Kiss and Tell

Dougal, Garry and Hermione (2nd grade)

Events and happenings began influencing who our characters are long before the SOTF ACT was even a glimmer in someone's eye. Have an interesting memory of your character's to share? Want to show the world why they are the way they are? Even if you just want to establish why they like comic books, this is the place to do it!

Dougal sighed as he sat down on the sole patch of grass the school possessed. It was just a small strip of grass, with a couple of trees, at the back of the playground, but Dougal found it to be a wonderful place to relax or hang out. He needed to relax at the moment; second grade was getting really annoying and frustrating; schoolwork was enough of a hassle on its own, but what was really annoying him today was that that old teacher with the really long, silly name (everyone just called her Ms. K) had shouted at him for no reason. He just dropped a chair he was carrying. That was it. But no, she had to get all nasty and mean, shouting at him in his face for being clumsy or stupid or lazy or whatever. Her breath smelled really bad and she was spitting a lot; when he asked her not to shout (really politely, like his parents taught him) she'd shouted at him some more.

He'd have the last laugh though. He'd tell his parents all about this unfair little incident and the disgusting crone would get fired and thrown out on the street. And when he was older and a very successful scientist or businessman or whatever, he'd track her down and spit in HER face.

Dougal decided to lie back on the grass, staring at the clouds above him. The untended grass was a bit wet, and was a very sickly, yellowy colour, and it was crawling with ants and slimy worms and other creepy-crawlies, but he didn't mind. As long as they didn't go on his skin, he could ignore them and just push them away. The playground was fairly quiet today; most of his fellow students were still inside eating their lunch, or were lying about playing with toys or reading some book. There was nothing to do and no-one interesting to talk to. He was bored. REALLY bored.

Garry exited the elementry school building and was immediately met with the scent of rain. He loved the smell and breathed in deeply to take it in. A very brief shower had passed just half an hour ago, leaving a few shallow puddles scattered across the tarmac. Garry resisted the temptations to splash in them as he walked across the playground. He didn't want to ruin his shoes and trousers, and he definitely didn't want to be screamed at by Ms. K when he went back inside. Oh man did he loathe that teacher, and he was certain that most, if not all the others in his class felt the same.

Speaking of Ms. K, as he looked over towards the end of the playground, he could see the boy that the monstrous teacher had just been shouting at. 'Why was she like that to him?' Garry wondered. He would've expected that kind of treatment if Dougal had hit one of the other pupils, or if he was being really disruptive during a class. But dropping a chair by accident? So not fair.

The grass was probably damp as well, so why Dougal was lying there to begin with mystified Garry (especially since Ms. K would probably throw a fit if she could see him now). So he decided to head on over and find out what was happening with him.

"Bonjour," he said when he reached Dougal, speaking one of the few French words he knew. "Why are you lying down here?"

Dougal was really getting into his thoughts and his imagination (the thought of a giant chair dropping on Ms. K's head halfway through a class was surprisingly therapeutic), when he heard a "bonjour" from someone. Looking up to see who it was, he was pleasantly surprised to see it was Garry. They got on well, and they both shared a mutual hatred of Ms. K. "Why are you lying down there?"

Dougal climbed to his feet. "Nothing much really." He shrugged. "Thinking, I guess," he murmured. Wait. The back of his pants were wet. "Oh, stupid grass...." he muttered quietly to himself, quickly glancing over his shoulder and at his back to see if the damage from the wet grass wasn't too noticeable. Ah, the damage weren't too bad. It didn't look like he'd wet himself or something, which was good. As quickly as he could, he tried subtly brushing the back off his clothing down to wipe off any leaves and insects that had stuck to his clothing, hoping no-one noticed what he was doing. After that, he paused, staring at a particularly large stone, trying to think of a good conversation starter.

"Urm...Ms. K should be fired."

Hermione giggled as she hoisted herself up on the monkey bars. They really were her favourite thing to play on. She crossed the bars twice, then did a sort of flip and pulled herself into an upside down position.

All in all, it had been a good day for her. She had some colouring to do in class earlier and that was fun. She wasn't really good at spelling just yet, but she at least got commended for her efforts.

As she contemplated an upside down world, she spotted Dougal and Garry, giving them a cheerful wave - they looked a bit upset about something.

"Urm...Ms. K should be fired."

"Yeah, she really does," Garry said with a nod. Oh how he remembered when she'd made a mean remark about his spelling test the past week. He'd got twelve out of twenty, a result he was disappointed with (ironically, disappoint was one of the words he'd spelt incorrectly, writing 'dissapoint' instead) but did she really have to call him stupid for that? "I can't wait until we reach third grade," he muttered.

He looked behind Dougal at the trees and thought about how fun it would be to try climbing them. Unfortunately for him, it wasn't going to happen, seeing as all the lower branches had been sawed off and the higher ones were too far away to them to reach. The act had been done by order of the principle, citing 'health and safety reasons'. To an eight year old though, all that mumbo-jumbo meant nothing and it was all just tantamount to we're ruining your fun, and there's nothing you can do about it!

Fortunately, there was another, albeit much simpler place for Garry and the other youngsters to get their climbing fix, and that was on the monkey bars. He looked over to the playground equipment and saw a girl, a rather pretty one at that, who just happened to be waving over to him and Dougal whilst hanging upside down from the bars. Of course, Garry knew this particular girl very well, seeing as she was in his class.

"Hermione's waving at us," Garry said, waving back to her. "Wanna go talk with her?"

"Yeah, she really does. I can't wait until we reach third grade." Dougal nodded. Garry too had received a lot of nonsense from Ms. K. Last week he got 12 out of 20 in a spelling test (which Dougal thought was a mark to be proud of, even though he himself had received an admirable 16 out of 20 in that particular test) and she had been really mean to him. And what's worse, in grade one, she'd looked like she would be such a nice, friendly, helpful teacher. What made it EVEN more worse was that she was very caring towards the girls in the class, a fact that annoyed Dougal to no end. And they were stuck with her for most lessons, bar art, science and gym, which was the reason Dougal looked forward to those lessons so much.

However, insulting Ms. K behind her back, despite feeling somewhat empowering in a weird way, was becoming old, and people were getting bored of insulting her behind her back or making up farfetched claims that they were gonna remove her by going on strike and such (Dougal just needed 5 more signatures for his little petition to remove Ms. K, but his parents had said no, his sisters couldn't write yet and none of the teachers would sign.)

Garry then pointed out that Hermione was waving to them. He waved back and gave her a quick grin. Hermione was pretty cute, and she was very nice and sweet. "Yeah, sure", he replied to Garry. He had nothing better to do, and it was always good to talk with people like Garry and Hermione. "Hey Hermione!" he said, waving to her.

Hermione grinned at the upside down Garry and Dougal.

"Hi Garry! Hi Dougal!" she repeated herself, blissfully unaware that she'd already greeted them.

The fact that Hermione had passed the spelling test that Ms. K set last week was a miracle unto itself, her low score of 10/20 notwithstanding. Nature had provided Hermione with the looks of a goddess and all the brains of a pigeon. Undeterred by her obvious intellectual incapability, Hermione seemed to exist in some sort of Pollyanna-like blissful bubble of happiness and joy, viewing the world through permanent rose-tinted glasses.

Hermione's earlier teachers despaired of her addle-brained stupidity and often criticized her despite the amount of effort she put into her studies. In contrast, the long-suffering Ms. K had recognized Hermione's lack of brains and had congratulated her on her efforts, encouraging her to study when she could and recognizing that the girl was trying her best. It was for this reason that Hermione had failed to sign Dougal's petition to remove the teacher.

"Hey, whatcha two talking about?" she asked.

"Hey, whatcha two talking about?"

"Hi Hermione, we're talking about Ms. K," Garry simply replied, walking up to the monkey bars, climbing up to the top of the ladder and holding onto the highest rung to support himself. He had to admit that this piece of playground equipment was a lot of fun, even if it wasn't as tall as the nearby trees, and didn't have any branches or leaves. "She's mean, scary and we don't like her."

Even after saying that, Garry wasn't really expecting any kind of negative comment from Hermione. While he got twelve in the test and was moaned at by Ms. K, Hermione got an even lower score, and was instead praised by the teacher. How was that fair? Was Ms. K playing favourites or something? It certainly felt that way to Garry.

"Err... doesn't your head hurt? I feel dizzy if I stay upside-down for too long, y'know," Garry pointed out, watching Hermione hanging on the bars by her legs.

Dougal had cringed slightly at the use of his nickname. Because most kids his age couldn't pronounce Augustus, they'd taken to calling him Dougal. Initially, it was very annoying, but now he was beginning to subconsciously refer to himself using it, much to his annoyance. He was ashamed to say it, but the nickname Dougal was beginning to grow on him, and he was no longer annoyed at people calling him by it. He joined Garry in walking towards Hermione, and then sat on one of the lower rungs of the monkey bars. He liked the monkey bars, they were a fun diversion and a fun place to hang out, but falling on your butt all the time got boring after a while.

"Hi Hermione, we're talking about Ms. K. She's mean, scary and we don't like her." Garry said to Hermione. Dougal nodded, adding "Yeah, you were there when she shouted at me for no reason today, and you saw her get angry at Garry for his spelling test." Obviously, Hermione was a girl, so she always got the best treatment Ms. K could offer, and probably would shrug their complaints aside, like his parents and every other teacher had done. What was it his father had said?

"Teachers are like referees. They may not be right, but what they say goes."

Dougal blamed that little saying for why he hated referees so much. Was there no justice in the world?

As Garry began to ask Hermione if being upside-down made her dizzy, Dougal decided to entertain himself by rapping his fingers against the bars, and waving his hand in Hermione's upside-down face.

"You guys are just silly. Ms. K is really nice." Hermione chirped.

Hermione's face was getting a bit red from all the blood rushing to it. She wasn't actually feeling dizzy to begin with, but now that Garry mentioned it, she was starting to feel the world swirling. The effect was made somewhat worse by Dougal waving his hands in her face and smacking the bars.

"Hey! Stoppit! Dougaaaal... Stoooop!" she protested.

As the dizziness increased, little girl swung her upper body up to the bars, catching the next set of bars and pulling herself up to a sitting position on top of the monkey bars. From there, she looked down at her two friends, her bottom planted firmly on a bar somewhere above Dougal.

If Dougal looked up, he'd probably see Hermione's blue and white striped panties – it hadn't occurred to her that wearing a skirt was not conducive to hanging around on the monkey bars.

"You guys are just meany mean pants." Hermione concluded.

Just as Garry had expected, Hermione stuck up for Ms. K and called her really nice of all things. 'Must be a girl thing,' he thought, then burst out laughing when Dougal started waving his hand in Hermione's face.

"You guys are just meany mean pants," he heard her cry out.

"Ms. K's a big meany mean pants," Garry responded, letting go of the top rung and spreading his arms as far apart as possible, showing Hermione just how big he meant. He suddenly felt himself losing his balance and quickly grabbed the rung again before he could fall backwards off the ladder. He looked behind him to see if the teacher in question was out on the playground, but saw that she was nowhere to be seen. 'That was lucky. If she heard me say that, she would put me in detention," he thought.

He looked down through the gaps in the bars at Dougal, still standing on the ground beneath Hermione. "I'm the king of the castle, you're the dirty rascal," he taunted the other boy in a sing-song voice, heaving himself up onto the top of the monkey bars and sat just a couple of bars away from Hermione, dangling his legs down.

As Dougal began waving his hand in Hermione's face, she begged him to stop and Garry burst out laughing, prompting Dougal to chuckle sadistically a bit himself. He was rather disappointed when she swung upwards and sat on the bars above him, making him let out an audible "Aww."

"You guys are just meany mean pants."

"Ms. K's a big meany mean pants."

"Ms. K is a very big meany mean pants", Dougal contributed to the exchange, briefly looking over his shoulder to see if Ms. K was anywhere within earshot. "You're a girl 'Mione, you get treated nicely by her. Me and Garry are boys, she hates us with all her heart." It was no wonder Hermione was always springing to Ms. K's defence, she always got comforted and praised by the woman. He looked up at Hermione, only to have a clear view of her panties. "Nice panties, by the way." He giggled immaturely.

"I'm the king of the castle, you're the dirty rascal."

Dougal turned to face the source of that taunt, Garry. "Is that a challenge?" Dougal replied, a smirk on his face. He jumped onto the monkey bars, speedily scampering up them, climbing to the top and sitting right between Garry and Hermione. "Now who's the dirty rascal, Garry?"

Hermione would have come up with a good answer to Garry and Dougal's comments about Ms. K, but her train of thought was quickly derailed by embarrassment over Dougal staring at her undies. Her cheeks reddened considerably, as if she'd gone over them with a rouge brush.

"HEY!" she squeaked as she pulled her skirts down. "Don't peek!"

As the boys began clamouring over the rest of the monkey bars, Hermione decided to leave them to their barbaric fighting. After crawling across the tops of the bars until she was just above the ladder, she grabbed the first bar on the playset and pushed herself through. She unhooked her knees from the monkey bars and pointed her feet towards the ground before letting go.

Once safely on the ground, Hermione stuck her tongue out at the boys and beat a hasty retreat. She settled in the sandpit within their eye line and made a show of ignoring them both.

"You're still a dirty rascal, Dougal," Garry jested, laughing loudly. He then noticed Hermione dropping down to the floor and poking her tongue out at him. "That's rude, Hermione! I'm telling Ms. K you did that!" he called out. Though in the back of his mind, he knew that Ms. K would scold him for tattling, and then would give no punishment to Hermione. Such was school life.

"I think we scared her off," Garry said, watching Hermione dart away from the monkey bars and heading to the sandpit, sitting there with her back to the boys and paying them no attention whatsoever. "What do we do now?" he asked his friend, grabbing hold of one of the bars and dropping through the gap, dangling there by just his hands. "Got any games we can play?" he suggested, letting go of the bars and falling down onto his feet once his arms and hands started to hurt.

As much as tried to, Dougal couldn't think of a good comeback to Garry's dirty rascal comment. However, after he told Hermione about seeing her panties, he found her reaction something to chuckle at; she panicked, pulled her skirt down and whined at him to stop peeking. "Stop showing then", Dougal responded sarcastically, as Hermione climbed off the bars and sulked off to the sandpit. As she stuck her tongue out at the pair, Dougal did the same, blowing a raspberry to go with it. "That's rude, Hermione! I'm telling Ms. K you did that!" Garry told her.

"Don't even bother Garry. You know who Ms. K will go with."

Hermione was by now obviously trying to ignore the two as much as possible, which Dougal thought was very rude, Dougal joined Garry in jumping off the bars, landing clumsily on his two feet, having to quickly grab onto the lowest rungs of the monkey bars to stop himself landing face-first. "I think we scared her off. What do we do now? Got any games we can play?"

"Erm...truth or dare?" Dougal suggested hesitantly.
