the last 3 hours has befuddled his thinking process. Oh well.

"Sooo, let's go to Prom. With each, um, eachother. As friends, or something else..."

"Hyeeaaaah, let's just go as friends."

He handed the pansies over to Rosemary, grinning.

(god, my posts with Jason are crap.)

(It's just makes everything more awkward and funny. Which is good.)

Rosemary stared at the boy in front of her, still looking a bit confused, before looking down at the pansies. She reached out her hands to cup the bouquet. They look almost like little faces to me, and the petals feel very soft...

The girl looked up once more. Jason wasn't bad looking, and despite some scatterbrained moments he seemed like a good person.

"Alright. Just let me put these in a vase and get my shoes on." She replied, adding in a small shrug of her shoulders as she took the flowers and headed back inside. "You can sit down if you want to."

Her parents weren't home at the moment, so they did a couple of photos earlier. They said that she needed to take lots at the Prom so they would have more with Rosemary and her friends.

YES! YESYESYESYESYES YEEEEEESSSSSS!

Despite his seemingly calm demeanor, Jason was whooping with joy on the inside. He had finally got a date to Prom, and they were actually going. The only hint to the inexplicable happiness inside was a wry smile forming on his face.  He happily followed Rosemary into the apartment to wait for her to prepare.

Jason sat down on the sofa and looked around. It was a decent-sized apartment, and it was well decorated as well. There were a lot of photos, and that was awesome. He mentally checked whether he had brought his camera, and luckily, he had.

Soon the excitement was overflowing. He fist pumped and gave off a quiet "YES! WHOO!"as he mentally patted himself on the back. He was going to Prom, and with a nice girl, too.

Amazing.

Rosemary was taking deep breaths to calm down the red in her cheeks. She still couldn't believe that she had been asked! It was a bit sudden but Jason was a nice guy from what she could see, and the main thing about Prom was to have fun.

She quickly slipped into some black wedges and picked up a small clutch with some basic assentials such as her phone, keys, ticket, and extra cash if they planned to go out to dinner or something. After taking one last look in the mirror and giving herself in mental pep talk she walked back into the living room area where  her date (she was still a bit shocked at that) was waiting. The girl had a small smile on her face.

"Ready to go."

Ah, she was done. "Good. Let's get into the car." Jason said to Rosemary, walking out the door and into the parking lot. They got in, put their seat belts on, and rolled out onto the streets. Jason smiled as houses passed by and they got closer to the Prom.

It looked like tonight might not be so bad.

(Jason Meyers continued elsewhere)

Rosemary deposited the flowers in a water glass and locked the door to the apartment behind her. Her eyebrows raised a bit at the look of the car but didn't say anything about it, getting into the passengers' seat and looking out the window as they drove off.

Guess this night might be one to remember...
