Horrors From Beyond

Children are the devil.

Essentially, the first level of the Promenade could be described as the 'tween' floor. Any time after 3 PM on a school day, it's all but infested with young kids and not-quite-teenagers. Prominent stores on this floor are places like Banana Republic, Claire's, Hot Topic, and Please Mum.

((Aileen Borden continued from Ice Cream, Kit Kats, and Whales))

As the elevator went down, Aileen kind of shuffled her feet on the spot. Now she was feeling a little... crowded, even though there weren't many people in it. Seriously, she felt like a can full of sardines, if she wanted to go by the cliché. Though, there were probably more crowded things than a can full of sardines, but she didn't want to think about that now. After all, if she started comparing the elevator to more crowded things, it will only make it seem more so, and she would... probably freak out, actually.

Well, she honestly felt like she was being dragged along for the ride, so to speak. But, was it she who was doing most of the dragging? Who really knew the answer to that question? There was probably someone out there who knew, but there weren't here right now, at least, so she thought.

Ah well. Might as well not ponder that, either! Damn, so many things she had told herself not to ponder in recent history. Perhaps it was in her nature to look too much into things, but sometimes it wasn't necessary. Because, things were so simple sometimes, and they shouldn't be looked into. Or else people will have their heads start hurting within minutes. And, well, didn't want that, right? It would be... unfortunate.

And so, the elevator door opened to reveal what was expected, which would be children. Not as much as Aileen expected, but still a fair amount to cause slight concern. Ah well. Remember, they are still children.

As she stepped out, straight across her Aileen could see that one store, Hot Topic. She honestly wanted to stick her tongue out at it like some sort of small child, but... that was definitely too immature for any 18 year old girl that Aileen knew, including herself. So, she decided she shouldn't do it, and so didn't.

Aileen's eyes peered out from her glasses, trying to find out where exactly was the destination.

"Let's see... we are on Level one. So, I believe the dress store should be here... right?" she mumbled, partially to herself, while folding her arms.

(Melissa Li continued from Ice Cream, Kit Kats, and Whales)

'This is really cheesy music.' Melissa thought to herself as the elevator slowly made its way from the food court down to the first floor. It was remarkable how much time seemed to pass while in an elevator. All those shooting games had that "elevator" scene where you would always get attacked by zombies or aliens on a slow-moving elevator, but even games set in supposedly high-tech universes had elevators that couldn't even beat snails in a footrace. Maybe elevators would be like airplane seats. Always the same while everything progressed. It was kind of a saddening thought, really.

Before she knew it, her musings on the workings of elevators had taken enough time to get her to the first floor, where she stepped out into the tween level. It didn't seem too bad, although there was a lot more noise than she was really used to. Easily manageable, especially for a pair of high school girls like themselves. At least, that's what she hoped.

She turned her head at Aileen's voice, the other girl vaguely looking towards the direction of the formalwear shop. "Oh..yeah, I think so. Come on, let's go. Hopefully they'll have what we need, right?"

Aileen nodded at Melissa's comment. "Right."

At which point she noticed something. Only a few feet away from the Hot Topic, was where exactly they had been looking for this entire time. It was literally almost in front of her face, and she did not notice. And just now... she did.

The formal wear store.

The one on the map. The one that Aileen had spent hours looking for. That one.

Aileen almost put her hand to her face again, for a similar reason as last time. How did she miss it when it was almost in front of her?! After all, if she kept missing things... then maybe she wasn't... oh forget it. It's no big deal. Besides, her glasses seemed fine. Her ability to process information, on the other hand... it seemed a little off in recent history. She didn't know why this was, either it was because she accidentally changed her diet in some way, if the stress of all the end-of-senior-year activities were finally getting to her head, or if it was something else altogether. All she knew is, she seemed to be rather... unobservant lately. Meh. What was with her today? If they had an answer, could they please tell her?

But, she was happy she found it. After all, she spent how long looking for it? She didn't know the answer to that question, as well. And even though she didn't really smile, her face, in a way, showed that she was relieved that it was finally found. It was subtle, and although Aileen herself didn't realize it, it was there.

"Well. It seems to be over there", Aileen commented, pointing to the store in question. "Let's head towards it, yes?"

And so, she stepped towards it, as if finally seeing a pile of treasure that she had been searching for all her life.

'That was fast.' Melissa thought to herself when Aileen pointed out the store in question, nestled in a comforting corner nearby the Hot Topic. The ease of how they had found this little gem in the center of a foreboding tween desert was surprising, especially considering the fact that Aileen had already been searching a lot longer than she had. Maybe it was a sign of some sort, rewarding them for their efforts. Or maybe it was just a huge coincidence and somehow the store had been overlooked the previous times. Melissa was inclined to believe the latter. Either way, the search was over and the both of them could hopefully get their prom dresses.

Aileen seemed relieved and, to be honest, so was she. She didn't want to spend time walking around the whole first floor looking for a single store and to have it plopped down right in front of her really was some sort of blessing. A stroke of good luck. She rarely had those coming to her and she decided to take full advantage of it, walking next to Aileen and skillfully sliding through the mall crowds.

The formal store in question was mournfully quiet, with only one or two other customers. A bored-looking woman was manning the register while a smartly-dressed man was busy walking the floor, absentmindedly brushing lint off of an extremely expensive suit. Melissa couldn't help but feel daunted when she walked inside, having no prior experience to draw upon. Every other time she went shopping she was with her parents and striking it out alone, especially in a store like this, didn't seem so smart. Still...it was a store like any others, right? She might as well find a dress she liked and could wear and buy it. That was what the whole point of coming here was, right?

Aileen walked along, entering the store.

Okay, now what? After all, if she were apparently enough of an idiot to not notice the store the last few times, would she be able to find a prom dress? Aileen wasn't sure if she could. But, it was worth trying. Try, try, try. It always worked if you did. But, now she was sounding obsessed. But, sometimes it was... worth it to be a little determined. Anyways, she went all this way, even if it took her a long time. No use giving up now, just find what you want, buy, and leave happy. Simple, just don't stress over it, just don't act like you are about to die, and just... act normal. Yeah, normal.

As she entered, there was some bored looking woman at the counter, who looked like she hated her job. Then again, who didn't? Most people did. But, here she looked like she had her brains removed. And the guy picking lint off a suit... damn, was this the St. Paul Cuckoos or something, only grown-up? Wait, no, if she wanted to use that comparison, that would be the children outside, if anything here could be compared to that.

Ah well. Might as well find what she needed.

Aileen quietly walked over to the nearest display, and started looking at the outfits on selection. The little black dress? She wasn't sure if she would look good in it. The frilly red dress? Looked pricey, even compared to any normal formal dress. The red, white, and blue one? Looked like an American flag threw up all over it, to use a cliche. How something could throw up on another even if it didn't have a mouth, no one knew, but anyways. How about that light green one? Eh...

Aileen looked around, her green eyes staring at what was available, and could be seen. Well, she liked purple. She might as well... look for purple, she guessed. That was a start. Maybe something a little cute, but not overly fancy, as well. So, something fairly simple, fairly cheap as far as formal wear goes, and something that... well, looked good. Would there be something that fit her requirements? Perhaps. Who knew?

"Hmmm... no", she mumbled to herself again, this time glancing at a dark purple dress with plenty of strange designs. That one looked gaudy, actually! Who would wear that... no one knew. She felt herself make a look of disgust at the thought. Then again, someone might look good in it. But... honestly. Honestly. The heck? She usually didn't give that much thought about what others wore, but really. Ah well. That one was out, definitely. Then again, Aileen probably wasn't the most fashionable person out there, so should she be the one talking?

Quickly looking away from... that abomination, she continued on her quest. Hopefully Melissa was doing better. Was she? Aileen found herself glancing in her direction, seeing if she was doing any better. Why... she honestly didn't know. Perhaps she subconsciously wanted her to find what she wanted, too. What else could it be?

(OOC: ...Man, it has been a long time. I'm reeeaaaally sorry about the delay >_> I got facesmacked by the biggest wall of writing apathy ever. I think I'm back though. For real. ...I hope :V)

Now that she was actually here, Melissa wasn't even sure what to buy. She had never been to a formal event before besides piano recitals and her grandmother's 80th birthday, but that had been a long time ago and those dresses were too small for her now anyway. She wouldn't have wanted to wear the frilly things her mom liked to dress her in anyway...made her look too much like one of those porcelain dolls. A fitting picture, but one that she wasn't all too fond of. But what to buy...that was the real question here.

Definitely something in her favorite color. She was very partial to a dark blue, the color of the evening sky. She just liked it. She found a couple of dresses that looked good, at least from a color point of view. As for style...well, she really had no clue what was the 'in' thing. Then again, should she really care? If she wasn't going to bother spending every waking moment trying to find out the new styles and fashions, then why should she care about how a dress looked beyond whether or not she liked it? Well the obvious answer was that in some part of her, she wanted to be considered beautiful and trendy, to be popular with everyone in school. To be noticed...recognized, more like. Not in the way her parents looked at her, as a person who would continue the Li tradition of academic excellence, but more as...She stopped the train of thought right there.

'Why do my thoughts keep drifting back to them? Sigh...I wonder if Aileen is having any more luck.' She took a quick glance back at the other girl, seeing her busy looking through a series of purple dresses. 'Well at least she seems to have an idea of what she wants.'

She turned her attention back to her own business, pulling out a long velvety-blue number and holding it over her body. It looked good...kind of? Not too ornate...rather boring in a way, actually. It definitely didn't look like it would stand-out, which is the way she liked it. Some part of her might want to experience the glory of the limelight, but the rest of her could easily beat it into submission and for the moment, she much preferred to just go in and enjoy herself without being gawked at. She wouldn't earn any looks for it, but as long as it fit and looked good...

She placed it back on the rack, reminding herself to go back to it if she didn't find any others she liked even more. There was plenty of time.

Melissa seemed as if she had found something she had liked, but had decided that it was better to continue looking. What a shame, too. Aileen didn't know much about how to make clothes look good on people, but the one she picked out... might have looked good on her. It wouldn't have looked too bad, at the very least. Ah well. It's her choice, right? It wasn't as if Aileen was dictator over people's fashion choices, always preaching through propaganda about how not to wear white after Labor Day or something, after all. But, that was a strange analogy, she had to admit. In any case, she hoped something would look good on each of them.

And so, Aileen turned back to what she was doing. Well, she had a start, right? Go for purple, because purple was... something. Actually, it was just her favorite color, nothing special. But, it might mean something, seeing as... well, a lot of colors had "symbolism" that people attached to them. Some were obvious, like red for violence and anger, or blue for sadness. Maybe could do a bit of research on that? Perhaps.

Aileen continued to look, her thoughts starting to wonder. Perhaps she was... spacing out? She seemed to be doing that a lot today. No... not today. Recently, in general. Let's face it, she was... kind of a moron lately.

As she flipped through the different dresses on the rack, she kept scanning what she had seen. Hmmm... too small... too large... too boring... and that one was too gaudy. God, she was being picky today, as well. Couldn't she just find something, go check out, and be happy? But, on the other hand, perhaps being picky was a good thing. After all, she didn't want some random dress off the shelf, and not care how it looks, right? So, guess it was still time to keep looking.

At that moment, she found a nice, dark purple dress, with no sleeves, but it looked... kind of charming. Around the collar, it had a design on it, made of beads. It looked... cute? Was that the right word to describe it? Aileen guessed so. Was this it, then? Was this the one she would be wearing? Well, first she needed to try it on, and then check the price, so, you know, it wouldn't turn out to be not the right size, or much more pricier than she expected.

But, Aileen did in fact find something she liked. And that was something.

"Aha."

(OOC: This is going to be rather short...)

"Aha."

Melissa turned at the noise that cut through the silent shop, that blue dress from before back in her hands. She had given up on finding any others she liked as much as the one she held in her hands. And it appeared that Aileen had something too. She offered the other girl a slight smile, holding her own dress behind her back. "Did you find something? It looks good."

She drew the dress in front of her, seeing how it would fit on her body. "What about mine? I...kind of like it, but I'm not sure how well it'll fit. It...doesn't look too bad, does it?"

And so, as if on cue, like those guys who pop up behind you with a gun just immediately after you solve the mystery...

Melissa was right near her, asking if she had found something. Aileen gave a small little nod, and noticed that she was holding something behind her back, for... some reason. Seriously, what was it? Why was she holding things behind her back-

Oh. It was the blue dress from before. She was really set on it, huh? And now she was asking about it...

Well! As Aileen was thinking before, it would look good on her. But, there was only one way to find out, and that was to try it on. She took a moment to scan the store again, for any changing booths, and after a few seconds, saw the trademark cubicles and curtains, tucked discreetly into one of the back corners.

"It... looks good. I think the changing rooms are towards the back, if you want to..." Aileen's voice trailed off, as if her thoughts had started to wonder again.

Heck, she might want to try on her own, as well. See if there is anything odd regarding it and her body, you know? After all, her body... could be weird sometimes. And if it turns out that the dresses didn't fit? Why, they probably could find something identical. Though, it might require a stroke of luck. But, luck was a funny thing, to be honest. Sometimes it did good, sometimes it did bad. But, something like that would hopefully not happen.

Eh. Best to just wait and see, then? That was the best idea.

'Oh good. She thinks it looks good. That's the best sort of encouragement I can receive right now.' Melissa thought wryly to herself. She wasn't exactly sure what kind of reply she had been expecting from the other girl. After all, it had been kind of obvious that the two of them were not particularly fashion inclined so to expect some huge rousing display of "Oh you so don't look good in that, sister." was foolish, to say the least. Aileen didn't seem like the type of person to go "That is soooooo you." too. Did anybody even say that anymore? 'Where did that line come from anyway? Probably saw it in a TV show...'

She followed Aileen's gaze when she mentioned the dressing rooms and let out a soft "Ah..." when she found what Aileen was talking about. She looked back down at her dress, twisting the handle in her hand to let the edges flow through the air. "No time like the present..."

Without another word, she entered the dressing stall and slid the curtain behind her. She took a deep breath as she saw herself in the mirror, her mouth curved in a small frown. She had said there was no time like the present...but why was she hesitating so much about trying on a stupid prom dress? She didn't know and it was getting annoying simply dwelling on the subject so she tossed caution and thought to the wind and just tried the damn thing on.

'...Oh hey, that looks really nice...'

After seeing to it that Melissa went into one of the little cubicles and closed the curtain behind her, Aileen went into a dressing room of her own, quickly swiping the curtain to cover the entrance.

Now, she thought, let's just hope this fits.

And so, several minutes later, Aileen was now wearing the dress, and posing in front of the mirror. Didn't look too bad on her, actually. And it seemed to fit just fine. Now the only problem was... was it within her budget? Eh, hopefully she had enough.

After a few more minutes, Aileen put herself back into her street clothes, and headed out of the dressing room, dress in hand. Did Melissa want to see what it looked like on her? Possibly. But, for now, Aileen was going to wait for her to be finished.

Leaning her back against the wall and looking down, Aileen was lost in her thoughts again. So, she almost had the dress... what else was needed for prom? Let's see... date? Eh, not like someone would ask her out. That would take care of a huge amount of other things, as well. Any after-prom plans? Well, Aileen would see what would come up. Pre-prom? Same.

Ah well. She was probably going to have fun, to some extent.

With her choice of prom dress not only fitting but actually making Melissa feel like prettying herself up for the oh so special night, the Chinese girl felt that her job was done and the only thing left was to coast her way towards graduation. Four hard years of school to quickly be continued by another four hard years of college and probably another five years of graduate school. It was a depressing thought, but one Melissa was eager to dismiss as she changed back into her normal clothes and stepped out of the booth.

She spotted Aileen leaning against a wall and walked up to her, offering a small smile as a greeting. "So did yours fit?"

And so, she waited.

It seemed like years to Aileen. Okay, it was only a few minor minutes. But, for some reason she felt it lasted way longer than it should have. Maybe she was ridiculously impatient today, too. Ah well. It would seem shopping for dresses can be stressful.

Heck, lots of things were stressful these days, whether she liked it or not. Aside from the usual school stuff, there was the trip and graduation to take care of, too. But, she was sure she had that under control, as well. Now the thing to take care of was-

Oh look, Melissa's back.

Now Aileen was being asked whether the dress fit or not. Well, it did. And it looked good on her, too. So, that would be her answer, correct? Of course it would be. It would be... ridiculous to say something else, after all. Lifting her head up and glancing at Melissa, Aileen gave her reply.

"Yes. Looks decent, as well. Any similar success?"

Aileen just needed to figure out the price for the dang thing. Once again, hopefully it was cheap enough. She might also need to do other things with her appearance, as well, but she could ask her mom for input once she got home. She was sure it wouldn't need too much, as already it looked good. And so, she went to see if the dress had a price tag anywhere.

"Yeah, I think I found the one." Melissa said with a smile, hugging the dress to her. "It took a lot of time and looking, but I think we've finally got what we came here for, right?"

She quickly headed over to the counter, giving the cashier something to do for once as she dug in her pockets for her wallet. It was an old hand-me-down from her father, but it contained everything important and hadn't broken yet. Her license, her school ID, some old family photos, and of course the ever important cash. She looked up at the cashier as she rung up her dress, frowning a bit at what the cost turned out to be with tax.

'Good thing I have enough...' Melissa thought to herself, digging out the bills and handing it to the woman. She grabbed her change and the boxed dress, moving out of the way for Aileen to pay for her own dress. 'Phew...I'm tired out. I didn't think that going shopping for a single dress would wear me out so bad but...wow.'

Aileen stared at the price tag, and frowned slightly. A little expensive, but honestly, she was expecting it to be far, far much worse. Well, she had thought to bring enough, at the least. After all, she was expecting it to be fairly pricey. But still!

Ah well. She probably had enough, and Mom knew she was going out to buy it. Let's just hope that it wasn't too big a chunk of money for them, though.

Nodding towards Melissa, she agreed. Well, they got what they came for, so no more need to hang around.

And so, Aileen went to the checkout counter with Melissa, and waited for her to finish her purchase. As she pulled out a set of bills, Aileen couldn't help but notice that the cashier was now putting the dress in a box. A box? Well, that was classy. And she meant that sincerely this time.

So now it was time for Aileen to make her payments. Taking a couple of bills out of her bag, she placed them on the counter, and waited for the cashier to ring it up.

Soon enough, her own dress was in a box, and it was time to go. Aileen headed towards the exit with her purchase, but stopped to turn to Melissa. After a brief pause, she spoke again.

"Er... hey, thanks."
