Isabel had stayed on the bus when they had gotten to McDonalds. She had more or less urged Ray to go in with everybody and get something to eat. He didn't feel very hungry. He really wanted to get back home, forget all of this. As great as it was having Isabel still there, there were still things he was scourging himself with.

Felicia had already come in, Ray had seen her get up and change tables as he walked in. It was good that she had gotten herself to go interact with people. Lately she seemed worse than he had been. Anyways, it was his turn to be quiet.

He reached the counter and scanned the menu. This was a Canadian Mickey D's, which meant bacon double cheeseburgers. Which, off-season, always sounded amazing. Today, it just sounded passable.

"...And a large Coke. Thanks."

He took his order back to a booth in the corner, opened his bag and grabbed the first burger. He unwrapped it and started nibbling, looking around at the other kids about to induce sugar comas on themselves.

"All so goddamn normal." He took a bite and leaned his shoulders against the back of the seat.

Now this was just awesome.

He was going to be drinking ice cream in an ice-cream drinking contest against his best friend, his roommate, and another survivordon't say survivor she's a classmate - what reason? For the heck of it, apparently! As Felicia scooted right on over, Brendan took it upon himself to try and become the official McFlurry delegate, sorting out groups of six, seven at the very most, for the four participants. Jesus Christ, how many of these things did he get? Was this gonna become a thing now? They'd sell pretty well for cheapskates who couldn't afford a 50 cent cone. Probably.

And then, there they sat, along the booth, with lines of processed ice cream in tiny ketchup bowls in front of the four vastly different individuals, ready to drown them as quick as their hands would allow.

"Alright. Everyone ready?"

Six per person.

That was plenty enough. She had the feeling someone was going to get a brainfreeze by the end. Then again, the cups were small, and if Jay had drunk all of them by himself, well... yeah. So! This was going to be fun fun fun times. Sarah said she didn't want to participate, and so just picked up her cup and begin to slowly sip the contents. Chase couldn't help but feel a bit more relieved knowing that she was calming down quickly enough. She didn't know what to do if she... you know. But things were under control. No need to worry right now. Well, okay, she was to some extent worried that Brendan was going to hurt himself during the eating contest, thanks to his injuries. He was starting to get better, but still. But he seemed fine enough to do it. Then again, it could be one of those cases where you think you're fine but you're not. Sound familiar, eh Chase?

Eh, he seemed fine enough. She still couldn't help but be a bit worried deep down. But his injuries were healing up nicely. Which was nice, of course. She hoped the others were fine, too, at least enough to participate, of course.

And now a new person was to be invited. And that person? A girl currently staring at her hamburger as if in a daze. She knew that girl. That girl was Felicia Carmichael. She didn't know Feli that well. But now's a good time at least, right? And what better way to get to know someone than by slurping down Oreo McFlurries with them? Not very many, actually.

The girl had looked depressed at first, then when Jay called her over she seemed to flicker to shyness. And then, like a lightbulb turning on, she decided to join them, saying that they were all going to be, in her own words, McFlurried under the table.

Chase couldn't help but gleefully clap her hands and grin a bit wider. Wonderful! This was gonna be a blast!

Soon the McFlurry shots were properly distributed. Chase managed a small "Thanks!" as hers came by.

Brendan had asked them if they were ready. Of course they were. Barring some kind of freak accident that somehow improbably happened even just after they got out of the hospital after a terrorist attack, something like, say, a rhinoceros escaping from a zoo, coming in, and killing everyone, it was pretty clear that they were ready.

"You bet I am! If you guys like... I dunno, have any concerns, like h-health, safety, or rules 'n stuff, let us know before we start, okay?"

Just had to get that out of the way.

"But yeah! We can start, right?"

Start start start!

Start it now! Now now!

Sarah didn't really go for eating quickly, the small girl was comfortable with eating quietly and savouring the taste. There was something about the cheerful air that made joining in impossible to resist.

She quietly had her ketchup container of ice cream, eating it slowly. When she was done, she reached out for another. Now, Sarah was smiling a little, her unhappy thoughts shoved away in favour of happier ones spent with her classmates. She glanced over at the other faces at the table, recognising none of them, save for Brendan and Chase.

After her second cup of ice cream was consumed, she realised that the burger in front of her smelled delicious. Not her own burger, of course, but Brendan's.

While Brendan was distracted with the food race, Sarah reached a hand out to take a delicious smelling cheeseburger from the pile that sat temptingly on the other side of the table. Having nabbed said burger, she contented herself with a small bite.

It was... good.

She had to take another bite.

Ray finished off his Coke with a long, deep sip. The burgers were sitting in his stomach now like a pair of meaty bricks. He felt marginally better than when he had gotten off the bus. In truth, seeing his classmates trying to restart their lives with an ice cream shot eating contest did more than the sandwiches. He smiled.

Ray carried his trash with him on the tray as he headed to the door. He threw away his waste and then took a glance back at his classmates.

"Enjoy it." He said so only he could hear it, and then he walked out.

((Sorry this is so fucking late, and so short. -____-;))

Jay rubbed his hands together anxiously, licking his lips. The smell of the food was intoxicating. He adjusted himself, cracking his neck as Felicia sat down next to him. A grin spread across his face as he glanced at the others. All set to go.

"Ready? Three... Two, One... Let's clog some arteries!"

Jay's hands darted out, grabbing two cups. His mouth dropped open and his head shot back. Within seconds he'd downed the two, dropping the empty containers to his plate, his stomach growling for more. The others went at their cups as well, and Jay barely managed to suppress a laugh as he raised the next cup to his mouth. It was ridiculous, but he was glad it was happening. He wasn't in the mood for pity. He would never be in the mood for pity.

No, he was in the mood for fatty fat foods and a good fucking time. Jay shook the cup and a glob of ice cream fell into the back of his mouth.

"Oh God, why have I not done this more often," He breathed, reaching for the next one.

One a time, Felicia, one at a time. You can do this... I mean, look at them? They're fucking ketchup cups. Kitten cups. Teaspoons have bigger portions of McFlurry than these fucking things.

Felicia picked up the first cup, and could almost feel her stomach making room for it. Indeed, the closer the cup drew to her lips, the hungrier she got. Channeling her inner barcrawler, she imagined the softserve treat as a shot of bourbon and downed it as such, tilting of the head, sharp motion and all. No sooner than the ice cream had started going down her throat, the second cup was already within her grasp.

Something felt odd about her strategy of single grabs and gulps. Jay was popping two of the damned things at a time (she just barely resisted making a double fisting joke), which was probably a good deal more efficient. But this wasn't about winning, anyway. It was about living again. So another shot was downed, then another, then the fourth. Felicia had worked through all of the shots placed in front of her, a smile firmly cemented in place... at least, until she discovered one of the more unsavory aspects of still being alive. She could still get...

"A-Ah, shit! Brainfreeze, brainfreeze! Uuuuuuugh..."

Eiko sat in the corner, staring at the group of students in the corner. She didn't know what they were doing, not really. Everyone was laughing and talking and eating, she knew, but beyond that, it was hard to comprehend what exactly they were about. It all seemed so alien and distant to her. Every time she thought about getting up from her booth and joining them, she felt tired, too tired to move from her seat. So the cycle repeated for who knows how long, the only difference being that the food on Eiko's tray lessened with each iteration.

Her experiences with McDonalds were limited, and almost entirely secondhand. She knew of its reputation as the food of choice when one had little to no choice, and since that never truly applied to her, she'd never entertained the thought of eating there. But that was then. The last two weeks changed everything; Eiko had been deprived of the fine dining and home-cooked meals she was used to, left only with rock-hard bread and barely edible hospital food. Considering that there was something about McDonalds food that kept people coming back to it, despite its cheapness, Eiko felt that she was in a rare position to consider it a step up.

She only knew what to order because of another student; she'd just repeated his order and got a double cheeseburger with fries and a coke. It tasted unsurprisingly coarse and basic, relying on the addictive qualities of cheese and salt and sugar and grease to carry it through in lieu of any real flavor. But at least it was something, and Eiko did eventually manage to finish all of it, albeit slowly.

When she wasn't eating, she looked quite alien herself, or perhaps as ghoulish as she looked getting on the boat. Her hair had grown long and unkempt, to the extent that it kept covering her face like a ragged curtain. Whenever she thought of her appearance, she thought of Sadako, and couldn't believe that nobody had called her on the similarities. They did know about that movie, right? That was just about the only thing that made her smile that day.

So there she sat, sitting still as a statue and watching everybody else recover. Only two questions remained.

Why couldn't she follow their lead?

Was there any point in staying?

Jojo was completely absorbed in his gluttony at this point. The McNuggets had all been devoured, chased by half the McFlurry, given company by one of the fish sandwiches, and then dancing with handfuls of fries he had slipped in.

As his place slowed, he briefly reflected on those who were dead again before being interrupted by Felicia's outburst and giving him a new train of thought. Heh, its a miracle that such a simple and temporary pain is her biggest worry right now. What else do we really have to worry about anymore though? No more killing, no more surviving, we're just normal teenagers again. As normal as we can be I suppose.

That bit of introspection was interrupted by a growl from his stomach, he took that as a sign to resume his frantic pace of eating and ravaged the remainders of his first course.

((And once again, I apologise for the wait - exaaaaaaams))

Brendan was pleasantly surprised at how slow he was of an drinker. Say what you will about the Australians and their bottomless drinking belly (yeah yeah, there was no real drinking here, but give him a dream), Brendan might as well have given up his Aussie badge for how slowly he managed to get it down. By the time he'd finished his first, they were already on their second and third. By the time he was done with that, they were already almost done. He took Jay's strategy and tried two at once, and by the time he was on his final two, he heard the dropping of cups stop on one edge of the table - someone had already finished.

"Alright, I'm apparently slower than I thought."

Must be the head woun-

Must have been because he was tired.

He ignored the fact that the small girl sitting across the table had taken his burger. She was still in shock, he didn't care about anything she did now, she could do whatever the hell she wanted and he'd support or ignore it either way.

Chase was geared.

No, pumped.

She was born ready, dang it. She was going to guzzle down all these shots. Oh yes, she would. But what about her competitors? They were probably ready as well. But, that just meant that she had to be more ready than ready. Beyond ready. Ready before she was born. Ready while she was in the womb. Ready before she reincarnated into this life and when she was someone other than Anna Chase, if that sort of thing even existed. Alternately, ready when she was just a soul before it was born. Either way.

Chase was going to try to be more ready than these folks.

Wait was Sarah...?

The small Asian girl's hand reached out to grab Brendan's burger. An odd feeling came over her for a few seconds. Annoyance? That was her only guess. She had no idea why. Sarah was scared and must have been hungry. And suddenly, the feeling went away just as quickly. Yes, she was just sad, lonely, and hungry. Plus, Brendan didn't seem to mind. Perhaps she could offer to get them more food if they wanted it-

Oh right. Eating contest.

Chase's eyes went back to the McFlurry shots, staring intently at the shots.

Jay's voice counted down.

Three...

Two...

One...

GO!

Chase's hands reached forward, only focusing on the ice cream. Like Jay and Brendan, she had tried the two at a time technique. Drink one, toss the cup aside and drink the other while grabbing another cup as quickly as possible. Another part of her strategy involved not letting it hit the roof of her mouth. Hard, but it had to be done; it was the number one cause of brainfreeze, having cold objects against the roof. And when it did touch, her tongue swiftly reached to soothe it. It helped, right?

Right.

She did this all as quickly as possible. One cup. Drink. Another cup. Drink. It was all reaction. She wasn't paying attention to what anyone was saying, or what was happening around her.

Her last cup touched the table. Chase looked up. Despite her techniques, she still managed to get brainfreeze. A small dribble of ice cream remained on her face. But she was happy. She had no idea who won, but she was happy.

"AlrightI'mdonewhowonIwannaknow!" she shouted.
