Bounce cocked an eyebrow.

Is he mocking me?

Aaron was never that verbose, and Bounce wasn't sure if he was deliberately making fun of her, or just trying to pander to her by speaking on 'her level'. Bounce was fully aware that her English was very precise, but it wasn't something she did to try and make herself sound more intelligent. Fact was, even though she'd learned it fairly young, English wasn't her first language, and definitely not that of her parents. Both of them had taken painstaking steps to ensure Bounce spoke exactly correctly, and well, that'd kept with her for a long time.

Bounce decided to let it slide. So far as she was aware, Aaron wouldn't be that obvious about an insult, so he probably was just trying to match her kind of speech. Irritating, but not worth snapping at him about.

"Fine. I will bring it up with Alice the next time I see her. It shouldn't be too hard to get hold of Steven either. Next week, we can talk about it."

The Russian girl found it difficult to see what Aaron had said as anything other than a delaying tactic. However, well, if he thought she was just going to forget... not a chance. Not after what he'd done to the group.

"See you at school, I suppose," Bounce concluded, pushing away from the table and gathering up her paperwork. As she headed on out, she began to wonder whether she should do some more work on the SOTF wiki. She'd spotted some factual inconsistencies there and it had been really irritating her...

Will chimed in, saying that he'd be willing to give Bounce a go as GM. Aaron's gut reaction was to feel betrayed, but then he thought about it. Really, he couldn't blame Will. Bounce probably would be a good GM. He would have no problems playing under her if it didn't mean losing his position as GM.

Bounce said that she would discuss it with Alice and Stephen, and at that point Aaron began to fear that she was actually going to go through with it. That would... well, that wouldn't be good at all. He didn't want to give up his position. It was pretty important to him. He'd played in games before, and it was great fun, but nothing rivaled being completely in control of the story. The ability to create a world, and the characters who inhabited it, and the horrible dangers it contained, and then share it... well it was pretty amazing.

Bounce took her leave. Aaron said a quick "Goodbye" to her, but wasn't really paying attention. No, he had more important things to think about. He had to figure out some way to get around Bounce's suggestion. He needed an idea of what to do if she didn't calm down, if she stayed annoyed.

Then it came to him.

Maybe she isn't mad. Maybe she's jealous.

If Bounce was jealous of his position as GM, everything would make so much more sense. Her needless overreaction would be explained. Jealousy was something he could understand, and maybe even deal with. He already had an idea of what he could do. He would just need some help. The best thing to do would be to talk to Will now, since Bounce would get the first crack at Alice and Stephen.

"Sorry today's session went short," Aaron said to Will. He wasn't really sorry, but hey, Will didn't seem the happiest about being dead, so some sympathy would probably make him more amenable to Aaron's position.

"I was thinking about what Bounce said. Maybe I could use a break now and then. Maybe we can start switching off sessions or something, taking turns running separate campaigns. That way, Bounce gets to run the game sometimes, like she seems to want to do so badly, but she gets to play, too! What do you think?"

That sounded reasonable enough. The worst case scenario was that Bounce was an awful GM, in which case Aaron could take things over full time again. In the best case, well, playing could be fun for a change, as long as it wasn't all he did.

"Also, if you need to use the phone to call a ride or something, go right ahead," Aaron said as an afterthought. He didn't want Will to end up stranded here for hours with nothing to do. That wouldn't favorably dispose him towards Aaron's suggestion at all.

Dead. Erik Silverbane was dead. But Will had it all planned out. He was going to find a princess in distress, save her from a dragon. Then in the middle of the night he'd sneak into her bed chamber and propose to her. But she'd have to say no, for he was legendary thief, and she was a princess. "Believe," he'd say, and dive off the tower to a hidden rope, disappearing into the night. He'd find another kingdom, and pretend he was an exiled prince. He'd bring about a revolution, and then return to the kingdom as a prince, and get all Count of Monte Cristo on their asses.

But that wasn't going to happen, because he'd exploded in the middle of a mountain. It was all a bit of a shock. Will realised Aaron was talking to him. He snapped back to it.

"Actually, that doesn't sound too bad. That would mean twice as many sessions or something, wouldn't it? I'm cool with that."

Or it could mean having to switch between characters on a weekly basis, or some fortnightly schedule. Will wondered in whether Bounce would be hosting the sessions at her house. In his mind he imagined darkened rooms with the walls covered in pictures of SOTF contestants, but quickly reminded himself that Bounce wasn't that crazy. Actually he didn't know much apart Bounce's family, apart from that they were Russian. In fact, he wasn't even sure about that. Perhaps her parents were Russian mobsters, or maybe, just maybe, they were completely normal. Will was starting to feel really silly about the presumptions he was making about her.

"Actually, I'll probably be able to get home on my own, it's not too dark yet. I should be fine."

It was actually a bit further than Will would like to walk, but he could always catch a bus if he got tired. That, and the fact that he did enjoy walking. He adjusted his coat, picked up his dice and headed for the door.

"See ya at school, we'll be talk about it then. Bye."

As Will walked he warmed to the idea. With Bounce as a DM he could make up a mage. A young prodigy, tragically inflicted with a curse to die in a year, desperate to make his legend before his time runs out. And then he'd find a princess in distress, save her from a dragon. They'd fall in love, but he would have to leave, as he was doomed to die...

Will's idea of the situation seemed a bit tenuous, but at least he wasn't mad. No, Will could be counted on to take things in stride. He wouldn't freak out like the others.

Aaron supposed it was time to start planning the next campaign. Somehow, though, he just wasn't motivated. He couldn't focus. He was getting a bit of a headache. What a miserable day it had been. Everything had gone wrong. He just needed to cool down a little.

Some days it just seemed like everyone was after him. It was almost like all his bad luck stored itself up and boiled out all at once, like once a month or so the universe thought to itself, Oh, let's go make Aaron's life hell.

Well, things would get better tomorrow. For now, he would go mess around on the internet, and figure out how to mollify Bounce if she didn't like his suggestion. It shouldn't be that hard. Aaron knew he was good at dealing with people, when he put his mind to it. He'd probably be back on good terms with everyone in two days, assuming they didn't decide to be unreasonable and hold a grudge.

Speaking of grudges, he still owed one Jacquard Broughten a little bit of payback, if he could manage it. He was pretty sure Prom was coming up. That would be a good opportunity. He didn't really think he was going to go to Prom; it was just another stupid social farce, after all, another arbitrary universal experience that idiots would look back on fondly when they were old and grey and hideous. Aaron didn't plan to end up that way, wishing he'd never grown older. No, anything worth doing was worth doing until it got boring. Age didn't need to mean a tedious, meaningless existence.

Maybe he did have enough energy left to plan the next campaign after all...
