Fruits of Thine Labor

Best Kill Award - Day 4

An endless shoreline spans the western portion of the island. The shore itself is quite desolate and is in desperate need of a bit of color on its pale white sands. Located on the western shore is a marina filled with boats and other water crafts. Shame they're all out of gas.

The ship pulled up alongside the first dock in the marina and a horde of henchmen jumped across the side to tie the boat down.  When everything was in its proper place and the ship had been secured, the soldiers formed a line down the walkway, awaiting the order from Sonia Nguyen to approach the prize winners.

Deep black eyes scanned the horizon, the soldiers, the boys, then returned to the bags at her feet.  The one on the left, colored black and indistinguishable from the outside, held within it a Colt Anaconda with the proper ammunition.  It was to go to Damien Carter-Madison.  The other one, perhaps the more lethal one, was to go to Huy Tran... an OTs-38 Silent Revolver.

If he really is a killer, that gun comes with a high advantage on it... they'll never hear him coming.

Her eyes pierced the Asian boy once again and she simply shook the thought from her head.  He was no killer.  He didn't look the part... didn't look the part at all.  The other boy, though... she couldn't help but imagine that he would probably turn his weapon on the Tran boy before the two ever evacuated the shore.

"Let's just get this over with..." she uttered aloud.

Her hands fell down to her sides to pick up the small packs lying at her feet and she exited the small ship.  Her heels made a clacking noise as she crossed over the wooden dock, down to the boarding ramp, and off into the sand.  The two soldiers stationed at the bottom of the ramp followed behind her silently as she approached the two boys.

"Boy number six... boy number thirty-six..." she addressed them with a slight grin as she came to a halt a few feet away from them, "It's a pleasure."

She raised the bags in her hands up slightly to indicate that she indeed had come with their rewards.

"I must commend you.  Surviving in this game for more than a few hours takes a lot.  You have to be strong... clever... manipulative... coniving, and most of all... absolutely ruthless.  The truth is, you aren't the type of students that we were expecting to see this far into the game.  For that, I must congratulate you."

She half meant it.  She hadn't expected some straggly little pre-pubescent children to show up to the docks.  She had expected some cold, ruthless delinquents who'd slit their own mother's throat for the right amount of money.

"So, as I'm sure you are aware, we have some business to attend to... namely, the issue of you're prizes.  As you can see, Mr. Danya has held up to his end of the bargain.  So... shall we get down to business?"

As Damien suspected, Charlie's girlfriend really was hotter up close and thus as proportionately deadly. Of course, that wasn't counting all the VC that escorted her. Obviously, Damien would have to be an idiot to try something in their presence. Right now though, he wasn't distracted by her body...more by her prize. He could tell that the jet-black bag with a small red number six on it was his, and that it had to have something appropriately ass-mauling in it.

Had his mind devolved just a bit more, he would have started salivating at it like a literal bitch. But it was then she started speaking, and his attention was returned to the lady. Damien could tell that she didn't want to be here right now, and that feeling was definitely mutual. Still, he smiled but didn't giggle. He also lowered his bat via his side, until the tip touched the floor in a very non-threatening position.

That she did not believe that Damien was some cold, ruthless delinquent who would slit his own mother's throat for the right price would have worked to Damien's emotional favor. Besides which, in his current state of mind he would have gladly slit his mother's throat just for the kicks. He also did not find it surprising that she only mentioned Nicole's lackey than the head honcha herself.

"Sure thing..." he replied, ever so politely.

Huy said nothing in response to the womans list of SOTF virtues. Her stature was anything but intimidating, but all the same her grin sent chills down his spine. In the pit of his stomach he felt wrong receiving this "prize" for murdering Sam Sorenson, but really, what choice did he have? The axe (which now hung limply at his side as a gesture of submission) wouldn't be an adequate weapon to get both him and Anna through the rest of this twisted game. On top of that, he still hadn't given up on everyone else...not entirely anyway, sorry Damien...so he'd need some muscle.

"Let's do it," he chimed in. His glance shifted from the bag with his student number to Sonia's eyes and back again. Huy hoped that maybe it was maybe something Anna could wield, because so far she hadn't been fit to use anything. Maybe if there hadn't been some fuck-up with his designated weapon...should he ask about it?

'Yeah, right.'

((I apologize for the ridiculous length of time this is taking.  Life's been crazy lately, hasn't given me much time for internet stuff.))

Sonia nodded curtly to the two boys standing in front of her and once again indicated the packs hanging from her shoulders.  There wasn't much to discuss about the prize drop itself.  There wasn't really much to discuss period.  She couldn't fathom why Danya even had someone of her calibur out doing such miniscule chores like giving away prizes.  Why didn't they just air drop the weaponry into the marina?  All they had to do was deactivate the collars when they hit the sands, just like they did now.

According to Danya, dropping the weapons in person made it all the more personal and presented them as all the more a threat.  Sonia just didn't believe that.

"This bag's for you, Boy number six," she stated as she held the black bag out to Damien.

"And Boy number thirty-six, this one belongs to you."

Huy was next to receive his prize.  She let out a light sigh as she once again looked at the two figures standing before her.  This was a waste of her time.  She shouldn't be out here babysitting.

"If you have any questions, now's the time to ask."

The odds of them actually asking her a question besides why they were in this game or how they got picked were probably slim to none.  This far into the game, most of them probably didn't care anymore anyway.  Everyone's thoughts seemed to have turned from why they were here to what they had to do to win by now.  Still, she figured she would oblige them.

Huy received the bag and clutched it tightly in one hand. He decided against opening the pack, in case it was interpreted as a threat and this woman or her entourage made quick work of both of them. It would be awkward anyway, having to shift the axe under his arm to unfasten the clasp and pull the drawstring. Better to save it for when this was over. From the womans tone of voice, Huy deduced that it would be shortly...

...except...

...he had to know, and this could be his only chance to ask. It was a question that had been running through his mind ever since the first SOTF, which he'd seen grotesque bits and pieces of on news reports (he could never bring himself to watch any more than that). Now, the question took a new shape. Standing here himself, a participant...no, a victim...of this twisted game, having killed someone in cold blood mere hours ago, witnessing Anna's gradual mental deterioration, standing beside this tittering psycho fucker and receiving a prize for "Best Kill of the Fucking Day"...Jesus, there had to be a fucking answer!

He glanced at Damien (who hadn't taken the opportunity yet to inquire) and then addressed the woman with a deep breath. "Why are you doing this...again?"

((Was out all Sunday. D: Back now.))

Damien put his bat down to lean on his leg and politely took the black bag that Charlie's girlfriend handed to him, like an A-student receiving his diploma. He paused a bit, considering the irony that he would have been in this sort of situation (per se) had Nicole not placed him in this crazy killing game...only he'd be trembling to the bone with fear of college. That and the bag seemed pre-tty heavy.

Of course, now that he was overcoming his fears...he felt a lot more secure in receiving his reward for all his...hard work.

While Huy Tran decided to inquire, Damien decided to check his own prize for himself, just in case Nicole had decided to surprise him with a remote explosive. He adjusted himself slightly so that neither Huy Tran nor his girlfriend could see around the bag's lid. His eyes widened and brightened as he looked inside, his smile extending greatly. Scratch what he thought about A-students and diplomas, now he felt like a child getting that shiny new XBox 360 with a full selection of games that he'd always wanted for Christmas...or a teenager opening a small box to find the keys to a Porsche.

This toy was, in fact, a disturbingly large 6"-barreled sixgun and two boxes of .44 Magnum ammunition. And they weren't blanks either, at least according to the sealed boxes' labels. Even better, sliding the cylinder out just a bit showed the gun was already loaded and ready for cocking! If he could handle the massive recoil and weight associated with guns as big as this, one good shot might as well mean instant death...though he would have to start moving after each shot because the mere noise could be heard a mile away. It only took a few seconds for him to memorize what was in it before he sealed it again and held it to his side in a non-threatening position.

"Thank you!" he replied as cheerfully as the aforementioned kid, before slinging it on his shoulder in front of (i.e. Elias') daypack. He made a mental note to transfer whatever supplies were left inside Elias' bag into the six-gun's bag itself. "Thank you so much!"

There was still the possibility that Nicole might have given Charlie something even more deadly and was going to set up a spaghetti-Western-style "draw" at the Marina...but Damien would be ready...at least he hoped so.

Honestly, military khaki and stencil doesn't look as good on me as black and red...

You couldn't tell by looking at her, but Sonia was somewhat surprised when Huy Tran got up the nerve to voice his question.  It was a question she'd expected to be asked, but she still found it amusing.  A faint smile appeared on her lips and she studied the boy for a moment before deciding to give him some form of an answer.

"Why are we doing this?" she reiterated, musing the question over, "I'd like to call it a form of... pest control."

She knew that the answer would probably leave Huy with nothing but more questions, but that was all she intended on answering.  She waved her hand in the air as if dismissing any other thoughts the boys may have wanted to voice.

"If that's all, I'll be taking my leave.  You have three minutes to evacuate the vicinity before your collars are reactivated and detonated.  Good luck, children.  You'll need it."

Sonia turned her back on the boys.  It wasn't as though she trusted them not to shoot her.  Someone with her training knew better.  Rather, she knew that they were high school students -- hardly trained in artillery and combat -- who probably couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if they tried.  Furthermore, she knew that if either boy seemed to pose any sort of a threat to her, he'd be gunned down by her companions before he ever got a shot off.

She headed back up toward the boat.  As always, she was quite eager to get off of this gigantic grave.

Pest control. What an analogy.

Damien watched as Charlie's girlfriend waved and started on her way back to the boat. His smile softened into something close to a straight face as he turned to face the other prize winner.

"So, I'll see you when I see you!" he chimed. He would have offered to shake Charlie's hand had both his hands not been full.

Damien started to walk...backwards. He didn't take his gaze off of Charlie or his departing girlfriend. Three minutes was plenty of time, but he was going to use every second of it to make sure that he was secure. His hand tightened around the grip of his baseball bat as he approached the rental shack where he hid out. The road out of the marina was shorter going his direction, and once he felt he was safely out of the proximity of the district, he could find someplace to hide and re-organize.

But as he looked behind him - to make sure that Charlie's other girlfriend hadn't conveniently appeared with a SPAS-12 - he noticed something mounted just above the rental shack door.

A camera.

Damien looked up and into the gaze of that little black device.

And he smiled and waved.

Nicole Carter-Madison had briefly gone back to the main monitoring room at her headquarters only to turn on the TV and see her son smiling at her, telling her silently that she was being saved for last if she didn't do something. She was left entirely speechless.

The same went for Reneé Valenti.

The waving was only for a few seconds, though. After that was done, Damien turned around and started brisk-walking out of the vicinity. In his still-sorta-recovering condition, he started hoping that Charlie wouldn't track him.

Huy's mind flooded with more questions as this woman's answer satisfied nothing. His stomach lurched. Was it just the overwhelming disgust he felt or was he becoming hungry? Come to think of it...

Then the woman casually dismissed them. Damien responded in his jovial tone.

Huy's attention turned back to his fellow "winner" and he found himself quite apprehensive about walking the length of the dock side by side with someone packing a hand cannon. It just didn't feel right. He let Damien get a head start, pausing as he withdrew from the boat and taking one last look at one of the faces behind the game.

He turned back around and his gaze immediately fell on the bag. It was fairly light, something small. He went about awkwardly shifting hands to open the daypack and found that he'd been issued a revolver just like Damien's. Actually scratch that, it looked a lot different. Not as elegant, or even intimidating. All cosmetic differences aside though, it was still a revolver. It was still a firearm. That was what he and Anna needed.

'I should hurry back,' it suddenly occurred to him. 'Anna might mistake him for me...' He picked up his pace and caught up in stride with the other boy, making sure that he could see the handgun but wouldn't interpret it as a challenge.

They reached the marina entrance. He couldn't see Anna at the moment; she was probably still hiding somewhere.

"Damien..." Huy looked the other boy in the eyes with a very serious demeanor. Once again he chose his words--and their tone--carefully. "...I don't want to fight you. Shit, I'm not even playing. I'm just trying to protect my friend. So...how about we just...go our seperate ways."

Damien's Louisville Slugger arm seemed to recoil from Huy Tran as he caught up to his side...when of course it was in a ready position for attacking someone in Charlie's position. He noticed the revolver, but was of all things in the dark about its make and model...and especially if that really was the weapon that Tran received. For all he knew, that weapon could have been holstered all the time he'd been at the dock. He also stopped so he could face Huy Tran when he replied, standing very close to the Marina's "borders" on the map.

The kid next to him seemed to pick his words very carefully, as if to give the illusion that he didn't want to fight. Damien already figured that Charlie was bullshitting out of his mouth like everyone else on this island apart from Daña. Still, he was pulling it off quite well, so Damien decided to let him have the benefit of the doubt.

"We~ll..." Damien replied, "I guess I could let you go...but I don't want to turn my back to have you stab-" and he looked at Tran's revolver, "I mean shoot me there too. Besides which, that lady might have a sniper around...and a battle might not last too long."

Damien waved his bat upward very casually before bringing it back down and showed Tran the shield (holding it in a defensive position in case he decided to draw on the spot). He didn't show Huy Tran that although his own prize bag was closed, it wasn't sealed. If Damien was feeling really determined he could drop the bat, draw the gun and fire. Of course, the weight of the gun and the awkwardness of the resulting swing and recoil would mean he probably couldn't hit the broad side of the rental shack, but it was the psychological effect that mattered.

"So let's head our separate ways...but I'd like to watch you walk away while I do so. I won't fire if you won't." Damien's voice reeked of childish innocence, and it was sincere in a way. It wasn't that he trusted Huy Tran, more that he was just making sure his exit would be more...secure.

((No, I'm not up for Anna ambushing him at this point in time. Actually...I had Damien already leaving at the last post...but then you posted and so I had to react. Thanks.))

Anna had been waiting on Huy for a while now. She was getting really worried. She was still in the position she was in when he left, hiding behind the rocks just outside the borders of the western shore. She was weaponless, and scared. She missed Huy. She NEEDED him. Suddenly she began to hear voices. One was Huy's. He was back! Thank god!

"Huy!" She yelled as she ran from behind the rocks, only to back away at the sighjt of the new boy.

"Wh-who's he?"

As usual, Huy had no idea whether Damien was sincere or just fucking around or what. So far he hadn't done anything that would put either of them in danger, so it appeared he was at least a very rational headcase. Hell, maybe it was just an act to intimidate him. Or maybe he was just a really jolly guy. Either way, Huy had no choice but to agree to his terms; they were fair, at least.

"Ok, deal--" He saw someone out of the corner of his eye and immediately turned his attention there. It was Anna, in a classic case of really bad timing. Huy felt his back go rigid as she called to him. His eyes shot from her to the now gun-wielding Carter-Madison. 'Oh shit, Dame, don't shoot!'

Then he thought, 'Wait. Shit. Is this thing loaded?' He hadn't given the boxes of ammunition inside the pack a second glance, but he figured that the gun had been loaded before-hand. Now he wasn't so sure. If Damien kept his word, then there was no need to worry. But still, the sudden lack of certainty was jarring and uncomfortable. Huy was sure not to give this sudden revelation away to the boy standing in front of him. He hadn't seen him load his gun either, and they wouldn't just pre-load one.

"Anna, stay back," he called to her, putting up the hand holding the revolver to motion her to stop and using as calm a raised voice as he could manage. "We're leaving." He turned back to Damien, keeping the revolver and axe at his side and taking a step back.

"...we cool?"

((Damien is NOT feeling determined enough to draw said gun. Hrrrrgh. But if you say so...))

Damien's hand had literally dropped the bat and lunged for the gun bag when he suddenly noticed Charlie's girlfriend had come out of nowhere. He too was shocked at her arrival, especially when he still considered her even more armed and dangerous than Huy Tran. By the time Charlie stopped himself and his friend, Damien had withdrawn as much as the butt of the gun out of the bag.

He grumbled inside as he realized he hadn't had quite enough time to cock the gun. Still, it was a lucky break that he wasn't turned into shredded Swiss cheese on sight.

As soon as he felt it was safe, he slowly drew the entire Colt Anaconda out of the bag, holding it tight with three fingers but careful not to pull the trigger with the index, and thumb on the hammer. This despite the fact that the gun was double-action, meaning he didn't have to cock it if he didn't want to. It would take quite a bit of strength just to prep that big gun, but apparently the mere sight of this kind of gun was intimidating enough without having to apply the effort. Damien wasn't exactly smiling, but he still looked fairly childish as Huy Tran asked him a question.

"Yes. I guess we are cool," he replied, before slowly...SLOWLY...kneeling down to pick up the bat with a couple free fingers on his shield hand. He didn't take his gaze or (relative) aim off of Huy Tran or his girlfriend as he picked it up and slowly (slower than the downward motion) returned to standing position.

"Now...if you excuse me," Damien added, putting that smile back on his face, "I have to take care of my own pest control problems."

He started to walk backwards, accelerating from a slow shuffle as he did. It seemed Charlie was doing the same thing, which was half-relieving for him.

Huy found himself unable to relax until they were quite a distance away from the other boy, but it wasn't because he didn't trust Damien. It was because Damien didn't trust him. In any case, it eventually became pointless to still keep his attention on the distant figure; he probably couldn't hit him to save his life anyway. The good news was that this one was over. Without incident. Hooray.

'No offense, bro, but I'd rather we don't run into you again. You understand.'
