To See With Thine Eyes

[CONTENT WARNING: SAM SORENSON, ATTEMPTED RAPE]

The southeastern part of the island is covered in a dense, dark forest. Somewhere within the forest, a tree fort once belonging to a young child has been erected within the trees. Don't let your guard down here, there's no telling who's hiding in the nearby bushes waiting to strike.

Anna from: Without you
Samuel and Lee-Ann from: Gentle times in not so gentle places

The fourth announcement rang out over the hustle and bustle of the island residents. Over sixty were now nothing but corpses on this island. Killed by their fellow students, and left to never be returned to their mourning families. It was coming down to the wire, and Darwin's law was about to be taken to it's most sadistic extreme. Who would come out alive? Would the person be a killing machine? Or would it be a pacifist who was able to live on? A Manipulator in the game's finest? Or even a Person who was so scared that the sacrificed everything they once held dear?

Soon, everything that Danya was planning would be set into the final phase, and everyone would complete their personal roles in the tragedy that was Survival of the fittest. Who would be able to survive with their sanity intact? That's right, none of them would. Lee-Ann Mari Collier, aka Girl #, knew this as a truth.

She was scared, that was obvious. She just couldn't handle things like this. She'd been traveling with one, Samuel Sorenson, aka boy #, for a few days now. Her in her overalls and him in her skirt, they looked like a pair of cross-dressers. It amused her a bit, but then again, she had little to be amused about. She couldn't handle pressured situations like this one. She was just a girl. What the hell did she ever do to deserve something this fucked up?!

Samuel and her sat in the forest of the island quietly, hoping upon hope that they'd be able to pass this horrible game by. She knew though, that they'd be found eventually, and they may have to fight. That thought made her banes rattle. Lee-Ann listened to the announcements quietly, praying softly for those whom were killed. She looked over at Samuel, who seemed deep in thought, almost as if he were contemplating the results.

"What's wrong?" She asked softly. Of course, besides the fact they were being forced to kill their classmates.

"Oh.... Nothing. But... Lee-Ann.... Do you want to be saved?" He asked her slowly. She thought about it for a while. What did he mean? Did he know a way out? If he did, that was great for her!

"Of course I do! Do you know a way?" She asked earnestly.

"Yes..." He stood up and walked over to her. She was leaned against a tree and he kneeled down in front of her. He stroked her cheek softly.

"My princess..." He said, just before quickly wrapping his fingers around her thin neck, just above the collar, and squeezed harshly, pushing her body against the tree.

Lee-Ann tried to get his hands off her, pulling with her own hands and hitting his arms, but it was useless. He was much stronger that she was. She tried to think, but the lack of air supply was too much. Suddenly she had a strange idea. She reached up to her collar and pulled on it. He seemed to realize what she was doing, but he couldn't stop her.

"Stop! I'm trying to save you!" He yelled as the collar reacted.

The blast took off a good portion f Lee-Ann's neck and she slumped against the ground of the forest. Samuel's hands were also caught in the blast, he screamed from the pain and fell to his backside. His hands were now nothing more than a bloody mess. He cried out in pain and betrayal.

"Why did you leave me?!"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anna had seen the whole scene from not too far off. She'd lost Huy for a while and had taken to looking for him. She'd ditched the raincoat after the storm ended, as it was too conspicuous. She looked in horror as the girl was forced to blow her own collar to escape the cross-dressing boy's assault. Anna moved forward a bit, slowly, as to not anger the boy.

"Why did you.... Why? Why play? Why?" She was too lost in her own zone of fear to realize how stupid she was being.

Samuel looked up at her and his eyes opened wide. It was her... She'd come to get him. It was the girl at the school. She'd come to kill him for what he did. She'd come for revenge. She was supposed to be dead... DEAD!

Samuel jumped to he feet and ran at Anna. Anna's eyes opened wide as he rammed into her. He fell on top of her and used his forearm to cut off her air supply. She attempted to push him off, but he was much stronger than her. He began to yell at her.

"You're supposed to be dead! Die, die, die! Go back! Go back!!"

Anna didn't want to die like this. Jaime... I'm so sorry. I was careless.

((continued from Without You))

Huy had assumed that he could keep track of Anna simply by her banana yellow raincoat as they trudged through the downpour. Maybe it was the lack of sleep that proved him so dead wrong. Either way, there was no sign of her now.

"Anna," he called into the trees, with an uncertainty that quieted his voice to that of one trying to catch the attention of someone a few feet in front of them. The forest was more than just a little intimidating; it felt like there were a million places for others to hide and none at all for him. He spotted a glint of bright yellow up ahead, but if it indeed was her then Huy would have had to wonder why she decided to just lie there on the ground. It wasn't, so he was spared the awkward inquiry, but this didn't make him feel any better.

Huy picked up Anna's raincoat from off the forest floor and eyed it over for a second, forsaking it the next and dropping it on the ground as he called out louder and clearer: "Anna!"

An audible crack echoed between the trees, startling him momentarily but providing a valuable clue as to where his friend might have been. If that was the case, she was definitely in trouble. Huy took a hastened moment to deliberate; they were heading in a straight line, she managed to get well ahead of him, here was her raincoat to mark her path, and there was a loud noise coming from precisely 12 o' clock. Huy sped in what could only be Anna's direction, hoping that just maybe the sound had been the pop of a very loud cap gun.

He arrived none too soon. Anna was under attack from some freak in a skirt. Huy didn't even acknowledge the mess of girl and blood against a nearby tree as he raced past it, focusing entirely on the cross-dressing scoundrel who was assaulting his only friend on the island.

"Get the fuck off her!" he belted at the digitless stranger, rearing back with the hefty felling axe and letting loose something of an underhand golf swing with the butt facing forward, towards the stomach of the bent-over assailant. Huy dearly hoped that this would incapacitate him adequately so he wouldn't have to use the other end of the weapon.

Anna was so scared. She felt woozy, and she could hardly keep her eyes open. He was cutting off her entire air supply. She wouldn't be able to last much longer. Why? Why was this boy playing? Why would you want to kill someone? Why?! She barely had time to think this though, as his forearm pressed harder against her neck. He grip on his arm began to loosen, and she couldn't even try to push him off anymore. He was going to kill her. Anna was going to die. That was it. Stay safe Huy. Please...

"Get the fuck off her!"

Samuel looked up at the sound of another voice and felt the impact of an axe to his stomach as a response. Samuel went spiraling off of the demoness and gripped his bleeding stomach with his charred hands in pain. His screaming resounded throughout the forest. Anna gripped her sore throat as soon as he come off her and took in some ragged breaths coughing a few times. She could barely breathe, but at least she was safe now. She looked up and started to tear up. She grabbed Huy by the shirt and pulled him down into a deep hug, softy crying into his shoulder.

Samuel was still withering in pain and couldn't even move. He couldn't think. He just wasted to kill the demoness. She was a devil. Only demons can come back from the dead! Why did that other demon come? He would have saved everyone!

Huy felt so relieved as Anna wrenched him down by the collar. He gripped the axe tightly in one hand, allowing himself to be pulled down to one knee and embraced. Huy didn't say anything. He watched the fallen assailant with clenched teeth, his heart pounding and his lungs quite short of breath.

"Are you ok?" he whispered to her, fairly certain from the looks of things that she'd sustained no serious damage. But this wasn't over yet. The boy in the skirt writhed in furious agony just a few feet away, and Huy tried to deter him from his re-doubling his efforts to destroy them both.

'Just stay down, motherfucker...'

"You! Stay back," he commanded, dissatisfied with the lack of authority and presence in his voice. "Just stay down, you hear me?"

'Stay down, stay back. Come on...'

Anna nodded her head slightly when Huy asked if she was okay. Her neck hurt a bit, but otherwise she was fine. The lunatic who attacked her was in pain, and looked even more insane than when he had attacked her. She stood along with Huy and moved behind him. She didn't want to admit it, but she was scared senseless. Hopefully it was over.

But it wasn't yet. Sam couldn't let a demon like her continue to manipulate people. He just couldn't! She should be dead! She cheated death! That woman should return to hell where she belongs! Samuel jumped to his feet, grabbing his stomach in pain when he did and ran at the two, ready to kill them. Ready to kill the demoness.

Huy cursed frantically under his breath and got to his feet as the attacker rose again, making a desperate beeline towards the two of them. He was horrifying in his relentlessness, running full-tilt at them with nothing more than the remains of his hands at his disposal. Despite the sweat slicking his hands, Huy clutched the handle of the axe tight in both hands, bringing it behind him to indicate what the other boys actions would merit. He was way too far gone now. There was no other way.

Huy, stop him.

Huy!

"Fine!" Huy yelled, given no other option by the incoherent freak in a skirt. He twisted his torso and tugged with a generous amount of effort, bringing the axe in a swift arc at the runner. If this was what he wanted, it was exactly what he would get. Either way, no one would touch her.

Samuel ran at them. The demons had to be stopped. Then he could protect his princess. Lee-Ann. He'd protect her. And he'd kill this seductress and her lackey. He'd kill them both. He ran blindly at them, his eyes twisted and evil. It was safe to Say that he had become the demon who he wanted to exterminate. Anna screamed for Huy to stop him. She wanted it all to end. And it would. The axe was swung up at the raving boy. It cleanly entered his chest and split his heart in two, killing him almost instantly.

Anna looked on in horror as the boy slumped to the ground, dead. She looked at Huy. He killed him. Her eyes widened in fear. This was the game. And now, they'd played it. They'd played it, and they could never escape that. She pulled her knees into her chest and buried her head in them. She just wanted it all to be over. Why did everything have to turn out this way? Why?

"Nothing will ever make sense Huy. Nothing."

Huy had shut his eyes just before the axe made its sickening impact in the other boys sternum, but the wet sound of penetrated flesh still crawled through his ears and burrowed into his mind. As the attacker fell he pulled the deeply-buried weapon with him. Huy allowed his grip to release.

Finally, he opened his eyes. He wasn't surprised by what he saw; the boy in the skirt had undergone an abrupt shift in momentum, and was lying on his back with the axe still firmly planted in his front. Huy felt bile rise in the back of his throat, and his eyes watered as he forced it back down.

Anna spoke. "You're right," he answered, his voice wavering. Taking a deep breath, Huy braced a foot against the dead boys stomach and wrenched the axe free. Blood ebbed out of the open wound.

"Jesus," he choked. Huy was a Bhuddist, but nobody ever actually said "Bhudda."

Anna looked up at Huy and then to the dead boy. Then she looked at the bloody axe. Then, the girl who detonated her own collar. Why was this all happening? Why did this have to happen. She just wanted to die already... to get out of this hellhole. To die!

"Huy... just kill me... finish me off. I can't take it anymore!" She buried her head in her knees again, sobbing loudly. Nothing would suit her more right now than death.

Just kill me!

Anna was losing the game. Maybe she was losing her mind. Huy fought back unexpected tears as she curled into a pitiful little ball and begged him to kill her.

"No Anna!" he said urgently to her, dropping the axe and throwing himself to his knees in front of her. He grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her furiously. "Stop it! Listen to me! Stop it!"

"NO! NO, No, No! Kill me! Let me die! Please Huy! I can't do it anymore! Oh God! Jaime! Help Me Jaime! Please!" She continued to bury her head in her knees sobbing loudly while Huy shook her and told her to listen. But she couldn't hear him anymore. No... Anna was done for in her mind's eye. She couldn't go on. She was going to die. She wished her sister was still here.

"Jaime..." She cried at almost a whisper.

Huy shook his head, shutting his eyes as tears now burned down his cheeks. Had he just been fighting a lost battle from the beginning? Maybe. Either way, it hurt so much now to see his friend in such anguish, and he hugged her tight as she let it out. He didn't know what to do. Maybe they could just kneel there until someone came along and finished the job. Maybe this was the mother of all nightmares.

"Please," he choked, embracing her as hard as he could. "Don't...leave me here alone..."

Anna couldn't even see Huy anymore. It seemed as if she was in a vast space. A place where she could become free from all her worries. A place where she could die in peace. She heard a noise behind her and turned sharply, out of Huy's embrace, standing and walking away from Huy. He saw her. Jaime. She was here for her.

"J-Jaime! Jamie... is it really you?"

"Yeah.... You need to be strong Anna. You need to survive for the both of us. I'm at peace here. Don't worry about me. Just don't leave mom alone, okay?"

"B-but... I want to be with you!" She ran up to Jaime and hugged her. Jaime stroked her sister's hair soothingly.

"Shh... I know. But I want you to live. You'll always have me, okay? Just survive."

"O-okay...." She whispered. Jaime disappeared and she was back in the forest. To Huy it must have seemed as if she was hugging air, but she knew. She fell to her knees and said in just above a whisper.

"I'm going to survive... right?" A tear rolled down her cheek.

Huy loosened his embrace and gripped her shoulders. He looked at her with cautious optimism, his mouth open just a little. Was this a second wind for Anna? Then he thought, what about when that runs out? He couldn't let that happen. He would have to protect her not only physically, but mentally. If at any time she gave up again, if it was any worse than that outburst, she was as good as dead. Just a simple wrench on one of those collars...he couldn't let that happen.

"I'm not going to let anything happen to you," he answered, looking her in the eyes. "I promise."

Danya's voice rang out again, and Huy felt his arms tense up as the obnoxious sonofabitch began rattling off deaths as usual, but this time Huy felt it so much harder as he waited to hear his own kill. However, he was thrown off by what he shouldn't have failed to expect; An Linh Tuan had been killed. Thrown through a window. Huy cringed and grit his teeth at the thought, shaking his head as if he was refusing to accept it. He'd known her since his Vietnamese lessons, and she'd gone to Franklyn with him. She was a martial artist, and he'd respected her as a fellow athlete, often joking that he'd have to watch his back around her. He'd always had a bit of a thing for her. Now all he had was a terrible feeling in the pit of his stomach.

It got much worse as Sam Sorenson (that was this dead boy's name) was announced. Danya mocked Huy for trying to protect Anna. Although it felt so wrong to be mentioned on the deathlist, he took just the slightest bit--a grain--of comfort knowing that at least if he ran into anyone else he knew who wasn't playing, they'd know that he wasn't either. He wasn't, of course. Right?

Wrong, said Sam. He was lying perfectly still save for his lips, which curled into a smile. Then the gaping wound in his chest followed suit. It opened and closed like a mouth: wrong. Of course this was Huy's imagination running away with itself, and after a couple of blinks Sam's body was entirely inanimate again.

'Christ...'

But wait. There was more. Huy felt a cold chill run down his spine as his name was mentioned again. For Danya's best kill award. He felt terrible for what he'd done, and worse still that he actually wanted to go to the marina and collect a helpful item. Then again, how much of a fucking idiot would he have to be to turn it down? He'd just promised Anna that he would protect her, and he was going to keep that promise no matter what.

"I..." he finally spoke up after the dangerzones had come and gone (nowhere near them). "...I think we should go take up Danya's offer." He paused, and reluctantly added, "We really can't afford not to."

Anna felt Huy grab her shoulders and realized that it wasn't over yet. They still had a chance. They could both live. They could survive. She turned her head to say something when the announcements came on. Fifteen more people died... Why do people kill, why? People from her school died too. It made her want to cry, but she had to be strong. She just had to.

"Yeah.... We should go and get it.... I'm scared Huy... But I won't give up... No way." She turned to him with a smile, and grabbed his wrist, pulling him off in the direction of the marina.
